SECOND CHANCE © 2004-2007 By Lessa and Takara Soong
As Data made his way on to the bridge of the Scimitar, he could hear the computer counting down the few remaining seconds before the thalaron radiation weapon would be ready to fire upon the Enterprise. He knew he did not have time to disarm the weapon, leaving only one alternative to save the Enterprise and her crew. He saw a flash of light coming from the top of a set of stairs and rushed towards it. His eyes immediately fixed on Captain Picard as he stood pinned against a wall by an impaled Shinzon. Data moved quickly to push aside the lifeless body of Picard’s clone before attaching the emergency transport device he was carrying to Picard’s uniform. Data activated the transporter and watched as Picard dematerialized in front of him. “Good-bye,” Data whispered before turning his phaser towards the thalaron intermix chamber and firing. An intense white light enveloped Data as the explosion ripped through the Reman ship, destroying it. Data looked around but all he could see was white. Everything was white. This surprised him, as did the fact he appeared to be in one piece, undamaged by the explosion. He slowly moved forward, looking around intently trying to find a clue to what had happened. Suddenly, he saw the outline of a figure emanating from a white light. He could not make out whom or what this figure dressed in a white hooded robe was. “Excuse me, I am Lieutenant Commander Data,” he called out as he moved slowly toward the mysterious figure. “May I inquire as to whom you are?” The figure slowly stepped out of the light, raised what appeared to be human hands and began to push the hood back. As the figure’s face became revealed, Data heard a familiar voice. “Well, if it isn’t my old professor of the humanities.” “Q!” Data exclaimed. “That’s right, Data,” Q smirked. “Surprise!” “Q, why am I here? Where is this place?” Data asked. “Come now, is that any way to greet an old friend?” Q asked smugly. “Please answer my questions, Q.” “I suppose you wouldn’t believe me if I said this is heaven and I am God. Jean-Luc had his doubts so I’m sure I couldn’t convince you. However, Data, I’m here to give you the same opportunity I gave to your captain. A chance to save your life by changing something from your past, something you regret.” “Captain Picard shared with me his experience. He discovered that by pulling on one thread, the tapestry that is his life changed completely. I do not wish to change anything. While there are moments of my life I may wish to have again, I learned from Captain Picard’s experience. I would not wish to change anything if it means I would lose the friendship of my crewmates.” “So you would rather your circuits and servos be floating through space than change anything?” Q noted. “While I would prefer to remain alive, yes, I would sacrifice my life again if it meant saving the Enterprise and the lives of my friends and crewmates.” “Even though you don’t want to change anything, I do. You saved my life when I was a mere mortal and now I am going to save yours.” There was a sudden flash of light and Data found himself alone in this place. It had taken a week to bring the Enterprise-E back to Earth. The damage she had sustained would take another month to repair. During that time many changes were going to occur. Captain Riker and Counselor Troi would soon be leaving for Riker’s new command on the Titan. Dr. Crusher was leaving for her position at Starfleet Medical in a few days. Picard was going to miss his friends - his family. But mostly he was missing Data. The idea of having a new first officer who was not Data still seemed obscene to him but Picard knew he would have to accept this eventuality. Data was dead and he could not change that, no matter how much he wanted to. He also could not stop the sense of betrayal he felt. Admiral Haftel ordered B4 moved to Starfleet Research just as he had ordered Lal there so many years before. This time, Picard had no defense to stop the transfer. Lal had reached sentience, B4 had not. As soon as the Enterprise arrived, B4 was lead away. Picard barely had the opportunity to speak to the android before they took him away. Picard was sitting in his ready room reading over reports on how the ship’s repairs were progressing when he saw a flash of light and realized he was no longer alone. “Q!” Picard exclaimed, irritation instantly coloring his tone. “Greetings mon capitaine. It has been a long time since we last saw each other, hasn’t it?” Q looked at the uniform he was wearing before commenting. “These new uniforms are rather drab. I much prefer my old colors. They were much more cheery, weren’t they?” “What do you want, Q?” Picard asked, impatiently. “Come now. I don’t want anything. I’m here to give,” he smiled sheepishly. Suddenly, Picard found himself sitting in his chair on the bridge. There were more flashes of light as Will Riker, Deanna Troi and Beverly Crusher now appeared. Geordi La Forge and Worf were on the bridge, feeling the shock of the sudden appearance of their friends and Q. “Now that I have you together, it’s time for my gift. Jean-Luc, you’ve always been the closest thing to a friend that I’ve had and I want to thank you for the fun we’ve shared together over the past fifteen years. There is someone else that I wanted to thank but, alas, poor Data is not here.” “Q, that’s enough. I don’t want you tormenting us in our time of grief,” Picard admonished, his impatience moving into something akin to rage. “But mon capitaine, I’m not here to torment. I’m here to relieve that torment,” Q answered as though insulted by Picard’s words. “I have come to repay a debt that I owe, not only to you but to Mr. Data as well.” There was another flash of light and suddenly Data appeared on the bridge of the Enterprise. “Data!” everyone exclaimed, stunned to see their friend before them, alive and whole. “Q, what have you done? Have you changed my past to bring me here?” Data asked. “I requested you not do that.” “No, Data. I haven’t changed your past. I’ve changed your future,” Q proclaimed. “Jean-Luc, I return to you your friend and new first officer. I have paid my debt to you, mon capitaine. Mr. Data, I owe you a little more. I have two more payments for you and then my indebtedness to you will be gone. The first is this.” Q now held a small computer chip in his fingers. “My emotion chip?” Data sounded confused. “But the Borg Queen damaged it so it no longer functions.” “It does now.” The omnipotent being had a twinkle in his eyes and a bright grin on his face. There was another flash of light as the chip disappeared, however, Data’s reaction indicated the chip was once again functioning within his neural net. “My final payment is a little different, Data. I will be placing a treasure on this ship and you will have to find it,” Q grinned with anticipation. “A treasure?” Data questioned. “Yes, Data, a treasure, but not the type of treasure that you’re thinking. This treasure has to do with emotions.” Q paused for effect before continuing. “Many of your closest friends are leaving for new challenges and some of your crewmates were lost in battle. There will be many familiar faces on the Enterprise when she leaves dry dock as well as many new ones. One of these faces belongs to a special woman, Data, and she is your treasure. I’m not going to make things easy though. You must find her yourself but she will be here. And now my time here must end. Enjoy this second chance I have given you, Data. There won’t be a third.” “Thank you, Q. I am very happy to be back” Data smiled, still shocked at all of this. “Yes, Q. Thank you, from all of us,” Picard added, stunned, but wondering if there was still a catch to all this. With a flash of light, Q was gone. Data’s friends rushed to him, exchanging hugs and tears over their friend’s return. They all wanted to touch him as if to make sure he really stood before them. “This calls for a celebration,” Picard announced. “But first, Mr. Data, may I see you in my ready room?” “Of course, Captain,” Data replied. As the doors closed behind them, Picard turned to Data and smiled. “Mr. Data, it is good to have you back!” He started to reach out with his hand before changing his mind. “Oh what the hell!” he exclaimed before giving the surprised android a firm embrace. “Now please, sit down.” Picard walked around his desk and sat down. He apologized to Data for being unable to stop Starfleet Research from taking B4. Next, they discussed a pleasant visit they would have to pay to Starfleet Command to have Data declared “undead” and reappointed to his new position as first officer. Picard also updated Data on the events of the past two weeks. “I find it difficult to comprehend that I was away for that period of time. I was with Q for only a matter of minutes and yet two weeks have passed here,” Data spoke in astonishment. Data then told Picard what had occurred between himself and Q. They discussed how similar it was to the captain’s experience. Picard contacted Starfleet Command to notify them of their arrival. Although there had been some shock and skepticism, with the proper reports filed, Data was quickly declared “living” and his promotion reinstated to take affect in two days. The speed at which all of this was accomplished astounded Data and Picard and they wondered whether Q had played a part in this as well. The next three weeks rushed by quickly as repairs were completed and new crew taken aboard. Data did not have much time to meet the new crewmembers or become reacquainted with the returning crew as much of his time was taken up by his new duties. The free time he did have was spent with his old friends, not only celebrating his return, but also saying farewell to Captain Riker and Counselor Troi and seeing Dr. Crusher off to her new assignment. During this time though, Q’s words swirled in Data’s mind each time he saw a woman walk by him. ~ My treasure ~ he thought. ~ I wonder who she is? ~ As the last of the crew arrived, Data familiarized himself with all the personnel changes that had occurred. Dr. Selar was now the new Chief Medical Officer, replacing Dr. Crusher, and a new doctor, Dr. Mark Newcombe, joined the section. Counselor Troi’s replacement, a Denobulan woman named Faalox, would be more of a traditional counselor in that she would not be a regular on the bridge as Counselor Troi had been. Data looked over the arrival reports and wondered what his first meeting with the new second officer/head of operations, Lieutenant Commander Gemma Corazon, would be like. He was curious to meet the woman who would be taking over for him at the ops station. Gemma Corazon’s excitement was bubbling within her as she beamed aboard the Enterprise-E. She had experienced an emotional roller coaster from when she was first given this assignment. Gemma had felt excitement initially over serving on the Enterprise. However the events on the Scimitar changed that to sadness as the thought of replacing someone who died in the line of duty deeply affected her. Now though, with Commander Data’s return, she was once again looking forward to serving under Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the recently resurrected first officer. “Welcome aboard, Commander Corazon. I am Lieutenant Commander Worf. Captain Picard is in his ready room. I will escort you there now,” the large Klingon instructed. “Thank you, Commander,” Gemma responded as she made her way off the transporter pad. The Klingon Chief of Security was not talkative as they made their way to the ready room. He informed Gemma he would show her to her quarters when she finished meeting with the captain. Her belongings would be there when they arrived. When they reached the ready room, Gemma pressed the chimes, seeking admittance. “Come.” Gemma stepped in and stood at attention. “Lieutenant Commander Gemma Corazon reporting for duty, sir.” “At ease, Commander,” Picard responded as he stood and moved towards her with his hand extended. “Welcome aboard.” The captain said warmly and then motioned for her to sit as he returned to his chair. “Thank you, sir,” Gemma replied as she made her way to the chair Picard indicated and sat down. “It may be out of line, sir, but on behalf of my people, I wanted to thank you again for all you did to ensure Kamala arrived safely to fulfill her role as wife to Alrik.” Picard shifted in his seat and pulled at his uniform front, a sign to those who knew him that he was uncomfortable. “That was years ago, and my role was nominal, I assure you.” “You may have been but a link in the chain, sir, but as you know, it only takes one broken link for the burden to crash to the ground, shattered. I don’t mean to embarrass you, sir. It was simply something I had to say.” Her smile was genuinely warm, with a trace of sheepish uncertainty that caused Picard to chuckle. “I can understand your feelings on this matter, and now I realize you can sense mine. I just lost my half Betazoid counselor and now I have an empathic second officer.” Picard raised his eyebrows meaningfully at her and she smiled. “I try to only read those I’m close to, but feeling the direction my commanding officers are leaning towards in a crisis has come in handy a time or two. I give you my word, sir, I will never invade your privacy.” She spoke with solemn sincerity. “I think that is a wise decision, Commander. Since you’ve only just arrived, I’m sure you have yet to meet many of the other bridge officers,” he said, changing the subject. “No, sir. I met the news of Commander Data’s return with great relief. After the losses suffered in the battle with the Scimitar...it’s difficult to be happy about a promotion under those circumstances.” It was now Picard’s turn to look solemn. “It’s not something you ever get use to, Commander. We lost many fine people. As Mr. Worf would no doubt tell you, we honor them by doing their jobs as we believe they would have done.” “A wise sentiment,” she agreed with a nod. “Mr. Worf will see you to your new quarters. The rest of the new personnel should be arriving within the next two hours. I have scheduled a senior staff meeting for 1530 hours. That should give you a little time to settle in.” The captain came to a stand again and extended his hand. “Once again, welcome aboard, Commander.” Gemma rose too and shook his hand, thanking him. She knew a dismissal when she heard one, so she turned and headed for the bridge, where Mr. Worf would be waiting. As she crossed, she took a moment to look over her new post. It looked like a comfortable chair and a well-designed board. The young lieutenant who was currently rewiring a part under the console looked over from his work to smile at her. “New upgrades. Kicking the response time up by .25 seconds. Your station, Commander?” he asked. “Yes. I’m Lieutenant Commander Corazon.” Gemma reached over to shake the man’s hand, not caring that it was dirty from his work. “Lieutenant Copper. Pleased to meet you. And don’t worry, I’ll have her up and running in a jiffy, sir.” Gemma grinned at the man and his outgoing manner. “Somehow, Lieutenant Copper, I have no doubt you will. It was nice to meet you,” she said, flashing him a parting smile as she moved to where Lieutenant Commander Worf was waiting for her. “This way please.” Worf motioned Gemma towards the turbolift. “Your quarters are on deck two.” The silence in the turbolift continued as Worf and Gemma walked down the corridor to her quarters. Gemma did not need to be empathic to tell that Lieutenant Commander Worf felt uncomfortable around her. “Here we are, Commander,” Worf spoke as he motioned to the door. Gemma smiled as she saw her name was already on the door. Once inside, Worf pointed out a few of the features of the quarters before starting to exit. “Commander,” Gemma called before he reached the door, “Have I done something to offend you? If I have, I assure you it was unintentional.” Worf turned back to look at his new superior officer with an uncertain look on his face. “You have done nothing to offend me, sir. If I gave you that impression-” “I know you feel uncomfortable around me but I’m not sure if it’s because of something I did or didn’t do,” she interrupted. “How do you know that?” he asked confused. “I’m empathic. Your discomfort was so strong I couldn’t block it out,” she explained apologetically. “Empathic?” Worf was even more confused now. “I did not know there were Trill empaths.” “Trill! Commander, I’m not Trill. I’m Kriosian but I am often mistaken for a Trill.” She smiled gently as she ran her hand over an area along her hairline where the dark pigment dotted her skin. “I hope in time you will feel more comfortable around me and we can be friends.” Worf nodded his head and was gone. Gemma sighed. She knew that Worf’s confusion regarding her appearance was not the only reason he was uncomfortable with her. She could not help but wonder whether he was unhappy that she was the Enterprise’s new second officer and not him. Gemma decided to clear her mind and wander around her new quarters. She wanted to get the feel of her new home before she unpacked. After moving some of the furniture to accomplish a Kriosian version of feng shui, she felt much more comfortable in her new surroundings. She instructed the computer to inform her when it was time to leave for the briefing and began to put away her belongings. When she finished, she replicated a light snack to enjoy while she waited. It was 1520 when Gemma left to attend the briefing. She was not the first to arrive but she was not the last either. Worf approached her with an unfamiliar officer at his side. “Commander, may I introduce our chief engineer, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge.” “It’s nice to meet you, Commander. I know we will be working closely at various times so can we arrange a time to meet later? I’d like to speak with you so I can further familiarize myself with my new surroundings.” “It’s a pleasure to meet you, too. I’d be happy to go over things with you. If you’re available after the briefing, we could go down to Engineering and I can show you around,” Geordi offered. “Thank you, Commander. I look forward to it,” Gemma smiled. “Is it safe to sit anywhere? I don’t want to take someone’s favored place at the table,” she asked as she motioned towards the chairs around the table. Geordi laughed before pointing out who sat where of the returning senior staff. Pointing to a chair that was to the right from where Captain Picard would be sitting, he suggested she sit there. The assembled staff was all seated at the table when Captain Picard and Commander Data entered the briefing room at exactly 1530. Picard sat at the head of the table with Data to his left, across from Gemma. He smiled and nodded at her as he sat. There was no time to introduce himself as the captain started the briefing immediately. “It would seem that we are to receive a shakedown mission or two for the time being.” The captain announced opening the meeting. “Ortic V is in need of skilled miners in their new settlement. We are to pick up and deliver a party of miners from Clervon Major. The miners will be bringing some heavy equipment and their personal effects. Data, we’ll need rooms for twenty-six. Commander Corazon, you will supervise clearing the two storage bays needed for their equipment. The leader of the group, Gavin Cortez will be coordinating with you and Commander La Forge to ensure all their equipment is in