Chapter 82

Eileiea finished her ministrations to Sateala's battered behind and we were finally able to pile into bed. For obvious reasons Sateala slept near the edge and I got in right beside her, carefully laying one arm across her back and just as carefully avoiding contact with her injured parts. She whimpered again as I put my arm around her, probably expecting another blow. I whispered in her ear that I was sure I would never have to strike her again and I assured her that she would feel much better in the morning.

Ralph, Phil or Frank must have helped her out then since she fell asleep almost immediately. Surprisingly I must have fallen off very soon after that since the next thing I was aware of was being awake and feeling rested.

I opened my eyes and looked toward where Sateala had been when I went to sleep. Her eyes were open and she was looking right into my face. I smiled at her.

"How are you feeling?"

"I don't understand but I feel good. It's almost as if it was all a bad dream. I don't feel any pain and last night I was sure I would be hurting for the rest of my life," she said.

"I'm sorry that I had to do it but you must know that I couldn't ignore what you had done."

"I do know and am glad that I'm alive to see another day. It is more than I expected when I realized that you knew," she said.

"The best thing that we can do is forget about it. I'm satisfied that you won't betray me again and I'm sure that after a few days you will come to like being with us."

"You may be right Sateala, in fact I'm sure that you are. If I ever come to really like being the leader here it will be time for me to give it up to someone who doesn't want it."

Others started stirring then and I felt someone get out of bed on the other side. Eileiea came around to our side and asked Sateala how she felt this morning.

"I don't understand how it can be Eileiea but I don't feel any pain at all, not even any soreness," she told her.

"Let me look at you," Eileiea said and knelt by the bed.

"John, there are no marks and no bruising anywhere. I don't understand," Eileiea said after her examination.

"That's good then, I was afraid I'd have to ask all of you to wear your trousers this morning so that Sateala wouldn't stand out."

"What do you mean?" Sateala asked.

"We are going to do everything that is expected this morning. You and Miekadakta will wear your new clothes so that no one will suspect that anything out of the ordinary has happened."

"New clothes, what new clothes?" Sateala asked.

"Haven't you noticed that we all wear the short "dresses" that look like they are made of tiger skin?" Eileiea asked her.

"Now that you say it I remember but I have never paid any attention to it before. That is strange in itself but I haven't," she said.

"Those dresses mean that John has been with a woman. Every woman that John has been with has them though only his mates have the tiger skins." Eileiea explained.

"But Failiela and even Deimeta have them too," she said.

"I have made exceptions for them. I have not been with Failiela or Deimeta of course."

Sateala and Eileiea giggled then and I could hear a couple of sniggers behind me too. I wondered how many we had roused but didn't turn around to count noses.

"But you have not taken Miekadakta or I yet," Sateala said.

"No but there is no need to let anyone else in on that and I will cure the oversight tonight, you can count on that. Today you will wear your dresses in anticipation of the fate worse than death that waits for you tonight."

"Just because I didn't realize what the dresses meant doesn't mean that I've never talked to any of the women who wear them. Those that talk of it have made you seem wonderful and I am anxious to find out if they were telling the truth," she said.

"Let's try harder to forget last night and just look forward to the new day. Our problems seem to be solved for the time being at least. After breakfast we should take Deimeta down to the horse cave and let her give us a ride in her little sleigh, with Darta pulling us."

They agreed and it seemed to be the signal for everyone to get up. When we were out of bed we headed for the shower and went into the biggest one. I suppose it also had to do with the fact that things they really needed to know weren't hidden from them as they would be in "civilization."

Raalto, Reeana, Jareena and the rest of his mates came in then followed closely by Barago and his mates and then seemingly all my leaders and their mates showed up. Malooto, who had come in with Danlo's group, wanted to know where Deimeta was and I told him that she had already eaten. He looked disappointed so I invited them all to come to the horse cave after breakfast since we would be having sleigh rides this morning.

Malooto was excited but most of the adults were under whelmed until I mentioned that Deimeta would be giving rides in her miniature sleigh with Darta providing locomotion. Danlo piped up saying that he was also ready to give some rides with Big Mother pulling her sleigh. Hearing this all of their attitudes changed. Some of them hadn't realized that we were making progress in training the mammoths and all of them were surprised when Danlo told them that Deimeta had been the one to show him how to guide Big Mother as she pulled the sleigh.

