Schadenfreude

By

Mija <mijita@newsguy.com>

I stared, cowering, glad it wasn't me.

Miss Novak's eyes blazed as she thrust the letter at Kelly.

"Bring it back, signed."

Kelly, tearfully, "Please miss, if I bring this home my dad'll whip me with his belt."

My face flushed hot.  My eyes closed, horrified that I wanted to watch.

This story made me shiver.  The very short format was perfect for exploring the idea of Schadenfreude - taking shameful pleasure in another's misfortune - especially given Mija's direct approach and crisp choice of words.  Memorable and well-conceived.

There's a lot told here in such a short space, though it feels as if we need to know a little more, particularly about the narrator. Her own situation clearly informs her reaction, so we're left wondering what that is. What this does do very nicely, is spin off all sorts of images and ideas and possibilities. We necessarily fill in the picture of the belt-whipping, and it's a powerful one, for the reader as much as for the narrator.

I LOVE this! This was so intense in every word. I loved it before I knew the meaning of the title, pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.  Such a tasty little morsel, Mija!

A nice first person story. This story gives us a nice glimpse into a moment in time. A moment that many can relate to. Nicely Done...