perfect working order before we deposit them on Ortic V.” Gemma nodded. “Understood, sir.” She turned to nod at Geordi as he nodded at her. “I assume the miners will require thorough examinations and full inoculations before their departure?” Dr. Selar interjected. “Correct, Doctor. I leave that in your capable hands. A briefing to inform the miners on the conditions they can expect on Ortic V is also necessary. Data, you can handle or delegate that one.” Looking from Data to Gemma, the captain asked. “ETA to Clervon Major?” Gemma tapped a console beside her, but before she could respond, Data replied in her stead. “At warp four, we should reach standard orbit in three days, fourteen hours, Captain,” he stated placidly. Gemma looked over at the android with some confusion. She was sure the captain had directed the question to her, but it was not something to make an issue of. Plastering a smile on her face, she let it go. The meeting broke up after the captain stood and introduced everyone around the table for the benefit of the new crewmembers. Welcoming the new counselor and second officer again, he nodded and left the room. Gemma and Geordi left the briefing room and headed for Engineering to begin discussing the necessary preparations for the miners' arrival as well as to acquaint her with the area. Once they finalized what needed doing, Gemma contacted the appropriate personnel, providing instructions on clearing out the needed storage bays. Throughout their discussions, Geordi found the knowledge possessed by the new second officer to be impressive, especially for someone of her age and limited Starfleet experience. "Well, Commander, I think we’ve covered everything." Gemma smiled and began to turn to leave when she noticed Commander Data arriving. She slowed her pace in case he wanted to discuss the preparations with her. Data nodded at her in passing, and continued on his way towards La Forge. "Geordi, I am able to assist you now in finding that fluctuation in the shield generator," Data informed his friend. Gemma turned to face the two men before speaking. "Sir, I would be happy to assist Commander La Forge in tracking down the fluctuation." Her confusion as to why La Forge had not asked her in the first place was evident. "Thank you, Commander Corazon, however I believe we have things under control," Data replied. He then turned and began discussing the problem with Geordi. Gemma decided to let this go as well. ~ They just need a little time to adjust, ~ she thought. As she and Geordi had met for some time, Gemma decided to make her way to the storage bays to check on the progress there. Pleased with the accomplishments, she also decided it would be a good idea to make sure the personnel knew to contact her if they had any questions. There was not much time left in her shift as Gemma made her way back to the bridge. She wanted to take her station to get the feel of things. After giving the captain a quick report on their preparations, she sat in her chair, glancing over the controls in front of her. She could not help but smile as she thought how comfortable she felt at ops. After her shift ended, Gemma decided to find the lounge and see what it felt like. Feeling comfortable with the atmosphere, she had just ordered some dinner when she noticed a vaguely familiar man was heading her way. “Gemma Cor-something” he said, stumbling over her surname. “Corazon. I recognize you too, but I can’t get a name at all. Academy?” she asked, pointing to a chair in case he wanted to sit. “Dr. Mark Newcombe, Commander Corazon. Yeah, we were there at the same time, I was class of ’54. You were ’58, weren’t you?” Mark asked as he made himself comfortable in the chair beside her. “Yes. You’re new here too?” she verified. When Mark nodded, Gemma grinned. He stretched his long and lean body out in the chair, giving Gemma a moment to study him. He was close to six feet tall, muscular, but not overly so. His hair was short, but wavy. His light blue eyes were a sharp contrast to his nearly black hair. “I think I’ve been here two hours longer than you, but I don’t think that counts towards seniority,” he said with a charming grin. Gemma chuckled and relaxed into her own chair. Mark joined her for dinner and the two enjoyed getting to know each other better. Before they parted, Mark asked her if it was okay to ask his superior officer if she wanted to have dinner together the following night. “I can’t think of any regulation against it,” she said with a grin as she stood. “See you tomorrow.” The following day progressed well until Commander Data took the center seat after the captain retired to his ready room to study reports. Gemma noted the close proximity of a rogue asteroid to a nearby star. Despite there being no inhabitants in the system, the event was still a scientific curiosity. When she rose from ops, heading for Science One, the commander beat her to it. “Sir, I can monitor the progress of the asteroid,” she assured him, cautiously. She felt displaced, standing uselessly beside him. “No need, Commander Corazon. It would appear the asteroid will collide with the star. I will record the event. You may return to ops.” He never took his eyes from the monitor as he spoke to her. Swallowing a sigh she knew he would hear, Gemma stiffly walked back to her station. Staring at him, she opened her mind shield and tried to determine if she could sense anything empathically from an android. While it was confusing to her at first, after a few moments of concentration she was able to untangle some of the conflicting emotions she was receiving from him. Recalling what she had read regarding Data’s operational capabilities, it was not so surprising that he was reacting to all the things he was thinking about at the same time. Closing her mental shield with a sigh, Gemma realized that in order to have a chance of finding out what the commander thought of her, she would have to catch him in the act, so to speak. The rest of the shift went smoothly and, slowly, Gemma started to feel comfortable again. She spent some time becoming further acquainted with the ship's personnel and later, after her shift, started to make some new friends as well. Joining Mark Newcombe and her for dinner were Dr. Selar and the new counselor, Faalox. Gemma liked Faalox as she was so laid back with a smile that made one feel completely at ease. Dr. Selar would take a little longer to get to know as Gemma always had difficulty feeling completely comfortable around beings that repressed their emotions. The next day seemed to be almost uneventful as they were nearing Clervon Major. It appeared that everyone was finally adjusting to the changes and starting to become accustomed to their respective duties. "Sir, we will reach Clevron Major in five hours," Gemma informed the captain. "Are the storage bays ready, Commander?" Picard asked. "Aye, sir," Gemma responded. "When we reach standard orbit, Commander, you may leave to supervise the loading." "Aye, sir." The time passed quickly and soon the Enterprise entered orbit around Clervon Major. As she entered the storage bay that would be loaded first, Gemma was surprised to see Data and Geordi standing to one side of the bay. They were obviously discussing the operations about to begin, based on the gestures of both men. Gemma made her way over to them, concerned that she had missed something in her preparations. "Commander Data, Commander La Forge, I hope no problems have arisen regarding loading the equipment." "No Commander. Commander La Forge and I were discussing how best to proceed with the actual loading," Data replied. "With all due respect, Commander, should you not be discussing that with me? I am in charge of this operation," Gemma reminded her superior officer. Geordi thought it best to leave, so he made up an excuse that one of his staff was calling him and excused himself. "You are correct, Commander. My apologies." Data was about to continue when the captain's voice came over his Comm badge. "Commander Data, report to the bridge." "I am on my way, sir." Data started to leave when Gemma called to him. "Commander, may I speak with you privately when we have finished with the loading?" "Of course, Commander. I should be available to meet with you once you have completed your duties here." "Thank you, sir." Once the transporting of the equipment began, the frenzy commenced. Gavin Cortez was impossible to please. He began by fussing and fighting over every detail regarding the loading of the miners’ equipment and finished by complaining about the maintenance schedule and the number of personnel assigned for this task. All of this despite the fact he had approved everything before the Enterprise had arrived. By the time all of his complaints were addressed, Gemma was exhausted. Gemma’s mind felt befuddled with all the information and emotions that bombarded her from the opinionated mining leader. As she finally left cargo bay two, it dawned on her that she still had one more stressful matter to deal with - Commander Data. She decided to go to her quarters for a quiet moment alone and for some time to collect her thoughts. Considering the gravity of the situation, one misplaced word could earn her a reprimand on her record. She tried to have a bite to eat as she practiced what she would say to begin the most dreaded conversations she would ever have in her life. She was halfway through her sandwich when her comm badge signaled. “Data to Commander Corazon. Did you still wish to meet with me?” She quickly swallowed the morsel of food she had in her mouth and tapped her badge. “Aye, sir. My apologies, Commander, I’ve only just finished with Mr. Cortez and was having something to eat. Where shall I meet you, sir?” she asked, trying not to sigh. “I am in my quarters now. You did request privacy, correct?” he inquired. “Yes, sir. I can be there in ten minutes, if that’s agreeable,” Gemma told him. “It is. Data out.” Quickly finishing the rest of the sandwich, Gemma ran to wash her face and hands. Running a comb through her auburn hair, she headed for her meeting. Standing before his door, Gemma rang for admittance. She heard the commander call for her to come and the door slid open. Scanning the room, Gemma found the commander sitting at his desk. “Greetings, Commander. Would you care to sit?” the android asked, pointing towards a chair that faced his desk. “Yes, sir. Thank you,” she said, still trying to gather her nerves, but at least she had an opening line ready. Once she was sure she had his complete attention, Gemma spoke. “Commander, I am having difficulty in discerning what is required of me here. I was under the impression that I was to be the science officer and in charge of operations. Under the guidelines I have been given, the scans of the asteroid’s collision with the star should have fallen under my jurisdiction. Also, as I specialized in many areas that relate to engineering, I am fully capable of assisting the chief engineer, should the need arise. If I have misunderstood my assigned duties and the areas that fall under my jurisdiction, please correct me.” Data sat silently, his eyes moving from side to side as he reviewed his memories for the past few days. A frown crossed his lips as he continued. Gemma was becoming more nervous the longer he stayed silent. It was well over a minute before the first officer finally spoke. "You have not misunderstood your duties, Commander. It would appear I have unintentionally stepped on your toes. I will endeavor to desist in this behavior. Please accept my apologies." Gemma quickly looked down at her feet before remembering it was a human expression. "Of course, Commander. I realize there is need for a period of adjustment especially as I am taking over the position you held for a great many years. Being familiar with your impressive career, sir, I hope, in time, you will accept me as being at least an adequate successor." "Adequate?" Data questioned. "I am familiar with your record, Commander, and I am certain you will be much more than an adequate successor. I am distressed though that you feel I have not accepted you in your position. In fact, it was my recommendation to Captain Picard that you be offered it." Data spoke in a tone indicating he was more hurt than angry. "I did not mean to give you that impression, Commander." Gemma paused for a moment. "Permission to speak freely, sir." "Of course, Commander." "My experience from my previous two postings may have colored my judgment. I’ve found that some individuals have a difficult time accepting me as being qualified and competent, because of my age and what they see as my inexperience. I was unsure whether you were 'stepping on my toes', as you said, because you were still adjusting to your new rank and position or whether you had doubts about my abilities," Gemma explained. "I can assure you I have complete confidence in your abilities, Commander." "Thank you, sir, and thank you for taking the time to speak with me," she said as she began to rise from her seat. "You are welcome, Commander." Gemma began moving towards the door, when Data called to her. "Commander, do you play poker?" he asked. "Yes, sir. I’ve played a hand or two," she smiled. "The senior officers have held a weekly poker game for many years, however with the departure of Captain Riker, Counselor Troi and Dr. Crusher, we have a few openings at the table. I will be hosting the game tomorrow evening, commencing at 1900 hours, should you wish to join us." "Thank you, Commander. I would be happy to take your money...I mean join the game," she smirked. "Good night, sir." "Good night, Commander." Gemma returned to her quarters feeling relieved that things seemed to be settled with her superior officer and she still had her position as second officer. The next morning, Gemma found several new complaints from Gavin Cortez that she had to address before she was able to make an appearance on the bridge. When she took over ops from Lieutenant Copeland, Commander Data had the bridge. He came over to her briefly, asking for her status report. She was pleased that he seemed much more relaxed and amiable towards her as she filled him in on the latest complaints. Once that was done, the commander made his way to the helm to speak with Lieutenant James when tactical reported what appeared to be a tachyon eddy. Gemma looked up to see Data standing beside her, his fingers starting to punch in the commands to scan the eddy. Gemma looked at him out of the corner of her eye, just in time to see the commander’s whole body tense up, his eyes close and his hands slowly withdraw from her board. Sighing softly, he opened his eyes again to give her an apologetic grimace. Gemma finished entering the necessary commands for the scan. “Confirmed, Commander,” Gemma stated. “My scans indicate the outer rim of the eddy extends approximately fifty-three kilometers across.” As Data ordered the helm to make a course correction, Gemma lowered her shields for just a moment. She could pick out the frustrated embarrassment that was now prevalent in his emotional tone. “New course plotted and laid in, sir,” Lieutenant James replied. “Acknowledged,” Data said with a nod. He then turned and went back to the captain’s chair. Ten minutes before Gemma’s shift was to end, Commander Data stood up from the center seat and requested she join him for a moment in the observation lounge. Once the door closed them off from the bridge, he turned to her with the apologetic expression on his face again. “I regret that I inadvertently stepped on your toes again, Commander. I-“ Gemma raised a hand to cut him off. “Sir, I’m fully aware it was unintentional. I’m sure it is simply a matter of overcoming something that has become habit for you.” Data gave her a weak smile. “It would seem so. Perhaps the challenge of a new post, coupled with once again having emotions is causing more of a detrimental affect on my ability to perform my duties than I realized,” he speculated. “I don’t understand. Having emotions again?” she questioned. Data focused on her again to explain. “Yes, my emotions chip, which allows me to feel, was damaged during a mission. When Q saved me, he also restored my emotion chip. I have been slowly trying to reintegrate emotions into my life. It would seem I have not been as successful as I had hoped.” He turned his eyes again, in contemplation. “Commander, permission to speak freely again?” Gemma asked, hesitantly. “Granted,” Data said, absently. “You just made a mistake. It was a little one too.” He seemed distressed at this observation. “I am an android, Commander. I-“ “So you’re not allowed to make mistakes? Forgive me sir, but that’s just ridiculous. All sentient beings are capable of error. It’s not against regulation and, in this case, I know you did it out of habit and intended no insult to me.” “True,” Data allowed. He looked like he was going to continue, but she beat him to the punch. “Let’s just agree to pretend it didn’t happen and move on, agreed?” Data grimaced. “It did happen and it should not have,” he reminder her, stubbornly. Gemma sighed, but then something occurred to her. “Commander, I understand you’ve participated in several theatrical productions over the years. True?” “Yes,” he admitted, confused. “Act like it didn’t.” With a sigh of defeat, he nodded. “Perhaps I will at that.” Finally he gave her a weak, but sincere smile. “Commander, you do intend to join the poker game this evening?” he asked. “Yes, I’m looking forward to it, sir,” she assured him. “Excellent. I will see you at 1900 hours then. Dismissed,” he concluded, with a brighter smile. With her shift at an end, Gemma returned to her quarters where she changed into some casual clothes and had something to eat. She checked to see if she had any correspondence or messages but, other than receiving a few periodicals she subscribed to, there was nothing of interest. She made a quick entry in her personal log and then it was time to leave for the poker game. When Gemma arrived at Data's quarters, Geordi was already there. "Good evening, Commander," Data greeted her with a smiled. "I am glad you could join us." "Since this is a friendly game, I would prefer you call me Gemma, if that's okay." "Of course, Gemma. Despite our bumpy start I do hope we can be friends," Data responded. "So do I, Commander." "Then you must call me Data," he corrected gently. "And I'm Geordi," the engineer added. Faalox and Mark Newcombe arrived a few moments later with Worf close behind, so it was now time to get down to business. Data handed out the poker chips and announced to the newcomers the ante amount. He cut the cards with one hand before shuffling them. "Do you play poker as well as you handle the cards?" Gemma grinned. "He's just showing off," Geordi teased. "He's not that good." Data gave his friend a disapproving look before laughing. He indicated what the game was as he dealt the cards to each player. "I'm not sure if everyone here knows that I'm empathic," Gemma started to say as Data continued to deal. "I give you my word as a Starfleet officer that I do not use my ability when I play poker." "I didn't know there were empathic Trill," Geordi commented. "She is not Trill, Commander. She is Kriosian," Worf corrected. "Kriosian?" Geordi repeated. "Why does that sound familiar?" "The Enterprise-D hosted a Ceremony of Reconciliation between my people and the people of Valt Minor. Chancellor Alrik married Kamala aboard