The Brown Girl

By

Valerie Meilong <VMeilong1@excite.com>

'I AM as brown as brown can be,
   My eyes as black as a sloe;
I am as brisk as a nightingale,
   And as wild as any doe.

'My lover sent me a letter sad,
   Not far from yonder town,
That he no longer fancied me,
   Because I was so brown.

'I wrote a letter back again,
   Said his love I valu'd not,
I cared not if he fancied me
   Or whether he could not.

'He sent a letter back again,
   That he lay there sick to death,
And would I go there speedily
   To give him up his faith.'

Now you shall hear what I did do
   To this fickle love-sick man;
It was a whole long summer's day
   In a mile a going on.

When I came to my lover's bed,
   Where he lay dangerous sick,
I then could not for laughing stand
   Upright upon my feet.

I had a white wand in my hand,
   And I smacked it on his bum;
'Then like a rod he stiffened up,
   'T'was surely he would come'.

'Prithee,' said he, 'enough, enough,
   Prithee forget and forgive;
O grant me yet a little space,
   That I may be well and live.'

'O never will I forgive,' said I
   So long as I have breath;
So die. I'll dance above your grave
   Where you do lie beneath.

I whipped and whipped, and whipped him well,
   'Enough, enough,' he said,
'My bottom's sore, with scarlet stripes.
   Enough, let's go to bed.'

'T'was not the bed for my fickle love
   Though other maidens may;
But one day I'll dance on my lover's grave
   A whole twelvemonth and a day.'

A spanko twist on the traditional ballad in which the Brown Girl of the title, jilted by her lover, exacts a rather morbid revenge.  As with Meilong's previous entry, some readers might have found a reference to the parody's source to be helpful, however I find myself sympathizing with the alternative view, that the sufficiently interested reader should be expected to enjoy researching the matter for {him/her}self.
