The 2002 Soc.Sexuality.Spanking
Summer Short Story Contest

RULES CATEGORIES HOW TO ENTER A STORY READERS QUESTIONS
The summer Short Story Contest (SSC) is a long-standing tradition on soc.sexuality.spanking (SSS), and alt.sex.spanking (ASS) before it. The first one was started eight years ago on ASS by Duchin, who read all the stories himself and did the judging with only three other people!
The contest will run between Thursday 6th June 2002 and Sunday 18th August 2002. Story-reviews, results and awards will be posted in early September 2002, and an archive of all of the stories entered in the contest will be made available.
Instructions for how to enter a story in the contest are at the end of this post. Please read them carefully!
The SSC is especially useful as an opportunity for people new to writing about the kink to try for the first time. So why not have a go? More experienced writers are encouraged to try something different, too. To that end, some of the story-categories in the contest are designed to push writers to new ideas. Rather than writing a story and then deciding which category it best fits in, writers are encouraged to look at the categories first, and then write stories which fit nicely within them.
The most important thing about the SSC, though, is that people should have lots of fun writing and reading stories. It should be taken as seriously and/or as frivolously as you choose. No money or valuable prizes will change hands - just a shared enjoyment of the kink.
Have fun!

1. SSC stories must be no longer than 500 words. (Headers, titles, author names, comments, copyright notices and such aren't included in the counts.) A few words longer than 500 is okay, but not too many.
2. Stories need to be about our topic of common interest (that's spanking in case you've been wondering <g>) in some general or loose sense.
3. Stories need to be complete in and of themselves. If you just split a longer story into 500-word chunks, it'll make it really hard to read and review properly. The challenge here is to write self-contained stories of 500 words or fewer.
4. Stories shouldn't have been entered in an SSC before. If a story has been posted before, but not in an SSC, that's cool.
5. SSC stories must be posted to soc.sexuality.spanking, and also be e-mailed to this address, which will make sure they get reviewed and archived: Pablo.Stubbs@newsguy.com
Please note that it's a tradition for SSC stories to be archived publicly. By entering a story in the SSC we assume that you're giving your permission for it to be archived.
6. Please make sure to put the tag 'SSC' (without the quotes) at the start of the Subject: line. It'll help if you also put the category that you're entering the story into in the Subject: line.
7. All stories will be read and reviewed by a panel of readers. The reader reviews will be made available at the end of the contest. In addition, the readers will, collectively, choose winners and runners up in each of the story categories. Other quirky and esoteric awards will be given according to the whims of the readers.

Here are the categories for this year's contest. When you enter a story, choose the category that you'd like it to be entered in, and identify the category clearly when you post, preferably in the Subject: line.
'ADULT': A story in which all of the main characters are adults.
'CHILD': A story in which at least one of the main characters is a child.
'EDGE': A story in which the author deals with subject matter which pushes towards the edge of their fantasies in some way. Authors are encouraged to include a note describing why the story is edgy for them. (Such a note needn't be included in the word-count.)
'SPOOKY': A story with a spooky/eerie theme or twist.
'PERIOD': A story set in some period other than the present day, and in which the period is significant to the story. (Note that the period could be in the future as well as in the past.)
'MINI-SAGA': A story of exactly 50 words, rather than 500. (One or two words either side of 50 is okay, but not more than that please.)
'NOT-MY-KINK': A story in which the author writes about a (spanking-related) kink or orientation which they don't have. Authors are encouraged to include a note describing why they chose to write about this kink, and how it relates to their own. (Such a note needn't be included in the word count.)
'FIRST/LAST': Stories using a specific line at the beginning or the end. Here are the lines. (Two will be added each week of the contest.) Choose one and use it as the first or the last line in your story.
'PARODY/POETRY': Poems, and stories/song-lyrics which use some form of parody.

(Please read carefully!) -- So, here's how to enter a story in this year's SSC:
1. Write the story! (That's the hard part done.)
2. Mark the story clearly with the category you've chosen to enter it in. Please choose just one category. Most stories would probably fit in several different categories. Choose the one that you think it best fits.
3. Post the story to soc.sexuality.spanking. Make sure to:
4. Also, send the story by e-mail to this address: <Pablo.Stubbs@newsguy.com> and the story will be forwarded from here to the readers for the contest.
5. Wait for lots of praise about the story. :-) Oh, and get to work writing the next story.

This year the following wonderful people have volunteered to be readers for the SSC. Kudos and many thanks to them. They'll be writing the story reviews, so be nice to them!