the ship and our systems have lived in peace since that time," Gemma explained. "The role the Enterprise played in helping us is one of the reasons I decided to join Starfleet and why I'm so thrilled to be working with so many officers who served on the D at that time." Geordi won the first hand while Worf took the second. It was now time for Gemma to deal. She looked over at Data and winked before cutting the cards with one hand, just as he had done, and shuffling. "Five card stud, no wild cards," she announced as she dealt. As the evening progressed, Gemma was turning out to be the big winner. As she, Geordi and Data were left in one hand, Geordi was having a difficult time deciding whether to stay in or fold. He looked over at Data and then Gemma. "Damn, I fold," he announced. He looked over at Gemma and shook his head. "You've got a poker face that would make Will Riker proud." "He has a good poker face?" Gemma asked. "The best I have ever seen," Data commented. "Your poker face is excellent as well. I too fold." As Gemma pulled the pile of poker chips towards her, Faalox and Mark both announced they would have to call it a night. Worf too was leaving so the game ended. "Can I help with the cleanup?" Gemma offered. "Thank you, however I believe Geordi and I can take care of it," Data smiled. "Okay then. Well, good night and thank you for inviting me. I look forward to next week's game." Data and Geordi wished Gemma a good night and started the cleanup. Gemma walked down the corridor to her quarters, ~ I think I'm going to like it here ~ she thought. The next morning, Gemma’s main goal for the day was to work with Geordi and see to the maintenance of the miner’s equipment. They had a full team working with them and, the previous day, one had worked to catalog what parts would be needed in preparation for today. As the two Lieutenant Commanders worked, they chatted, each trying to get to know the other better. Gemma decided she found Geordi’s company most comfortable and enjoyable. During their discussion of music, they discovered they shared many of the same favorites. “Have you ever heard any Kriosian music?” Gemma asked as she made the final connections on a new power cell for a loader. “No,” Geordi answered, sounding apologetic. “I’ll have to let you listen to some recordings I brought with me some time. Considering your tastes, I think you would enjoy many of the selections I have. If you’re adventurous, I may even play my ooblet for you.” Geordi poked his head out from behind an access panel. “What is an ooblet?” he asked, sounding intrigued. “I do not wish to interrupt your conversation but I too wish to know what an ooblet is.” The voice of Commander Data caused both Geordi and Gemma to turn their heads in his direction with expressions of surprise. “However, first, I wish to inform you that I am available to assist, if you would not mind, Commander Corazon.” When he had completed this statement, he was looking Gemma meaningfully in the eyes. Gemma knew he was trying to assure her that he was not trying to step on her toes, but just had the time to help. “The more the jollier or is that happier?” she asked, not sure about the human saying. “Merrier,” Data supplied, with a smile. “Marry her?” Gemma asked in a bewildered and taken aback tone. Geordi chuckled and Data smiled brightly too. “No, Commander. More merry – merrier,” Data explained and then chuckled too. “Oh,” she said, blushing at her error. She was staring at the panel in front of her when he came up beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. “I too have had trouble with many of the human sayings and slang terms in my years. Do not be embarrassed, Gemma. They have many confusing phrases.” Data hoped that if he used her name rather than her rank, it would help to relax her. He was beginning to feel more comfortable with this woman and he did not want their progress in acclimating to each other to be lost. As first and second officers, they would no doubt be working closely for years to come, so an agreeable relationship was imperative. With a sheepish smile, Gemma said, “Well maybe you can coach me on some of the trickier human sayings so I don’t get caught like that again.” She looked over to him and tried to smile. “I would be happy to, on one condition.” “What’s that?” “You tell us what kind of instrument an ooblet is,” he said with a smile. Gemma smiled. “You got it, Data. An ooblet is a stringed instrument that is similar to the Terran cello in sound although its appearance is a little different and it has six strings rather than four," she explained. "Fascinating," Data commented. "I would be most interested in hearing you play." "So would I," Geordi added. "Well, I guess I could invite some people to my quarters for a Kriosian night. It would be a chance to introduce my new friends to the culinary and cultural delights of Krios. Does that sound interesting or would you be bored to death?" Gemma asked, looking from Data to Geordi. "I cannot imagine anyone dying from the affects of spending an evening in your company, Gemma," Data smiled. "I'm glad to hear that," Gemma laughed. "I'll let you know when I have something arranged but now, I think we should get back to work." The work went much quicker with Data's assistance. When the repairs were completed, the three officers made their way to the main lounge to get something to eat but mostly to relax. "I know you two have served together for many years but have you been friends the whole time as well?" Gemma asked. "Data and I have been friends from the very beginning. I was Chief Con Officer when I came to the Enterprise-D so our stations were next to each other. I think the fact we were different from everyone else made it easy to become friends," Geordi said as he smiled at his best friend. "Different? How so?" "Blind man and the android - can you think of a better team?" Geordi grinned. Dinner was good but the conversation was better. Data and Geordi told Gemma about some of the more interesting missions in which they had participated. They also quizzed Gemma about her time in Starfleet. It did not take long for Geordi to find out how Gemma had risen in rank so quickly. It was three hours later when Gemma finally excused herself, pleading an early shift the next day. The miners' equipment would be offloaded at 0500 and Gemma needed to be there to supervise. The two friends remained behind for another half hour, talking about what they had learned about the new third in command. “She’s a fast learner. We went over the specs for those antiquated hulks in the cargo bays and she had them down faster than I did. You’ve read her record, Data. Her story about the explosion at Utopia Planitia, did she leave anything out?” Geordi asked his friend. The story Gemma had told them recounted the events of the tragic accident that involved the experimental use of Transwarp drive. The teams working on the project were sure they had finally gotten all the bugs out of the works and now had a stable Transwarp drive. The drive was installed in the Starship Impenetrable, and was scheduled for testing at the same time the Horizon, Gemma’s post at the time, was docked there for a computer core upgrade. The testing team for the new Transwarp drive swore it passed every test administered but it was later discovered that a shortcut had been taken and that lead to the horrific tragedy. The Impenetrable was powering up to go into its first Transwarp run, when the starboard nacelle exploded. Gemma was in one of the transporter rooms on her ship finishing some routine checks. Knowing about the launch of the Impenetrable, Gemma was watching it on the viewer. She looked away to check a readout, but a blinding flash and rocking of her own ship got her attention. Wasting not a second, Gemma opened her comm signal to the other transporter rooms and ordered the techs to lock onto any life-form readings they could get from the Impenetrable. Since the explosion had not begun in the warp drive, but had caused a warp core breach only moments later, it was a miracle that anyone survived. It was Gemma’s quick thinking and the unusual method she employed to stack the life-forms she locked onto, keeping them in flux, until she could beam them in, which earned her much recognition. The feather in her cap was that only the skeleton crew in engineering had been lost and one of those saved was the son of the Federation President. Gemma’s retelling of the event had downplayed her hand in the rescue, but Data was privy to more than she knew, his clearance being higher than hers. Data told Geordi as much as he could and let him surmise the rest. “Damn! And from what we heard here and what you know, we know that wasn’t her only moment in the spotlight. I see why you recommended her, Data. I wonder how good a cook she is?” Geordi mused, wanting to think about less serious matters for a while. “Her record does not include that information,” Data informed him with an amused grin.
Gemma was up early the next morning to begin supervising the offloading of the equipment. As she made her way to the storage bay, she began to plan a menu for her get-together. She hoped she had not gotten herself in over her head. Gemma was pleased the offloading was going so smoothly. Geordi came to check on the progress made shortly after 0700. "I came down to see if you needed any help but it looks like you’ve got things under control," he commented. "Thanks, Geordi. I think we should be finished in a few hours but if we need any help I'll contact you." Geordi turned to head back to Engineering, paused and then came back to where Gemma was standing. "Gemma, if you aren't doing anything later, would you like to have dinner in the lounge this evening?" "Sure. Should I meet you there?" Gemma asked, with a pleased grin. "No, I'll come to your quarters at 1730." "Okay, I'll see you then, Geordi," Gemma smiled. Geordi returned to Engineering with a bright smile on his face. Once the miners and their equipment were safely on the surface of Ortic V, the Enterprise left orbit with Gemma back at her ops station. The rest of the shift was what could best be described as a typical day. It went by quickly and soon it was time for the shift change. Data and Gemma rode the turbolift together to deck two. They talked briefly about the miners with Data mentioning that Captain Picard had been happy with how smoothly everything had gone. "Gemma, if you are not busy this evening I would be happy to coach you on human sayings," Data offered. "I'm sorry, Data. I can't tonight. Geordi asked me to have dinner with him. Can I get a snow check on that?" she asked. "I believe you mean rain check and, yes, you may," he smiled gently. "Oh Gods, I need more help than I thought," she exclaimed. "Good night, Data." "Good night, Gemma. I hope you and Geordi have a fun evening." Data continued on to his quarters as Gemma entered hers. She changed into a nice black dress that flattered her figure but was not too sexy. She pulled the clips from her hair and ran her brush through her auburn locks a few times before studying her appearance in the mirror. Gemma realized she was nervous. ~ I haven't been on a date for years. I hope I remember what to do, ~ she sighed. She gave one last look in the mirror as the door chimes rang before heading to the door. "Gemma, you look great," Geordi beamed after she greeted him. "Thank you, Geordi. You look great yourself," she smiled. "Well, if you’re ready, our table awaits." The lounge was busy, but Geordi had indeed called ahead, reserving a table for two. They chatted briefly about some of the outlandish complaints Gavin Cortez had made while on board the Enterprise and each shared stories of similar troubles with guests or even crewmen they had experienced in the past. “I think the one that gave me the most trouble was a Zebyerin ensign who would complain every morning that the water in his quarters was the wrong color. He could not find anyone who would do anything about it.” Geordi laughed as he told Gemma about this. “I think Data finally told him some long-winded reason why nothing could be done, after a month of his mouthing off. He was quiet after that,” Geordi said shaking his head and grinning at the memory. “I think he decided the odd water color was better than another twenty minute lecture about the filtration process of the water aboard a starship.” Gemma laughed too, but when she took a moment to have a sip of her tea, Geordi decided to change the subject. “Gemma,” he began, “Were you really serious about having a get-together in your quarters sometime soon? I’m interested in learning more about you, and your home world too, of course,” he added quickly. “I was serious. Now I just hope I can make it work. I’m not adept at planning social gatherings. I stand in the glimmering of my mother in that area,” she said with a shrug. “Stand in the glimmering? I don’t quite follow...” Geordi admitted. “Oh, hmmm, I don’t measure up. My mother is the cook in the family and she could also plan a large gathering between breaths.” Gemma smiled at the thought of her family and this appealed to Geordi. “But you can cook?” he asked with a curious grin. “Yes, if you come, I promise I won’t kill you through the stomach,” she promised with a grin. It was late when Geordi finally escorted Gemma back to her quarters, but the time they shared was very enjoyable. He was delighted at how effortless it was to talk to Gemma, while most women just caused his tongue to wrap itself in a knot. When they arrived at her door, Geordi told Gemma he hoped she had enjoyed the evening as much as he had. At her sheepish nod, he took a cleansing breath and leaned in to kiss her softly on the cheek. Blushing slightly, Gemma moved quickly and kissed him on his cheek before saying goodnight and ducking into her quarters.
As Gemma got ready for bed, she replayed the events of the evening over in her mind. She had enjoyed her time with Geordi and it felt so good to actually go on a date again. She had put her personal life on hold in favor of her career but, then again, there had not really been too many offers either. She changed into her pajamas, completed her nightly ritual and crawled into bed. She was tired from the early morning and the late evening but it was a good tired. Sleep came quickly for her. The next day, Data and Geordi were having breakfast together in Data's quarters. They did not do this often but Data had left a message for Geordi the night before asking him to come. He was curious about how Geordi's date went and did not want to wait until later in the afternoon to find out. "How was your dinner with Gemma last night, Geordi?" Data asked as he finished laying out the breakfast he had replicated. "I knew that was why you asked me here this morning," Geordi laughed. "If you do not wish to talk about it, I understand. I did not mean to pry. I only-" "It's okay, Data," Geordi interrupted. "I don't mind. I had a really nice time. I felt comfortable with Gemma. She's very easy to talk to." "Will you be seeing her again?" Data asked. "I hope so, Data, I hope so." As Data and Geordi talked, Gemma was finishing her own breakfast. She was in a good mood this morning, thanks in large part to Geordi. It was 0555 when she started to make her way to the bridge. She was looking forward to seeing what this day would bring. Data had some things to think about as he took his shift on the bridge that morning. He had talked to Geordi regarding his promise to coach Gemma on her knowledge of human slang, proverbs and sayings, but her having gone on a date with Geordi caused the android to doubt if that was now appropriate. “We just had a first date, Data. I don’t have a problem with you meeting with her and keeping your promise,” Geordi assured his friend when Data had broached the subject over breakfast. “If you are sure-” Data began, skeptically. “I’m sure. She’s a very nice woman and I do want you to get along with her, no matter what.” Geordi had a meaningful expression on his face. “I know you two had a rocky start so that should help mend the bridge.” Data assured his friend that he and Gemma had overcome their difficult beginning, but he thanked him for his concern, nonetheless. Deciding it would be acceptable to ask, Data found a moment when Gemma was taking a routine scan at Science One and went to speak to her. “I was curious to know if you would still be interested in my instructing you on-“ “Things like how it’s rain check and not snow check?” Gemma finished for him with a grin. Data nodded. “If you feel it would not be appropriate-“ he began again. “Did Geordi think it would be inappropriate?” Gemma asked, sensing the android would know the answer to this question. “No. If you feel it would be, however-“ “Would tonight be good for you, Data?” she asked, cutting him off a third time. “Only if you promise to allow me to finish one of my sentences.” He raised an eyebrow at her, but when she turned red, he chuckled. “May I invite you to my quarters at 1800 hours?” he asked, still wondering if that was a good time and if he should have invited her for dinner as well, or avoided that out of respect for Geordi. This was very disconcerting. Sensing his confusion, Gemma smiled and told him that would give her just enough time to change and have something to eat. Suppressing a sigh, Data nodded. “I look forward to it. I have an extensive file on this subject. It may take more than one meeting.” He was back to wondering if this was a good idea, again. “Sounds good. It will give us the opportunity to get to know each other better. I think the relationship between the first and second officers is an important one and the benefits will extend beyond just you and I if we are comfortable with each other.” Data was impressed by the logic of this statement. “I agree,” he said. With a smile and a final nod, he returned to his station. Captain Picard was in his ready room going over the details of the Enterprise's next mission. It was another shakedown mission that called for the reseeding of the ozone layer on Corius IV. The planet had developed a large hole in the ozone layer because of outdated weapons testing procedures causing radiation levels to rise to near dangerous levels. Picard rose from his chair and tapped his communicator "Dr. Selar report to the briefing room." He then walked onto the bridge, giving orders as he moved. "Helm, set a course for Corius IV, warp 5. Number One, Commander Corazon, you're with me." Data and Gemma followed the captain to the briefing room as Dr. Selar arrived and followed them inside. "We are proceeding to Corius IV on a mission to reseed the planet's ozone layer. There is a massive hole over the central continent, which is causing an increase in radiation levels on the planet. Dr. Selar, we will need a large supply of hyronalin to treat the planet's affected populace. It has been estimated that four million people will be suffering from radiation poisoning by the time of our arrival. Commander Corazon, you are in charge of the reseeding efforts. I would like you both to coordinate your efforts with Commander Data. Dismissed." Reseeding an ozone layer was a relatively simple procedure. It only took a few minutes for Gemma and Data to iron out the details while Dr. Selar returned to sickbay to have her medical personnel begin replicating the necessary hyronalin. They arrived at Corius IV three hours later and the mission was completed