Chapter VIII: The Day After

The alarm chimes loudly as Anna’s eyes pry open. She groans and hits the snooze button, rolling on her side as dawn bathes her hotel room. Moments later the clock chimes again, louder than before. She mutters a few choice words and jumps into the shower, grumbling. All she wants is sleep—but Brandi’s expecting her to be at the wedding, and who is she to deny that?

She climbs into her sleek pink dress and runs out the door, tangled hair and all. The ride in the SuperCab is long and tedious. It gives her time to think, think about Brandi, think about the Vang...and her own near-brush with being taken herself. Luckily, the bride-to-be remembers nothing of what happened the previous evening. But Anna recalls it all too well. Ambivalent feelings rush to the fore. What if the creature was right? What if she did want to be taken?

She pushes the thought aside. She can mull it over back on the ship. If worst comes to worst she can always act out her fantasies in the privacy of her quarters...that is, if Vanessa’s not watching.

She coughs audibly.

“Are you sick, Passenger?” An automated voice responds. “Would you like to be dropped off at a medical facility?”

“No.” Anna reassures it. “I’m fine.”

The SuperCap careens through wide lanes and small city streets, navigating the road with ease. Anna remembers vehicles seeing vehicles on her homeworld when she was much younger. Their gleaming yellow facades as they rush through the metropolis, stopping only to relieve and pick up passengers. That a car could do all that without the assistance of a rider was unfathomable at that age. But that was before the Vang stole her family from her, before Captain Lee came to the rescue...

The vehicle comes to a stop at an old temple, it’s white pillars towering over the patrons filing in. Anna sneaks inside, and not a moment too soon. She spies Captain Lee and Nikki sitting side by side in their Sunday best. Vanessa too. But Caitlin is strangely absent—could it be the jet lag?

“Speak of the Devil.” Nikki grumbles as Anna takes her seat alongside them. “Sleep much?”

“Not as much as Caitlin. Is she still recovering from the long ride?”

“Something like that.” Nikki shoots back. “What’s up with that dress? You look like you’re going to a prom.”

“At least I don’t look like a slut.” Anna glances at Nikki’s too-short dress.

“Glad you’ve decided to join us.” Vanessa smiles.

The soon-to-be wedded couple arrive arm in arm, an angelic white shawl draped over Brandi’s shoulders as they walk down the aisle. A train of young virgins follow closely behind, their flowing white robes no less impressive as they carry the couple’s wedding rings and buckets of strange liquid with them. The blood-red concoction sloshes audibly as the virgins proceed slowly. Anna rolls her eyes.

“What is this, performance art?”

“Shhh.” Nikki elbows her. “It’s about to start.”

The crowd hushes as the couple huddles at the altar. Anna suppresses a yawn. The words drift in one ear and out the other as Anna struggles to listen to the priest’s cantations. She pretends to smile, glancing at her watch every so often. All she can think of is sleep.

Sleep sleep sleep sleep sleep.

A piercing cry jolts her awake as the couple exchange vows. The virgins strip their clothes and pour the buckets over their heads. The red substance glistens off their bodies as sunlight shines through pained glass. The newlyweds doff their clothes and embrace in a sensual kiss. Their moans and cries drift to the heavens as the congregrants look on. The lovemaking seems to last for minutes...hours...

Decades.

“Now if you excuse me, we’re going to get laid.” Nikki and the Captain excuse themselves.

Anna looks on, wondering how in the heavens a sacred ritual thousands of years old could become so...profane.

Over glasses of mead, Anna tries to make sense of the bizarre scene during the reception.

“Miss Polly?” A chirpy voice interrupts her.

“Brandi!” Anna rubs her eyes. “What are you doing here?”

“I just wanted to thank you for last night,” The newlywed smiles. “if it weren’t for you none of us would be here today.”

“All in a day’s work.” Anna shrugs.

“I want you to have this...” Brandi removes a locket from her neck. “Here.”

Anna gazes at the jewelry shimmering in her palm.

“I can’t accept this.” She stammers.

“It’s my great grandmother’s. She brought it with her during the First Migration eighty years ago. Since then it’s been passed down to my grandmother, my mother and finally me. It’s kind of a tradition.”

