SECOND CHANCE © 2004-2007 By Lessa and Takara Soong
The Enterprise arrived at Starbase 54 on schedule and the delegates from the Security Council began to beam aboard. Data, Gemma and, of course, Worf were on hand to greet the two parties of six and the last of four. Worf and Data were both surprised to see they recognized one of the faces of the final four. “Jenna...Flanders?” Data asked, recalling the names listed on the data PADD the captain had given him three days ago. The woman who used to be Jenna D’Sora and Data’s first girlfriend, beamed as she walked down from the transporter. “Commander Worf, Commander Data, it’s wonderful to see you both again.” Jenna gave Worf’s arm a friendly squeeze, but when she came over to Data she grinned up at him and wrapped her arms around Data’s shoulders. Data leaned down, stiffly embracing her, very much aware that Gemma was beside him, watching. Once Jenna released him, still grinning, she told Data how good it was to see him. “I heard how we lost you and Q brought you back. He may have given us hell before, but I’ll never think bad of him again. I was very upset when we thought you were dead, Data. I’m so glad we were wrong.” Worf led the other three guests out of the room, to show them to their quarters, nodding as he passed Jenna. This left Jenna, Data and Gemma. “I’m going to help Mr. Worf, and let you catch up with your friend, Commander,” Gemma offered, feeling very much like a third wheel. Looking distinctly uncomfortable, Gemma ducked out of the room, making Data feel like a heel. “That was our new second officer, Lieutenant Commander Gemma Corazon. She will be performing with me at the reception that we have planned together for tonight,” Data informed Jenna, pointing at the place where Gemma had been standing. He knew he sounded as nervous as he was. “She was a bit abrupt, wasn’t she?” Jenna noted. Data furrowed his brow, insulted on Gemma’s behalf. “She left because she did not wish to intrude. She is a very special person and an exceptional officer.” “Okay, Data. Oh my God! Data, you’re upset. I thought I heard you installed your emotion chip but it later overloaded and didn’t work anymore?” “It was also restored by Q. Perhaps I should take you to your quarters now?” Data suggested. “Sure, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you, Data. I’m really happy to see you again.” She looked at him with a very serious expression on her face, but Data turned away to lead her out of the transporter room. Jenna sighed and followed along behind him. “You’re still the same Data,” she laughed calmly as she said this. Data stopped and looked back at her. “What were you expecting?” “I was hoping that over the years you learned to pick up subtleties.” Jenna came closer again and took his face in her hands. “I’m really glad to see you again. You’ve always mattered to me, and now I hope I can matter to you.” Without another word, she pulled Data’s face closer and kissed him on the lips. Data was so stunned by her kiss he was speechless. It took him a moment to recover his composure. “Jenna, I feel it necessary to inform you that I have recently begun a romantic relationship with Commander Corazon,” Data advised her. “I will take you to your quarters now.” “How long have you been seeing each other?” Jenna asked. She slipped her arm around Data’s so they would be walking down the corridor arm in arm. Data was uncomfortable with this however he was unsure how to discreetly remove Jenna’s arm from his. “We have had two dates so far,” Data smiled as the memories of both evenings filled his mind. “I see.” Jenna looked to Data. “She wouldn’t mind if two old friends spent some time together, would she? I’d love to have the opportunity to catch up with you. It’s been a while.” “Perhaps the three of us could have dinner while you are aboard,” Data offered. “I’m sure we would bore her, Data. We’d be talking about people she hasn’t met. That would be no fun for her.” When they reached the guest quarters assigned to Jenna, Data started to excuse himself to leave. “Data, I have never been on a Sovereign class ship before. Would you give me a tour after the reception, please.” “I am sure I can arrange for you to be given a tour of the ship, Jenna-” he started. “No, Data, I want you to give me the tour,” she insisted. “You know so much more about the ship than anyone.” Data realized she would not take no for an answer so he agreed. “If you will excuse me, I must continue with the preparations for the reception.” Data sighed as he made his way down the corridor. He would talk to Gemma before the reception to let her know of Jenna’s request. He hoped she would understand. The next two hours passed quickly as Data and Gemma saw to the last details. As it was a formal reception both were wearing their dress uniforms. “You look very beautiful, Gemma,” Data complimented when they finally had a moment to talk. “And you look so handsome, Data,” Gemma smiled as the blush in her cheeks subsided. “Is something wrong? Is there a problem?” “Jenna has requested a tour of the ship after the reception. She has insisted that I conduct the tour,” he sighed. “I would much prefer to spend time with you...” “It’s okay, Data. I understand,” she assured him. The reception proceeded without a hitch. As far as Data was concerned the only problem was the lack of time he was able to spend with Gemma. As they were hosting the reception, both needed to mingle with the guests so they spent most of the evening apart. The highlight for him, as well as most of the guests, was the recital. The pieces Gemma had chosen were beautiful. The emotions expressed through the music moved almost everyone. When the reception ended, Jenna immediately came to collect Data for her tour. She ushered him from the lounge so quickly Data was only able to give Gemma a woeful look as he was pulled through the doors. Jenna insisted on holding onto Data’s arm as they began the tour. Data decided he would only show her what would be on the usual tour the captain or he would give guests, but Jenna seemed intent on having as much of his time as she could. She talked about old times and asked him how Spot was. She told him how she had gotten married, but her husband, Ned, had been killed in the line of duty. That had been two years ago and she did not like the lonely nights. “Perhaps you should get a pet,” Data suggested, knowing damn well what she was hinting at, but hoping he could feign ignorance. “No, I don’t think that will be enough,” she purred. “I need a bigger body to keep me warm.” “There are several types of dogs that are large, but make wonderful pets.” Jenna put her hand on her hips and shook her head at him. “Are you angry with me for breaking up with you all those years ago?” she asked. “No, your reasoning was sound. I missed the time we spent together after you left, but I adjusted quickly,” he told her truthfully. She put her hands on his chest and looked into his eyes. “I didn’t want to do that, Data. I missed you too, but I wanted what you were not capable of giving. It was unfair to me and unfair to you to keep going. But now it can be different. You are capable of those feelings now and I realize I still have them for you.” Data felt disconcerted by all of this. He knew Jenna had tried very hard to teach him about dating and what was expected. She had been patient and kind, and Data was thankful she had ended their relationship for the reason she had and not because he had been unacceptable in her eyes. She wanted more of him, but that part of him had yet to exist. “Jenna, it is getting late. I should escort you to your quarters now. I have things I must attend to, but I am sure I will see you again before you leave the Enterprise. I hope you enjoyed the tour.” Jenna could not deter Data this time. He took her to her quarters, but left quickly before she could even attempt to kiss him again. It was not as late as Data had tried to make it sound, so he headed straight for Gemma’s quarters, signaling her first to make sure she was still awake. “What’s wrong, Data? Come in. Did something happen on the tour with your friend?” Gemma said all this as she pulled the distressed looking android into her quarters and led him to the couch. She kept hold of his hands, trying to comfort him, his upset was so strong. “I dated her in the past,” Data told Gemma. “It was many years before my emotion chip and it failed because she wanted more and I could not give it to her. She wants to try again now!” Data blurted all of this out, as fast as he could to get it over. Gemma did not even flinch. She knew Data was feeling guilt, but he was also feeling distaste and it was not directed at her. “Do you have any interest in trying again with her, Data?” Gemma asked calmly. “No!” he assured her strongly. “I have no interest, but I cannot seem to make her understand. I do not wish to upset or hurt her, but I do not want her to do anything which could damage my relationship with you. She kissed me today, Gemma. I did not expect her to do so. I am sorry.” Gemma relaxed. Now she knew where the guilt was coming from. “Did you initiate the kiss?” “No!” “Did you kiss her later?” “No!” “Do you want to kiss her?” “NO!” “Do you want to kiss me?” Data stopped. His eyes filled with a yearning. “Yes,” he said softly, hopefully. Gemma smiled and leaned over to kiss him. Data pulled her into his arms very quickly and kissed her tenderly and then sensuously. Gemma broke the kiss to look at him. “I trust you, Data. Empathically, I also know you’re being completely honest with me and I’m glad you came to tell me all of this.” She caressed his cheek, fondly. “I don’t want you to hurt her either, but telling her this is not a good time for you shouldn’t be too bad.” Gemma kissed him tenderly. “Go home, Data. I’ll see you in the morning. Don’t worry about any of this, but thank you for coming and giving me your sweet kiss before I went to bed.” She walked the dazed android to her door, kissed him tenderly once again and then watched him head for his quarters. Data could not help smiling as he made his way to his quarters. The research he had done many years ago had indicated many women would have been angry with a man if another woman had kissed him. Gemma said she trusted him and he pledged to himself he would never do anything to betray that trust. It was 0500 when the door chimes to Data’s quarters rang. He was not expecting a visitor so he had no idea who it could be. His first thought was maybe Gemma wanted to have breakfast together before their shift started. When the door slid open he discovered...Jenna. “Well, don’t look so happy to see me,” she told the obviously disappointed Data. “I thought we could have breakfast together this morning, Data.” She gave him no choice as she pulled him from his quarters. Data resisted at first but then decided this would be a good opportunity to let Jenna down gently. Breakfast was pleasant enough considering Jenna was doing almost all the talking. “Jenna, I need to speak to you about something,” he told her when she finally paused to take a bite of her toast. “You have spoken numerous times since you came on board that you wish to rekindle a romance between us. I do not wish to hurt you, however, as I indicated yesterday, I am already in a relationship with Commander Corazon.” “Data, two dates is not a relationship,” Jenna smiled as she took another bite of toast. Data was about to respond when Captain Picard’s voice came over his comm badge ordering him to report to his ready room. After acknowledging the order, Data began to rise from the table. “Jenna, you need to understand that I cannot offer you anything more than friendship. I am sorry if you find that to be inadequate.” Data then turned and exited the lounge. When Data entered the ready room he was pleasantly surprised to see Gemma had also been summoned. After they gave Picard an update on their guests, the captain began to speak of the previous evening’s reception. “I wanted to let you both know that I have received very positive feedback from the delegation regarding the reception. They have indicated the highlight of the evening for them was the recital. It was the highlight for me also. Well done!” “Thank you, sir,” Gemma smiled. “Thank you, Captain. I must confess performing with Commander Corazon was also the highlight of my evening,” Data added. Data was relieved his duties kept him on the bridge most of the day. The few times he left, Jenna somehow managed to track him down. Gemma could sense the frustration Data was experiencing. When she suggested they have dinner together in the lounge that evening he happily agreed although he did request they dine in his quarters instead. As the couple got off the lift heading for their respective quarters, Gemma stopped him. “Why don’t you want to eat in the lounge, Data?” she asked, touching his arm gently. Data sighed heavily. “Each time I left the bridge today, Jenna somehow found me and did her best to keep me from my duties. She also came to have breakfast with me at 0500 hours this morning.” Data again sighed. Since Data’s quarters were just a few meters away, Gemma pulled him there, saying she wanted to talk to him privately for a moment before she went to change. “You told me you thought of her as a friend, don’t you want to spend some time with her. I told you last night that I trust you. If that’s what’s upsetting you, there’s no need. I-“ Data ran a finger down her cheek, gently. “No, that is not it. I reminded her that I am in a relationship with you, but she insists two dates is not a relationship. She believes there is no reason I cannot see her as well.” Gemma digested this. “How do you feel about her assessment? Do you agree with it?” She could feel anger coming from Data at once. “I do not. I see no relevance in the number of dates we have had. While I am aware that many humans date more than one person at a time, I do not feel comfortable with that practice. I am dating you. I wish to continue to date you and I have no wish to date anyone else.” Suddenly Data wondered how Gemma felt about those topics. “What are your feelings? Do they differ from mine?” he asked sounding insecure. Now it was Gemma’s turn to caress his cheek. “No, not in the slightest. So I think we should have dinner in the lounge.” Data looked upset again. “She will interrupt our meal. I predict a 7.124% probability that she will not.” “Then we’ll invite her to join us another time, but politely inform her that we are sharing a private meal.” Data considered this. “An intimate dinner, a special evening together. It would not be a lie as I feel every moment I spend with you is special.” Gemma blushed. “You’re embarrassing me, Data,” she scolded him, looking towards her feet. He lifted her chin with a finger. “Okay, I’ll stop blushing, but you have to stop making me blush. Have we agreed to go to the lounge?” she asked. Data sighed again. “I will acquiesce to your suggestion.” Gemma giggled at his glum expression. “If you stop pouting I’ll put my hair up for you,” she offered, tilting her head to the side and grinning at him. Data slowly smiled, liking her kind of bribery. Gemma stood on her toes to kiss his nose, but that was not enough for him. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her on the lips. Gemma left him a moment later, rushing to her quarters to change. Data rang for her twenty minutes later. He was breathless with surprise when she answered the door. Her auburn hair was piled on top of her head, leaving her beautiful neck bare. She wore a printed sheath dress, which featured a draped neckline that plunged in the back. Data grinned at her, but was also having trouble controlling his emotional state. The trails of tears that Gemma’s dress and hairstyle revealed were more than appealing. She came towards him and wrapped her arms around his waist. “I think you like my dress,” she noted grinning knowingly at him. Data could not resist. As he lifted his arms to return her embrace, he let one hand touch her bare back. The memory of Captain Picard telling Data how touch could have such a powerful affect on humans and connect them to an item came back to the android. Data still did not understand this in relation to inanimate objects, but here and now, Data understood how much closer to Gemma he felt each time they touched or kissed. Her lips were inviting as he kissed her now. The feel of her wonderfully soft skin as he ran his hand over her back overwhelmed him. He lost all interest in dinner, but he knew the one and only woman he was dating needed to eat, so reluctantly Data broke their kiss, took the arm of his beautiful lady and escorted her to dinner. The level of activity in the lounge was lower than normal. A number of challenges had been received from personnel on Deep Space Seven so many crewmembers were busy honing their skills for the various tournaments that had been planned for when the Enterprise arrived. Data led Gemma to a table at the back of the lounge that was next to a large window. The view was very calming but Gemma suspected Data had chosen this out-of-the-way location in case Jenna decided to make an appearance. If that was Data’s plan, it did not work. He and Gemma had just placed their orders when Jenna sat down to join them, not waiting for an invitation. “Hi Data. I thought about that kind invitation of yours for the three of us to have dinner and decided to take you up on it,” Jenna smiled. She then turned to Gemma, “So you are the Enterprise’s second officer. You look so young to hold such a position. I hope you don’t find this too presumptuous, but how old are you?” “Jenna, that is not an appropriate question-” Data started. “It’s okay, Data, I don’t mind answering,” Gemma reassured him. “I’m 27, Jenna.” “My goodness. Five years out of the Academy and you’re already a lieutenant commander. That is amazing. You must know some important people in high places to have risen so quickly,” Jenna laughed. “Jenna, if you are implying that Gemma has not earned her promotions you are very mistaken. She is-” Data had more than a trace of impatience in his voice. “Oh, I was only joking.” She turned from Gemma to Data. “You have always had difficulties in recognizing humor, haven’t you, Data?” Their dinner order arrived before Data had an opportunity to reply, so he let it drop. “So Data tells me you two are an item,” Jenna said to Gemma. “An item?” Gemma asked, puzzled. “Data, I thought you told me you two were an item. Did you stretch the truth?” Jenna asked. “I don’t understand what you mean by an item.” Gemma turned to Data, “What does that mean?” “It means we are involved in a romantic relationship,” Data smiled fondly at her. Her confusion once again reminded him of his own in past situations like this one. “What a strange term,” Gemma said as she shook her head. “Yes, Jenna, Data and I are an item.” Gemma’s eyes were fixed on Data as she spoke. “So is this officially your third date or doesn’t it count since I’m here too?” Jenna smirked. “Whether it’s two dates or three is inconsequential, Jenna,” Gemma smiled. “Emotions indicate when it’s a relationship, not numbers.” “I definitely agree,” Data smiled while reaching for Gemma’s hand across the table. “Data, be a dear and get me a glass of water,” Jenna instructed Data. He reluctantly left the table leaving the two women alone. “Okay, Gemma. I’m going to be blunt with you. I don’t believe you and Data are in a relationship. I want him back and I’m going to do everything in my power to get him back. You may as well back off now so you won’t be too hurt when he breaks up with you,” Jenna advised. “Jenna, if you keep pursuing Data like this you will be the only one who is hurt,” Gemma gently replied. “I know how Data feels about me and how he feels about you.” “You do, do you? And how do you know that?” she asked sarcastically. “I’m empathic. I can sense Data’s emotions,” she related. Jenna sat quietly for a moment, stunned by this revelation. Data, having returned with the glass of water, immediately knew something had happened during his absence. “Data, it doesn’t bother you to be dating what is basically a worm with a pretty shell?” Jenna asked, trying a new approach. “I do not understand what you are asking. Gemma is not a worm.” Both Data and Gemma were confused by this remark. “Well, isn’t that basically what a Trill is?” she stated as if it should be obvious to him. “Gemma is not Trill, Jenna. She is Kriosian. Furthermore I find your description of the Trill to be repugnant. They are a noble species. You could learn much from them,” Data stated. “Now, if you will excuse us, we have heard more than enough here.” Data rose, holding his hand out to Gemma. They started to walk away from the table when Data stopped. “Gemma, please wait here,” Data requested. “There is one more thing I need to tell Jenna.” He walked back to the table, looking down on this woman he had once dated. In an authoritative tone he spoke, “In future you will show the proper respect to a superior officer or I will be forced to report you for insubordination.” Data returned to Gemma and, taking her hand, the two left the lounge. The couple headed for Data’s quarters, but as soon as they walked through the door, Data stopped in his tracks. Gemma could now feel he had been controlling his emotions, but here in his own quarters, he felt free to release and express them. “I do not believe I will be able to maintain a calm expression in Jenna’s presence should she pull another stunt like that again!” He was bubbling over with anger. Gemma just wanted to soothe him, but some of his words confused her. “Pull another stunt?” she repeated. “Does that mean behave badly?” she asked him. Data looked over at her and found the anger was draining away. He smiled gently down at her. “Yes, it does. I am sorry I lost my temper.” He brought his hands to her face and looked at her with great fondness. “Don’t be. We all get angry, Data. You have the same right to get angry as the rest of us do. I will warn you that I don’t think she’s going to give up just yet.” Gemma shrugged helplessly. Releasing her face, Data turned from Gemma and sighed, feeling the anger and frustration return. “How do I convince her I have no interest in her advances?” he growled, walking aimlessly into his living room. Following behind him, Gemma took a seat on his couch and let him walk out some of his anger. “Why don’t you tell me about your prior relationship with her, if you want to. I could try and help, unless you think this would be better for the counselor to do?” Gemma asked, unsure of what she was saying. “No,” Data said, dismissing this suggestion. “While the new counselor is quite capable, I would prefer to discuss this with you.” Now it was his turn to stop short. “If you do not mind hearing the details of my dating relationship with Jenna?” Gemma looked a little uncomfortable, but stipulated, “If you leave out any very private moments, I don’t mind.” Data raised an eyebrow, thinking. “If you are referring to sex, you need not worry. I did not engage in intimacy with Jenna.” Gemma blushed. “Oh, okay. Go ahead then.” She looked away, still blushing, but she was smiling too, so Data did not worry. Still pacing, he told Gemma how the relationship started, how far it progressed and how it ended, only a few weeks later. “I simply was not able to give her what she wanted,” Data concluded, shrugging but still fuming. “But now you can and she wants you,” Gemma observed. Data stopped his pacing, feeling better just from talking to Gemma. He sat down next to her and took her hands in his. “I do not wish to give her anything but friendship. You, however, I wish to give more.” Data leaned in and kissed her. The anger he was feeling seemed to transmute instantly into wanting. He released her hands and wrapped one arm around her as his other hand cupped her cheek at first, but moved into her soft pulled up hair. Gemma broke their kiss after Data pulled some of her hair down with his exploration. She was blushing a deep crimson and looked uncomfortable. “Data, I can feel what you’re feeling – I-I’m just not comfortable with-” she broke off, unable to continue. Data lifted her chin gently. “I am sorry. I have no wish to cause you distress.” “I know that. This is not an area I have a lot of success talking about. Non-Kriosians just don’t seem to understand. But I think you can if...Data, I have a copy of the Yehvengot, the book of happiness. It will explain much better than I can how we are taught to view intimacy. Will you read it?” Data took her hands again. “I would be honored.” Data had heard of the Yehvengot but it was not in the Starfleet database, so he had not been able to read the spiritual book of the Kriosian people. Gemma grinned at him, pleased. She stood, gave him a quick hug and told him she would return with the book. Gemma kept it in her bedroom, beside her bed, so she could read from it often. She grabbed the book and headed back to Data’s quarters, once she fixed the damage done to her hair. With a laugh, Gemma left her quarters. Turning the corner, coming upon Data’s door, Gemma saw that Jenna stood in front of it, talking to an upset Data. “She did not leave, she is right there,” Data was saying and then pointed at the approaching Gemma. “What’s going on?” Gemma asked, clutching the book to her chest, as though for strength. “I saw you leave. I thought I would visit with Data since you were gone,” Jenna explained, with a shrug and a glare for Gemma. “You’re bringing Data a book? Not much of a date if you’re just going to read, is it?” she questioned, sighing at Gemma’s assumed foolishness. “It is a very important book, Jenna. If you will excuse us now, we have a date to continue.” Data reached out for Gemma and pulled her into his quarters past Jenna. With a dismissive nod to Jenna, he ordered the door shut and secured, just in case. As the two moved back into Data’s quarters, Gemma could feel he was at a full boil again. She handed him the book and he scanned the contents before handing it back to her. She could feel he was struggling with his anger in order to better assimilate what he had just read, but was not having much success. “Data, sit down beside me. I’m going to help you relax like you helped me.” “If you are thinking of employing muscle manipulation, it will not help. I have no muscles-“ “No, I wasn’t.” Gemma grinned and patted the space beside her. With a skeptical expression and a sigh, Data sat. She moved them so they faced each other and brought her hands up to his face as she closed her eyes. Curling her fingers in, she caressed the sides of his face in a downward motion. Bringing her hands back to his temple, she repeated this motion. A moment later, Data could feel a calm settling over him. His anger slowly evaporated and a peaceful happiness replaced it. The happiness grew stronger and seemed to also include a joyful excitement. Data felt slightly disoriented from this experience, but clarity returned to him and with it came the certainty these were not his feelings. Opening his eyes, Data saw Gemma open hers as well. She smiled with the excited joy Data could feel. She nodded, answering the question in his eyes. “You told me you could sense my emotions, I was not aware you could also project yours to me.” Gemma smiled, still entranced by what she was feeling from him. “I didn’t know either, until just now. Oh, Data, you have the most beautiful soul. Your emotions - they speak to me.” Data was startled by her choice of words. “You find anger to be beautiful?” he questioned. She laughed, still caressing his face. “All of our feelings have a purpose. I want to get to know all of you. Your joys, fears, what makes you happy, sad, angry. You did not abandon me when I was upset about the slave traders. I will not abandon you for being angry.” Her tone was soothing and peaceful, further helping Data to release his anger and embrace the calm she offered him. With a final sigh, Data relaxed. He opened his eyes again and pulled Gemma’s hands from his face, bringing each one to his lips to kiss with gratitude. He could feel his desire for her return, but he ordered it back, better understanding her feelings on the matter now. In the Yehvengot, Data learned that casual sex between members of the empathic race was distasteful. If there were no deeper feelings between a mating pair, each would know and it became just an act of using the other. This was detrimental to the psyche, they were taught. However, a formal commitment could not be made before the pair knew if they were compatible sexually. Intimacy was seen as a vital part of a committed relationship and it was to be treated accordingly. There was almost a checklist of what needed to be present in a relationship before this next step should be taken. Data could see that while he and Gemma were actually following the correct path, by her beliefs, they were not there yet. Respecting her wishes because he cared for her and because he found the guidelines in the Yehvengot quite practical, Data vowed he would not push her in this area until she told him she was ready. “You have a very beautiful culture, Gemma. The more I learn about your beliefs, about you, the more I want to learn. I want to know everything.” Data gently caressed her cheek as he spoke. “I want to know everything about you too.” Gemma’s expression became a little more serious as she looked at Data. “We haven’t talked about our families, Data. You once mentioned you have a brother, Lore. Tell me about yours, please.” “There is not much to tell. I was created by Dr. Noonien Soong on Omicron Theta. I have no memories of my time at the science colony other than being found by the crew of the Tripoli. I only met my father once, shortly before his death. He was a brilliant man. I have also only met my mother once. She left my father when they were living on Terlina III, after the attack of the Crystalline Entity. She has since remarried and is living on Atrea IV. I recently discovered the existence of my brother, B4. After I was lost, Starfleet Command ordered he be transferred to Starfleet Research. He was a prototype my father had created and was far from sentience. Captain Picard was unable to stop the transfer. I have communicated with him and he is progressing well.” Data paused for a moment, hesitating to continue. “Lore was created prior to me. He had perpetrated many terrible acts before I was forced to fire upon him. He was shut down and disassembled.” Data paused a second time. “I find it very difficult to speak about my brother,” he said as his voice trailed off. “I understand, Data,” Gemma spoke softly. “I did create an offspring. Her name was Lal however she suffered cascade failure and did not live long. She did greatly enrich my life during our brief time together.” Gemma could sense the pain Data still felt from the loss of his child. She reached for Data’s hand, squeezing it gently, wishing she could take the hurt away. “Now please, Gemma, tell me about your family.” “I was very lucky to be raised in a home filled with love,” she began. She told Data about her parents and how their spirituality had guided the family through good times and bad. Now it was her turn to pause. “It seems we have another thing in common, Data” she sighed. “We both have brothers who have brought us shame. My brother, Thierry, is a government official on Krios. He is willing to do anything to advance his career, he cares only about himself.” Data put his arm around Gemma, pulling her close to give her a comforting hug. Gemma turned her head, her gaze penetrating his eyes as if she were looking to the very depth of his being. He kissed her gently on the forehead before wrapping his other arm around her. “Your embrace has such a powerful effect on me, Data. I like that,” she said as she cuddled in closer to him. They stayed in each other’s arms until it was time for Gemma to return to her quarters. Data was expecting to be happier the next day when the Enterprise reached Deep Space Seven. The Federation Security Council members disembarked, but not before Jenna took Data’s hand in hers and rose on her toes to kiss Data’s cheek, right in front of Gemma. Data did not bother to suppress the sigh of impatience as the woman walked to the transporter pad. “Energize,” Data ordered the chief petty officer. As the shimmering began, Data added, “Before I am forced to put my fist through something.” Gemma looked from Data to the chief, without any expression on her face. “You are dismissed, Chief. Return here in fifteen minutes.” While her order confused the man, he did not dare question it. Once the door closed behind him, Gemma ordered it sealed and brought her fingers to Data’s temple. He closed his eyes and allowed her to work her magic with his state of mind. “I should not require your help in this way,” he sighed. Gemma chuckled softly as she continued to caress his face. “You’re dealing with a great many things right now, Data. Maybe this evening you should spend some time alone or maybe with Geordi,” she suggested. Data’s eyes popped open and Gemma could feel his tension levels rise again. “You do not wish to be together?” he sounded hurt. She smiled up at him, fondly. “That’s not it at all. I think I’m causing some of your tension and you just may need a break from that. I don’t want to take over your life, Data. I want us both to still have friends and spend time with them. Mark missed our last poker game and asked if I wanted to get together with him, Faalox and two nurses from sickbay tonight. I was going to ask if you wanted to come with me, but I think you need something that does not involve females you are dating or have dated for an evening.” He still did not look happy. “Did the captain give you tomorrow off?” she asked, closing her eyes again and trying to distract