before the end of the shift. The reseeding had gone flawlessly while the hyronalin had been transported to the surface. The Corians informed Picard the Enterprise's assistance in inoculating their people would not be necessary and thanked him for Starfleet's help in alleviating the situation. Data and Gemma were riding the turbolift together after their shift. Both agreed they hoped this would be the last of the shakedown missions. When Gemma arrived at her quarters she waved to Data and smiled as she entered. After the doors had closed, Data continued to his quarters trying to decide where to start with his lesson. He was looking forward to this although he did still harbor some guilt that he would be seeing Gemma. He tried to push the guilt aside since both Geordi and Gemma had told him everything was fine. As he approached his quarters, he noticed a new crewmember walking down the corridor - a woman. He looked at her and, once again, thought of Q's words before entering. Data fed Spot and sat at his desk to record entries in his First Officer’s Log as well as his personal log. He was pleased with the working chemistry he and Gemma were developing. He was surprised when the minor gripe she expressed today, regarding shakedown missions, was one he shared. He also recalled Geordi making a similar comment about Gemma, which caused Data to again be plagued with guilt. He was tempted to turn his emotion chip off, but the words of Counselor Troi came back to him, reminding Data he would never get used to his emotions if he kept turning them off. Data finished his log entries and called to Spot with her favorite play toy. While playing with his beloved pet, he thought over which sayings he would discuss with Gemma tonight and how to make the lesson interesting. His door chime rang at 1757 hours. Leaving the cat and cat toy on his couch, Data rose to greet Gemma. “Greetings,” Data said, once the door slid open to reveal his guest. He discovered she had changed her attire. She wore a dark green cashmere sweater that looked as soft as Spot’s fur and a pair of black formfitting pants. While she wore her auburn hair clipped back during her duty shift, she had taken it down now. Her hair curling in just at the end seemed to draw one’s eyes to the nape of her neck and the trail of pigmentation there. Data was disconcerted by this effect so he turned away to allow her room for entry. “I didn’t mention it before, Data, but these are nice quarters. I’ve been a Lieutenant Commander for eighteen months now, how much longer before I can hope for a promotion?” Gemma chuckled as she followed him into the room. Data turn to her and said, “Ask me no questions and I will tell you no lies.” “What?” Gemma asked, confused. Data led her to a furniture grouping and invited her to sit. They both did before he answered. “It is one of the phrases from Earth’s history. I hope I can help you recognize one when you hear it. The list of examples is extensive, so I hope I have not bitten off more than I can chew.” He gave her what he hoped she would see as a meaningful smile. “Bitten?” she gave him a confused look for a moment, before her eyes went wide. “Oh, was that another one? Say it again,” she requested. “Have I bitten off more than I can chew. One of the difficulties is also deciphering the phrase’s meaning. In this case, I would be wondering if the task in question was too complex to achieve success,” Data explained. “I see...hmmm. Give me anther one,” she urged him, enthusiastically. Seeing Spot walk by and eye Gemma suspiciously, Data was reminded of one from his past. “The cat is out of the bag.” “I was going to try to guess what some of these mean, but I’m beaten with the first one. Why would you put your cat in a bag? That was a cat that just ran under that chair, wasn’t it?” Gemma asked, leaning over, trying to see where Spot had gone. “Yes, that was my cat, Spot. I would not put her in a bag, although I have been forced to place her in a case that was designed for the transport of live animals. The saying refers to a secret being divulged.” Gemma laughed and shook her head. “What a strange way to say that.” Data smiled. “Agreed. I have heard of numerous colorful sayings from many cultures, but it has been my experience that humans have the most unusual selection. For instance, I was once told to mind my P’s and Q’s. Being that the captain’s name is Picard and his nemesis at that time was Q, I believed it was a reference to them. I discovered it was actually a reference to pints and quarts, a measurement of alcoholic beverages. The saying has many meanings, but one is from old Earth. One would go to a bar, tavern or pub and drink pints or quarts - P’s or Q’s. Payment was due at the end of the evening for what was consumed and the barkeeper would keep a tally of how much one drank. If one became too intoxicated, the barkeeper may add to one’s tally, thus cheating the patrons.” “Wow, and this saying comes from how long ago?” Gemma asked. “It is not known, but it may be over 600 years old.” "This is fascinating. Tell me more please," Gemma asked excitedly. "There are a number of old sayings that originate from the game of poker," Data informed her. "An example is when someone states an opinion they may say they are putting their two cents in.“ “I’m curious. What other ones did you have trouble with, Data?” “Be careful. Curiosity killed the cat,” Data smiled. “Data, I would never hurt Spot!” Gemma sounded horrified. “Or is that another saying?” “Yes, it means you should be cautious when investigating situations,” Data continued. “Shortly after I arrived on the Enterprise-D, I was assisting Commander Riker with some research. He made a comment that we were looking for a needle in a haystack which, to me, seemed very unproductive. The saying refers to searching for something almost impossible to find.” “There are so many. I’m sure what you’ve told me is only the peak of the glacier, isn’t it?” “Tip of the iceberg,” Data corrected. “I’m hopeless,” Gemma groaned. “I have made similar mistakes as well, so do not give up. I once told Dr. Crusher I was in pursuit of an untamed ornithoid rather than on a wild goose chase,” Data laughed. Data and Gemma spent another hour going over various proverbs and axioms before Gemma’s attention was drawn to an object on Data’s desk. “Is that a violin?” she asked. “Yes. While I have been programmed to play many instruments, I gain my greatest pleasure from playing the violin. “I would love to hear you play sometime.” “I will be participating in a recital in two days time. You are more than welcome to attend.” “I’m looking forward to it but, now, I’m afraid I’m going to have to go. It’s getting rather late. Thank you for your help, Data. I hope we can continue this another evening,” Gemma said, her eyes glowing with the same enthusiasm Data had seen there almost all evening. “I would be happy to further assist you. Good night.” Gemma stood and made her way to the door. She looked back and smiled at Data before leaving. Data sat back down on the couch. He could not remember the last time he had laughed so much. His guilt returned as he realized just how much fun the evening had been.
Data met Geordi for lunch the next day and was hesitant about dealing with the moment when Geordi asked him about his meeting with Gemma the previous night. Data knew there was no avoiding it, so he just waited for it to happen, feeling the anxiety grow with each passing moment. Finally the words were said. “So, did you and Gemma get along last night?” Geordi asked, between bites of a chicken salad sandwich. Data sighed. “Yes, it was a pleasant evening.” When this was all Data said, Geordi gave him a look of disbelief. “It was that bad? I thought you two had buried the hatchet, Data?” Geordi had obviously taken Data’s brevity for a bending of the truth. Silently groaning and wishing he could turn the chip off for the 47th time in the last thirty minutes, Data corrected his friend. “You misunderstand. I did not equivocate in my statement. We did indeed have a pleasant evening. Gemma expressed an interest in attending the recital tomorrow. Perhaps you should offer to escort her,” Data suggested. Geordi narrowed his eyes at Data. “You’re sure everything’s okay between you two? I don’t want something to happen between Gemma and I if you two can’t get along. You’re my best friend, Data and I’m not letting anything or anyone get in the way of that.” Geordi’s words had a calming affect on Data. He was correct. Their friendship had seen them through hell and back more than once. If Data was also comfortable with Gemma, that was a good thing. It would mean Geordi would not have to choose between them, they could all spend time together or just two of them at a time. They could all be friends and then no one lost and no one got hurt. Data pushed the guilt he had been feeling away. It was a useless emotion at this time. His new confidence gave him an idea. “Perhaps you and Gemma could enjoy dinner before the recital and after its conclusion, the three of us could enjoy each other’s company, if you would not mind?” Data suggested, with a returning hesitance in his voice. Geordi patted Data on the arm with enthusiasm. “That’s a great idea, Data. I’ll ask Gemma as soon as possible. This is gonna be great. Damn, now I wish tomorrow would hurry up and come.” Data smiled at Geordi’s excitement and was pleased he had had a hand in it. Seeing his friend this lit up meant the world to Data. ~ Now if I can find my treasure, we could double date, ~ he thought, absently scanning the room and taking note of all the unattached females present.
Gemma was enjoying her first day off since coming aboard the Enterprise. She spent part of the morning reading a research paper that had been prepared by a Commander Bruce Maddox. She had only gotten half way through it before she had to put it down. It did not seem to matter how good his research was, his writing style always made her feel as if he felt he had to talk down to people so she could only take his papers in small doses. ~ I need to relax, ~ she thought. She looked around her quarters until she spied something out of the corner of her eye that made her smile. It was her sketch board. She had almost forgotten she had brought her art supplies, she had been so busy. She collected everything she needed - her sketch board, her pastel and charcoal sets, her blending brush and paper - before heading for the arboretum. The arboretum was where Geordi found her later in the day. She was so caught up in her art that it took her a few seconds before she realized Geordi was watching her. "Hi," she smiled as she placed the pastel stick she was holding into its case. "Hi Gemma. I hope I'm not disturbing you." "Of course not. Please sit." She patted the space beside her and smiled up at him warmly. Geordi sat down next to Gemma, peeking at the drawing she was working on. "You’re really good. That's amazing." Geordi’s voice had a hint of awe to it. "Thank you. Would you like to pose for me one day?" she asked. "I'd be honored," he smiled, taken aback. "Gemma, would you have dinner with me tomorrow evening. I was hoping that we could go to the recital afterwards." "I'd like that, Geordi." "I was talking to Data earlier. He was hoping the three of us could get together after the recital, if that's okay with you." "Sure, sounds like fun." "Great. I'll see you tomorrow then. Pick you up at 1730 for dinner. That will give us plenty of time before the recital starts." "Sounds like a plan," Gemma smiled. "What?" Geordi asked surprised. "Did I say that wrong?" Gemma groaned. "No, you got it right. Is that one Data taught you last night?" Geordi asked. "Yes, it was. I can't believe how complex your sayings are," Gemma laughed. "Looks like you got off to a good start last night. I'll see you later. I've got to get back to Engineering." After Geordi had left, Gemma returned to her drawing. She spent the rest of the afternoon drawing the various plants and flowers although her thoughts did wander quite often to her date the next night. The Enterprise had been assigned an area to patrol due to recent reports of abductions from planets that were members of the Federation. The abductions were disturbing in and of themselves, but the fact those taken were all young females made the rumors of sex slave raiders more believable. The bridge of the Enterprise was a solemn place that day, but Gemma still looked forward to the evening. When she and Data headed for the lift at the end of their shift, Gemma touched his arm. “I’m really looking forward to this evening’s recital and getting together with you and Geordi afterwards. That is still the plan, right?’” she asked, making sure. Data grinned. “Yes, I was pleased to find out through Geordi that you had agreed to the idea. I too look forward to getting to know you better.” She grinned and gave his arm a squeeze, showing greater excitement. “I looked up something. It’s supposed to be a phrase of good luck before a performance, but it doesn’t sound like one - break a leg, Data.” She looked so proud of herself, that Data hated to tell her, but he had to. “That is typically used for performers in a play, not a musical recital,” he explained, his expression pained for having to burst her bubble. She looked downcast for a moment before she brightened. “Well then, break a string,” she offered hopefully. Data had to laugh, but he decided to take that one in the manner in which it was intended and to hell with the correctness of it. “Thank you, Gemma. I will do my best with the luck your wish will surely grant me.” He patted her hand that still rested on his arm and grinned at her. She tilted her head to the side, knowing he was placating her. “It’s still wrong, huh?” she asked, knowing it was. “A saying does not have to be old. Perhaps you have just coined a new one.” This seemed to please her, or at least pacify her. Data was not trying to patronize Gemma, since he was truly flattered she had tried to find a phrase that could be used to wish him well tonight. She waved at him as she made her way to her quarters to prepare for her date and Data went to feed Spot. In his quarters, Data tried to busy himself with five or six different tasks he wanted to research, but found his attention was drawn away as he replayed his encounter with Gemma in the lift. After this occurred the thirty-sixth time, Data felt a wave of cold fear crash over him. Why was he thinking about her? And why could he not seem to stop thinking about her? The more Data tried to push these thoughts from his mind the more frequent they became. He admonished himself a number of times, repeating 'Geordi is my best friend’ until the thoughts finally left him. Gemma changed into a navy blue dress with a high scoop neck front and an open back that featured crisscross straps and a velvet tie. She had just finished getting ready when Geordi arrived. “Wow! You look fantastic,” Geordi exclaimed. “Thank you, Geordi,” Gemma said blushing slightly. Dinner in the lounge was quite enjoyable. The pair spoke about their respective families. It saddened Gemma to hear how Geordi had lost his mother some years before. He remained close to his father and sister, seeing them whenever he could. Gemma spoke of her parents in glowing terms but her expression changed when Geordi asked about siblings. “I have an older brother, Thierry,” she began. “We don’t get along though. He and I are so completely opposite it’s hard to believe we have the same parents and had the same upbringing,” Gemma sighed. “I’m sorry to hear that.” Geordi decided a change in topic away from her brother would be advantageous. “Are you the only artist/musician in your family?” “My mother, besides being the master planner, is also a master entertainer. She passed along to me her love of the arts and thankfully I inherited some of her talent as well,” Gemma grinned. When they finished their dinner, they made their way to the recital room. The room was filling up quickly as this was the first social gathering since leaving dry dock. Captain Picard was sitting in the front row when he saw his second officer and chief engineer enter. He called to them and invited them to sit with him for the performance. The captain asked Gemma how she was enjoying her new assignment and the three enjoyed some general chitchat until the trio of musicians entered to the applause of the audience. They took their places and began the concert, which featured selections from the works of the Vulcan composer Delvok, and the ancient Earth composers, Bach and Vivaldi. Data had many solos throughout the recital, which he not only played flawlessly but with great emotion. When the recital concluded, the musicians were met with a standing ovation. Data smiled when he noticed Gemma wiping tears from her eyes. Once the audience started to clear out, Data made his way to Geordi and Gemma. “I need to return my violin to my quarters before we begin our time together. Are there any suggestions as to what activity we should undertake?” Data asked. “I have an idea. Let’s go to the holodeck but I’m not going to tell you what I have in mind. I want it to be a surprise” Gemma said coyly. It was not until they began to leave the recital room that Data got his first glance at the back of Gemma’s dress. He desperately tried to suppress a gasp at the sight as he found it so appealing. The way the dark pigments made their way down the center of her back almost seeming to end where the straps crisscrossed was very alluring. When they arrived at the holodeck, Gemma punched in a set of commands before turning to her companions. “Gentlemen,” she started as she moved to the holodeck entrance, “You are about to get your first look at one of my favorite places back home. I hope you like it.” The doors opened and the trio entered. Geordi and Data looked around in awe at the surroundings. There was a small outdoor café that featured a breathtaking view of a spectacular waterfall. You could feel a light mist coming from the basin of the falls at your table and it felt marvelous. A holodeck waiter appeared and Gemma ordered them each a morsalov, the traditional ale enjoyed by Kriosians at special gatherings. Geordi and Data were still taking in the view as the drinks were brought out. “This is incredible, Gemma,” Geordi said as he continued to take in the beauty. “I concur with that assessment. I also find this beverage to be quite delicious,” Data added. Geordi chuckled at his friend, but went ahead and tried the drink, trying not to visibly grimace at the abhorrent flavor. Gemma looked at him directly, looking disappointed. “You don’t like it?” she asked, knowing he did not. “It’s-” he coughed. The grimace he had been trying to hide could not be now. “I think it went down the wrong way.” Gemma gave him a gentle smile. “It’s okay to say you don’t like it, Geordi. Your feelings on the matter are coming through loud and clear. It’s hard for me to block out...revulsion.” She gave him an understanding smile. Geordi smiled back, apologetically. Data smiled. “Perhaps this is one of the benefits to being an artificial life-form,” he said as he took another drink of ale. Gemma looked at him with confusion. “What do you mean by that, Data?” “As an android, my thoughts cannot be detected by telepathic races,” Data stated, lifting the glass and enjoying the color as the reddish sun shone through. “Well, I can’t speak for telepaths, but I can sense