Friday Morning

Gloria

I didn’t want to leave him last night. I wanted to stay curled up with him. Grabbing him, taking him on his own bed had been so much fun, and so hot! I came so quick and so hard, and so did he! Then dinner here, making love in my room, walking him home and tucking him in...

And I made it home before either of my parents. I hoped things worked out. I didn’t even hear when they got in. I did some homework, took a quick shower, and crashed.

Friday -- his last day in The Program. What a week! It was only Monday I first saw him in the hall at school, that bitchin tan...

Tomorrow would be fun, an actual date! Well we might as well go out and do things, we’d done about everything else you could do inside... And tonight, maybe...

Hungry, for a lot of things! And I didn’t want to be late today!

Mom and dad were already downstairs.

“Good morning, Glorybug,” mom greeted me.

“Is it?” I asked cautiously.

She looked at dad; both of them smiled.

“Yes dear, it is. We were successful last night, and so was your father.”

I sighed as I sat down. Daddy laughed and squeezed my shoulders.

“Were you successful as well?” he asked.

How the hell do you answer that? I felt myself blushing.

“I’d guess so,” daddy told mom as she put a cup of coffee in front of him.

“Did things work out okay at school? mom asked. “They certainly started out rough.”

I shook my head. There wasn’t enough time to even start! Yet the way things were after school, all those kids... “I think things are getting better,” I told them.”

“Last day of The Program,” daddy said.

I smiled. “For one bunch, but Monday starts another week.”

“Want a ride this morning?” he asked.

“Nope, I’ll walk -- and I’ll go by Ron’s a little early.”

Gwen

I was ready for the morning. Homework done; that would not happen again. It took me a while to get to sleep. Weird dreams, walking down hallways naked, looking for something. Walking and walking, so slow, looking for something, even though I didn’t know what it was.

Mom was downstairs; dad and my brother were having breakfast already. I kissed my little brother on the head and he made a disgusted noise.

Mom gave me a raised eyebrow as she set my breakfast down in front of me.

I smiled. “If yesterday afternoon is any clue, today’s going to be easier.”

“Please be careful,” dad told me.

I took a breath. Would I? “Yes, dad.”

Ron

Friday morning -- the week was almost gone! And what a week!

When I got downstairs, my aunt was sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper and drinking coffee.

“Good morning, Ron,” she greeted me.

“Good morning, auntie,” I replied as I heated up a bagel.

“I’m very sorry for what happened yesterday morning,” she told me.

“Things worked out.”

“I’ll be leaving for Dallas this afternoon; we’ll be back around eight Sunday night. Are you sure you’ll be okay?” she asked.

I nodded, then remembered. I looked at her when I replied. “I’ll be fine. There’s a swim party at the country club tomorrow.”

“That’s wonderful! I’ll leave some money for you, just in case.”

“So things worked out?” I asked her.

“Oh yes! Very late last night, or was it early this morning? We’ve got a new contract, and avoided a lot of trouble.”

I finished my bagel and went upstairs to clean up before going to school.

Gloria

I knocked on the door of Ron’s house -- I hope I caught him before he left. And a woman answered! Guess she’s her aunt.

“Hi,” I told her, “I’m Gloria, Gloria Saunders. Is Ron still home?”

“Oh! You’re Doctor Saunders’ daughter? Yes, he is -- please come in!”

As she led me to the kitchen she said, “Thank you so much for rescuing Ron yesterday morning! I’m really sorry for the confusion. Hopefully we’ve gotten things straightened out.”

Excuses. “Ron really ought to have a cell phone so he can call you,” I told her.

She actually turned and looked at me. A pause as she looked in the air. “Yes, you’re right.” She looked up in the air for a bit. “I should have time... Anything else we should consider, dear?”

Is she for real? Never had kids, that’s for sure! I shook my head.

“I’m glad you’re here, dear. If you think we’re missing something, please let us know. We’re leaving this afternoon and not returning until Sunday evening; I believe I mentioned that to your mother. Yes, she said they’d be available if anything were to come up.”

“We’ll take good care of Ron,” I let her know.

She shook her head. “Thank you, dear. Carl and I never had children, and I think that’s probably for the best... I hope to see more of you, dear! Thank you again for rescuing Ron, and please thank your father as well.”

“No problem -- we’ll take good care of him.” I assured her. I was getting wet.

Ron

Who was I looking at in the mirror? I’m not Japanese; I’m not Mexican. Who am I? Who am I supposed to be?