“What if you want to pass it down to your kids someday?”

“I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it,” Brandi waves the thought away. “now that I have the opportunity.”

“There’s no picture...” Anna glances at the empty locket. “is that intentional?”

“I thought you’d want a blank slate, in case you meet the special man in your life someday. Anyway, nice talking to you. Don’t forget to write.”

“I won’t. Oh, and what’s that performance in the altar all about?”

“The thing with the virgins? It was Marcus’s idea. He was a performance artist before getting into the family business—go figure.”

“A real avant-garde, huh?” Anna swallows her mead. “Now if you excuse me, I got to piss.”

Wandering through the reception area Anna overhears Lianna talking in hushed voices with an older man, presumably Brandi’s father. Despite the colleagial atmosphere, the concern in the gruff diplomat’s voice is no less alarming.

“Are you sure?” She overhears Lianna ask pointedly. “What you’re talking about is borderline treason.”

“Positive.” Brandi’s father responds. “I’ve seen the cables. The government isn’t lifting a finger. They issue warnings and do what they can, but the bottom line is they’d rather take their chances and be seen as weak than start another war.”

“But the Vang are nearly extinct. Why are they afraid of them?”

“Things have changed...” The diplomat sighs. “The Vang are buying cruisers and patrol ships from rogue elements in the quadrant. Thanks to reproductive technology, their population has quadrupled since the peace treaty. Their soldiers are well-trained, discliplined and have a grasp of Colonial military strategy. This is not your father’s Vang, that’s for sure.”

Brandi’s father exhales deeply.

“They imposed a gag order on the press throughout the quadrant—not that it’ll do any good. Everyone can see the clouds brewing overhead. Publicly things are same as they ever were, but I’m in a position hear things and to be honest, the Confed’s are scared witless. we’re headed for another war, no way around it.”

“What’s their angle?”

“Jove if I know,” The diplomat laughs nervously. “I’m just afraid for my daughter. After last night...”

Anna walks out of earshot and pretends not to hear them, even as her blood boils with anger.

* * *

Anna tosses and turns in her sleep as the nightmare plays out in her head again. She cries out to her sister as she walks towards the Vang captors, imploring her to turn back. But the scene is set. She watches helplessly as Dana leaves behind a trail of clothes until she is stark naked, shambling towards the reptillian invaders. A lone tear creases down Anna’s face as her voice quivers.

“Please don’t go, Dana.” She whimpers in the darkness. “Please don’t go...”

Her eyes pry open as she awakens from her slumber. Her heart pounds as she scans her quarters. She lies on the bed, struggling to come to terms with the loss of her sister yet again. It may be only a dream, but for her it feels like yesterday. She glances at the clock on the nightstand.

0300.

A weary sigh fills Anna’s quarters as she stares at the ceiling trying to get her bearings, the thump-thump-thump of her own heartbeat drowning out the hum of the vents pumping recycled air throughout the pressurized ship. The image of her sister, flaxen locks dangling over her steel blue eyes as she smiled. Those were the good days...

She would be twenty four today, Anna muses. The auburn haired waif wonders if her sister became a breeder or if the creatures had some other purpose for her. Maybe Dana has no idea she’s been enslaved at all, as though she’s lived in a state of imposed ecstasy fueled by sex and mind control. That’s if she’s lucky.

“Who were you talking to?” Vanessa groans.

“I’m fine.” Anna plays dumb. “Go back to sleep.”

“I’m getting really sick of this.” Vanessa straightens up. “If all you’re going to do is moan and cry the least you can do is get me something better than a couple sheets and a pillow.”

“If you haven’t noticed, this isn’t exactly a luxury hotel,” Anna chides her. “besides, I doubt the two of us could fit in this twin bed.”

“It’s a hell of a lot better than sleeping on the floor.” Vanessa fires back. “I’m on the verge of staging a one-woman strike. I’ll pace up and down the floor with a sign that reads ‘No sheets, no winks’”

An uncomfortable silence passes between the two roommates. Neither ventures to speak for several minutes, as though by ignoring the other the tension will go away. Instead, it builds up. Unable to take it anymore, Anna turns the lights on with a wave of her hand, dimming them slightly.