him. “Yes, he called me into his ready room just this morning,” Data told her. “Me too. Do you think I could convince our very handsome first officer to spend some time with the second officer of the Enterprise tomorrow?” she asked, coyly. Data sighed again, but this time he sounded happy. “I would like that very much.” He sighed a third time but this one was laced with disappointment. “We had better get back to the bridge. The captain will want a report.” Feeling in control of his emotions again, Data opened his eyes as Gemma let her hands fall to her sides. He leaned over to kiss her on the forehead. “Will you have breakfast with me tomorrow morning?” he asked. “I take it you want to start early. Have plans for tomorrow already?” she asked, doubting it. “Only to spend that time with you.” Gemma grinned at him. She ordered the door unsealed and they walked out together. “I was thinking we could look around the station and maybe invite Geordi to come with us. I’ve never seen one of the deep space stations before.” “I think that is an excellent idea. I will ask him this evening, while you are refusing to see me.” “Ah!” Gemma exclaimed, indignantly. She looked over to see him grinning at her. She was glad to see a happy expression on his face. She purposely collided with him, nudging him and laughing herself. They made their way back to the bridge to complete the rest of their shift in good spirits. Data talked to Geordi and the two agreed to get together that night for a holodeck adventure. As “Holmes” and “Watson” ambled down the corridor, Geordi could tell his friend’s thoughts were elsewhere. “Are you looking forward to your shore leave tomorrow, Data?” he asked knowing the answer. “Very much. Gemma and I were hoping you would join us.” “I don’t know, Data. I’d just get in the way.” Geordi sounded very unsure of this idea. The thought of being the third wheel was not too appealing. “You would not get in the way. We would both be very disappointed if you did not join us. Please, Geordi.” The expression on Data’s face made it impossible to refuse. “Okay, I’ll come with you two but if I think I’m getting in the way I’ll head off on my own. Deal?” Geordi told him. “Deal,” Data agreed as they entered the holodeck to begin the evening’s mystery. Gemma had met up with Mark, Faalox and nurses Soonlee Hovaczek and Peter Smyth in the lounge. “Gemma, you’re alone,” Mark said surprised. “I thought Commander Data would be with you. You didn’t have a fight or anything?” “Data made plans with Geordi for tonight. Why would you think we had a fight?” “There is no stopping ship gossip, I’m afraid,” Faalox started. “Someone started a rumor the commander had started seeing his former girlfriend, that woman who was with the delegation.” “Yeah, what was her name?” Mark asked. “Lieutenant Jenna Flanders,” Gemma sighed. ~ She’s probably the one who started the rumor. ~ “She didn’t cause any problems for you and Commander Data, did she?” Faalox asked. “No, no problems. Would you mind if we changed the subject though?” Gemma requested. “Of course not but if either of you need to talk you know where my office is,” Faalox reminded her. “So who has shore leave tomorrow?” Mark asked. As it turned out, Mark was the only one who did not. They discussed the various activities that were planned. Soonlee and Peter were on the sickbay Parrises Squares team that had been challenged by Deep Space Seven’s sickbay personnel to a match. Faalox was going to cheer them on as she had never been to a match before. “It’s tough being the new guy in sickbay. I’m the lucky doctor who has to remain on duty,” he sighed. Gemma left the group in the lounge at 2130 to head back to her quarters after being notified there was an incoming communication from Deep Space Seven for her. “Kaylith Scott!” Gemma exclaimed as the view screen came on. “I had no idea you were on DS7.” “I’ve only been here for a couple of months,” Kaylith smiled. “Look at you, second officer of the Enterprise. I’m so proud of you, Gemma, but then I always knew my former roomie was going to be a success. So I hope we’ll be able to get together tomorrow. You do have shore leave I hope.” “I do. What time is your shift tomorrow. We have to get together.” “As it happens I have arranged to have tomorrow off. Call me in the morning so we can make some plans. I’ve got to go now, Gemma, it’s poker night.” Gemma woke up the next morning with high expectations for the day. Data arrived for breakfast just as she was about to put her hair up for him. She ran her fingers through it, twisting it together and reached for a clip as she greeted him. Data came up behind her and gently pulled the clip from her hand. He held her hair back so he could kiss the back of her neck with tenderness, but encouraged her to let her hair fall once he had. “I am very flattered that you so wish to please me, but your hair is attractive down as well. I want you to be comfortable and relaxed today. We are both on leave together and nothing could make me happier.” He kissed her on the cheek before Gemma turned to face him and kiss him on the lips. Once he released her, Gemma took a step back to look at him. It was not often that Data was out of uniform, so she took a moment to admire his choice of clothing today. He wore a simple pair of black denim pants and a black collared shirt. As Gemma looked him up and down, he took advantage of the opportunity to do likewise. Gemma had chosen a turquoise dress with matching tights and shoes. It made her look even younger, but she still looked very beautiful. Data pulled her close for one more sweet kiss before guiding her to the dining table. During breakfast, Gemma told Data about her friend from the Academy and how Kaylith had the day off too. “I was hoping we could invite her to lunch so I could introduce her to you and Geordi. Would that be okay, Data?” “I am sure it will be. I will call Geordi and ask him and then you can call your friend to make the arrangements,” Data agreed. Both Geordi and Kaylith could make lunch, so Data and Gemma beamed down to the station once Data had checked in with the captain to make sure all was well on the bridge. “We’re fine up here, Number One. Enjoy your day off, I intend to while you mind the ship tomorrow,” the captain assured him. Gemma tugged Data away from the monitor once the screen went black. “Let’s go,” she urged him. Realizing he was wasting time, Data went. Deep Space Seven was unlike anything Gemma had ever seen before. It was even bigger than she had expected, filled with shops, restaurants and lounges as well as numerous entertainment facilities. The holosuites at the station were said to be almost as good as the ones on Deep Space Nine. Data and Gemma strolled through the shopping area, hand in hand, exploring several of the shops until it was time to meet Geordi and Kaylith. The couple was at the entrance of the restaurant they had agreed to meet at when a voice came from behind them. “Excuse me ma’am but are you authorized to be here?” Gemma laughed, to Data’s surprise, as she turned. “Kaylith! It’s so good to see you.” “Is it okay to hug a superior officer or are you going to write me up for insubordination,” Kaylith teased. “If you don’t shut up and hug me I will write you up,” Gemma shot back. The two friends embraced while sharing a laugh. “Lieutenant Kaylith Scott, I’d like you to meet Commander Data.” “I’m pleased to me you, Commander,” Kaylith smiled. “I am pleased to meet you too however, as we are off duty and you are a friend of Gemma’s, please call me Data. May I call you Kaylith?” “Yes, please do.” Just then Geordi rushed up to the group. “Sorry I’m late.” He looked from Data and Gemma to Kaylith, “I-I took a wrong turn and got turned around.” “Geordi, I’d like you to meet my roommate from the Academy. This is Lieutenant Kaylith Scott. Kaylith, may I present Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge.” “I’m pleased to meet you. Please call me Geordi” he said as he reached out to shake her hand. “And I’m Kaylith.” You did not need to be an empath to see the instant attraction felt by both Geordi and Kaylith. The foursome entered the restaurant and was seated at a table with a spectacular view of Deep Space Seven’s central plaza. As they talked, it was discovered how much Geordi and Kaylith had in common. Both had spent their childhood as Fleetbrats as their parents were career Starfleet officers. They were surprised to discover that Kaylith’s mother, Captain Tryla Scott had served briefly with Geordi’s mother aboard the USS Independence. They both shared an interest in swimming and skin-diving as well. However it was when Data had asked if they had decided what to order and both said fungilli at the same time they could not help but laugh. Data and Gemma were both so happy to see the connection being made between their friends. ~ Geordi deserves to meet someone special, ~ Data thought. There were many things to see around the station, and Kaylith was eager to show them to her friends, new and old. Data and Gemma were amused at how often Kaylith and Geordi would become involved in a discussion of some characteristic of the station, forgetting they were not alone. After this had happened for the fifth time, Gemma kissed both Geordi and Kaylith on the cheek and told them to have a nice afternoon. Stunned and pulled out of their latest discussion of the shield upgrades, Geordi and Kaylith turned to give Gemma a confused expression. Data laughed at the pair. “Do not let us interrupt your discussion. You were saying the field output was at ninety-eight percent due to...” Data said, reminding Kaylith where she had left off. He and Gemma walked away leaving the other pair to figure it out for themselves. “Can you sense them?” Data asked Gemma, as they headed towards the local bar for a drink. “Yes, they’re both embarrassed, but thankful. I can’t believe how well they got along from the first moment. They both were almost glowing all through lunch.” “Agreed, I have rarely seen Geordi this comfortable with a woman. He tends to get nervous and become unable to speak,” Data noted. Gemma grinned at him. “I never noticed that. He never had trouble talking to me.” Data pulled her closer and kissed her cheek tenderly. “You are not just any woman,” he assured her, and kissed her nose. Gemma giggled at him until something caught her attention. With her shields lowered to sense not only Geordi and Kaylith, but Data too, Gemma was also able to feel the emotional tone of most of the beings as they walked by her. Her mind was flooded with this being’s anger and jealousy. Gemma gasped at the strength of the emotional attack, or so it felt. She raised her shields, but the memory lingered and had already caused her to stop, shocked by what she had felt. While she did not want to know the source of these feelings, she found herself looking around despite herself. “Gemma, what is wrong?” Data was asking, almost in a panic. She realized he had asked her this question three times now. She pulled her attention to him and met his concerned eyes. “I-I’m not sure, but I think I just sensed someone thinking about me. The anger was so intense and the jealousy...” At her words, Data’s eyes went wide with shock and alarm. He pulled Gemma protectively closer as he scanned the area for anyone staring at Gemma with evil intent in their demeanor. “We should report this to the station security,” Data said, his voice suddenly commanding. “And tell them what? Someone had hateful thoughts about me? You can’t hold people for their feelings or thoughts,” she reminded him. “Hateful?” Data repeated. Somehow her saying it that way made him angrier than how she described it the last time. “We will go back to the ship in that case.” He began to pull her to the transporter area, but Gemma stopped him. “Let’s just go to the bar and I’ll keep my shields up. It was just a passing thought someone had and it just happened to reach me. Let’s forget about it.” Gemma pulled him back towards the bar. Data acquiesced, but watched every face they passed. Data found a table that not only had a nice view but was also strategically placed so he could keep an eye on the patrons. They ordered drinks and talked. Gemma did her best to steer the conversation back to Geordi and Kaylith but, even with her shields up, she could still sense how concerned Data was. Data reached for Gemma’s hand while they were at the table but it was more for protective reasons than romantic. “Data, please relax. We’re supposed to be having fun,” Gemma pleaded. “I am sorry, Gemma. I care so much for you. The idea that someone is having those thoughts about you disturbs me greatly.” He squeezed Gemma’s hand affectionately. “I will do everything in my power to ensure no harm ever befalls you.” “You are so wonderful, Data. Now, let’s go for a walk and explore the Promenade further,” she suggested. Data nodded his head and with Gemma’s hand still in his, they left the bar to enjoy the rest of their time on the station. The rest of the afternoon was uneventful. Data was thankful that Jenna had not attempted to join them. He noticed her staring down at them from the second level of the Promenade after they left the bar. He wondered whether the emotions Gemma had felt earlier had been Jenna’s. Gemma did occasionally lower her empathic shields but the powerful feelings she had sensed earlier did not return. She did however sense some powerful feelings of a different type when she and Data met up with Geordi and Kaylith. The four had dinner together in Kaylith’s quarters that evening. She served a wonderful dinner featuring foods from East Africa – Sambusa, Foon Sangaa Akhawii, mixed vegetables, red lentils, saffron rice, Biddeena and Chai. Data and Gemma gave Geordi a few moments to speak to Kaylith before they left to return to the Enterprise. “What are you two grinning at?” Geordi asked upon noticing the wide grins Data and Gemma kept giving him. “Geordi, I’m so glad you and Kaylith had so much fun today. She’s a wonderful woman and you’re such a great guy,” Gemma smiled. “Are you going to see each other again?” “Now what could’ve given you the idea that Kaylith and I would want to see each other again?” Geordi kidded. “Geordi, you are not answering the question,” Data pointed out. “Was it that obvious?” Geordi asked. “Geordi, it was,” Data informed his friend. “Yes, we are going to see each tomorrow. Are you happy?” “Yes, Geordi, and I know you are too,” Data teased. Gemma and Data were both pleased that Geordi found a way to see Kaylith for the next two days of the Enterprise’s layover. Once they had to leave, the two promised to keep in touch and, over the next month, Geordi talked often about his communications with Kaylith and was constantly asking Gemma questions about her. Gemma happily told him all that she could. Things continued to grow stronger between Gemma and Data. The next few missions the crew was assigned were rather routine, but still interesting. The calm allowed the couple to spend time together. There were poker nights, dinner and breakfast dates, long walks anywhere and everywhere. Gemma still insisted they spend time with other friends, and Data reluctantly agreed, but still pouted a bit. They had been dating for almost three months and the holodeck program of the shooting stars had become one of their favorites. They would sit as they had that first night, with Gemma between Data’s legs, keeping her warm, as they talked. This night, Gemma was telling Data about how a birth was traditionally handled on her world. Data just held her, enjoying the story, the feel of her and the sound of her voice. Her empathic abilities created a connection of sorts between them and now Data could better tell if she was happy or sad even if she was not in the room with him. While Data knew she could also sense him, what Gemma neglected to inform him was that she could also feel his emotions as he dreamed. She knew Data wanted to be intimate with her, but she had held back. Now it was time to tell him why and see where that led. Caressing the arms that encircled her, Gemma leaned back to kiss Data’s cheek. “There is something I need to tell you,” she whispered. Data pulled back so he could look her in the eyes. “Your tone indicates distress and I can also feel it from you. What is wrong?’ “Nothing’s wrong exactly. But I have two things I have been needing to tell you and I don’t think I can wait any longer.” Gemma shifted so she could look directly at him. She took a deep breath and plunged in. “I have never had sex before with anyone. I’ve had the opportunity, but I never wanted to before...before you. For my people it’s an act with meaning so it would be with you.” Data looked thunderstruck. He was nervous, but he could feel that some of her reactions to him now made more sense. He waited for her to finish, but impatiently. “That was the first thing, the other one is...bigger.” She took his face in her hands and looked deeply into his eyes. “I am in love with you, Data and I want to bond with you.” Data’s eyes grew wider still. He had read of and she had also spoken to him about this bonding, so Data knew it was a very serious step forward in their relationship that she was offering him. Her offer was pleasing but the words that had preceded it, made him near speechless. “You love me?” It was only half a question. She moved to sit on her feet and grinned at him. “You know I love you, Data. And I know you return the feelings. We already have half of a bond now, I want to complete it and be with you.” Data’s nervousness increased. “If you are not ready, I can-“ “Shhh, I am.” She touched his lips with a finger and them kissed him there instead. Getting to her feet, she held out her hands to him. Data stood, taking her hands in his. “I am nervous, though,” she admitted, shrugging. “So am I,” he told her. “But you are correct, I love you, Gemma.” Data leaned in to kiss her and was stunned to feel the connection between them open. Gemma took his hands and brought them to her temples and then she began to caress his face as she had in the past. Mimicking her movements, Data could feel more. She moved to kiss him and though he was worried, he let her feel the desire he tried to keep in control for so long. When Gemma deepened their kiss, Data was overcome by the entwining of their emotions. There was no way he could doubt her love for him, he could feel it, it pulled at him, enveloped him and invited him to drown in it. Gemma too was caught up in delving deeper in to Data’s feelings, not just regarding her, but how he felt about everything. There was so much to him she was sure she could lose herself in his emotional waves, but Data had moved one hand from her temple to her back, causing Gemma to be pulled back into the here and now. She could feel a hardness pressing into her, where none had been a moment before. She knew what it was, and it was exciting to think she had caused this reaction in the man she loved, but Gemma was still very uncertain about actually doing this. She decided another taste of home would help. Breaking their kiss, she smiled gently at Data. “Computer, save this program and close. Run program ‘Gemma/Data bonding’.” The scenery changed. It was no longer night, but there was still water. A small, sparkling waterfall with a gentle drop was just ahead of them. Gemma pulled Data to the water and facing him, took his hands. “This is where bondings take place in my family. I don’t think I can begin it, Data. Help me.” She sounded almost pleading and this worried Data, until she moved to kiss him. He worried their clothing would get wet, but realized it was too late for that. The water level only reached their ankles, and they were both barefoot, but worrying about their clothes was foolish now. Slowly, Data encouraged her to help him remove his shirt. She moved her hands to his waist and gently pulled his shirt out from the waistband of his pants. She lifted his shirt up to his chest before Data pulled it over his head, dropping it in the water. She slowly caressed his chest with her hands, marveling at the sensations this created. Data lifted her chin with his fingers, smiled and then kissed her tenderly. Data slowly caressed Gemma’s bare arms with his fingers, causing her to gasp. When his touch reached the straps of Gemma’s dress, he slowly nudged them off her shoulders. He leaned down to kiss her again before whispering in her ear. “Are you certain you are ready?” he asked. “Yes, Data, I am,” she smiled. He lowered the straps down her arms until her dress dropped in the water. “You are so beautiful.” Data ran his fingers along the trail of Gemma’s Tears of Howniya as he spoke. He was completely enthralled by the woman he loved. The softness of her skin, the allure of the tears, the look in her eyes as he touched her had a wonderful effect on the emotions that coursed through his system. He took her in his arms, kissing her slowly and tenderly at first. Soon the passion of their love took over as their kisses grew deeper and their tongues danced together. When their kiss broke, Gemma reached for Data’s waist. Her hands were shaking slightly from nerves as she undid Data’s pants. She pushed them down until they dropped in the water. Data stepped out of them as he reclaimed her mouth. He now pushed the straps of Gemma’s bra off her shoulder before undoing the clasp at the front. After her breasts were freed, Data swept his fingers along the top of her cleavage. Gemma’s breathing was becoming heavier as his hand lowered to her right breast. His fingertips traced the outline of the areola before gliding to her other breast to trace a similar route there. Gemma reached for Data’s face, pulling him closer to once again lay claim to his lips. Data’s hands slowly moved down Gemma’s sides until they reached the top of her panties. He pushed them down over her hips until they too dropped in the water below. Gemma now took Data’s hand and led him to the bottom of the waterfall. The waterfall itself was very unusual as it was very narrow at the top before gentle curves in the rock caused it to expand more and more as it dropped. There were small plateaus that seemed to form steps. From a distance the resemblance to a Tear of Howniya was unmistakable. As they stood on the bottom plateau, Gemma once again brought her hands to Data’s temples and caressed his face. Data, following her lead, raised his hands to her temples and began the gentle touches. Gemma guided Data to the next step where they repeated the soft stroking of each other’s faces. As they moved up each plateau, the depth of emotion each could feel from the other became more intense with each touch. When they reached the top of the waterfall, Data wrapped his arms around Gemma’s waist, pulling her closer as he brought his lips to hers. Gemma’s arms slid up Data’s chest before moving around his neck as their kiss continued. They slowly lowered themselves to their knees when they broke the kiss. Gemma now laid back in the water as Data moved beside her. He moved to kiss her again as his hand glided down her body, cupping her breast. Data guided his kisses down Gemma’s neck before continuing lower. He ran his tongue along the edge of her nipple as Gemma moaned in pleasure. He brought his mouth to her breast, licking, sucking, and teasing her nipple until it was hard. Gemma’s fingers stroked his hair as he then moved to her other breast to continue his feasting. When he reclaimed Gemma’s lips, he started to slide his hand lower down her body. Gemma spread her legs as Data’s gentle touch swept between them. He slid one finger, then two in and out of her vagina, starting to prepare her for the final act of the bonding. He then began to massage her clit with his thumb as he now thrust three, then four fingers into Gemma. When he was certain she was ready for him, he removed his fingers and positioned himself between her legs. “I love you, Gemma,” he whispered before slowly penetrating her with his erection. “I love you too, Data,” Gemma sighed as she wrapped her arms around Data’s back. Data’s rhythm was slow and gentle as he thrust in and out of Gemma. The motion caused waves to form in the warm water, which acted like a second set of hands caressing their bodies. Gemma's hands were roaming over Data’s back as they shared a deep kiss until Gemma pulled her mouth away to let out a breathy moan. Data quickened his pace slightly as he brought Gemma closer and closer to the precipice. Calling out Data’s name as her back arched, Gemma was completely overcome as her first orgasm rushed through her. As the emotions and sensations he was feeling became combined with Gemma's, Data experienced a climax stronger than he thought possible. Data gently kissed Gemma as he moved next to her. When he had withdrawn from her, the mixture of their sexual secretions came together with the water creating a wondrous effect. “Gemma, what has happened?” Data asked incredulously as the water below took on a luminescent glow. “Our bonding has been blessed by Howniya, Data,” Gemma smiled. “Or at least the holographic version of her. I hope one day you will come with me to Krios and...” She did not seem to be able to complete her sentence. “I would happily join you to repeat this anywhere and anytime you wish,” Data assured her. They both laughed, knowing just what he meant. “That was nice, very nice - wonderful. But now we need to have the computer create a drying unit, or we are never getting out of here.” Gemma reached up to push some of Data’s hair back into place, looking a little nervous again. Data kissed her and then moved to get to his feet, helping her to a stand as well. They ordered the program ended in order to find their clothing, and then went about getting them dry. It did take some time, and Data found himself wishing for more intimate time with Gemma. He came to her, taking her back into his arms. She looked up at him, knowing very well what he had on his mind. “We just did that,” she reminded him, giving him a look of disbelief. “Yes, I remember. I liked it and I want to do it again.” Data’s expression was near pleading. Gemma could feel his desire returning quickly. “Data, please, I can’t just yet. I-I want to get out of here and I hadn’t thought about the fact that it wouldn’t make you tired. I’m tired, Data.” She looked apologetic, but Data could also feel fear from her. “What do you fear?” he asked her, taking hold of her shoulders. “I’m just realizing what...as your bond mate, I have the responsibility to keep you emotionally happy and physically satisfied. Is that possible, Data? Since you don’t tire...” Gemma was very worried she had just gotten in over her head. Data took her face in his hands and smiled reassuringly at her. “As your bond mate, it is also my duty to keep you emotionally and physically content. If you wish to wait, then I can wait. You will inform me when you wish to make love again?” he asked, gently. She smiled, sighed and threw her arms around his waist. “Yes. I love you,” she squeezed him tightly, but Data pulled her away, with a sheepish grimace on his face. “We are still naked and your skin touching mine is very arousing. Perhaps we should try to avoid physical contact for the moment.” Data looked very embarrassed and Gemma could feel this, mixed with the desire he was trying desperately to combat. Chastising herself for her foolishness, she moved away. The computer informed them the drying process was complete only a moment later. They retrieved their clothing and dressed quickly. Data took her hand as they made their way to deck two and their respective quarters. Data had hoped she would join him in his, but she blushed and ducked into hers. Once he reached his own quarters, Data passed his mirror on the way to his shower and saw his reflection. His hair was a mess. Gemma had pushed his hair back earlier, but she had not done the best job. From his look and how she looked, Data realized it was obvious to any who had seen them, and there had been many, that they had been making love in the holodeck. The strange looks they had received as they passed others now made sense to him. Data sighed, but then laughed out loud. He did not care. He had not done anything unbecoming of an officer. He had made love to his bond mate. Smiling as he entered the shower, he hoped he got to repeat that act very soon. Data returned to Gemma’s quarters once he was presentable again to find her feeling at odds with herself. “Why are you distressed?” She looked sadly at him. “I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you. I need to know what your needs - physical needs - what are they?” Data came to her and pulled her into his arms. “I need you. I am capable of greater endurance than you, however...” Data sighed. He needed to speak clearly to her, but hoped he would not embarrass her. “Your assumption that I desire you is correct. I wish to make love again right now, but I can wait until you are also ready. I wish to bring you pleasure, not just receive it from you. There are many things we can share that will satisfy me and not tire you as much, if you wish to try. It is late and we both have a duty shift tomorrow.” Data kissed her on her forehead and then lifted her chin to kiss her sweet lips. After a moment, he could feel her body and mind relax into him. He used the bond to send her his feeling of love and tenderness. “I love you, Gemma. I will leave you to rest. Sleep well.” He kissed her again before pulling away. “I love you, Data. See you in the morning?” she called. “Sleep late, Gemma. You are tired and I can feel how much now.” With a parting smile, Data left her to sleep. Over the course of the next week, Gemma and Data were virtually inseparable while off duty. Their happiness seemed to be contagious as it surrounded everyone around them as well. Exactly one week after they had bonded, Data decided to surprise Gemma with a romantic dinner in his quarters. He prepared a special meal featuring a number of her favorite foods. He had even been able to obtain a bottle of real Kriosian wine. The table was beautifully set, including a small floral centerpiece with a Risan candle which, when lit, released the beautiful scent of a native flower, and soft music played in the background. Data lowered the lights to the perfect level and lit the candle before going to collect Gemma for this special evening. As Gemma entered Data’s quarters, she let out a quiet gasp as she took in the ambience Data had carefully created. Data led her to the table and pulled out her chair. He brought each dish to the table causing Gemma’s smile to broaden as she saw each was a favorite. However it was when Data produced the bottle of wine that Gemma once again gasped. “Data, how did you get a bottle of real Vorim wine?” she asked awestruck. “I know someone who knew someone who knew someone who was able to obtain it for me,” he grinned as he poured two glasses of the aqua colored wine. He raised his glass, “To our love and bond,” Data smiled. “To our love and bond,” Gemma repeated as they lightly clinked the glasses together. “This is a wonderful vintage,” she remarked after taking a sip of the wine. Not only was the wine wonderful, everything about dinner was wonderful. Their eyes seemed fixed on each other throughout as they talked, laughed and enjoyed each other’s company. When they finished, they took their wine glasses and adjourned to the sitting area. Data took Gemma’s glass from her hand and set it on the table next to his. “Dance with me,” he asked as he gently pulled her to her feet. He took her in his arms as they swayed to the music. As Data and Gemma became enveloped in the music, Data kissed Gemma tenderly on the lips. This kiss led to another and then another, each more passionate than the one before. It was then that Data pulled back looking concerned. “Gemma, what is wrong? I sense your uneasiness, your fear.” Data caressed her cheek as he spoke. “I don’t know what is wrong with me Data. I love you so much but...” “Gemma, do you regret our bonding?” he asked gently. Gemma could now sense fear from Data as he waited for her to answer. “No, Data, I don’t regret it. I-I don’t know why-” she stopped. “That’s not true, I do know why.” She paused again before continuing, “Data, I am still so scared that I will disappoint you. I really want to make love with you again but there is a part of me that is terrified-” Data placed his finger on Gemma’s lips, cutting off her words, “You could never disappoint me, Gemma. I love you.” Deciding it was time to show her since telling her for this last week had failed to do the trick, Data lifted her in his arms and carried her to his new bed. “Didn’t you use to have a smaller bed?” she asked as he gently placed her on the much fuller bed. “Yes, the first officer who was to take my place, when I was reported lost, was single and did not wish the fuller size bed. I saw no reason to replace it when I was reinstated.” Data tapped her nose with affection. “You gave me a reason to rethink that,” he admitted, grinning. He sat down next to her and just held her for a moment. “You ordered a new bed to make love to me...” Gemma seemed to be thinking out loud. “Yes, and because tonight I wish for you to stay with me, Gemma.” Gemma pulled back to look him in the face. “Stay? Data, I told you, I can’t-“ She swallowed the rest of her words when she felt something from him that caused her to believe she was thinking the wrong thing. “What do you mean by stay?” “To sleep. I wish to make love to you, yes, but I want you to stay here and sleep with me.” “You don’t sleep, Data,” Gemma reminded him. Data grinned again. “No, but I can shut down my cognitive functions and dream with you. Will it make you uncomfortable to be with me in this way?” he asked. Gemma imagined Data asleep. She imagined him holding her as she slept. Gemma leaned back into Data’s embrace. “It does sound nice, Data.” Data moved to kiss her. She tensed a bit as he lowered her back to his bed, but Gemma could feel their bond opening wide and his love for her wrap her up in warmth. Data brought a hand up and caressed Gemma’s temple, sending her soothing thoughts. Gemma wore a jumpsuit that fastened up the front, so Data reached up to open it by sliding his hand from her waist, up and over her breasts. She tensed just a bit, but he could also feel her own arousal begin. To keep her busy, Data brought her hands to his shirt. She took a moment to begin, but when Data kissed his way down to the newly opened top of her jumpsuit, Gemma sighed and bit back a moan. “Do you love me?” Data asked, softly. “You know I do,” she insisted, breathlessly. “Then do not hold back. If my touch moves you, I wish to know it.” He moved back to kiss his way down her cleavage and once he had pushed aside her bra, he took one of her nipples in his mouth, gently teasing it with his tongue. It seemed she could hold back no longer and let loose with a deep moan. She was gripping the sides of his shirt so tightly she ripped open two buttons in her attempt to reign in her emotions. Gemma gasped at what she had done but Data just laughed and took the shirt off. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “There is no need.” He grinned at her, fondly. “I love you, Gemma, and it is true that my desire for you overpowers me at times. It is good to see that I can bring it out in you as well.” He moved towards her breasts. “Allow me to do it again.” Gemma could not help but gasp as he took her nipple into his mouth once again. She reached for him and the fact she made contact with his bare skin delighted her, despite her fears. Data moved her further down the bed until they were comfortable, then he took control again. He gently pulled the suit from her body and softly instructed her to help him out of his pants. She still seemed like a frightened kitten and would not even look at him below his chest. Data decided his mate needed to see and allow herself to be seen. Her hand was on his chest, so he put his hand over hers and guided it down his body. Her eyes were locked with his, but she knew what was coming. “I am yours. Touch me.” His delicate plea had an affect on Gemma. She did not pull her hand away. Through their bond, she could feel Data’s excitement, but when her hand touched the tip of his erect penis, the level of excitement jumped tenfold. He could not help but moan. “Gemma,” he called out softly. Enthralled by the affect her touch had on him, she tentatively brought her free hand to his waist. Data rolled onto his back and studied his lover as she slowly moved to explore his body. It took her ten minutes before she was ready to touch his penis on her own, but it was worth every nanosecond of the wait. He could not feel hot or cold before the chip, but now Data felt hot desire burning through him. He moaned again, but longer this time. Gemma looked up to see him watching her, his expression almost looked as though he was in great pain, but she knew that was not so. “Should I be doing something? You said we could do things that are not so tiring.” “Yes,” Data gasped, she was still caressing his erection. “If you wrap your hands around me - my penis, as though you were creating a vagina with your hands and stroke gently up and down.” She was awkward at first, but he sat up and helped her and she was soon pumping his shaft with enthusiasm. His thrashing and moans excited her. But Data did now wish to cum this way. “Gemma, please, come to me. I wish to be inside you.” He removed her hand from his erection and pulled her down to kiss her. Moving her so she straddled him, he eased her down on his aching need, sighing heavily as she sheathed him with her sweet body. He assisted her in beginning a rhythm, but made sure he was positioned to bring her pleasure as well. It had been too long. Data had waited so long to be with her and having to wait again, he could not hold back. He came within her much sooner than he would have wished, but he did not let her stop until Gemma too cried out in climax. He pulled her into his arms and down beside him once the climax had washed over her, leaving her flushed and beautiful. “Are you tired?” he asked. “A little. I pleased you?” she asked. Data smiled and nodded. “Immensely. If you are not ready for sleep, I wish to give to you some of the pleasure you just gave me. Will you allow me to, Gemma?” he asked. She tensed slightly, but nodded. Moving her on her back, Data kissed her lips and then following a trail of tears, he kissed his way down her body until he was between her legs. She was nervous when he spread her legs apart to move between them, but when he touched his tongue to her clitoris, she arched her back and was quickly writhing in ecstasy. Data brought her to climax and enjoyed the sounds, feel and taste of her. He felt a great deal less hesitation from her when he pulled her back into his arms. “I am tired now,” she admitted, still breathless. “Then we will sleep now.” Gemma sat up, aghast. “I don’t have a nightgown on, I haven’t performed the eeltot, I have to brush my teeth,” she looked at him as though he was crazy. Data sighed and got out of bed. He replicated them both nightwear and joined her in getting ready for bed. It was a trial waiting, but she finally joined him again in his bed and let him hold her tightly as she drifted off to sleep. Data soon joined her in dreaming, happily sated.
Gemma awoke to the smiling face of her mate. “Good morning.” Data leaned down to kiss her. “I hope you slept well.” “Good morning. I slept very well” she replied. “I didn’t know it would feel so...so fulfilling to wake up in your arms.” Data held Gemma in his arms until it was time for her to return to her quarters to get ready for her shift. When Gemma entered her quarters she made her way to the bedroom to start getting ready. After a quick shower, she started to pull on her uniform. She sat on her bed for a moment to think. She smiled and said to herself ~ It’s the right thing to do. ~ Data stopped at her quarters so they could head to the bridge together. “Data, I would like to do something special for you. Will you come for dinner in my quarters tomorrow night?” “I would love to,” he smiled. “Do not forget we are having dinner with Geordi in the lounge tonight.” She nodded her head and then surprised him by kissing him as they rode in the turbolift to the bridge. The day was pretty typical except for some personnel transfers that had been processed and approved by Starfleet Command. Data was pleased he would have some good news for both Gemma and Geordi that evening. Data came to Gemma’s quarters at 1725 to collect her. It seemed like each time he saw her she looked more stunning than the last. She was dressed casually in a teal dress that followed the curves of her body stopping just above her knees. “You look so beautiful,” Data smiled before kissing her. “I have the feeling you would say that even if I was wearing a ranumea,” she grinned referring to the extremely shapeless, loose-fitting style of clothing from Hiragye IV. “And you would be correct,” he laughed. “Now, it is time to meet Geordi in the lounge.” They held hands as they made their way to join their friend. Geordi had already arrived when Data and Gemma entered. He waved to them as they approached. Geordi had been a little preoccupied lately. Kaylith had told him she had applied for a position that had opened up in the Enterprise’s Engineering section. Because of their personal relationships with Kaylith, both Geordi and Gemma had thought it best if they remove themselves from the process of choosing who would fill the position. Captain Picard had agreed. Data had made his recommendation to the captain after reviewing the applications but it was ultimately up to him to accept or reject Data’s recommendation. Picard trusted Data implicitly to make an unbiased decision on the matter so he accepted Data’s recommendation and had sought approval from Starfleet Command. Dinner was a wonderful diversion for Geordi. The banter and laughter of the evening was helping him relax. When they talked about how routine the day had been, Data casually mentioned that other than receiving Starfleet Command’s approval on various personnel transfers, including the position in Engineering, nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. Both Gemma and Geordi looked expectantly at Data. “Oh did you wish to know the status of-” Data asked trying to keep a straight face when Geordi interrupted him. “Data! Yes, I want to know!” Geordi exclaimed. Data did not have to say anything as his broad smile gave it away. “Kaylith got the position?” Gemma asked excitedly. “Yes. She will be transferred to the Enterprise in two weeks. I am very happy for you, Geordi.” “Thanks, Data. I know you didn’t let our personal relationship affect your decision, but thanks anyway.” Geordi spent the rest of the evening with a silly grin plastered on his face and both Gemma and Data could not be happier. The evening seemed to end too soon. Data was almost surprised when Gemma yawned and told the men she was retiring for the evening. Data offered to walk her back to her quarters, but she just kissed him and told him to do some man bonding. “Male bonding,” Geordi corrected, gently, but laughed too. Gemma just shrugged, came over to kiss him on the cheek and walked away from the table, leaving the men alone. “I still think it’s funny how you two started out not getting along at all,” Geordi commented. “I must admit to being responsible for that entire situation. It would seem that I not only miss the sensory input from people if they are gone, but I missed the input from my duties at ops.” Data shrugged helplessly at this. “I think I can understand that since every time I take a long leave, I dream of Engineering.” Geordi admitted, with a grin. “Yes! That is what happened to me!” Data exclaimed, excited that his friend understood. “I did not dream of Engineering, but I had the same experience.” Geordi just laughed. It did not go unconnected by the team from Maintenance that both Lieutenant Commander Corazon and Commander Data requisitioned bigger beds in the same week. The knowing expression that covered Ensign Seth’s face in addition to his emotions caused Gemma to blush crimson when he delivered it the following afternoon. The fact that Data appeared as the ensign was installing it made Gemma wish he would hurry, so she could crawl under the new bed and hide. “Did you decide you needed more room?” Data asked her, smirking. They both stood watching the ensign work and Gemma was wondering just why they were doing that. “Yes, I did. I-I’ve been tossing and turning a lot and I worried that I’d fall out of the old one,” Gemma said this with a straight face and then gave him a quick glare. “I see. Perhaps we should ask the ensign to install restraints as well.” Data was trying to look very innocent with this comment. “Data!” Even the ensign could not help but snicker now. “Do they make restraints strong enough for androids?” Gemma asked, with hands on her hips. “If they do, I have no intentions of telling you how to make them.” Gemma sighed, rolled her eyes and walked out of the room. Data’s eyebrow went up as he turned to follow her. “I was only teasing, Gemma. I would never-“ lips covering his stopped him from speaking further. Gemma wrapped her arms around Data’s waist and slowly slid her hands up his back. With one eyebrow raised, Data pulled her even closer and deepened their kiss. A sudden sound of coughing caused them to break their kiss and look in the direction of the noise. “I’m finished now,” Ensign Seth said as he stood at the opening to the bedroom. “Enjoy - I mean-” “Do not worry, Ensign, we know what you mean. I am certain Commander Corazon will sleep well in her new bed,” Data grinned as the embarrassed ensign made his way to the door. “Thank you, Ensign,” Gemma smiled as he left. She then turned back to face Data. “As for you, you’re early. I haven’t even started getting ready for dinner and you’ve seen the surprise I had for you,” she pouted. “You wanted your new bed to be a surprise for me?” he asked. “You’ve been so patient and understanding with me as I’ve struggled with my insecurities. I wanted you to know that they’re, well, under control. They may try to escape occasionally but I wanted to make sure you know how much I want to be with you.” “So you have not actually been tossing and turning in bed?” he asked. “You’re terrible,” she reproached as she swatted him on the chest as Data laughed. She started to pull out of his arms but he pulled her back in to kiss her again. Eventually, Data and Gemma sat down for dinner. It was not the elegant affair Gemma had originally planned but it was still wonderful. When dinner was finished, they adjourned to the sitting area and cuddled on the couch. “I am sorry I teased you earlier about the bed,” Data said in a hushed tone as he ran his fingers through Gemma’s hair. “You have no idea how sorry. I was going to ask you to stay with me tonight,” she sighed as she stroked Data’s free hand. “It’s getting a little late now, Data. I think I want to go to bed now.” Gemma rose from the couch, holding out her hand to Data. He sighed quietly as he accepted it, sure she was going to lead him to the door. When she started to lead him towards her bedroom instead, Data grinned. “Now who is terrible?” Gemma laughed and turned to face him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “If you wish to leave-” she started to say. Her words were cut off by Data’s kiss. Gemma let Data kiss her for a bit longer enjoying the emotional high he brought them both, before breaking their kiss and moving to a drawer. She pulled out a new pair of pajamas that looked to be just Data’s size. She handed them to him with a grin. “I’m going to get ready for bed in there.” She pointed to the bathroom. “You can get ready in here, okay?” Data nodded, but wondered why they had to do this separately. Deciding it was still linked to her insecurities, he put this aside for now and changed into the pajamas she had provided. Gemma took longer, but returned soon, in her own pajama set of rich green. “I was hoping you would join me in performing the eeltot tonight, my bond mate.” Gemma smiled at him warmly as she suggested this. “I would like that. I was tempted to ask you the night before, but I was uncertain. I did not wish to intrude.” Gemma touched Data’s temples, pulling his face closer, allowing her to kiss each one. “How could my mate be an intrusion? Come, I will show you the ritual. It’s very relaxing. It’s possible it will help you, even when you’re stressed about me holding out on you,” she teased. “I do not incur stress over our sexual encounters,” Data assured her. “No, just over the lack of their frequency. Don’t protest, Data. I know better.” She kissed him once and then pulled him to the alcove where she kept her eeltot candles and statuettes. Pulling the veil off the arrangement, she told Data which god was represented by what statuette. Gemma then knelt on the floor and motioned for Data to also kneel. She lit one of the glass globes filled with a lavender liquid that burned evenly. She handed the lighting stick to Data, so he could light the globe next to him. Gemma brought the statuettes down from the shelf and placed the one that represented masculinity in front of Data. “Do you not have a god of machinery?” he quipped, but she shook her head at him. “Machine or flesh, a male is a male and you, my mate, are male. There is no doubt of that.” She put the statuette that stood for femininity in front of her and then placed the god for peace and love between them. In front of them but also between she placed the god of friendship. “For Geordi and Kaylith,” she explained. “You do not use all the statuettes, only those that are appropriate at the time?” Data questioned. “Right,” Gemma blushed as she pulled out the god of romance. “I’ve been using him a lot lately. But I think he’s answered my prayers, so I’m letting him take care of someone else’s dreams now,” she grinned, sheepishly. She reached over to take Data’s hand and began the eeltot. She said a prayer of thanks for the many gifts she had been given that day, and that it was another day she was able to love Data, a blessing she would not have had had Q not intervened. It was startling for Data to realize that Gemma was thanking her gods for Q’s intervention. He did not mean any disrespect for any of the beings mentioned, but the notion was still difficult to fathom for Data. Still, much of what Gemma was thankful for was linked in some way to Data. He found himself watching her in fascination as she continued. She eventually grew quiet, and he could feel through their bond that she was calm and very relaxed. Not knowing if there