It was shaping up to be a trouser day for the women after all. It would cut down on my viewing pleasure but wouldn't be too bad. I excused myself to go into my office.

"Good morning John," Ralph said as I entered.

"Good morning to you too Ralph. I suppose I have you to thank for Sateala's remarkable recovery?"

"Yes, I hope you don't mind. You were a little energetic and some of the smaller blood vessels were broken. As long as I was repairing them I thought that I might as well fix her up completely," he said.

"I'm glad that you did. I was counting more on the physiological aspects of the punishment to bring results anyway."

"She was mortified with the whole thing. In fact the spanking might not have even been necessary to insure her allegiance. I was surprised at how happy she was when your mates came for her and she realized that she would become one of your mates," he said.

Their brain, while slightly more capable than yours, can't process that much data. We did the "mind reading" as you call it and only pointed out things that were important for them."

"So your services are much more necessary to them than they let on?"

"Not necessarily mine or Phil's or Frank's but our type of service is necessary. Their entire civilization is dependant on us. Of course we can get along without them now but it would be rather pointless, besides it is what we were created for," he said.

"Has Argent replied to my message?"

"Yes, I'll put it on the display so that you can read it," he said and then did so.

Your message has caused considerable consternation here and I believe that the reason for calling us back has been forgotten now. As those in your former life would say, heads are rolling. Fortunately mine doesn't seem in danger but unfortunately we need to remain here to make sure that the project gets the most favorable treatment during this transition.

I am sorry that we did not foresee the attack on the neighboring camp or the attempt on your life. Let me assure you that we made sure, before we left, that no harm could come to you or anyone close to you. If your difficulties become insurmountable please ask Ralph, Frank or Phil for assistance. They will explain some capabilities they have that you are not aware of.

Please do not close your mind to staying there. If you feel we are in breach of the agreement we will negotiate with you in good faith when I return and we will make sure that things are to your liking.

Argent

I guess my message had stirred the pot for Argent. He seemed positive now that he would be coming back and it seemed he was set on making me like the outcome one way or another.

Hell, I liked the outcome fine already but I wasn't going to tell him that. I think that I was enjoying my time here more now than I had before and I'd loved things from the start.

"I guess that I should send him some type of reply, what do you think Ralph?"

"It would be helpful to him but I am not sure how much you should tell him, I'll admit that we have a dubious record as far as complicated negotiations between living beings go."

"Oh I know what to tell him, nearly nothing. May I dictate to you?"

"Of course."

Argent:

I will stay until you return and maintain the status quo here as far as I am able. Please understand that "you" does mean Argent and not one of your people.

"That may cause more agitation than no reply," Ralph said.

"That is what I intended. I'm not mad at Argent and before he left he told me that they might send someone else back in his place. I don't want to be bothered breaking in a new spaceman."

"I'm not saying that you are wrong but I am very curious about what makes you so confident," Ralph said.

"You, Frank and Phil do. I don't doubt one thing that you've told me. What can they do if I don't cooperate at all? Will the three of you allow them to remove me against my will?"

"No, we won't."

"Haven't you already begun making sure that they can't force the issue?"

"In fact we have but how did you know?" he asked.

"You told me even if you didn't intend to. You didn't tell me that you would be preparing already but I knew that you must be. My estimate, from what you've told me, is that none of you are using any significant fraction of your capabilities while monitoring us. What else would you be doing if not preparing for the future?"

"You are correct so far."

"What is the only major unknown in our future?"

"How do you know that they will even be concerned about you?" he asked.

"I don't know why they will be but I am sure about it and I'm in a no lose situation. For some reason the three of you are very interested in staying here and observing me and the others. With what you've told me it doesn't matter if Argent and the others never come back. You, Phil and Frank like what's going on here and I don't have any doubts that you can make sure that I am undisturbed.

"By his own actions, Argent has already let me know that what ever I'm doing here is important to him and also to a probably large and certainly powerful group in his society.

"He and no doubt many others want me to stay here and keep doing what I'm doing. You, Frank and Phil want me to do the same thing. The only miniscule doubt I have is whether there is some other civilization that might be more powerful and might want to cause me trouble but I doubt that seriously."

"You surprise me John," he said.

"Isn't that part of why I'm here in the first place?"