emotions from you. I am just an empath.” Now it was Data’s turn to sputter on his ale. With feelings of dread ripping through his mind along with guilt, terror and embarrassment, Data turned very worried eyes of amber in her direction. “May I ask what you have sensed from me?” As soon as the words were out of his mouth, Data wondered if that had been a bad thing to ask here and now. Gemma looked contemplative. “Well, I’ve only tried a time or two. When I was trying to figure out if I had done something to offend you but I do get a jumble of emotions. It takes me a few minutes to sort them all out, but I can definitely sense you, Data.” At that moment the expression about getting a sinking feeling in one’s stomach became understandable to Data. He was relieved to hear she had not attempted to discern his emotional state in recent days. But that may not remain a constant. Data looked down at the bluish liquid in his glass and wished it would effect him like humanoids at this moment. “It doesn’t take an empath to see you’re disturbed by this, Data,” Gemma said, touching his hand as it rested on the table. “I don’t make a habit of reading people, but if their feelings are particularly strong, I have trouble blocking them out. Like when Geordi took a drink of the ale, my stomach hurt for him,” she grinned and shrugged helplessly. “I see. I will keep that in mind. I did not mean to offend you. It is just that while Counselor Troi could sense Lore, my brother, she could never sense me. I had assumed the difference in our brains... It is an intriguing revelation.” Data closed his mouth to stop the flow of words before something came out that would further embarrass him. The waiter came out to check on them so Gemma ordered two more morsalov ales and a Kalamar Sunrise. The waiter left but returned quickly with the drink order. “I think you’ll like this drink, Geordi. It tastes very different from the ale,” Gemma said hopefully. Geordi took a cautious sip before making his pronouncement. “This is much better,” he grinned. “Are you going to be serving both the ale and the Kalamar Sunrises at your Kriosian night?” “I will now,” she laughed. “I think I have all the details worked out, thanks to a few communications back and forth with my mother. My next day off is in six days so that will give me lots of time to prepare everything. Would you both be available to come that evening?” Gemma was happy when both Geordi and Data said they would be able to attend. “However, I do wish we could hear you play the ooblet prior to that evening,” Data said hopefully. “Are you really sure you want to put yourselves through that torture?” she asked half seriously. When both men nodded, Gemma sighed. “Okay, but don’t forget, I will know if you don’t like it.” Gemma ordered the computer to create an ooblet. She ran the bow across the strings, making sure it was properly tuned. It was. She moved her chair away from the table and took the proper position with the ooblet between her legs. “This is a piece composed by Raisat Kriam. She is one of our most celebrated composers.” Gemma took a deep breath and began to play. The beautiful sounds of the ooblet soon filled the holodeck as Geordi and Data sat entranced. Data wondered whether the expression on Gemma’s face was similar to his own when he played a particularly moving piece on his violin. She seemed to have merged herself completely with her instrument and the music. When she finished playing, she looked over at her audience. ~ Well I don’t feel revulsion from them anyway, ~ she thought. “You play beautifully, Gemma,” Data beamed. “I hope we can play together some time. Do you have any sheet music for this and other pieces composed by Ms. Kriam that I could borrow?” “Sure, Data,” she smiled. “Geordi, what did you think?” “That was breathtaking,” Geordi answered sincerely. They stayed in the holodeck for another hour before calling it an evening. They made their way back to deck two, with Data being the first to reach his quarters. Geordi escorted Gemma to her quarters, stopping outside her door. “I had a great time this evening,” Geordi smiled softly. “So did I, Geordi,” Gemma concurred. Geordi reached over with his hand, stroking Gemma’s check gently. He then leaned over to give her a tender kiss on her soft lips. “Good night, Gemma.” “Good night, Geordi.” Gemma walked into her quarters, turning her head to smile at Geordi as the door closed. She sighed as she thought about the fun she had had at dinner with Geordi. The recital had been wonderful and the time spent in the holodeck had been especially incredible. She had kept her empathic shield up when Geordi kissed her but wondered if she should lower it the next time. The following duty shift was rather disturbing for Gemma. There had been twenty-eight young girls abducted from their homes during the night. The slave ship had apparently gotten wind of the Enterprise’s presence and stepped up their operation. It was believed they would now move on to another area. The abductions had taken place on Treiet III, so an away team was dispatched to gather any information they could to assist in tracking the slave traders down. While Data was in command of the mission, Gemma led the team that was questioning anyone who would be able to give helpful information. Worf was a part of Gemma’s team and he and Gemma questioned the families of fifteen of the missing young ladies. With each statement they took, Worf became more and more angry. “These slavers have no honor. I cannot even begin to count the ways in which they defile their names.” “I agree with you. It frightens me to think of what is being done to those girls as we stand here.” Gemma looked horrified as she said this. Worf turned to face her. His scowl covered his face and now he even growled with fury, but Gemma did not flinch. She discovered it was best to keep herself open to him, so she knew exactly what it was she had done or said to upset him. Being that she was tuned into him, she knew Worf was angry with the slavers and not her. The image she had just given him caused his fury to rise, but with it, his determination also rose. The pace he set was exhausting, but considering what was at stake, Gemma just ran along beside him and did her best to keep control of her own emotions. It was a relief to return to the ship and her station at Science One, where she worked with Worf, Data and Lieutenant Ryan correlating data. Gemma was still at her post well after her shift ended, working with Data. When he finally ordered her to allow her relief to take over, a sort of depression settled over Gemma. When she stepped into the turbolift with Data, she was still lost in thought regarding the missing girls. “Are you all right, Gemma?” Data asked. He looked worried, she noted. “No, not really. I can’t stop thinking about those girls and what could and likely is happening to them,” she sighed. “It scares me, Data. I’ve encountered cruelty before, but not this kind. I can’t get it out of my mind.” The lift door opened on deck two. Gemma walked slowly out with Data following the disconcerted second officer. When they reached one of the places set aside for people to stop, sit and talk, Data asked her to join him there. “Perhaps it will help to talk about this. It is late and you will need to sleep soon. If your mind is troubled now, you will have difficulty relaxing in preparation for sleep.” Gemma looked at Data, sadly. “I’m not sure I will even be able to perform the eeltot tonight,” she admitted. Data accessed the reference, his eyes moving quickly. “The meditation and prayer before sleep in your culture?” Gemma nodded. “I don’t know how you can do it, Data...not just you...all of us. It’s so-“ “Gemma,” Data interrupted with just a word and a touch to her arm. “You must put it out of your mind. Tomorrow, dedicate yourself to stopping this travesty, but tonight, you must relax and try to ready yourself for sleep.” “I can’t,” she insisted. Data moved his head in that particular way that told those who knew him that he had an idea. “Come to your quarters, Gemma. I will help you relax.” In his thinking mode, Data simply rose from the chairs and headed towards her quarters. Gemma had to almost run to keep up with him. They entered and Data took a moment to familiarize himself with her quarters. He saw her ooblet in the corner, the sketching supplies that Geordi had told him about and many plants. Data told Gemma to sit at her table, but she just looked at him. “What are we going to do?” “First, distraction,” Data admitted. Gemma smiled. “Well then let me get out of my uniform, if you don’t mind?” She was turning towards her bedroom when she stopped, uncertain if this would be inappropriate. “You find your uniform uncomfortable?” Data asked. Gemma laughed, “You don’t?” as she did now head for her bedroom. Data ran his hand over the material of his uniform, considering the texture as he waited for her to return. She came out in lounging wear of a shimmering red color. The pants and top were both loose fitting and the pants flared at the bottom, flowing about her ankles as she walked back to him in bare feet. Data noticed her feet also had the alluring spots, but pulled his eyes away. He asked her to sit and then replicated her a chocolate sundae, chocolate mousse and a slice of double chocolate cake with chocolate icing. “Our former counselor always indulged in chocolate if her mind was burdened with unwanted troubles,” Data explained and encouraged Gemma to try them. “Ah, chocolate, I have tried it but never this much of it.” She grinned at him from across the three bowls. She did try some of each and while she did, Data told her some more sayings, old wives’ tales and proverbs. Gemma grinned between bites. Finally, when she was full of all the chocolate she could stand, Data could see Gemma was still not fully relaxed. “Perhaps you should try a bubble bath,” he suggested. “I’ve heard of that too, but never tried one. I never quite saw the point,” she admitted. Data smiled. “It is not an efficient way to clean one’s exterior, however, I have tried it and it is...pleasant. I will show you.” Data cleared the dishes and then replicated a bubble bath scented with tiltash oil, a flower native to Gemma’s home world, and one she had suggested. He asked her to show him to her bathtub and followed her there. Ordering the computer to set the water at the exact temperature he wanted, Data poured a generous amount of the liquid into the water flow and both of them watched the mound of bubbles as it grew and spread across the surface of the water. The fragrance also filled the air inducing Gemma and Data to inhale deeply. “I love that scent,” she sighed. Bending down to touch the bubbles, she smiled. “I like this idea, Data. They’re soft.” She ran her hand over the top and then plunged her hand in, bringing a handful out again with it. “The idea is to bathe in them, Gemma,” Data said, smiling at her childlike enthusiasm. “The combination of the fragrance, the warmth of the water and the soothing effect of the bubbles should help you to fully relax.” He touched his finger to the pile of bubbles in her hand and drew away a few. He touched them to her nose, grinning. Gemma laughed for the first time since reporting for duty that morning. She grinned at him and, lifting her hand, blew some of the bubbles off towards him. Laughing, Data caught most of them, but some got in his hair and Gemma laughed again while brushing it away. “The thickness of that mass of bubbles makes them opaque, Data. If I were in there, you couldn’t see a thing,” she noted. Looking from the bath and back to Data, she blushed slightly. “Turn around, Data. And close your eyes.” “Gemma, I-“ She did not let him finish. “You want to know if this works, don’t you?” She motioned for Data to turn around and this time he did. He heard a small splash a moment later. “Okay,” she laughed again. “By the light of Ordarin, you were right, Data. This is wonderful.” Data turned around to see her head and shoulders out of the water, but that was all, however that was enough. The little trail of spots went down each of her shoulders and then down her back and her front, it seemed. Data found himself breathing harder and he knew he must leave immediately. “Then I will leave you to your bath. Pleasant dreams, Gemma.” Data nodded at her and turned to go, but before he could, she lifted a leg out of the water and he saw the trail went all the way down to her toes. “Goodnight, Data. Thank you for all your help. I’m sure my dreams will be good,” Her voice sounded very relaxed and alluring. The more relaxed Gemma became the more her empathic shield lowered. She suddenly felt a jumble of emotions coming from Data as he was leaving, causing her to sit up in the bathtub. As she lay back down she tried to make sense of what she had felt coming from her friend. It was an odd mixture of emotions but the emotion that seemed to be the strongest was guilt. ~ I think Data needs to take his own advice, ~ she thought, assuming the guilt he was feeling had to do with not being able to find the missing girls. She stayed in the bathtub until most of the bubbles had disappeared at which time she released the water, got out and quickly dried herself off with a towel. She made her way to her bedroom, slipping on her pajamas before moving to a small area where she performed the eeltot each evening. When she was finished, she slipped into bed feeling much more relaxed than she thought possible. She ordered the computer to turn off the lights and was soon sound asleep. Data, on the other hand, had been pacing in his quarters for almost twenty minutes trying to decide what to do. The idea of turning off his emotion chip entered his mind another fifty-three times before he finally decided that would be impossible. It was not Counselor Troi’s advice that guided his decision, it was the realization that his friends would want to know why he had turned it off. He knew the answer was not something he could admit. He knew he had to talk to someone about this but did not know who. He knew he could not confide in Geordi. He thought of speaking to Counselor Faalox regarding what he was feeling but concluded this too would not be a good idea. While he liked the new counselor, he wanted to speak with someone who was familiar with his emotional history. He finally decided he would contact Counselor Troi aboard the Titan if he was unable to deal with his predicament. Since he was unable to stop thinking about the events in Gemma’s quarters, Data thought it would be best to shut down his cognitive functions so he could not think about it. He lay on his bed, closed his eyes and began his dream program. Data’s dream started out pleasant enough. He, Geordi and Gemma were sitting around a table at the café from the holodeck program enjoying some morsalov ale. He turned his head to look at the waterfall and when he turned back, Geordi and Gemma were gone. He left the café trying to find them. He was walking down a quaint street that led to a field of wild tiltash. Data began to walk through the flowers when he saw a person lying in the middle of the field. He walked quickly to this person discovering it was Gemma. She was nude except for portions of her body that were covered by tiny bubbles. Gemma turned to Data and smiled. She held out her hand, which Data accepted immediately, and pulled him down on top of her. She kissed him softly before whispering, “By the light of Ordarin, you are wonderful, Data.” Data was overcome by his emotions. He pressed his lips to hers, kissing her with a passion he had never known. He ran his tongue gently over her lips until she opened her mouth, bringing her tongue to his in a sensuous duel. After several minutes, Data moved his kisses down her neck, following those alluring spots to see where they would take him. “Oh, Data,” Gemma moaned. “Oh, Data.” He continued his exploration until he heard his name again. “Oh, Data!” the voice said in disgust. Data turned to see Geordi looking down on him. Data bolted upright in his bed. He was horrified by the look on his best friend’s face in the dream. It was a combination of anger and betrayal. The guilt Data was trying to suppress returned tenfold. He moved quickly to his computer terminal and sent a communication to Counselor Troi pleading for her to contact him. He needed to talk to her as soon as possible. Data returned to his bed, deciding to give his dream program another chance this night. He closed his eyes and once again began to dream. This dream started out very different from his first. He and Gemma were performing a recital together. The music being created by the joining of his violin and her ooblet was magical. Data closed his eyes and was swept away. When the music stopped, he opened his eyes to find he was alone with Gemma in his quarters. He put his violin on a table and rested the ooblet against a wall before pulling Gemma up from her chair. She was wearing the dress she had worn to Data’s recital so when he wrapped his arms around her he could feel her silky skin. He gently caressed the spots that ran along her hairline completely fascinated by the pattern before kissing her passionately. He started to undo her dress as their kiss continued. Data once again bolted upright. This time it was not the dream that awoke him, it was the computer notifying him of a subspace communication from Deanna Troi. He was glad the counselor had gotten back to him so quickly. It was not the two dreams that made him realize how much he needed to speak to her, it was the erection that threatened to tear through his uniform pants that emphasized the point. Data sat down in front of his computer and opened the transmission. The lovely face of Deanna Troi greeted him with great warmth. “Data, I’ve missed you. I- Data, what’s wrong?” The look of concern that took over Deanna’s features caused Data to realize just how hard even this was going to be. “I have missed you as well, Counselor. I apologize for calling you in this manner, but I require advice.” Data paused here to sigh deeply. “It would seem my reintroduction to emotions has caused me to become a betrayer of my best friend.” “Geordi?” she asked, and shook her head. “Even without emotions, Data, you’ve always tended towards exaggeration. Tell me what’s happened.” She gave him an encouraging smile. “Are you familiar with the record of our new second officer?” Data asked. “She’s Kriosian, isn’t she?” Deanna asked. “Yes. Empathic, but not a metamorph like Kamala. Her name is Gemma Corazon. She is a gifted sketch artist, plays an instrument called an ooblet and is quite talented. She is personable, and an accomplished officer who has already impressed the captain and I with her abilities.” Data stopped, sighing again. “Sounds like you’re quite taken with her, Data.” Deanna smiled at him, wondering why he seemed so troubled by that. “Yes, that is my betrayal.” Data could no longer bring himself to face the counselor’s image. He turned away, ashamed. “What do you mean?” Suddenly, Deanna remembered Data had said he betrayed Geordi. The situation became painfully clear. “Is Geordi seeing her? Has he told you he wants to ask her out?” “They are dating.” Data slapped the surface of his desk, but not hard enough to damage it. “Dammit!” he swore as his hand made contact. “I wish Q had not repaired the emotion chip. I would not have become...like Lore if he had not.” “Data!” Deanna