Standing there, looking in the mirror as I brushed my teeth...

I started to laugh... Japanese? Mexican? Those are labels. Those are labels other people use. Those labels are not me. And those labels are not my problem.

I’m right here, right now. I have things to do. Let other people worry about labels.

I laughed.

And the baka in the mirror laughed with me.

Downstairs, Gloria was in the kitchen! “My aunt still here?” I asked.

“Nope, she left. I...”

I pulled her into my arms and gave her a kiss. That was one of the things I needed to do!

Gwen

There was a crowd at the door when I got to school, a big crowd, a noisy crowd. I had a bad feeling, until I looked closer -- I didn’t see any of the troublemakers! Well, Kevin was there, but he gets dropped off at this end of school; I don’t think he’d do anything, not now. Would Mary be here? I hoped so. I hope she wouldn’t bail. I felt things would be different -- they’d been different yesterday afternoon,

I saw two of the angels. Lots of swim folks. Even Ms. Kelsey! In the parking lot -- Mary was here! I saw her getting out of a car, and went over to her.

“I’m so glad you’re here!” I told her and gave her a hug.

Her dad got out of the car. “We’re very glad you’re here as well,” he told me.

He gave Mary a hug. “Sure you don’t want me to stay?” he asked her.

She looked at me. “That’s okay,” she told him.

We watched him get back in the car and drive off. As he did, I saw the boy walk up. His head was down and he was shuffling his feet until he saw us, then he brightened up.

“Let’s go,” I told them, grabbing their hands.

The first bell rang. No sign of the seniors, that cheerleader... I saw Ron and Gloria walk up, holding hands. How did I feel about that? Good, I guess. He looked more relaxed, happier than I’d seen him any morning so far.

The four of us, the two juniors, Ron, and I went up the stairs together. And kids actually clapped and cheered! It was different today!

We got undressed without incident. Mary even managed to smile! We headed into the building. I thought I heard something going on behind us, but I didn’t pay any attention to it, I was making sure the juniors got in.

“This is the last day!” I told them. “We made it! Have fun!”

Joyce

Sitting in Ed’s office again. Two periods down and five to go, and the week would be over!

Ed came in, smiling.

“Have you been in the same building I’ve been in this morning?” I asked him.

He chuckled as he sat in his chair. “Oh, I think so. How did things go on your end?”

“With one minor issue, things went well,” I told him.

“And that was?” he asked.

“Some kids never learn. Kevin tried to spit on Ron and Gwen as they walked by after getting undressed. He neglected to look both ways first... Two of our school lettermen and an Angel grabbed him and stuffed him in a trash can, head first.”

Ed nodded and smiled. “Nice. Going to do any follow-up?”

I shrugged. “Other than remind him he’s eligible for The Program? No. How did things go with Madsen et al?”

Ed leaned back. “Let’s see... I wouldn’t bet against Alice Lim on anything -- she got all but two of the kids in that class to sign over to Tom, and those two are out of town.”

“Impressive! How did Mr. Madsen take it?”

“Oh, I think he was taken completely by surprise. He responded better than I could have imagined. When he asked why this was happening, Alice responded before I could. She told him it was because he had clearly and specifically told her and the others in the class that their grades depended on what they believed, and that was unacceptable. Well, he went ballistic! Fire and brimstone -- they would all roast in Hell, he was more concerned with their salvation, ad nauseum. Oh, did I mention that Burnham and Wilson from the district office were with me this morning? After I mentioned what was going on to them last night, they decided they might want to be here. Especially after Doctor Lim spoke with them last night. They’re still meeting with Madsen, but I expect he’s going to retire.”

“And so early in the school year...”

Ed nodded. “This one is in the hands of the gods now.”

I shook my head. “The gods can be pretty fickle...”

He shrugged. “What’s our downside in this? That we didn’t catch it sooner? How many weeks into the school year are we? And we have a voluminous paper trail from last year, replete with contrite agreements to behave. I don’t think we’re going to catch a lot on this one.”

I raised another eyebrow. “Even though the District is the hammer on this one, the anvil, and that’s us, is still going to feel it.”

Ed nodded again. “I’ve learned not to disagree with you, dear. Oh, another small matter...”

I cringed; I couldn’t help it.

He smiled and shook his head. “Not that bad, I think. You view Cartwright as a fence sitter?”

I thought for a moment. “With respect to The Program, yes. Why?”

“It seems she’s found a reason to keep her last period class just a few minutes late every day this week -- one of our Angels believes it’s a deliberate act to keep her from assisting at the back door.”

