Hot Down Summer in the City

He dragged her by the wrist, tripping and resisting through the side alley. Her protests echoing in the muggy hot twilight, deterred him about as effectively as the mosquitoes chasing their tangy sweat scent. Bounding the back stairs of their three floor walkup. "Just WAIT, 'til I get you upstairs!"

For some reason after reading this story I wanted to take a cold shower. This story is hot is more ways than one. So descriptive I can almost smell the heat. So much, in so little it seems hardly possible. But that's the whole point of this category, isn't it. Well done.

This story packs an incredible dose of atmosphere and suspense into a scant fify words. The imagery is wonderfully vivid, and the ending left me wanting more. Very well done.

What's great about this tiny fragment, apart from the vivid detail, is the ambiguity. Are they lovers? Father and daughter? Something nastier and abusive? We're left to guess, so we fill in all sorts of answers, carrying on their journey up to wherever they're going, and what's going to happen there. We know it'll be worth seeing. Very nicely done - captures in a moment a much bigger story.

To be honest, and this is no reflection on the writer, I hate these mini sagas and I personally regret that this category ever got included. In 50 words it is impossible to develop any real theme or a sense of the writer' s true ability to sustain any creativity. However given that it was included its average like most of the rest.