admonished him. “You’re not like Lore just because you find yourself attracted to someone who Geordi also finds attractive. Did you call me to say that you intend to have this woman without concern for Geordi’s feeling?” she asked, sharply. “No, I wish a way to be rid of these feelings. I have tried not to feel for her as I do. Now I am even dreaming of her and these feelings are growing.” He looked at the screen with pleading eyes. “Help me.” The expression on Data’s sweet face, so desperate, made Deanna want to hop a shuttle and race across the quadrant just to take her friend into her arms and comfort him. Sadly, all she had to tell him would not help. “Unfortunately, Data, we can’t rationalize who we are attracted to. There are many things that are factors, but ultimately, our hearts choose and our heads have little choice in the matter. The rest of the bad news is that I have experience in situations like this. It’s one of the rare instances where honesty is not the best policy. If you tell Geordi what you feel, no matter how you tell him, it will effect his relationship with you and Gemma. Telling Gemma could result in an even more disastrous outcome.” She now sighed, looking equally as glum as Data. “I wish I had better advice, Data. The best I can do is to tell you to avoid her in social situations as much as you can without damaging your relationship with Geordi and call me anytime you want to talk. I’ll always be here for you, Data. I’m sorry I can’t offer you a better solution.” Data nodded his understanding. He asked her how things were aboard the Titan and they chatted for several minutes before signing off. Unable to silence his emotions, Data decided to busy himself as much a possible. He called up all the ship’s library records on Kriosian musical artists and listened to seven different pieces of music at the same time. He also tried to find clues to where the slave traders were hiding and how they were covering their tracks so well. When Data arrived on the bridge at 0545, he was surprised to see Gemma already at work at Science Station One. When they first started this mission, Gemma requested that a directive be issued to all Federation ships in the sector to scan all non-Federation ships they encountered and transmit their daily sensor logs to the Enterprise by 0530. She was now busy reviewing the previous day’s information trying to find something, anything that would lead to the slavers. “There were fourteen more abductions last night,” she told Data before he had a chance to ask for an update. “Commander, I could really use your help in going over these logs. Maybe a second set of eyes...” “I would be happy to assist,” Data assured her. “Thank you. If you don’t mind, I thought we could go over everything in the briefing room,” Gemma suggested. When Data agreed, she ordered the computer to transfer the information there. They were studying the scans of various ships when Gemma noticed something odd. “There are fifteen ships that have entered and left orbit of each planet during the time frame of the abductions. This transport ship, the Evorez, entered orbit around Treiet III at 2100 and left at 0100. It was scanned by the Shi'Kahr when it arrived and by the Nobel when it left. The scans are identical.” “Computer, display all scans of the Evorez taken over the past one hundred twenty hours,” Data ordered. Data quickly analyzed the ten scans that had been recorded. “All the scans are identical. That is highly unusual in any case but even more so for a transport ship.” “Computer, what planets has the Evorez been known to have orbited in the past thirty days?” Gemma ordered. A few moments later the computer supplied a list of planets. “Computer, cross-reference any reported abductions of young females from these planets with the time the Evorez was in orbit.” “I believe it is time to report our findings to the captain,” Data said as the information appeared on the view screen. He tapped his comm badge requesting Captain Picard join them in the briefing room. Upon his arrival, Data reported on their findings regarding the Evorez. “Number One, issue an alert to all Starfleet vessels in the sector to report any sightings of the Evorez since 0100 and to begin discreet scans of their assigned patrol areas for any sign of the ship. Commander, begin scanning the area for their warp signature.” The three officers returned to the bridge. Data transmitted the alert while Gemma returned to her station to begin scanning the area. It took three hours, but since the warp signature had been included in Data’s alert, finally a call came. It was from the captain of a supply ship that had located a warp trail that was several hours old, but it matched the warp signature they were looking for. The Enterprise headed in that direction at warp seven. Gemma and Data worked side by side at Science One and Two looking for signs of the trail. Once it was found, they extrapolated a probable heading, following the trail residue and pulling up the information on the inhabited planets in this area. “I’d say Rayus II or IV would be our best bets,” Gemma said with a sigh. “Rayus IV is a member of the Federation, but Rayus II is still under the protection of the Prime Directive. The indigenous population is over three million and are pre-industrial, but they are humanoid.” “Opinion, Number One?” Picard asked Data. “Rayus II would offer the easier of the two targets.” “I agree,” added Gemma. Worf nodded his concurrence, but also added an angry growl. “Helm, set course to the Rayus System, warp eight.” “Course and speed locked in, Captain,” the helmsman responded a moment later. “Engage.” While they were en route, there was a briefing on the actions to be taken once they got there. “If they have abducted girls from Rayus II, what will we do with them, sir?” Gemma asked. It was Dr. Selar who answered. “If their brains are similar to that of most humanoids, erasing their short term memories should not pose any difficulty.” “And if not?’ Gemma asked. “We will have to deal with that if necessary. Whatever happens, if we find them, they will be in better hands than they are now.” Data knew how much this whole situation upset Gemma, so he said this as gently as possible. “Right,” Geordi added. “We have to shut these guys down, permanently. “It is a disappointment that with the presence of the hostages, we cannot simply blow them out of space.” Worf hissed. “Agreed,” Data mumbled, glancing at the disconcerted expression on Gemma’s face. This comment raised eyebrows all around the table, except for Worf, who nodded with approval and Gemma who seemed to understand his motivation and gave him a small smile. The Enterprise reached the Rayus System in less than an hour. As they slowed to full impulse speed, Gemma began to scan the system for any sign of the Evorez. “Captain, there is a ship in orbit around Rayus II. Its transponder code matches that of the Evorez,” Gemma reported. “Helm, take us into orbit of Rayus II,” Picard ordered. “Mr. Worf, lock the tractor beam on the Evorez as soon as we are within range.” “Aye, sir,” Worf responded. “The Evorez will be in range in fifteen seconds.” Worf paused. “Tractor beam locked on, sir, and we are being hailed.” “On screen, Mr. Worf.” Picard was greeted by an angry Zibalian. “I’m Captain Helot of the Evorez. What is the meaning of this? Release us immediately!” “I am Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation Starship, Enterprise,” Picard announced. “I don’t care who you are. Release us!” the Zibalian shouted. “We are investigating the abduction of several young women from this sector and the Evorez has been present at each effected planet during the time of the abductions. Would you care to explain this?” Picard moved next to Gemma. “It’s a coincidence, Captain. I assure you we had nothing to do with any abductions,” Helot proclaimed. “Sir,” Gemma spoke softly. Picard turned to Worf giving him the sign to mute the transmission. “Go ahead, Commander.” “I am detecting fifteen Zibalian lifesigns however the presence of a dampening field in the Evorez’s forward hold is preventing me from doing a complete scan of the ship...and I’m sure you don’t need an empath to tell you this but he is lying” Gemma reported. Picard motioned to Worf to resume transmission. “Captain Helot, prepared to be boarded. Picard out.” Picard then turned to Data. “Prepare an armed boarding party.” “Aye, sir,” Data responded. “Commander Corazon, Mr. Worf, you are with me.” Three teams of eight were set to beam aboard different locations of the Evorez. Data’s team would take control of the bridge, Gemma’s team would take Engineering while Worf’s team would take the area of the forward hold. The Zibalians, realizing they were greatly outgunned, offered no resistance and were taken in to custody immediately. When the forward hold was opened, Mr. Worf’s team was met by fifty very scared young women. “Do not be afraid. I am Lieutenant Commander Worf of the Federation Starship Enterprise. We are here to take you home. Please, come with me.” The Zibalians were transported directly to the brig before the women were transported to the Enterprise. They were brought to a large meeting room where Captain Picard spoke to them briefly. Gemma and Data then began to speak to each woman in order to identify her and what planet she was from. Dr. Selar and a medical team were also on hand to ensure any injuries or illnesses were treated. It took some time to sort the women out, take their statements and then return them each to their home planets. Meanwhile Gemma and Geordi worked at downloading as much information as they could from the Zibalian’s computers about those women already sold. There was a long list of buyers, but two other smaller ships where reassigned to help the Enterprise return these girls to their families. While this was being accomplished, Gemma had her third date with Geordi. They had a little holodeck excursion together. They went to a recreation of the Bahamas on Earth and enjoyed lots of seafood and fruity drinks. They ended the evening with a walk along the beach. While Geordi enjoyed the evening, he found his nervousness around women returning during the stroll along the water’s edge. He could not think of anything to say and the silence between them stretched on for a very long time. There had been moments like this during dinner, but each time Gemma had thought of something to say and the tension had been broken. ~ Stay cool, stay focused. You like her and she likes you. Don’t blow it, ~ Geordi pleaded with himself. Gemma looked over at him and smiled. “Sometimes it’s nice to just have a quiet walk and relax. I’ve been having trouble relaxing lately with thoughts of what those poor abducted girls have been going through.” She looked out over the water, smiling at the reflection of the sun on the surface. “Data’s been worried about me and trying to help me relax at night...well, he did one night.” She looked at Geordi. “You have a very special best friend.” Geordi grinned. “I couldn’t ask for a better friend. It was so hard to lose him. I think I was in shock for over a week. I couldn’t even cry because I kept thinking he’d come walking through a door in the next minute. It was the first time in my life I was ecstatic to see Q. I’d do anything for Data and I know he’d do the same for me.” He did not mean to sound so melancholy, but what came after the shock had been even worse. “He’s alive, Geordi. He’s a treasure you found again,” Gemma reassured him. Geordi looked over at Gemma giving her an unsettled look. “What did you say?” Gemma had planned her party for the following day, but she asked Data and Geordi to have dinner with her in her quarters the night before to get them to help with some of the things she would need. She had requested three cooking burners, so the men came to her door bringing them. “Wonderful,” Gemma said as she welcomed them in. As Geordi entered, Gemma pulled his arm to give him a quick peck on the lips and as Data followed behind, she pulled him over for a peck on the cheek. “My heroes, right?” she said, with a questioning look directed at Data. He was still trying to overcome his emotional reaction to her kiss, but did manage to nod. Gemma led them over to a very long table where she intended to cook and serve the food the next day. She had added a statuette of Ordarin and other religious symbols. There were also flowers and more plants from her home world. Gemma showed them both the outfit she would be wearing and Data had to suppress a gulp. It was a formfitting bodysuit that had lines of little cutouts that ran all the way down. “Why?” Geordi asked, noting the cutouts. “We call our markings the Tears of Howniya. She blessed us with consciousness with her tears and those tears left a mark as they flowed down our bodies. This shows the marks of love from her and all the gods for us. We wear this so our love is shown and it reminds us to show love for those special people who we have been blessed to know.” Both Geordi and Data were moved by her words. “Now, I have some food I want you to try and then I have something special for you, Data.” Before Data could ask, both he and Geordi had their mouths filled with some of her native cuisine. Both enjoyed the food and Geordi was given three more drinks to try that did not turn his stomach. “Okay, Gemma. Data is dying of curiosity and I want to know too, what do you have for him?” Geordi asked, patting his friend on the back, with affection. “Oh, let me get it,” Gemma hopped up from her seat and rushed to her bedroom. She came back out a moment later hiding something behind her back. She came over to Data and pulled out a small stack of paper. “It’s the sheet music you asked for Data. I was hoping you could practice them a bit tonight. This first one is a duet for the ooblet and tatteen but I think the violin would sound wonderful. Would you bring yours tomorrow and play this piece with me?” “Of course, Gemma. I would consider it a honor to play a duet with you,” Data smiled. “Thank you for the sheet music.” Gemma tested four different desserts on her guinea pigs. Geordi had preferred the first two offered whereas Data had enjoyed all four. In fact, Data had yet to find anything he disliked about Krios. He greatly enjoyed the food, drink, music and sights of this planet that Gemma had introduced to him. He was however still struggling a great deal with his emotions regarding one specific Kriosian. Data stayed for another hour helping test the food and equipment for the party before leaving for his quarters. He was unsure how he was going to make it through the party the next evening with Gemma dressed in that amazing bodysuit. He had taken Deanna Troi’s advice to avoid social gatherings if possible however this was one social gathering he could not miss. He sighed as he entered his quarters, resigned to the fact he would have to control his emotions the next evening. He also hoped Gemma would not drop her empathic shield over the course of the evening. At least this night, he had something to occupy his mind. He picked up his violin and music stand and began to look over the sheet music Gemma had given him. On the piece he would be playing with Gemma, he had the computer supply the ooblet’s part. He spent the night playing each piece of music. He could not help but be struck by the beauty of it. Geordi only stayed for another thirty minutes after Data left. The awkwardness he had felt during their last date returned. Gemma lowered her shield when Geordi kissed her goodnight. She could sense a number of emotions from him but not the ones she would expect from someone who wanted to continue a relationship. She smiled at Geordi as he left but she had a feeling the next time she said good night to him the circumstances would be different. The next day was very busy for Gemma as she made sure all of the smallest details were taken care of. She had been in contact with her mother who went over a checklist of things to do and there was only one thing Gemma still had left – cook but that would have to wait until just before her guests were to arrive. She decided to have another bubble bath so she could relax. ~ Thank you for introducing me to this luxury, Data, ~ she thought. Once Gemma was dressed, she began to prepare the feast she had planned for her friends. She finished the second last dish when the door chimes rang announcing her first guest. “Data, come in. Thank you for bringing your violin. What did you think of the sheet music I gave you?” Gemma asked warily. “I played all the pieces last night. They are very beautiful,” Data smiled graciously. Before Gemma could respond the door chimes rang again. Data sighed with relief that he would no longer be alone with her. She looked even more amazing in the bodysuit than he had imagined. Gemma welcomed Geordi and Worf to the gathering. Faalox arrived next, followed by the final guest, Captain Picard. The only thing wrong with her turning to greet the others was this now allowed Data a view of the Tears of Howniya that could be seen running down the left and right of her backside as well. Data was unable to decide which view was more alluring and thinking about it flooded him with more guilt. Gemma showed her guests to the table where many of the dishes were already prepared. The final one she prepared before them. The name of the dish translated to “dew of the morning” and was a hot fruit dish that was traditionally served to welcome returning or new friends. Gemma said the prayer of joining over the food and then everyone dug in. The captain ate with curiosity, Geordi enjoyed the dishes he had liked the day before while Faalox sampled each, nodding and asking questions as she did. Data and Worf both seemed to eat like starving men, although Data showed a little more reserve than Worf. Gemma told the story of creation from her planet, how the gods had tried in vain separately to create children to love and take care of, but each had failed. Finally, Howniya had called out to all the gods who wished to have children to love that they should all come together, combining their gifts. The others held back at first, but when Howniya began crying, her tears moved them and they all joined with her completely. As her tears washed over the lifeless bodies the gods had fashioned from the soil, their combined love flowed over them in her tears and awakened the newborn children, bringing joy to the gods and life to their children. All at the gathering were moved by Gemma’s telling and by the passion in how she told it. She had made the meal buffet style so people could mingle and she would have the chance to speak to everyone. But she found Data at her side most of the evening. They bantered back and forth with sayings that just happened to fit in with whatever they or another person they were speaking with happened to be saying. It caused everyone to laugh at their antics. Picard and Faalox moved to speak with Geordi and discuss some of the new things they had learned about the Kriosian culture. As they spoke, they heard Data, Gemma and Worf laughing, but Gemma and Data were louder. “I had noted some tension between Data and Gemma when she first came aboard,” Picard noted. “I’m relieved to see that has disappeared.” “Yeah, they buried the hatchet a while back,” Geordi informed them. “I’m glad too, it had me worried for a while” “Indeed,” Faalox agreed, looking over at the two in question. “The