was something he too should do, Data closed his eyes and thought of the things he was thankful for. Almost at once, a wonderful feeling of peace settled over Data as well. It was astonishing, since Data knew Gemma was not the source of this feeling. What seemed like only a second later, Gemma was pulling Data to his feet. He smiled blissfully at her. He helped her to blow out the candles and replace everything in its proper place before following her to the bedroom. He expected her to fall into bed and just close her eyes. Once they were lying on her new bed, Gemma smiled at Data as a wave of passion swept from her, through their bond, into him. Then she began to unbutton her top. Data sat up, “Gemma-” he started but his words were cut off as Gemma, now sitting up, crushed her lips to his as her passion grew. Data and Gemma were completely enveloped in a cocoon of emotion as their bond continued to intensify. Gemma unbuttoned the remaining buttons on her top, quickly removing it and throwing it to the floor. She now was working on Data’s pajamas top and soon it was on the floor as well. She wrapped her arms around Data’s neck, pulling him back down as their kiss continued. Data’s hand slid up the curves of her body, starting at her waist. As he cupped her firm breast in his hand, he could feel how hard her nipple was already. Data moved his kiss down Gemma’s neck until he reached her chest. He looked up, giving her a quick kiss on her sensuous mouth before moving his attention to her breast. He traced his tongue along her areola and then her nipple before taking her breast in his mouth. Gemma moaned as Data continued his oral manipulation. He now moved his attention to her other breast as her moans increased. He continued his downward movements, first running his tongue along the underside of her breasts, before following the trail of tears lower. When he reached her waist he pushed down her pajamas bottoms as Gemma raised her backside off the bed enough to assist in their removal. Once she was nude, Data resumed his downward explorations, as he kissed and licked his way down each of her legs to the tip of her toes. He massaged one foot and then the other as he sucked each of her sexy toes. Data pushed his own pajamas bottom off as he moved up between Gemma’s legs. He massaged her clit with his fingers before taking it in his mouth. As he licked and sucked her clit, his fingers were thrusting in and out of her wetness causing Gemma to moan and thrash on the bed until her orgasm exploded. Data now moved to reclaim Gemma’s lips in a passion filled kiss. Gemma, seeming to have lost all of her insecurities, maneuvered Data to his back. Now it was her turn to offer her mate the pleasure her mouth could bring. Her hands swept across Data’s chest before she lowered her mouth to his nipple, licking and teasing it with her tongue. As she moved lower she positioned herself between his legs. She stopped when she reached his erection but instead of nervousness, Data was sensing confidence radiating from Gemma. She lowered her mouth to engulf the head of Data’s penis causing a loud gasp to escape Data’s lips. She raised and lowered her mouth on his shaft as she firmly held it with her hand. She then pumped it with her hand as she kissed and tongued the head. Data’s moans were becoming louder as he felt a rush building up in his body. When Gemma looked up to quickly study the effects she was having on her mate, Data pulled her next to him bringing his lips to hers once again. He moved between her legs, penetrating her still dripping sex. His thrusts began slow but soon quickened as the fire that filled them both built to a molten level. Gemma’s back arched as she moaned his name loudly as his pleasure encompassed her body and soul. Data continued his thrusts bringing Gemma to orgasm again before calling out her name as he exploded within her. Data moved next to Gemma, wrapping his arms around her, kissing her temple. They lay silently basking in the moment. “Gemma, you were incredible. It would appear your self-doubts have left you,” Data said softly. “Something happened this evening, Data, when we did the eeltot together. The doubts disappeared and were replaced by knowledge and with the knowledge came confidence. I love you so much, Data.” “I love you too, Gemma,” Data whispered as Gemma fell asleep in his arms. The comfort level between Data and Gemma continued to rise as Geordi’s impatience also seemed to rise. The two weeks were taking forever, in his opinion, to pass. He and Kaylith talked each night, and Geordi was getting to know more and more about her, but that only made him long for her more. Data made Geordi join him and Gemma for dinner the night before Kaylith was due to arrive, so the engineer would get out of his quarters while he was off duty. Geordi protested, but Data threatened to make it an order or bodily carry his friend to Gemma’s quarters for dinner, so Geordi relented. It was good to be with friends, but he still felt all bottled up. The woman he wanted was not here to spend time with, and it was driving him crazy. When dessert was served, Geordi put his napkin on the table and got to his feet. “I’m sorry, guys. I just can’t do this. We’re due to arrive at Halon III in the morning and I’m just a nervous wreck. Everything was wonderful, Gemma. I’m going to try to get some sleep. See you tomorrow.” Geordi moved to give Gemma a quick kiss on the cheek and nodded at Data. Once he was gone, Gemma sighed. “He is a nervous wreck.” “I believe you are correct,” Data agreed. He finished his dessert and took up the plate. “I have a question for you now, though.” “Okay, I have an answer - yes.” Gemma grinned at him. “You know what I was going to ask?” “You want to know where you’re going to be tonight. Yes, I know. I want to be in your arms again tonight, Data. I sleep much better when you’re here with me, so I think I’ve finally fully adjusted. Will you perform the eeltot with me again tonight?” she asked, eagerly. “I would enjoy performing it with you once again. It is always a most intriguing experience,” Data noted, moving to take up her now empty plate. The couple moved to the bedroom to prepare for bed. The next afternoon, the transporter room was filled with tension, nervousness, and uncontrollable excitement, and that was just from Geordi. Data was manning the bridge, so only Gemma was with Geordi other than a few ensigns to help guide the other two new crewmembers to their new quarters. When the transporter chief informed his senior officers he had received the ready signal from Halon III, Gemma could feel the excitement in Geordi jump. When Kaylith finally formed on the pad, all the nervousness and tension faded, while the excitement jumped again. Gemma welcomed everyone and guided the two new ensigns to crewmen who would take them to their new homes. She then turned to Kaylith and hugged her warmly. Geordi seemed almost frozen in place. His hands were at his sides and he stood still as a statue. “I think I’ll leave you two alone for a minute. Come on, chief. We’re going to have a little break in the corridor.” Gemma motioned to the man who just grinned and followed. She looked back just as the doors were closing behind her to see Geordi pull Kaylith into his arms for a passionate kiss. It was a few minutes before Geordi and Kaylith emerged from the transporter room. “I’ll show you to your quarters, Kaylith, unless you two want to be alone,” Gemma kidded. “If only I didn’t have to get back to Engineering,” Geordi sighed. “I’ll see you later.” He kissed Kaylith on the cheek before heading for Engineering. “Kaylith, I’m so glad you’re here. You’re going to love it here, I promise,” Gemma declared. “How could I not love it. I’ve certainly got an advantage on other newcomers. I’ve already got friends here,” she smiled. “Friends? From what I saw before the doors to the transporter room closed, I think you and Geordi are a little more than friends,” Gemma teased. “He’s really incredible, Gemma. I’ve never met anyone like him,” Kaylith smiled broadly. “Geordi is a wonderful man. I’m so happy for both of you.” Gemma led Kaylith from the turbolift to her new quarters, which were located on deck four. “Very nice,” Kaylith said as she surveyed the rooms. “Not as nice as the senior officer’s quarters I’m sure but still very nice. Do you have to get back to the bridge or can you stay for a few minutes?” “If a few minutes for us really was a few minutes, I’d stay but I do need to get back to my station,” Gemma responded. “You settle in now. We’ll make plans for the four of us to have dinner together later in the week.” “You don’t want to join us tonight?” Kaylith asked. “I don’t need to lower my shield to know that you and Geordi would much rather spend this evening alone together,” Gemma laughed. “Tomorrow night is poker night. Data’s hosting and we’ll expect you and Geordi to be there at 1730 sharp.” “Okay,” Kaylith grinned. “Gemma, I don’t think I really thanked you for introducing Geordi and me.” Kaylith embraced Gemma warmly. “You are such a wonderful friend.” “You’re going to make me cry if you keep this up,” Gemma protested. “Looks like I’ve finally been able to repay you for all that you’ve done for me. I don’t know if I would have made it through the Academy if you hadn’t help me acclimatize to Earth like you did.” Gemma returned to the bridge a few minutes later. As the turbolift door closed behind her, she could hear Data acknowledging a communication over his comm badge from Captain Picard. He turned to Gemma and smiled. “Commander Corazon, you have the bridge,” Data instructed as he headed to the turbolift. “Aye, sir,” Gemma acknowledged. She sat down in the captain’s chair. ~ Comfortable chair, ~ she thought. The next morning, Geordi had breakfast with Data in the first officer’s quarters. The two friends were discussing the wonderful reunion Geordi had enjoyed with Kaylith last evening and how they both hoped Gemma and Data would join them for dinner the next day. “I am sure Gemma will agree. I will ask her once I get to the bridge,” Data said and took a bite of the breakfast Geordi had replicated for them. Geordi grinned at his friend. “So you have to get her permission to come now, Data? What if Gemma doesn’t want to come?” he teased. Data looked confused. “Do you know of plans she may have of which I am unaware?” he inquired. Geordi laughed at his friend’s confusion. “I just meant that you two are almost never apart anymore. I’m not complaining, I still get to see you-” Geordi looked embarrassed. “I’m not sure what I’m driving at, but I was also thinking that if it hadn’t been for Q, you would never have finally gotten that long overdue third full pip, and you would never have met and gotten so close to Gemma.” Data smiled and put down his fork, the food was not as interesting as the topic of conversation. “I agree Starfleet Command has seemed hesitant to promote me. I was pleased to have reached this rank. As for Gemma, we are more than close. I love her, and we have performed a bonding ritual that in her culture is more than-“ Data’s explanation was cut off when both men heard a crash coming from Data’s bedroom. “That has to be that wild cat you call a pet,” Geordi said with a sigh as the two got to their feet and headed towards the location of the sound. “Spot is a good pet, but she can be troublesome.” The door to Data’s bedroom opened and Data ordered the computer to raise the lights. Geordi noticed two things once they came up. Data’s bed was bigger and there were a bunch of little figurines that had been knocked over on the android’s bedside table. “Spot,” Data admonished his pet with irritation. The cat raced from the room and Data moved to put the disturbed objects back in order. “Data, why did you get a bigger bed?” Geordi asked, staring at the object in question. Data did dream for a few hours at times, but he did not toss and turn and never even took his uniform off to “sleep” so this larger bed confused the chief engineer. Data looked over at his friend to give him a disbelieving look and Geordi almost gasped with his embarrassment. “Oh, God! Data, I can’t believe I just asked that. I-I’m a little more distracted than I thought, I guess.” He laughed and shook his head at his own foolishness. Data just smiled and went back to his task. “I am just relieved you did not force me to answer that question.” “Data, what are those things?” Geordi asked, coming closer to his friend. Data explained about Gemma’s nightly religious ritual and how he had replicated this set to surprise her. Data also added that he intended to purchase an authentic elltot prayer collection as soon as possible. Geordi looked from the statuettes to the bed and then back to Data. “She’s not seen this yet?” he asked. “No, not yet.” Data answered. He had just finished his task and came back to a stand, looking at the set. He hoped Gemma would be pleased when she saw it. “Does she know about the bed, Data?” Geordi asked, hesitantly. Data turned to look at his friend. “Yes, she has slept in it.” “The two of you are intimate?” Geordi whispered. “As I was saying, Gemma and I have performed a bonding ritual, which must occur before a formal commitment can be made,” Data responded quietly. “Geordi, why are we whispering?” Geordi cleared his throat before answering, “I didn’t realize you two were that serious, Data. This formal commitment, are you thinking about asking her to marry you?” “I love her very much. I would be lying if I said I had not given the subject of marriage thought, however I am taking things slowly. I do not wish to rush Gemma in to something she may not be ready for.” “Data, you’ve become really immersed in Kriosian culture, haven’t you?” Geordi motioned towards the figurines as he spoke. “Gemma has taught me much about her beliefs, her way of life. I find it to be very fascinating and comfortable. It is difficult to explain as I am not sure I fully understand myself. I have performed the eeltot with Gemma and find it to be a most enlightening experience. It is-” “Picard to Commander Data. Report to my ready room immediately,” the voice on the comm badge stated. “I am on my way, sir,” Data acknowledged. Data turned to his friend, “Excuse me, Geordi. I must leave now.” “We’ll see you and Gemma tonight,” Geordi smiled as Data rushed to the turbolift. When Data entered the ready room, the captain’s view screen was lowering as Picard turned to face his first officer. “Please sit, Number One,” Picard started. “The Enterprise has been ordered to rendezvous with the Titan. Admiral Nechayev has been called away from the talks with the Romulans. Starfleet Command wants me to join the negotiating team during her absence.” Picard then handed a PADD to Data before continuing. “After the rendezvous, the Enterprise has been assigned to patrol an area adjacent to the neutral zone. Romulan intelligence reports have indicated a small group of Remans may attempt to disrupt the talks by attacking Federation outposts along the neutral zone. Hopefully the mere presence of the Enterprise will act as sufficient deterrence. Any questions?” “How long is the admiral expected to be away, sir?” “The Enterprise will be yours for approximately ten days, possibly longer.” Data promised to keep the Enterprise in the same condition in which the captain left it, but in the days that followed, some thought he was trying too hard. Data missed hosting poker night. For dinner with Kaylith and Geordi, Gemma was the only one to join them. Data asked Gemma to feed and check on Spot after her shift the following day, but he refused to leave the bridge to accompany her. Gemma was encouraged to stay the night in Data’s quarters to keep Spot happy and Gemma agreed. She was greeted well by the cat, but Gemma did not like being in his quarters without Data. After a lonely dinner, Gemma made her way to Data’s bedroom, discovering the eeltot prayer set. She was deeply touched he had taken the time to have this here for her, but it made Gemma miss Data all the more. Five days after the captain had left the Enterprise, Data still had not left the bridge and even the counselor was becoming concerned. The Remans had given the Enterprise some minor trouble, but the ships they had were nothing when compared to the destroyed Scimitar. Counselor Faalox made her way to the captain’s ready room. The Danobulan gave the second officer a wink and Gemma gave her a hopeful smile. Ten minutes later the counselor left the ready room with a profound look of discouragement on her face. “I don’t know if you have any tricks to pull out of your sleeve, Gemma, but if you do, try them,” Faalox said with a defeated sigh. “Commander Data won’t be pried off this level with a crowbar.” Gemma waited until just before her shift was over and Data was again in the ready room before she approached him. He was looking over reports of all the sector activity for the last twelve