Moving In

It had been a wild and very exciting couple of months. I had completed several large and rewarding commercial projects and block buster movie posters. My favorite gallery in New York, the McCoy, gave me a one man show that was, to my surprise, an astounding success. Suddenly, I was in high demand. They still live in the dreary Midwest rust belt that I grew up in. It was anything but inspiring artistically. I had saved quite a bit from the commercial projects and it made sense to think about settling down and buying some property. An only child, I was always close with my folks, but I knew it was time to move on from that little town.

I flirted with the idea of a loft in Manhattan or Hoboken, but decided I wasn't really a big city guy. All the gallery talk about surfing gave me the idea of living at the beach. I loved going to the Jersey Shore every summer while I was in college and it was the subject of a lot of my illustrations, but I decided that I would tire of it after a while. The idea of living in the mountains or at least the foothills of the mountains was very appealing. I began to travel different areas of the East Coast looking for a home.

I found the perfect place off the Parkway in Western North Carolina. It was a quaint town with lots of amenities and spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. On my second day looking for houses, I found a 1920s two story bungalow that caught my interest. It looked like a stone cottage from the Swiss Alps down a secluded stretch of road.

It sat at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. I fell in love when I went upstairs and saw the Master Bedroom. It had a spectacular view of the mountains. It overlooked a beautifully landscaped ragged garden common to the mountains. Situated at the highest point of the cul-de-sac, the bungalow only overlooked one other house. It had a small swimming pool in the backyard. I figured that old neighbors must have been friendly because there was a gate in the stockade fence around the pool. I made an offer on the spot. It had been a second home for a professor and his family and they were willing to sell it furnished. Most of my stuff was early art school flat, so I was glad to return home and take most of it to Goodwill.

I loaded my remaining belongings into a medium sized rental truck and headed south for my new home. It was a long drive, almost thirteen hours. I had to stop for gas and food a couple of times. I arrived at about 10 PM exhausted and parked the truck in front of the house. I climbed the steps and leaving a trail of clothes along the way.