roles of the first and second officers are vital to the efficiency of a smooth running ship. If there is tension between them it could affect the morale of the entire crew. But I don’t think we need worry now. I see quite a fire in Commander Data’s eyes when he looks at the young lady. He tries very hard to hide it, but she will figure it out eventually.” The new counselor gave one of her huge smiles and moved back to the food table to sample some more. Neither the captain nor the counselor seemed to notice just how stunned all that made Geordi. Data and Gemma played the duet after the meal concluded. Gemma introduced the piece, noting the composer and how it was believed the gods had blessed her with her wonderful talent. The two musicians sat and, with the first notes, all in the room were touched by the power of the music. When the piece ended, the three other guests needed a moment for the trance the music had woven around them to dissipate before they all jumped to their feet applauding with great emotion. The two musicians rose to take their bows and then Gemma turned to Data, bowing slightly and looking very moved herself, and just smiled at him, whispering two words. “Oh, Data.” The images from Data’s dream came crashing back on him and he found it hard to not lean over and kiss her right there and then. Geordi seemed to notice this odd reaction from his friend and recognized it as attraction. Data tried to center himself but was only able to nod at Gemma, not trusting himself to move or speak more than that. The party broke up soon after. Data and Geordi stayed to help her clean up and Data excused himself once that was done, believing he should leave Geordi and Gemma with time alone. He was right, but not in the way he thought. Geordi led her to one of the couches and looked at her with a serious expression. But before he could open his mouth, Gemma shook her head. “I know you don’t want to say it, but you’re right. You’re dear to me and I know you care for me too, but just not in that way. Please say we can still be good friends, Geordi. I don’t want to lose that.” Geordi sighed to release the tension that had been building within him and smiled. “I don’t want to give you up as a friend for the world, Gemma.” They shared a warm hug and chatted for a few minutes before Geordi told her goodnight. Heading for Data’s quarters, he had one more thing to do before he called it a night. Tell his best friend, who was denying his feeling for Gemma, that he no longer had to. Geordi stood outside Data’s quarters for a moment before ringing the door chimes. Data was surprised to see it was his best friend who rang for admittance. “Geordi, what are you doing here? I thought you would be spending time with Gemma.” Data was worried by the serious look on his friend’s face. ~ What if Geordi knows how I feel and wants to end our friendship? ~ The thoughts were racing through his head at a speed no human could possibly comprehend. “I wanted to talk to you, Data, about Gemma.” Geordi moved to sit down on Data’s couch. Data did not move for seventeen seconds as a feeling of dread overtook him. It was not until Geordi called for him to sit that Data broke out of his trance-like state. “I do not understand, Geordi. Why do you wish to talk to me about Gemma?” Data asked nervously. “I wanted to let you know that she and I...well, we aren’t dating any longer.” He paused for a moment before continuing, “Gemma and I spoke after you left and we agreed that we both care for each other but as friends, nothing more.” “I am sorry, Geordi.” “Don’t be, Data. It’s okay, I’m okay,” Geordi reassured him. “There is something else I wanted to talk to you about. You’re attracted to Gemma, aren’t you?” Data stared back at Geordi absolutely horrified by his friend’s words. “Geordi, I-I would never betray you or our friendship,” he sputtered once he regained his ability to speak. “Whoa, I know you wouldn’t and you haven’t. I don’t know how long you’ve been holding in your feelings for Gemma, Data. I do know that during the time Gemma and I were seeing each other you didn’t do anything that would have jeopardized our friendship. In fact, I think our friendship is even stronger now. You buried your feelings for her because you wanted me to be happy,” Geordi smiled. “Your happiness is very important to me, Geordi. You are correct in your assessment of my feelings for Gemma. However, if my feelings for her played any part in your decision to end your relationship I will not be able to forgive myself.” “Data, I give you my word that only my feelings influenced my decision. I think she and I both knew after our last date the spark wasn’t there but it wasn’t until tonight that I realized how you felt. If it hadn’t been for something Faalox said I might still be in the dark,” he grinned. “Faalox?” “Yes, it would appear our new counselor is very good at reading people. She said she had noticed a fire in your eyes when you looked at Gemma.” “Geordi, I do not know what to say,” Data was again at a loss for words. “You don’t have to say anything. Let me do the talking. I want you to ask Gemma out on a date.” Geordi could tell from the confused look on his friend’s face that he needed to elaborate. “I don’t want you to deny your feelings because you think it will hurt me if you start seeing Gemma. Your happiness is important to me too, Data, and it would really hurt me if you turned your back at a chance for happiness because of me. Now, tell me you will ask Gemma for a date.” “I will, Geordi,” Data smiled. “I am very fortunate to have you as my best friend.” “So am I, Data,” Geordi agreed. “I better get going. Early day tomorrow. See ya later, Data.” “Good night, Geordi, and thank you.” Data was once again pacing his quarters, but this time his anxiety was quite different. While he was sorry Gemma and Geordi had ended their association, he was very glad they would still be friends. Still, while he was left free to pursue a relationship with Gemma, Data was a nervous wreck over what to say to her, how to say it and that her answer, no matter what he said, could be no. During his next duty shift, Data led an away team down on Igtorianus’ Dream, an ill-named planet that seemed to be overrun with outlaws of every kind. Gemma, Worf and Lieutenant Cooper assisted in the rescue of fifteen more of the abducted women. Sadly, they found the bodies of three who had been killed by “customers” and five more from poor treatment by their captors and the abhorrent living conditions. Gemma was very shaken when they found the bodies. Seeing her distress, as they were gathering the other women into formation for beam out, Data came over and put a hand on her shoulder. When she looked up him, he gave her a weak smile. “We are making a difference here, Gemma. Stay focused, Commander. We have a duty to perform.” He nodded at her when she seemed to come out of her gray cloud. “Aye, sir.” Gemma nodded and helped another girl into position. It took another week until the true leaders of this operation were uncovered, but once they were, all the senior staff slept better, except Data. Geordi asked him each morning if he had asked Gemma out for a real date, but each time Data looked embarrassed and shook his head. “I cannot. What if her answer is to decline?” Data looked heartbroken as he said this. Finally Geordi came over to his friend and decided it was time to light a fire under him. “Data, what if she would have said yes, but you waited so long, someone else asks her first?” Data’s eyes went wide in horror, “I will ask her today,” he assured his friend. “Come on, Data. Let’s go to work,” Geordi said, heading for Data’s door. Just before they parted, Geordi took his best friend by the shoulders and looked him in the eyes. “You’re gonna do fine, Data. Now ask her today,” Geordi urged him. Data nodded and tried to smile, but he was very nervous. As the android headed for the bridge, he had a million thoughts running through his head. Gemma was already at ops when he arrived. Her hair was braided back, something Data had not seen her do before. The trail of tears that descended the sides of her neck was visible. He decided this style was much more appealing than when she just had the front of her hair pulled back in a clip. It was not easy, but Data managed to keep his mind on his duties during his shift, but once it was over, he waited for Gemma to head to the lift. She stopped to speak with Lieutenant Copper and while Data did not intend to, he found himself watching and listening to them. They chatted about whether the performance of the new console was measuring up and other things that could be considered ship’s business, but during their entire conversation, they smiled and laughed. A fear gripped Data so tightly, he decided he had to get off the bridge and away from the two of them this very minute. Cursing himself in one hundred and seventy-two languages, Data entered the lift, wondering if he should try and find Geordi or call Counselor Troi. When he turned around to face the door of the lift, he came face to face with Gemma. And she had a very worried expression on her face. “Pardon me, Gemma, I did not notice you entering the lift.” Data felt frozen with dread. He tried to get a lock on his thundering emotions, but they would not quiet. “Deck two?” he asked, trying to sound normal. She gave a nod and he ordered the lift into motion. “Computer, halt,” Gemma ordered a second later. Still staring at him in a way that made Data very uncomfortable, she stepped closer. “Data, I told you that I have trouble blocking out very strong emotions. I know there’s something you want to ask me, ask now.” Data felt as though in that moment he would rather face having to fire at the thalaron intermix chamber again than be forced into this, but he had no choice. He opened his mouth, but his voice simulator must have been malfunctioning, since he could not convince anything to come out. After the third time he had done this and still no words came out, Gemma shook her head at him, but oddly she smiled. Taking another step closer to him, bringing her too close, she leaned closer and to Data’s astonishment, she kissed him on the cheek. It was a very slow and tender kiss. Emotions flooded Data once again and this time even Data had trouble sorting them all out. He closed his eyes and let the feel of her soft lips touching his cheek wash him away. It was the most wonderful thing he had ever felt. He was so lost in this he almost missed the fact she had moved slightly and was now whispering in his ear. “Ask me now, Data,” she told him. “Gemma, will you go on a date with me?” he finally managed to whisper back. Pulling back, looking him in the eyes and smiling brightly, Gemma nodded. “Computer, resume.” When the lift doors opened, Data walked with Gemma to her quarters. “Regarding our date, would you be available to have dinner with me this evening, Gemma?” Data asked hopefully. Gemma thought for a moment before replying with a grin, “There's no time like the present, except I do need time to change though.” “I could return at 1730 if that is acceptable.” “I’ll see you then,” she smiled as she entered her quarters. Data felt as if he were walking on air as he headed to his quarters. He fed Spot before heading for his closet, trying to decide what he should wear for dinner. He pulled out a pair of pants and shirt that he thought were not too dressy but not casual either. After changing, Data made his way to the living room area when a flash of light greeted him. “Ah Data, all dressed for your date, hmmm?” Q grinned. “That is correct, Q,” Data replied. “Data, I have come to you now so I can confess my sin.” Q frowned although he did not sound apologetic. “I lied.” “Lied? I do not understand?” Data answered. “Well, maybe not lied but stretched the truth,” he offered. “Q, please explain.” “When I brought you back to the Enterprise, I told you I had placed a treasure on board when I really hadn’t,” Q explained nonchalantly. “Are you saying that Gemma is not my treasure?” Data was shocked by what Q had said. “No, Data, I’m not saying that. I’m only saying that I did not place her on board the Enterprise. You recommended Miss Corazon long before I became involved in things. I told you what I did so you would be open to the possibilities of romance. I had no idea you would fall for your replacement although it is rather ironic in a way,” Q grinned. “How so?” Data asked. “Her name, Data. Ask her what her name means,” Q laughed. “Now I really must be going. I have a play date with some old friends. Bye now.” Q vanished in his customary flash of light leaving Data to think over what had just happened. Data waited until exactly 1730 to ring Gemma’s door chime. When the door slid open, Gemma stood before him, dressed in a cropped beaded jacket and pants with a matching shell, all made of silk in a terracotta color. Her hair was pulled all the way up, revealing the pigmentation that Data found so alluring. She looked beautiful. “You look so handsome, Data,” Gemma commented with a glowing smile. “I’ve never seen you out of uniform before.” Data grinned. He was happy he had chosen the linen pants and silk shirt to wear. He offered Gemma his arm. “If you are ready?” “I am. Let’s go.” This was one of the few times in his life that Data had no idea who else came into the lounge, Gemma was all he could see. They talked of music, art, poetry, and more Earth sayings. He found himself laughing so often he was sure he was disturbing some of the other diners, but Data could not help himself. He discovered Gemma’s silly side and she seemed to have found a way to bring his back out again. Data was sure the last time he had been this foolish he had been pretending his tricorder could talk. He told her about that and she laughed so hard she almost fell out of her chair. This caused Data to laugh again and kept the continuous giggles the two had been beset with going. “We have to stop this, Data. I can’t breath,” Gemma said between chuckles. “Do you wish me to show you how?” he said in a comical voice. Suddenly Data looked around at the others in the room and seemed embarrassed. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “I am enjoying this evening more than I have any other, but I have behaved and caused you to behave rather foolishly and we are the first and second officers of this ship.” Gemma reached across the table for Data’s hand. “I’m having a wonderful time too, and as an empath, I can tell you that no one here thinks less of either of us for the display we’ve put on,” she did blush when she said this. “As far as what they think of me, I’ve impressed a few by getting the reserved Commander Data to loosen up - a lot.” She giggled again. “But if you want to call it an evening, I understand.” Data put his hand over their two. “No, I do not wish it. Since we are finished with dinner or were forty-seven minutes ago...” he chuckled here. “Perhaps we could go to the holodeck for a little while?” he asked, his eyes taking on that sweet pleading expression he had. “Can anyone say no to you when you look at them like that? That expression could be a dangerous weapon if wielded properly. Let’s go.” Gemma grinned at him. Arm in arm, Data and Gemma walked to the holodeck and Data loaded a program he thought would be relaxing. It was a beautiful night by an ocean shore. The sky was filled with stars and there was a cool breeze coming off the water. The sound of the waves was almost hypnotic but the best part was just about to begin. Data led Gemma to a blanket far enough away from the waves that they would remain dry. Her expression was one of uncertainty when she saw the blanket. “I do not wish to sit in the sand,” he explained, wrinkling his nose at the thought. She laughed and allowed him to help her take a seat. He sat beside her and told her to look in a certain area of the sky. A moment later it began. It was a meteor shower and it was beautiful. “On Earth they used to refer to them as shooting stars,” Data explained. “It’s fantastic, Data.” She could not take her eyes off the show. After a few minutes, Gemma pulled her knees up to her body and squeezed them to her. “Are you cold?” Data asked, concerned. “Just a little. But the breeze is wonderful.” She turned to look at him and smile. Wondering if she would allow him, Data moved closer. Coming up from behind her, he sat bringing his arms around her and his knees up on either side of her. To his delight, Gemma leaned into him, enjoying his warmth. They sat like this for nineteen minutes of bliss. Data hated to spoil this with words, but Q’s question was burning in his mind and now was the perfect time to ask. “Gemma?” “Yes, Data?” she asked, softly. “What does your name mean?” She pulled his arms tighter around her as the breeze kicked up briefly and Data reveled in this. “I was told by my roommate at the Academy that in the Earth language French, Gemma means jewel and Corazon is Spanish for heart.” She laughed. “Jewel of the heart,” Data mused. “Yes but in my language it means something much different.” “And that is?” Data prompted. “Second chance.” “You have a beautiful name no matter what the language although I believe I prefer the Kriosian translation to that of the Earth one,” he concluded. “You do? I’m curious why you do?” she inquired. “When I look at you I am reminded of how lucky I am to have been given a second chance by Q. I will be forever grateful to him for everything he has done for me,” Data related. “Oh Data, that’s beautiful,” she sighed. “Your father was human, wasn’t he?” “Yes, he was.” “What does Data mean to humans?” “One definition is factual information, as measurements or statistics, used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation. Nothing romantic I am afraid.” “Don’t be so sure. The Kriosian translation of your name is quite romantic,” she smiled. “What does it mean?” he questioned. He found it difficult to believe his name could mean something romantic in any language. “In our language, it means beloved.” Data leaned his head forward and whispered in her ear, “I much prefer that translation. I have discovered much about Krios since meeting you and everything I have learned has been wondrous.” They stayed in the holodeck for a further fifty-two minutes before reluctantly leaving. Data took Gemma’s hand in his as he walked her back to her quarters. They stood outside her door for another twelve minutes trying to say good night. Finally, Data raised his hand to gently caress her cheek. He then leaned forward kissing her gently on the lips. “Good night, Data,” she beamed. Data took Gemma’s hand in his, raised it to his lips, kissing the back of it softly. “Good night, Gemma.” Gemma stood transfixed in her doorway, watching Data slowly walk to his quarters, down the corridor. He looked back several times to wave at her and each time, Gemma waved back. She waited until he was out of sight before the spell was broken and she could move again. Walking back to her rooms, Gemma remembered to breathe again. In a way, she felt guilty. Her dates with Geordi had been the first she had gone on in quite a while, and they had been fun. However, when compared to what she experienced with Data on their date - just sitting with his arms around her, talking under the shooting stars - it had been magical. So much of the evening, Gemma felt so aware of him. Not just because he was holding her, or at the table with her, but his emotions, she