“Okay,” She exhales. “if you want to know, it’s my sister.”

“That’s it?” Vanessa crosses her arms. “That’s what all this is about?”

“I’ve never told anyone this but...she went missing several years ago. The Vang cornered us in our home and tried to take us back to their homeworld, I guess. I managed to resist them, but Dana wasn’t so fortunate. The image of her vanishing into thin air haunts me to this day.”

Vanessa nods soberly.

“If that doesn’t mess anyone up, I don’t know what will.”

“There’s more. I overheard the captain speaking with Brandi’s father at the wedding reception. The Vang are amassing a huge army of recruits. Word is there’s going to be another war and we’re nowhere near prepared for it. It’s so bad the Confeds have put a quadrant-wide gag order on all the presses in the area. I saw what happened to Dana—I don’t want it to happen to the rest of us too.”

“You know what you need?” Vanessa perks up. “A double rainbow.”

Anna raises an eyebrow.

“A what?”

“A double rainbow,” Vanessa blushes. “you know how when a man makes love to you and your legs are kind of spread out, like a V? That’s a double rainbow. It was my Jason’s nickname for missionary. Jove bless his heart.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died during the invasion. Self-inflicted pistol wound. He disintegrated on the spot. He was all of twenty-five. I miss him...”

“Sorry to hear that.” Anna rubs her chin thoughtfully. “How does this ‘Double Rainbow’ work exactly?”

“I’ll never tell.”

“But you can show me, right?”

The women lock eyes and stare at each other intently for what seems like a lifetime. In that moment, an unspoken barrier is crossed as they read each other’s minds. The shields Anna’s maintained for so long suddenly disappear. She scans the darkness carefully for intruders.

But it’s only the two of them now.

Vanessa looks askance at her.

“Are you serious?”

“Yes, I’m serious.”

“But...I’ve never been with a girl. Not like that.”

“C’mon.” Anna pats her bed. “Didn’t you experiment in the Academy?”

“I snogged my fair share of recruits. But this is different.”

“No time like the present.”

Summoning up her courage Vanessa crawls on top of Anna and straddles her, assuming the role of the “man” as their hips rest mere inches apart. With her best friend practically on top of her, Anna watches as Vanessa hovers over her, looking as though she’s going to jump into a session of push-ups.

“Spread your legs.” Vanessa’s voice is clipped.

Their genitals briefly touch as she mimes her deceased boyfriend’s lovemaking, grinding softly before pulling away. Anna observes it all with a sense of befuddlement. But not even she can escape the sense of arousal the act of simulated congress brings. A purr of surprise—or is it arousal—escapes her lips.

“And that,” Vanessa concludes without missing a beat. “Is the double rainbow.”

Anna’s head swims with lust. The hazy feeling brings back conflicted feelings to the surface. The memories of seeing her roommate defile herself with Anna’s own dildo spring to mind, as does the session with Kolkata, and the chance encounter with the Vang on Quicksilver. She wants to give in so badly and yet, and yet...

“What are you thinking about?” Vanessa glances at her.

She barely has a chance as Anna pulls her towards her, culminating in a soft, wet kiss that takes Vanessa off guard.

“The dildo.” Anna strokes her friend’s cheek. “I need to feel it inside of me.”

“I don’t know where it is.” Vanessa shakes her head.

“Please,” Anna begs. “I need this...”

Vanessa rifles through the drawers, hoping to find it before Anna snaps at her again. The sound of Anna’s whimpers drown out the sound of her own voice as Vanessa searches in vain for the penis-shaped object. At last she grasps what feels like a 6″ dong in the bottom of Anna’s panty drawer.

“This it?” She holds it up for her friend to see.

Anna nods excitedly.

She adjusts her panties as she makes room for her roommate to enter her. There is a brief chill as the jade dildo is stuffed inside, but Anna relaxes as Vanessa gently penetrates her. The session seems to last for a century as the two women surrepticiously roleplay Anna’s desire to be dominated by the Vang. As the session comes to a close they embrace once more in a kiss, warmed by their bodies’ heat.

“Thank you.” Anna strokes Vanessa’s hair. “I needed that.”

“You’re welcome.” Vanessa pants.
