Little Red Riding Hood

By

Dyke Grrl <dyke.grrl@verizon.net>

Ruby wasn't supposed to be walking.  (How else would she get the name little red riding hood?)  But why spend money on the bus, instead of on things she wasn't supposed to have?

Halfway to Grandmother's house, she stopped at a bodega.  "I've never stopped here before," she announced, even though she wasn't supposed to talk to strangers either, "but I'm tired, and I want a candy bar."

Lupe, the clerk, thought she recognized the face and the red jacket from pictures in her neighbor's hallway.  "Where are you going, so early in the morning?"

"I have to stay with my grandmother while my mother goes to work."

"Why are you walking?"

"I like exercise," Ruby lied.

"Well, be careful, and watch what's around you," Lupe advised, and Ruby went on her way.

Meanwhile, Lupe called Grandmother, and told her who she'd seen.

When Ruby knocked at her grandmother's door, there was no answer.  Ruby walked inside.  The only light in came from Grandmother's soaps on the television.  Ruby walked to the couch.

"Grandmother!  You look. different.  Your eyes are so bright."

"The better to see you with, honey."

"Your face is so stern."

"The better to scold you with."

"Your. hands are so big."

"The better to spank you with!"

And Ruby found herself over Grandmother's lap.  SMACK!!  Grandmother spanked until Ruby's bottom was as red as her hood.

"Your spanking is so hard!" Ruby cried.

"The better to teach you with," said Grandmother, and continued the spanking.

When Grandmother finally allowed Ruby to stand up, she warned her to obey her mother.  And Ruby remembered. at least until she met the huntsman.  But that's another story.

The End

I loved this!!!  Well written with a clever twist.  Now I'm wondering if it was grandma...or that silly wolf who did the spanking (following what I know of the original story).  I can't wait for the story of the huntsman.  Well done.

Surprisingly, fairy tales have never been as much fun when I was growing up. The Grandmother is a truly remarkable character. The ending is great - good story, all in all.

Little Red Riding Hood is a favorite of mine, and this is a great twist on the tale. Great use of the hood for a color match! No fair teasing with the last line. Now I want to know what happens with the huntsman.

This was a cute twist on the classic fairy tale. I particularly enjoyed the line, «Your. hands are so big.» «The better to spank you with!» I always thought that some of those fairy tale characters deserved a trip over somebody's lap. Thank you for writing and submitting your story.
