Shortlisted The Age of Twitter
Cherries Are Red (But Dianna is Redder)
Disclaimers: I own neither Glee nor the lovely ladies Dianna Charlotte Agron and Lea Michele Sarfati (or anyone else I mention, like the gorgeous Amber Patrice Riley or the beautiful Jenna Ushkowitz). This story is based purely in fiction, though the Facebook picture comments from which the idea was drawn are 100% real. I do not know either woman personally and I have no proof to support that they are actually in a relationship - and Lea is adamant that her boyfriend is Theo Stockman, a Broadway actor currently in the Ensemble of American Idiot. The picture that the comments are about can be found at www.trendhunter.com/ photos/72225.
Dianna licked her lips as she stared at the picture of Lea from their photo shoot for the May edition of Glamour Magazine. Her girlfriend had a maraschino cherry in her mouth and an incredibly "fierce" look on her face. She scrolled down to the comment box and wrote,
"Daaaayyyuummm girl." Dianna clicked 'post' and a little gray rectangle popped up that said,
Di Charlotte Agron Daaaayyyuummm girl.

The blonde then shut her laptop down and went to sleep with a smile on her face. She dreamt about all the naughty things that she could do with Lea that involved whipped cream and a jar full of maraschino cherries.
When she woke up the next morning, she checked Facebook, and there was a little red flag that told her she had a notification.
Lea Michele Sarfati commented on her photo.
Dianna clicked the link to the picture and giggled as she read the comment that the tan singer had made.
Lea Michele Sarfati What? 0:)

The blonde figured she'd make the brunette wait in suspense for a little while, so she went to their rehearsal. The two never really talked, but during all of their scenes they covertly glanced at one another and gave each other secret smiles.
When they stopped for dinner, Dianna quickly logged into Facebook on her computer and commented on the photo again.
Di Charlotte Agron YOU SEXAAYYY.

She didn't see her diminutive co-star for the rest of the evening, but when she got home she fell into bed to watch a movie. Around midnight, her phone buzzed. She'd gotten a text notification from Facebook Mobile telling her that, once again, Lea Michele Sarfati had commented on her picture. Dianna opened her laptop and checked the photo.
Lea Michele Sarfati Awwwwww, spank you. :D

Dianna paled at the message. To their fans, it would just look like Lea had typed in 'baby-talk', but to her it was a clear sign that Lea was either really worked up or really angry - likely both.
Unfortunately for the co-stars, their '"BFF" relationship in photographs and interviews was "detrimental to the show's success", according to their FOX agents, so they had to be kept under wraps. Dianna knew that lots of people already suspected romantic involvement and that Lea's beard-of-a-boyfriend, Theo, was just that. They called Lea and Dianna 'Achele' and lapped up every image or video clip of the two being cuddly. Lea and Dianna didn't want to hide their relationship, but they didn't want to lose their jobs, so they kept most of their snuggles to private.
But sometimes Lea was too hot, and Dianna felt compelled to point it out. Still, it was no surprise that Dianna heard the door unlock and felt her girlfriend's presence in the apartment.
"Come here, Dianna." The small brunette stood in the doorway of her bedroom, smacking a riding crop against her palm. Dianna shivered.

Well, this story demonstrates either that "art imitates life" or that "life imitates art," but I'm not quite certain which one it is. Was it because of the two young ladies' rather sensuous photo shoot, reflecting eating a cherry (some symbolism there) as an erotic event, that their flirtation on Facebook developed so deeply? Or did it happen the other way around, their already existing mutual attraction making the photographs (particularly the one of Lea about to not only consume the cherry but also to dominate it--or Dianna) come alive with the smoldering electricity between the two of them?
This strikes me as an unusual relationship, two attractive young women working side-by-side yet barely speaking, but OTOH carrying on a supposedly secret romance via very brief Facebook exchanges--I suppose that a show business career may require such a furtive relationship, at least in public.
I liked the clever use of "spank you" in Lea's last message, apparently expressing both gratitude (a slight variation on "thank you") and her promise to do exactly that to Dianna. When they'd finally gotten together in private--just Lea, Dianna and Lea's riding crop--I was thinking "It's about time!" with all that erotic energy finally to be released. This is definitely a story that projects sensuality, even via Facebook messages.

My only problem with this story is that it ended well before I wanted it to! ;)
Although I am a fan of "Glee," and know the characters in question (or, hopefully, in flagrante delicto even now!) a real strength of the story is how it works ensuring that non-Glee fans have enough information to appreciate the story, people who are Glee cognoscenti aren't bored by too much explanation getting in the way of the flow of a story. I just (barely!) finished a novel by an author who spent the first three chapters back-filling with the plots of the last seven books in the series -- and, by book number eight, she ought to have learned a bit about writing! She ought to read this story to get ideas!
Another strong point is how the characters of both girls felt "right" -- their thoughts and actions were compatible of girls their age. In a category specifically about a new media, this is particularly important!

An interesting take on a real life relationship, and certainly a fun idea that appeals to the kinky. I don't feel too much about the impending punishement of a woman with so little impulse control that she can't resist telling her secret lover quite publicly that she's "Sexaayy" despite an agreement to keep a lid on their BFF-ness. Since their jobs are on the line, and she knew she slipped up, I suspect she was feeling quite a bit more than "not suprised" when she oppened the door. Guilt, dread, secret delight at her own daring naughtiness, bored hunger and thoughts of a sandwich--any of those could have given the moment her girlfriend unlocked the door a bit more texture.

It's a real strength here that awareness of the people involved doesn't hurt the story at all, because what makes it work is the interesting idea - which is very modern, and also bang-on for the category - of conversation which is simultaneously private and public, and how those relate to each other. The casual back-and-forth, both aware and oblivious of how public it is, feels very real, and the characters' hunger for the connection comes across. The tension is lost a little at the end, though. It would be nice if we were discovering the characters as they were discovering each other's kinks - perhaps accidentally - but the final scene is maybe a bit too easy. Be careful also about repetition of phrases like "the blonde", and "the brunette". Reducing the characters to hair colours makes them seem thinner than they should be.