hours. Having compiled that report, Gemma knew the information he had listed everything down to the shift changes of bridge crews on even freighters that passed through this area. Data put the report down to give her his attention. “How can I help you, Commander Corazon?” Data asked, formally. Gemma sighed, took a seat in the chair on the other side of the desk and studied the face that she had not kissed in almost a week. “Have dinner with me,” she said simply. Data looked shocked. “I assume you mean in your quarters. My presence is required here, Commander. I cannot abandon my duty in favor of personal desires,” he told her, firmly, but gently. “Don’t you miss me?” she asked, in a pleading tone. Data got to his feet and came to Gemma’s side. He took her hand and pulled her to her feet. He caressed her cheek with a finger and smiled, with a misty expression entering his eyes. “I see you each day, but I know you are referring to spending time alone with you. Yes, Gemma. I miss our time together, but I cannot shirk my duty to the ship and its crew. Will you wait for me?” he asked her. Gemma looked at her feet, feeling like a heel. Returning her gaze to his beautiful eyes, she nodded. “I’d wait a lifetime for you, Data. But I still don’t think this is what the captain expected you to do in his absence. Have dinner with me and hold me, please?” Before Data could answer, Gemma reached up, grabbed his face and kissed him with great passion. The days apart began to melt as their kiss deepened. Data wrapped his arms around Gemma, holding her tightly. “Please, Data, have dinner with me. Captain Picard doesn’t spend twenty-four hours a day on the bridge and he wouldn’t expect you to either.” “What if I am needed?” Data protested. “They will contact you if you are needed on the bridge. Please, Data,” Gemma pleaded. The look on her face completely broke Data’s resistance. He smiled and walked out of the ready room to the bridge. Gemma sighed and followed Data as she was certain he was going to take his seat on the bridge. “Mr. Worf, you have the bridge,” Data ordered. He turned to Gemma and smiled, “I have a dinner date.” “Thank you, Data,” she mouthed silently before turning towards the turbolift. Once the door closed, Gemma wrapped her arms around Data’s waist, holding him tightly as if to make sure he could not go back to the bridge. When they reached deck two, Gemma took Data’s hand as they walked to his quarters. As they entered Spot took one look at her absentee owner and ran to another room. “I have been thinking of taking some shore leave upon the return of Captain Picard. I would very much like it if you would accompany me,” Data mentioned casually as he replicated dinner for Spot and placed it on the floor for his finicky feline. “Shore leave sounds wonderful. Where did you want to go?” Gemma asked. “Krios,” he grinned. “Someone I love very much is from that planet. I would like to visit to learn even more about her and hopefully meet her family as well.” Gemma threw her arms around Data’s neck, “Data, I’d love to go to Krios with you.” She then kissed him with great vigor. “I know you’ll love it there.” “I know I will too. How could I not love the planet which produced such a special woman as Kamala,” Data teased, “...and you too, of course.” Adding his final words still did not save him from a playful swat on the arm from Gemma though. “Let’s have dinner before I change my mind about this,” Gemma teased back. Data replicated a wonderful dinner complete with wine, romantic table setting and candles. “I am glad you convinced me to leave the bridge,” Data smiled as he reached across the table to squeeze Gemma’s hand. When the meal was finished, Data helped Gemma from her chair and pulled her into his arms for a passionate kiss. “I’ve missed you so much, Data,” Gemma whispered when their kiss broke. “I have missed you too.” He kissed her deeply once again. “I believe it is time to perform the eeltot and then go to bed,” Data informed her. “Data, it’s only 1930 hours,” Gemma laughed. “It is much later than I thought,” he grinned as he took her hand to lead her to the special area set aside to perform the eeltot. Gemma was delighted she was finally able to use this prayer set with Data instead of using it alone. This night, all she could think to pray about was her thankfulness for having found Data and for having finally managed to convince him to leave the bridge. Data made a noise that resembled displeasure, but Gemma just added that it had taken divine intervention to return her bond mate to her and she was eternally grateful. Data just sighed. Once Gemma was silent, Data said his own prayers of thanksgiving for Gemma and asked for protection for the Enterprise and for her captain’s safe return. Once he finished his prayer and closed his eyes, the wave of peacefulness wove a web of calm over him, but this time Data could feel a stirring between himself and Gemma. As he opened his eyes to look at her, Data saw Gemma open hers to look back at him. The same flame he felt ignite within him, burned in her eyes. Just making it to the bed, Data pulled Gemma into his arms and had a great deal of trouble not ripping her uniform from her body, his need was suddenly so great. When he heard the fabric of his own uniform being torn from his body by his passion filled bond mate, he threw hesitation out of his mind and tore her remaining coverings instantly from her body. Data crawled over Gemma, touching and tasting every inch he could reach as she struggled to have the same access to him. His frenzy to unite with her was so great that Data blindly roamed her body until he found her vagina and penetrated her with two fingers. Gemma was already very wet and this only served to heighten his arousal. Data added two more fingers and moved them in and out, collecting some of her nectar. Drawing his fingers out of her, he brought them to his lips, claiming her juices as Gemma opened her eyes to watch, enthralled. She grabbed his face, kissing him savagely and tasting herself on Data’s lips. He took hold of her hips and, plunging into her, wished he could have savored her sweet juices more, but he was simply unable to wait another second before burying himself as deeply inside her as was possible. Data was thrilled by how quickly he brought Gemma to climax and surprised at how quickly he followed her, but what stunned him was how little satisfaction he gained from this orgasm. Gemma too seemed to only want to go again the instant their breathing was slow enough to speak again. Something was wrong. They made passionate love twice more before Data could convince himself to question Gemma, while holding off her sexual advances, but his resolve was quite low. All Gemma was able to say was, “Ver’meta – like a mating fever,” before she reclaimed his mouth again. Tearing his lips from hers, Data asked, “What is the cause?” He could not help but roam her body with his hands and kiss her sensuous neck as he waited for her answer. “Successful bonding. The acceptance of the gods and complete devotion to the union between the bonded pair,” Gemma gasped, returning to her attempt to get Data to again enter her. “What will stop it?” Data asked, his voice muffled by the breast in his mouth. “Conception or exhaustion.” “Conception?” Data said after removing Gemma’s breast from his mouth. “Gemma, you do know I am unable to father a biological child?” “Yes, Data, I assumed as much,” she panted as she grabbed his face to kiss him again. “We have to continue until I can’t.” Data was surprised by the strength being exhibited by Gemma. She pulled him desperately in to position so he once again could penetrate her although Data did not put up any struggle. He needed to be in her as much as she wanted him there. He pounded in and out of her still dripping vagina as Gemma called out for more. He reclaimed her mouth, their tongues doing battle as the tides of passion rose within them. Soon Gemma was crying out in pleasure. “Keep going, Data, please,” she begged. Data complied, soon bringing her to orgasm again and again before the passion within him exploded. But he still did not stop, he continued thrusting in and out, harder, deeper, pushing Gemma over the edge of ecstasy as many times as he could until she finally collapsed from exhaustion. Data slid next to his lover, wrapping his arms around her as she slept. The peaceful look on her face belied the rawness of the evening’s lovemaking. Data watched Gemma sleep as he accessed all the information he had on Ver’meta. What he learned both pleased and dismayed him. The fact they were experiencing this phenomenon meant their bond was only breakable by death. Having this knowledge was a great comfort to Data. What caused his dismay was their apparent missing of an important step in the relationship “rules”. The gods may have blessed their bond but Gemma’s parents had not. Data was unsure how this would affect his relationship with Gemma. When Captain Picard returned to the Enterprise six days later he expressed his pleasure with his first officer’s performance during his absence but then he always had the utmost confidence in Data’s abilities. “You’ll make a fine captain one day, Mr. Data,” Picard offered after Data completed his report on the happenings over the past eleven days. “Thank you, sir.” Data paused for a moment, “Sir, I wish to submit a request for seven days shore leave for myself and Commander Corazon.” “You both certainly deserve some time off. When do you wish to take the leave?” Picard asked. “When convenient for you, sir, since you have just returned-” Data began. “Data, tomorrow is convenient for me, if it is for you and Commander Corazon,” Picard interrupted. “It is, sir. Thank you,” Data smiled. “Now tell me, where are you and Gemma going for your leave.” “We are going to Krios. I wish to obtain her parents’ blessing of our relationship. I am nervous though, sir.” “Nervous? Why, Data?” “If Gemma’s parents do not approve of me, we must cease our relationship.” “I don’t think you have anything to worry about, Data. You are one of the best officers I have had the privilege of serving with and, more importantly, one of the finest individuals I have had the honor of knowing. I am proud to consider you a friend and a member of my family.” “Thank you, Captain. I owe much of who I am today to you and the guidance you have provided me over the years.” Gemma was still bubbling over with excitement the next day as she and Data set out for Krios in a Type-9 shuttlecraft. At warp five, it would take only thirteen hours to reach Krios. Gemma’s parents were expecting them and looked forward to meeting this Commander Data that Gemma had told them about. She mentioned him often in her communications however it would be two things she had not told them that would prove to be a problem. The Corazons did not know about their bonding ceremony nor did they know that Data was an android. Gemma had not mentioned the bonding ceremony on purpose. Her parents had always instructed her to get their approval before she chose a mate to bond with and she had not. As for Data being an android, Gemma had not thought to tell them. To her, Data was a man and, more to the point, the man she loved more than anything in the universe. The Ver’meta took Gemma over once they had been away from the Enterprise only forty-five minutes. Data believed it to be caused by their close quarters and the pull of duty not being applicable. They had been staying in other’s company or they stayed away from each other so this had not replayed since their initial time, but there was no stopping it now. Gemma moved to touch Data’s cheek. “Your skin is so soft, Data. I find it impossible to resist touching you,” she told him, her voice a purr. Sensing through their bond what Gemma was feeling, Data made the last logical choice he would be able to for a while. “Computer,” he commanded, “engage automatic helm control.” Coming to a stand, Data took Gemma in his arms and kissed her. Without breaking the kiss, he lifted her and carried her to one of the small cabins. He did not leave her for several hours. Gemma was sleeping soundly when Data returned to the pilot’s chair to send a brief message to her family saying they would be arriving on time. He was relieved he remembered to brush his hair before sending the recorded message. Thinking about what had caused his hair to be out of place sent a wave of desire to race through Data. His superior hearing and the bond with his mate afforded Data with the knowledge that Gemma would wake if he did not suppress these musings. Pushing aside the temptation to have her back in his arms, Data focused on composing his message to his mate’s family. “Shuttle Janova to Krios communications. Please forward the following message to the residence of Plaree and Yedray Corazon. Greetings, the shuttle bearing Commander Data and Lieutenant Commander Corazon will arrive on schedule. Will rendezvous with you at 1530 in south quadrant of Central Square. Looking forward to a joyous meeting, message ends. Janova out.” Satisfied that his message would be well received, Data relaxed and studied some of the latest Kriosian musical selections he had been given by his mate. Once Gemma awoke, it was very difficult to keep their hands off each other, but remembering that her parents would not be pleased if they were detained because of the insatiability of their daughter and her bond mate, they managed. To insure they maintained an air of restraint, Gemma led the way and Data followed several paces behind her. He hung back for a minute as Gemma ran to embrace her mother and then her father. A second male received a hug that was not as warm and Data assumed this was her brother by her reaction, coupled with the fact he was younger than the other male. “So where is your Commander Data, Gemma? We received a message from your rather unusual looking pilot that you would be arriving on time. He didn’t feel the gods’ fear and remain behind, did he?” Gemma’s father asked, teasingly. “The pilot?” Gemma repeated, confused. “Yes, my daughter. Didn’t you know your pilot-” Her father’s words stopped suddenly as his gaze fixed on the being now coming up behind her. Gemma turned to Data, extending her hand towards him. He smiled at Gemma lovingly, taking her hand in his. “Mother, father, I would like you to meet Commander Data. Data, this is my father, Plaree and my mother, Yedray.” Gemma looked over at her brother and sighed. “And this is my brother, Thierry.” “I am very pleased to meet you all. Gemma has told me much about you.” Data reached out to shake Plaree’s hand but the elder Corazon just stared at Data. “Gemma has told us about you as well, although it would appear she has left out some important details.” Plaree was still giving Data the once-over as his wife and son stood by silently. “I’ve never seen anyone like you before, Commander. What species are you?” “I am an android,” Data informed him. “What?” The shock of this news was obvious on the faces of the three Corazons. Data turned to Gemma, puzzled, “You did not inform your family of this fact?” “I-I never thought to say anything. I told them you’re the man I love. Your being an android didn’t seem important,” she explained. “Not important!” her father injected. “He is an android, Gemma. How, in the name of Howniya, could you possibly think that his being a machine wasn’t important?” “I have told you about many people in my life who are not Kriosian and you have accepted them without knowing what species they are.” “This is different, Gemma, and you know it,” her mother finally spoke. “You have brought home this android to meet us, to get our approval for you to bond.” Yedray looked to Data, “Are you capable of fathering children, Commander?” “No, ma’am, I am not.” “Did you know this, Gemma?” Yedray quizzed. “Yes, mother, Data and I discussed this some time ago.” “Gemma, walk ahead with your mother. Thierry and I need to talk privately with the commander,” her father instructed. Gemma stared at her father disbelievingly but did not move. “Now, Gemma!” His voice was more forceful than Gemma had ever heard. Her mother grabbed her hand, pulling her down the street as Gemma looked back helplessly at Data. “Sir, I understand my being an android has come as a shock to you. I will do whatever is necessary to alleviate any fears you have regarding my relationship with Gemma.” Data was doing his best to stay calm. He could feel Gemma’s fear and was trying to send her peaceful thoughts. “Commander, I suggest you get back in your shuttle and return to your ship. My wife and I will not give our approval for you to bond with our daughter.” Father and son Corazon then turned away from Data to begin their walk home. “Sir, please. I love your daughter very much.” Data could not stop the panic that overtook him. ~ I cannot lose Gemma. I love her too much. I must find some way to gain her parents’ approval. ~ After the Corazons were out of sight, Data returned to the shuttle, heading to the back as soon as he entered. He sat on the edge of the bed that still showed the signs of the passion he and Gemma had shared. He could smell Gemma’s scent all around him. He laid down on the bed, clutching the pillow she had been resting on earlier, to draw in more of that wonderful scent. Gemma was entering her parents’ home with her mother as Data’s panic started. She watched the door, waiting for him to arrive with her father and brother. When the two men entered, Gemma felt overcome with emotion. “Where’s Data?” she whispered. “I have told Commander Data to return to his ship without you,” Plaree informed her angrily. “Gemma, what were you thinking? An android! I know many fine men who would be honored to bond with you.” “Data is the finest man I’ve ever met,” she replied through her tears. “You didn’t even give him a chance. I know no man could ever love me as much as Data does.” “He is a machine! How do you know he loves you at all?” Yedray questioned. Gemma tried to answer but her sobbing left her unable to speak. She ran to her old bedroom, collapsed on her bed and cried. Data was startled out of his thoughts when the shuttle’s computer informed him of an incoming transmission from the Enterprise. He turned on the view screen and was greeted by Captain Picard. “My apologies for interrupting your shore leave-” Picard stopped abruptly, shocked by the appearance of his first officer. “Data, has something happened to Gemma?” “Her parents do not approve of me, Captain. I do not know what to do.” Data took only a moment to relate every detail of his brief meeting with Gemma’s family. Despite his shock, Picard put his personal feelings aside to help his friend. “Data, from what I understand of Kriosian bondings is that once they form, they cannot be easily broken. I remember mention of an ancient ritual that Kriosians use to undergo to ensure that their bonding was successful.” Data’s eyes began to move in the characteristic fashion that indicated he was processing information. “Yes!” he exclaimed. “You are correct, Captain. It is called Meta’lema. Its use was to verify all bondings, although now its only use is to settle disputes similar to mine.” Data pulled his inward focus back to the captain and gave him a joyful smile. “That is the answer, sir. I will challenge her family for the right to her hand and use this ritual to prove the validity of my claim.” “Precisely,” agreed the captain. “I wish you success, Data. I hate to ask you this now, but could you do me a favor while you’re there?” Picard asked. When Data agreed, the captain made his personal request and signed off after wishing his first officer well. Accessing the Kriosian informational database, Data began to research the necessary requirements to accomplish his goal. He found and contacted an Amado, or Kriosian cleric, named Teyo Gildas who was willing to perform the rite, should Gemma’s family refute Data’s claim to being her bond mate. Amado Gildas expressed surprise upon hearing that anyone would doubt such a claim, until Data admitted there had not been time for him to tell the Corazons that he and Gemma were bond mates. Since Data could still feel the influence of the Ver’meta, he questioned the Amado on this issue as well. “If, as you say, you are not able to impregnate your mate, then you and she must see to this at once, Commander. The remedy for this condition is simple. I can release you both from its affects in just a few minutes, but separation of a bonded partner at this time can quickly prove to be fatal. You must act today to safeguard both of your lives.” After receiving a blessing from the Amado, Data moved quickly along the streets until he reached the Corazon home. He rang for admittance, rehearsing what he was going to say to Gemma’s parents as he waited. When the door opened, the angry face of Plaree Corazon was confronting Data. “I told you to leave, Commander. We will never allow our daughter to bond with you.” Plaree was almost shouting the words at Data. “That is why I am here, sir. I have spoken with Amado Teyo Gildas and have requested he perform the Meta’lema. Gemma and I are already bond mates.” “What? Gemma would never bond without first receiving the blessing of her mother and I.” “That is why she did not inform you. Gemma did not wish to anger you.” “I don’t believe you. Even if you have been intimate with my daughter, I do not believe you are capable of a bonding.” “Sir, Gemma and I have bonded. We love...we...love” Data suddenly closed his eyes tightly, his head tilting to the side. His expression was one of great pain. “What’s the matter with you? Are you malfunctioning or something?” “Gemma!” Data ran past the startled man, his bond directing him to Gemma’s bedroom. “Stop where you are! Stay away from her, android.” “Gemma, open the door!” Data called. There was no response from behind the sealed door. “You see, she doesn’t want to see you.” “Gemma, please answer me!” Data pleaded, growing more and more concerned with the silence from the bedroom. Knowing something was terribly wrong, Data used his strength to pry open the doors as Plaree and Yedray shouted at him to stop. Seeing Gemma’s still form on the bed, Data rushed to her side. “Data,” Gemma smiled weakly. “Have you come to say good-bye before you leave?” “No, Gemma. I will not leave without you.” “They will not change their minds, Data. I can’t live without you. I don’t want to live without you,” Gemma whispered faintly. Data could feel the life draining slowly from Gemma. He took her in his arms and turned to face her parents. As he did, Gemma’s condition became apparent to her father and mother. They looked on in horror as their now-fragile daughter clung to Data. “We must see Amado Gildas immediately. Gemma and I entered Ver’meta seven days ago. We must go now!” As though in a trance, Gemma’s family led the way to the shuttlecar and helped Data get Gemma into a seat. Being in close contact, the Ver’meta began to affect the pair. This disturbed him, but when Gemma responded with rising strength to his kiss, Data sighed. The group entered the temple with Data in the lead, carrying Gemma in his arms. They came upon Amado Gildas speaking with a young woman, but seeing Data, he excused himself. “Come, bring her out to the garden,” Gildas urged him, doing his best to quickly lead the way for the more agile android. The temple interior felt old and dusty, but the garden was fresh and beautiful. The area was domed for temperature control year-round. Flowering vines and bushes encircled it, but the eye was drawn to the large stone statue that dominated the space. Three times the size of the people who stood under her towering frame, the female figure radiated power. She stood tall, with her arms raised skyward, holding an ocean blue crystal between her hands. The area below her had been carved out to form a small stone pool, containing a bath of water. “She is Sheel, the goddess of union. All the gods bless a bond through Sheel. Into the bath, Data. You must kneel together in the bath,” Gildas instructed. Gently, Data helped Gemma kneel in the water. Once she was settled, he knelt down in front of her, holding her hands to steady her. Amado Gildas retrieved a staff as Gemma’s family took a seat on one of the surrounding benches. Gildas raised the staff to the crystal held by the goddess. He removed the crystal, lowering it until it was within Data’s reach. “Take the stone, my son. You and Gemma must hold it between you.” Data could feel the power of the crystal with his first touch. Gemma lifted her hands to make contact, in kind. The affect their touch had on the stone was astonishing. The crystal felt warm to the touch and touching it warmed Data. Gemma closed her eyes and smiled. It obviously influenced her as well. In seconds, the dome began to rain, but the water was warm. Looking to the side, Data observed dozens of smoke-like tendrils emanating from his back and curving over his body, slowly moving upwards. Stunned, Data looked at his mate, to discover tendrils were also emanating from her. Gemma’s tendrils were red in color and Data’s were blue, and as they flowed higher, seeming to rush towards each other, the blue and red tendrils crashed together, swirling as one. The purple of their combined tendrils shot straight up, beaming an intense light between the hands of the goddess and onward. The rain that fell gently on the garden, bathed it in the warm purple light. Gemma’s family gasped from their bench, but Amado Gildas just smiled proudly. “I have not seen this strong a display in many years, my children. Your bond is truly strong and well blessed. I regret forcing you to undergo the Meta’lema, but it was necessary before I could perform the Dow’kitar, to resolve your Ver’meta.” The elderly man came closer, placing a hand atop Data’s head and then Gemma’s. He whispered a prayer, causing the crystal to flash blue three times before it resumed its intense purple glow. Data opened his eyes to witness the crystal spontaneously rising until it again rested in the hands of the goddess. The rain ceased, but as Data looked at her face, what appeared to be tears streamed gently from Sheel’s eyes and down her stone face. The android turned a questioning face to the amado. “Tears of joy, my son. The goddess rejoices in the bonding of her beloved children,” the man explained with a patient smile. He beckoned the mates out of the bath. Data was overcome with relief to find Gemma’s strength had returned. She pulled Data in a strong and tender embrace, kissing him with feeling. The happy pair got to their feet as Data looked to the amado for more answers. “Amado Gildas, can you tell me what the blue and red lights signified?” The priest smiled. “Of course, my child. The blue color signifies male, the red is female and the tendrils themselves show the wishes of the soul with regard to a mate.” Data’s expression turned to one of skepticism. “While I can feel that the affects of the Ver’meta have abated, I must question your statement. I am a machine. I do not have a soul.” Beside him, Gemma laughed. “That’s ridiculous, Data. Of course you have a soul,” she chastised him. “That is not possible, I-“ “Data, you-“ the amado began, but stopped. “I think I can prove it to you. I hope this does not offend you, but I own a service robot. If I perform the Meta’lema on the robot and Gemma, you will see the proof. The silver bodied machine came when the amado called and knelt before Gemma in the pool, as instructed. As Data watched, he could see the red tendrils flow from Gemma once her fingertips made contact with the crystal. Nothing came from the robot. Gemma’s tendrils seemed to search until they found Data. Once discovered, they flowed around him. To further prove his point, the amado told Gemma’s brother to join her in the pool. His tendrils flowed, but they just surrounded him, as he was unbonded, while Gemma’s still looked for Data. Everyone turned to see an android that was stunned speechless. Gemma came to him, taking Data’s hands in her own. “Are you all right, Data?” she asked. Data looked at her, still trying to assimilate this information. “I-I did not believe...I would not have believed it possible. How is it possible?” he stuttered. The amado laid a comforting hand on Data’s shoulder. “We do not always understand the ways of the gods, my son. You must simply accept this. You could not have bonded with Gemma without a soul to join with hers. Data, what is the name of your father?” Gildas asked. Puzzled by his question, Data furrowed his brows, but answered despite this. “My father was Noonien Soong.” Gildas smiled and nodded, obviously pleased. “Data Soong, yes. A fitting name. Very fitting.” Data looked to Gemma, who grinned. “Your full name also has meaning in Kriosian, Data. It means ‘beloved son’.” Plaree Corazon took his wife in his arms, whispering in her ear, “Our daughter is not our little girl anymore, Yedray. Her bond with Commander Data is stronger than any I have ever seen.” “Including ours, my husband.” “Yes, including ours.” The couple smiled at each other knowingly. “We must make amends.” Gemma and Data were still speaking with Amado Gildas when her parents approached them. “If you will excuse me. I must now return to my other duties. My blessings to you both,” Gildas smiled. “Thank you, Amado Gildas. I will be forever grateful to you for your assistance.” Data wrapped his arms around Gemma, pulling her close. “As will I,” Gemma added, as she embraced Data. “Seeing a bond as strong as yours is thanks enough.” Amado Gildas turned, nodded at Gemma’s parents, and reentered the temple. “Commander, please forgive us. Our behavior was inexcusable. Gemma was right, we didn’t give you a chance. We want to rectify that now. Please join us at our home so we can get to know you.” Plaree offered his hand to Data, who accepted it immediately. “Thank you, sir. I accept your apology,” Data replied as the two men shook hands. “I too wish to get to know all of you better.” As the group walked to the shuttlecar, a concerned look came over Data’s face. “Sir, when we arrive at your home, please allow me to repair the door I damaged.” “No, Comm...Data, I think I would like to leave it as is for now. It will serve as a reminder not to judge others so quickly,” Plaree smiled at Data. “But thank you for your offer.” Gemma and Data’s visit to Krios went by quickly. Gemma took Data to many of her favorite spots including the real café that had been in her holodeck program. They even had time to do some shopping. Data purchased an authentic eeltot prayer set, some real morsalov ale and a case of Vorim wine for Captain Picard, as a thank you gift. The highlight of the visit for Data was the huge celebration Plaree and Yedray threw to celebrate Gemma and Data’s bonding. Gemma and Data were sitting in their shuttle getting ready to depart from Krios. They waved to Plaree and Yedray as the shuttle started its ascent. Once they had left the system, Data entered the coordinates for their rendezvous point with the Enterprise and engaged the automatic helm control. He stood, pulling Gemma out of her seat as he did. “I love you, Gemma. I am very happy your family has accepted and blessed our relationship,” he smiled, before pulling her into a passionate kiss. “And I love you, Data. When do you think I will be able to meet your mother?” She reclaimed his lips before he could answer. “I do not know. Altrea IV is in a remote area of the Quadrant.” Again he kissed her with a blazing passion. “As long as I meet her before we marry I’ll be happy.” Her lips returned to his before he could respond. “Then we see eye to eye on this matter,” he grinned as he gently caressed the tears along her hairline. “Our Ver’meta may be gone however my desire to make love to you for hours is stronger than ever.” “Now that sounds like a plan,” Gemma laughed as Data scooped her up in his arms and headed for the back of the shuttle. Data gently lowered Gemma onto the bed in the shuttle’s cabin. He quickly maneuvered himself to her side. Gemma continued her gaze into Data’s golden eyes as she drew him closer to her. As their lips were about to touch, Data closed his eyes as he sought out her kiss. Not being able to find her sweet lips, Data opened his eyes. He looked around seeing only white. “Q!” he called out. “Please return me. I beg you!” “Don’t fret now, Data,” Q said as he appeared before the perplexed android. “I will reunite you with your beloved bond mate in time. First, we talk.” There was another flash of light, this time Data found himself lying on a couch with Q sitting in a chair next to him, pen and paper in hand. The scene reminded Data of the Sigmund Freud holodeck program he had created years ago. “Now tell me Mr. Data, how does it feel to be alive?” “Alive? I do not understand what you mean?” “At the hearing where you were declared to be sentient, what were the requirements that Commander Maddox stated you must have to be considered alive.” “Intelligence, self-awareness and consciousness. Captain Louvois ruled that although she did not know if I had a soul that I must be allowed to find out for myself.” “Exactly, Data! And you did find out. When you opened yourself to the possibility of love, you found a woman whose love for you proved the very existence of your soul.” Q paused momentarily before continuing. “A human’s journey towards enlightenment never ends. There is always something more to learn, to discover. Your own quest for humanity will never end either, Data, but now...now you are so much more than a sentient being. You are alive. Enjoy it, Mr. Data, enjoy it.” There was another flash of light. Data felt the bond of his love as his lips met Gemma’s. He thought of Q’s words and smiled to himself. “I love you so much, Gemma,” he whispered in her ear. “I am the happiest man alive.” |
