The Headmaster's Tale

By

For me, it was merely routine.

She's just another line in the punishment book: four strokes, cane, cheating.

But for her?

She'll be hiding, alone. Tracing the stripes, soothing the pain, wiping away her tears. Remembering. Too ashamed, humiliated to face her friends.

I've already forgotten it.

She never will.

The End

I really liked this story. In 50 words, this story has made me concerned, smile, and remember. I think most of us can remember getting in trouble as a child. Though ask our parents and they know nothing of it. Well told story.

Wow! I never knew so much could fit into such a short space. This is a really excellent mini-saga--you chose something that was brief enough to be dealt with in the limited space, and the story is complete.

There's a very nice idea at the core of this story - the wildly different perspective of punishment by headmaster and pupil. But there's also an unsatisfying paradox. It's the headmaster's story. If the girl, and the punishment, mean so little to him, why is he telling it at all? Perhaps if the story was told in third-person, out of his head, it might have worked more effectively - or if it was told in a kind of distracted, bland tone. But what comes through is that the girl, and the punishment, will be remembered by the headmaster, perhaps despite himself. That's an interesting concept, but I don't think it's what was intended.

An interesting piece, in that it's hard to tell exactly what the headmaster's tone is intended to be. I found I could read this equally easily as either a sympathetic or sadistic piece. Either way it is a very effective piece of writing, conveying a great deal in a short space.