had peeked a little and had been pleased by what she found. Data had been thinking about many things, just like he always was, and reacting to them all, but tonight his emotional reaction to her was much easier to pick out. He was radiating them the strongest, and each one Gemma knew involved her was very flattering. It was a very odd feeling for her that overcame her now. She was more relaxed than she had ever been in her life, yet she felt energized and was sure sleep would be impossible tonight. She was just too happy. Finally she decided to record her thoughts about Data in her personal log and then take a nice bubble bath. This helped her to relax, even if she could not get Data out of her mind, not that she was trying very hard. The eeltot seemed to be intensely effective tonight, stemming from her heightened peace of mind, no doubt. She was near euphoria when she settled into bed. Gemma’s dreams seemed to reflect her happiness, much to her delight. Geordi was eager to see Data in the morning. While his friend had not told him about getting a date with Gemma, ship’s scuttlebutt had gotten to the chief engineer and Geordi had even seen the pair just before they left the lounge together. Geordi had been sure the two were blissfully unaware that anyone else was even in the room for most of their evening. He was a tiny, tiny bit jealous of this, but the look on Data’s face... Geordi met with Data in the lounge this morning. The android was uncharacteristically late. “Are you okay, Data?” Geordi asked when his friend sat down. Data looked very embarrassed. “I am sorry for my tardiness, I was painting. I wanted to get the star field just right before I departed. It took longer than I anticipated.” Geordi let go of his worry and sighed. “Is there going to be anything in the star field, Data?” “Nothing but shooting stars in the field, but under it will be Gemma...and me.” Data looked reluctant to say this as though he did not want to brag. Geordi gave him an easy smile. “I saw you two here last night. You both were laughing so hard I thought they’d be able to hear you back on Earth. I’m glad you finally asked her out, Data and I’m glad you had a good time, too.” A bright grin overtook Data’s face. “I did. Thank you, Geordi. I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate your understanding in this matter.” “I didn’t do anything, Data.” Geordi gave a little snorting kind of laugh. “All I did was get out of your way.” Geordi laughed, but saw that Data did not find it exactly funny. “Geordi, I-“ “Data, I’m sorry. That was a poor choice of words. Gemma and I just didn’t click, but you and she have. I’m happy for you, I promise.” “You are sure?” Data asked. “I’m positive. Now, tell me what you two did, the non-private stuff,” Geordi said with a grin. Data grinned too and told his friend about the wonderful evening he had shared with Gemma. Data was riding the turbolift to the bridge, trying to decide when it would be appropriate to ask Gemma for another date. It was Gemma’s turn to host poker night this evening. Data had offered to come early to help set up for the game. He decided that would also be a good opportunity to invite Gemma out again. As he walked out of the turbolift the captain stood up and called to Data to join him in his ready room. Data and Gemma exchanged a quick smile as Data walked across the bridge. “Well, Number One, we are on course to Starbase 54. We will be taking on a small delegation from the Federation Security Council and providing them transport to Deep Space Seven.” Picard handed Data a PADD. “Here is a list of the delegates and their staff as well as a list of their requests. Have quarters assigned and see to it that they have everything they require.” “Aye, sir.” “Also, I would like to have a reception in the lounge in honor of the delegates and I want you to plan it. We will be arriving at Starbase 54 in seventy-two hours and I would like the reception to start at 1800 that day.” Picard paused momentarily. “Mr. Data, I do have a personal request. I was hoping you and Commander Corazon would perform during the reception. A short recital would suffice.” “I will speak to Commander Corazon. I am sure she will be agreeable.” Data started to rise from his chair to leave the ready room. “One other thing, when you speak to Commander Corazon will you let her know that I will be able to attend the poker game this evening.” “Yes, sir.” When Data returned to the bridge, he called to Gemma, “Commander Corazon, please join me in the briefing room.” Gemma rose and followed Data. When the doors closed behind her, Data turned to her with a big smile on his face. “I did not have an opportunity to wish you a good morning. Good morning, Gemma,” Data grinned, with his eyes shining. “Good morning, Data,” Gemma laughed. “I do need to discuss some ship’s business with you,” he said, clearing the schoolboy grin from his face. “We will be taking on a delegation from the Federation Security Council. Captain Picard has asked me to plan a reception which will commence in seventy-five hours, twelve minutes,” Data informed her. “The captain has requested we perform a short recital at the reception.” “I’d be honored to perform with you again, Data,” Gemma smiled warmly. “I look forward to playing with you as well,” Data grinned. “I do have one other request, would you assist me with planning the reception?” “Of course. Hopefully we’ll be able to plan some time to rehearse together.” “Perhaps I could come to your quarters at 1530 so we can have a preliminary discussion on the planning before the poker game.” “Okay, Data. Would you like to have dinner with me too?” Gemma asked hopefully. “I would love to,” Data responded. “Also, Captain Picard informed me he will be attending the game this evening.” The two lingered in the briefing room talking about the night before for a few minutes before returning to the bridge. Data was looking forward to this evening and having dinner with Gemma. Once her shift was over, Gemma rushed to her quarters to change. Data would be there in thirty minutes and she knew he would not be late, so she had to hurry. She changed into a brown outfit and pulled her hair up. Her clothing was modest, but she knew Data liked her hair up from what she had been able to sense from him last night, so she did this for him. She was setting the table for dinner when Data rang at her door. Gemma blushed at her irresistible urge to grin uncontrollably. She just could not help herself when Data came near. She was delighted to see he too was grinning. “Hi, I thought you could replicate something special from Earth tonight, if you’d like, Data.” “I would like that and hello. I am curious. You have your hair arranged in the style you used last night again tonight, but before that evening you have always worn your hair loose once your duty shift ended. Is there a reason for this?” Gemma knew her blush was growing deeper. “I should have known that trying to sneak something like this past you was impossible. I wore it up because I could tell that you liked it that way last night.” Data looked stunned. “You changed your hair on my behalf?” “I was right, wasn’t I?” she brought a nervous hand to her neck. “You do like it, don’t you?” Data shook his head as though trying to dismiss his bewilderment. “I do, I am simply surprised you would change one of your normal routines in an attempt to please me.” He beamed brightly. “If I get that kind of reaction, I may have to do it again, as soon as I figure out something else that you like.” She shrugged, but grinned and Data laughed. “I like you as you are now, you have no need to change anything for me.” Gemma laughed. “Okay, I think we’ve flirted shamelessly with each other enough for now. Order dinner, let’s eat and discuss what we’re going to do for the reception.” Data nodded and moved to the replicator. He ordered an authentic spaghetti dinner with garlic bread and a salad. Two glasses of Merlot rounded off the meal. Gemma was impressed with his choice. She enjoyed the meal as they discussed the arrangements that would need to be made for the reception. They cleared the dishes from dinner and began to set up for the poker game. As Data got out the chips he had brought with him, Gemma went to her bedroom to pull out some sheet music that she wanted him to look over. “What do you think the captain’s interpretation of short is, Data? How many pieces?” she asked handing him the music for eight. Data considered this for only a moment, as he looked them over. “Pick your three favorite of these.” Gemma thought for a moment and pulled out the three she liked the best. “This will be our program,” he told her. “Do you want to practice some now since we have the time?” Gemma asked. “I will get my violin,” Data said, eagerly and with her nod he was off. Gemma had to laugh once he was gone. ~ He is just too precious for words, and to think, at first I thought he was so disagreeable. ~ Data returned a moment later and he and Gemma began practicing the first piece together. Captain Picard was the first to arrive. Upon gaining admittance to Gemma’s quarters, he was greeted by his first and second officers, instruments in hand. “I hope this means you have agreed to perform at the reception?” he asked. “Yes, sir. We are both looking forward to it,” Data smiled. “I’m a little early and I hate to interrupt your rehearsal time. Please continue,” Picard insisted. Gemma and Data started the piece they had been playing from the top. It was a very moving piece of music that told the story of Howniya. “That was absolutely wonderful,” Picard smiled once they finished. “The chemistry between the two of you is remarkable.” “Thank you, sir,” Gemma beamed. A moment later the door chimes rang as Worf, Geordi, Faalox and Dr. Selar arrived together. Mark Newcombe had been quite disappointed he had been unable to play that evening, especially since the captain was going to be attending, however he had the late shift in sickbay. Gemma put away her ooblet and found a safe place for Data’s violin as everyone took their places around the table. Captain Picard was the first dealer for the evening’s game. The game finally broke up at 2230 with no big winner although all the players had a very enjoyable evening. Soon Data and Gemma were alone as he stayed behind to help clean up. “Gemma, will you have dinner with me tomorrow evening?” Data asked. “I’d like that,” Gemma responded. “Did you want to continue planning the reception then?” “No, I wish to spend the evening with you,” Data admitted as he took her hand. “I like that even better,” she grinned. After they finished cleaning up, it was time for Data to return to his quarters. They stood by the door to Gemma’s quarters trying to say good night. Data was staring at Gemma, causing her to blush. “You are so beautiful.” Data gently cupped Gemma’s face with his hands and kissed her tenderly. “Good night.” As he walked down the corridor, Gemma again watched from her doorway as he left. “Data, wait,” she called out. She disappeared into her quarters before re-emerging with Data’s violin in hand. He took the violin from her and, taking advantage of the situation, gave her another gentle kiss before continuing to his quarters. Gemma walked back in her quarters, almost dizzy. He had kissed her twice, for a total of three kisses on the lips. She laughed at herself. Counting kisses like a schoolgirl at the age to twenty-seven was pitiful but she knew she was not going to stop. Deciding it was safe, Data put together a message for Deanna Troi and sent it off. He told her he had followed her advice and kept his mouth shut. Now, things had turned around and while Gemma and Geordi were still friends, Data was now dating her and they were to have their second date the next day. He sent the communication off and leaned back in his chair. Thinking of the lips that had pressed to his, he touched them, absently. ~ I have kissed her three times. I want to kiss her so many more. ~ A good deal of his shift the following day was spent planning the reception and seeing to the details. Gemma worked on room assignments and helped add spice to some of Data’s more grounded plans. They were only an hour away from their shift ending when Gemma looked up at him and asked, “So, what are we going to do on our date tonight, Data?” Data met her eyes and grinned. “A hike - in the holodeck, of course. I understand we will have a layover when we get to DS7. Perhaps we could visit the station together.” “I’d like that. Now tell me about this hike?” she sounded quite unsure about this idea. Three hours later when Data was placing a backpack on her and making sure her shoes were suitable for the terrain, Gemma was even less sure. “The safety protocols are in place, right?” she asked, looking at the jungle Data had called up. “Of course. I would never endanger your life and it takes two officers to override the protocols.” Data cinched her pack another notch and declared her ready. His pack was bigger, but he still had to make sure he did not lose it, so his was tightly secured too. The area was a steep mountainside and the temperature was warm. Gemma was hard pressed to keep up with Data, but when she lagged behind after tripping, but not falling, on a vine, Data took her hand. ~ Okay, so maybe this program isn’t so bad, ~ she decided. He let her rest after an hour of climbing, but only for five minutes. They crossed over even more rugged terrain in the next hour and Gemma told him she had to stop and catch her breath. She was drowning in sweat, her feet hurt, she was thirsty and she had no idea why Data had thought of this for their second date. He found them a flatter area for her to rest and helped her off with her pack. Bringing out her water bottle, he handed it to her. Gemma plopped down on the ground and sighed, wondering about Data and his choice. Data knelt down behind her, bringing a hand to each of her shoulders. Slowly he began to massage the kinks out of her muscles. Gemma sighed and allowed herself to slowly relax into his touch. She closed her eyes as he worked his way down her back. She was so relaxed, she did not even notice that Data had stopped and was moving. She opened her eyes to see him kneeling in front of her. He reached out and pushed some of her damp hair back. She felt bad that he now had her sweat on his fingers. “I’m a mess,” she said, looking embarrassed. “You are beautiful,” he corrected her. Leaning in, Data put his arms around her and pulled her against him. His kiss was still soft, but there was more to it this time. Looking into her eyes, he asked, “May I kiss you again?” “Yes,” she mouthed, with no breath left. He kissed her again, a little more forcefully. Again he pulled back. “May I kiss you once more?” “As many times as you like,” Gemma told him. Data smiled. “Never give an android that option,” he warned her with a smile, but pulled back to kiss her anyway. This time, Gemma let her arms wrap around him and squeeze him tightly. He did not stop this kiss, instead he deepened it. His tongue explored her mouth as Gemma marveled in the experience of it. She had only been kissed like this once before and it had not been like this. Nothing in her life had ever felt like this. “Do you feel rested?” he asked as he gently swept his fingers over her cheek. Gemma sighed and nodded. “Good. We have almost arrived at our destination.” Data stood, offered his hand to Gemma as she rose and then helped her put on her pack. The last portion of the hike was much more pleasant. A change in the terrain made it much easier to hike on but, more importantly, it allowed Data to hold Gemma’s hand as they walked. As they came over a slight ridge, Gemma’s breath caught as the beauty of the area became apparent. It was like an oasis on the side of a mountain, except instead of sand there was grass. The grassy area was small, approximately five square meters. It started gradually but ended abruptly at the edge of a massive cliff. In the distance, snowcapped mountains rose majestically out of a crystal clear ocean. “I did invite you for dinner this evening,” Data grinned. “Now it is time.” He removed Gemma’s pack before his own, opened it and pulled a large blanket from inside which he spread over a portion of the grass. He then began to set up a picnic dinner consisting of a number of breads, meats, cheeses, fruits and desserts from various planets. Finally he brought out a bottle of champagne and two fluted glasses. Gemma watched in awe as Data laid out all the wonderful looking food. There were some items she recognized but most were unfamiliar to her. He took her hand and led her to the blanket. Once they were seated, Data told Gemma what each item was and what planet it came from. He opened the champagne, pouring a glass for each of them. “Data, this is amazing,” Gemma beamed. “And the show has yet to start,” Data hinted. “You must try this.” Data leaned forward to feed Gemma a piece of one of the many cheeses he had brought. “It is Betazoid. Counselor Troi once told me that on Betazed it is customary to share this cheese with someone you hold dear.” Gemma smiled innocently, picked up a piece of the cheese and brought it to Data’s lips. “I like that custom.” As they ate the wonderful dinner Data had packed, they talked and laughed as they shared special, and some funny, stories from their lives. They also shared a number of sweet kisses throughout the special dinner. When they finished eating, Data cleared away the dishes before pouring them each another glass of champagne. He moved next to Gemma, slipped his arm around her and whispered in her ear, “It is about to start.” “You mean the sunset wasn't the show?” Gemma gasped. Watching the sun setting against the backdrop of the mountains and ocean had been stunning. She had no idea what could be more beautiful than that but then it started. A light show, similar to Earth’s aurora borealis, danced across the sky, reflecting off the water producing a breathtaking duet of light. Gemma was awestruck by the display. She had never seen anything like it before. When words finally returned to her all she could manage to articulate was a breathy “Oh Data!” As stunning as the light show was, Data found himself watching an even more beautiful display – Gemma’s reactions. The light show lasted for one hour thirty-two minutes. When it was over, Data repacked everything, took Gemma by the hand and led her towards the edge of the cliff. He grinned at her as they got to the very edge when suddenly the doors to the holodeck opened. As they exited, Data ordered the computer to end and save holodeck program Gemma2. The fact Data had created the program specifically for her made her smile even brighter. They passed by Data’s quarters first so he placed the packs inside before escorting Gemma to hers. As they stood outside her quarters, they stared into each other’s eyes as they held hands. After what seemed to be an eternity, Data leaned in to kiss her. As the kiss grew more passionate Data wrapped his arms around Gemma while her hands rested on Data’s waist. The sensations caused by the joining of their lips, the dancing of their tongues was intoxicating. The sound of the turbolift door opening shattered the magic of the moment, bringing to an end their kiss and their date. “Good night, Gemma,” Data whispered as he released her from his arms. “Good night.” She sighed as she softly caressed his cheek before stepping in to her quarters. |