I sighed. “One of my student aides is in that class -- I’ll talk to her. But if you’re talking about Joan, I’d believe her. Poor girl -- Madsen at the beginning of the day and Cartwright at the end. I don’t think she’s being paranoid -- I believe her.”

“Oh, I do,” he told me. “And I received this tidbit in passing from Doctor Ken Lim of our school board when he called me at home for a friendly chat last night. Let’s get some confirmation, or at least more info. I’ll have a friendly chat with her anyway. But it sounds like we’ve smoked out another one.”

I nodded. “Sounds like it to me.”

Ron

I don’t know what got into Ms. Foster; she had some weird questions for Gwen and me in class. And something was going on with Kevin -- he looked really down when he walked in. Dana laughed at him and I asked her to please stop. I thought I was trying to help -- but all he did was give me another nasty look.

We spent most of the period in Ms. Foster’s class talking about The Program. Dana was right; we’d all learned from The Program this week. I learned another thing -- even though Dana might not have been the brightest person in the class, when she spoke, she spoke from her heart.

After class, I told Gwen we could meet at my locker and walk into the girl’s locker room together. She took a deep breath, and smiled.

And that’s what we did -- we met at my locker. Gwen looked, I don’t know, excited? She was a little out of breath. Her nipples were hard and very pretty, and I don’t think it was all because of the cold air.

“Not scared of walking in there?” I asked her.

She shook her head, smiling. “No.” She took a breath. “Let’s have some fun!”

Oh really?

“Hey guys!” Gloria called out as she walked up. We both hugged her.

By the time we got to the door to the girl’s locker room, I was hard. So were Gwen’s nipples, more than they’d been at my locker. Of course other kids had been touching and feeling us along the way, and Gloria had an arm around my waist. Funny how some girls “congratulated” Gwen and managed to brush her in a way that made her tremble.

“Ready?” I asked Gwen.

She nodded.

“See you guys at lunch!” Gloria yelled to us over her shoulder as she walked off.

I took Gwen’s hand and we walked in the door. We turned a corner, and saw those senior girls. They saw us. Gwen sighed, dropped my hand, and walked right to them!

Joyce

I walked into Ed’s office still laughing.

“Want to share?” Ed asked as I sat down.

“Bev Foster thinks she has a bodhisattva on her hands, in her class.”

“A what?” Ed asked with a straight face. “Enlighten me.”

I laughed so hard I almost fell out of the chair!

But when I slowed down enough to catch my breath, he was just looking at me. “Tell me you know,” I pleaded with him.

He frowned. His mustache looked displeased.

I wiped the tears from my eyes and tried to compose myself. “A bodhisattva in Buddhism is an enlightened being, one on their way to becoming a Buddha.”

Ed grunted and managed a smile. “I see...”

I shook my head. “The problems centering around Ron? Our quizzing him on who he is, all that?”

“Yes,” Ed replied.

“Ron walked into Bev’s class this morning looking, well, she said he looked at ease, very self-confident. When Bev quizzed him, he explained to her that all the trouble wasn’t his problem, it was other people having problems putting labels on him, and he wasn’t a label. Not his problem!”

Ed nodded, managing to smile a bit.

“When she pressed him on who he was, he told her it didn’t matter -- he was here, now. She asked him if he’d figured this out while sitting under a tree. Do you get that reference?”

Ed frowned. “I’m not a complete savage, dear.”

“I know -- and I’m really glad you’re here, especially this week! Well, I don’t think Ron got it, not entirely. He told her he figured it out looking in a mirror. She asked him what he saw in the mirror. Know what he answered?”

“The sound of one something or other?” Ed guessed.

I shook my head. “No. He said a word in Japanese, then smiled and told her, ‘Illusion.’ ”

Ed sighed. “Way to heavy for me.”

I laughed again, tears forming. “Oh, it’s so good! And he thanked the others in the class for teaching him -- Gwen, Dana, even Kevin.”

Ed shook his head. “And so everything is smooth sailing?”

I managed a short laugh. “Oh hell no! Bev said Kevin gave him another nasty look. But she really thinks Ron has come out of his shell. And Gwen looked solid and happy as well. You know the junior kids both showed up this morning.”

He nodded. “The Program continues to transform lives,” he said with a substantial amount of sarcasm.

“And we’ve survived another week of it,” I told him.

He pointed a finger at me. “Almost! It ain’t over yet!”
