The 2002 Soc.Sexuality.Spanking
Summer Short Story Contest

The Awards!

Dear soc.sexuality.spanking,

Another year, another summer Short Story Contest!  And this one's reached its conclusion even before winter has set in, which ought to be considered a minor triumph.  :-)

There's not going to be the traditional hoop-la over presenting the results and such this year.  Just a quiet appreciation for all of the wonderful talent and hard work that produced -- as usual -- a fabulous collection of stories.  Almost three hundred of them.  And as rich and diverse a collection as you're likely to find anywhere, proof that there's really no such thing as a typical spanking story.  It's a blank canvas that people fill in so many different and magical ways, representing the wonderful diversity of our kinks.

There were nine categories this year.  Shortlists in each of the categories were produced by the dedicated team of twenty-two (or so) volunteer readers.  An open vote was then held to determine the winners in each shortlist.  Needless to say, this is subjective as all hell, but the winners would be entitled to feel a little happy and smug.  :-)

The first category is: ADULT: A story in which all of the main characters are adults.  This was easily the most popular category, with seventy-nine stories, and also extremely competitive.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third In third place is:  Nice Guys  by Lurking Col

Second Squeaking into second place is:  A Note on the Fridge Door  by Haron

First And just beyond this, in joint first place, are:  Le Bel Age  by Bird  and  She's Leaving Home  by Tasha

The second category is: CHILD: A story in which at least one of the main characters is a child.  Twenty stories were entered in this category.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third In joint third place are: The Peanut Gallery  and  Punishment Garage  both by Zprymantis

Second In second place is:  Unholy Ground  by RC

First But by some distance, first place goes to:  Hush  by Tasha

o0o

The third category is: EDGE: A story in which the author deals with subject matter which pushes towards the edge of their fantasies in some way.  Only eleven stories entered here -- probably reflecting how hard some of these things are to write -- but the standard was amazingly high, and in the end there wasn't much to choose at all between the top few stories.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third Again, there's a tie for third place, between:  The Seashore III  by Mija  and  Death Play  by Kessily

Second In clear second place is:  The View From Up Here  by Tasha

First And just beating this, and taking first place, is: Jealousy Burns  by Haron

The fourth category is: FIRST/LAST: Stories using a specific line at the beginning or the end.  This wasn't quite as popular this year as last, but a total of thirty-two stories were entered.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third In third place is: Tugging  by Zprymantis

Second In second place is:  Bedtime Stories  by Kessily

First Only just beating this, in (yet again) joint first place, are:  Whispering Hush  by Adrian Turtle and  Full Frontal  by Mija

The fifth category is: MINI-SAGA: A story of exactly Fifty words, rather than five hundred.  This category turned out to be the surprise success of this year's contest, with a whopping fifty-nine stories entered.  Such short stories are really hard to write, but some really wonderful little pieces came out this year.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third In joint third place are:  The Sign by Wooz and  Emily  by Abel and Kate

Second In second place is: Tommy  by Sarah Nada

First But top in this competitive and popular category is: Dear Parents  by Katie Bad Grrl

o0o

The sixth category is: NOT-MY-KINK: A story in which the author writes about a (spanking-related) kink or orientation which they don't have.  Like edge stories, this is a really difficult category to write in, and probably reflects the relatively small number of entries -- just nine.  The standard, though, was impressively high.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third In third place is:  Access Rights  by Plierla Fesserla

Second In second place is:  Three Black Cats  by BCCFafnir

First And first place goes to:  Not My Kink  by Tasha

o0o

The seventh category is: PARODY/POETRY: Poems, and stories/song-lyrics which use some form of parody.  As might be expected, the entries in this category were extremely diverse, making it very difficult to choose between all fourty-eight of them.  Shortlisted entries were:

Third Only just beating off the competition into third place is:  Orthodoxymoron  by Tasha

Second And squeezing into second place is:  Little Red Riding Hood  by Dyke Grrl

First But a clear winner in this category is:  Tortillas  by Mija

o0o

The eighth category is: PERIOD: A story set in some period other than the present day, and in which the period is significant to the story.  There were twenty-seven entries in this category, and judging was again extremely tight.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third In third place is:  The Way Things Should Have Been  by Tasha

Second Only just beaten into second place is:  Love Sculpture  by Koalabear

First But the winner in this category is:  Pride of the Puritans  by Joe Whatever

o0o

And the final category this year is: SPOOKY: A story with a spooky/eerie theme or twist.  Only nine entries this year (maybe there'd have been more if the contest had included Halloween), but uniformly great.  Shortlisted stories were:

Third Third place goes to:  Visitation Rights  by BCCFafnir

Second Second place goes to:  Fathers Day  by Joe Whatever

First But the winner, by some considerable distance, is:  The Judas Steer  by Tasha

Congratulation to all of the winners, and runners up, and anyone else who wants some congratulation.  :-)

That's not it, though.  There are more prizes yet!  These given in an entirely arbitrary and capricious manner by the readers:

And that really is it for this year.  Thanks from me to all of the writers who submitted stories this year, but most of all to the volunteer readers, who tolerated my dictatorship with extreme patience, and worked incredibly hard.  The SSC readers do the bulk of the work for the contest each year, and don't get nearly enough of the kudos.  These were the readers this year.  Don't be shy about thanking the crap out of them.

Watch out for next year's context.  And start wondering who the dictator will be - 'cause it won't be me.  :-)
