What's past is prologue. Here's the story...

I booked a taxi for eight and got myself all done up in my finery. I had my favourite black dress, La Redoute, and Jimmy Choo shoes. I haven't got much in the way of fine clothes, but this was my best. I looked at myself in the mirror before I went out, and even I was impressed. I scrub up well.

For a tart.

The taxi driver made trivial conversation on the way, which I was glad of, as it took my mind of what was going to happen and helped to relax me. By the time we reached Davenport I felt quite chilled. I paid the driver and turned towards the hotel, and instantly felt the same bout of nerves as I had the other night. However brave I try to convince myself I'm being, my body always reveals itself. I'd never been in The Prosperous, and I had no idea what the layout would be. It's hard to act nonchalant and move as though you know where you're going and what you're doing if you have no idea where the lifts or stairs are.

But I bluffed my way through easily enough. It was pretty quiet, and the woman at reception was too interested in what was clearly a personal phone call to pay me any heed. I found the stairs and climbed to the first floor. There was a giant mirror on the landing and I checked myself one, final time. Still looking good...

I found Room 48. I took three deep breaths, flattened my hand over my stomach and knocked on the door.

"Come in."

I opened the door.

There, resting on the bed, was Geoff McCabe.
