Chapter 48

When I woke the next morning I was snuggled up to Jaada's back and Jaadalla was snuggled up to mine. Jetta was with us too, snuggled up to Jadaalla's back. "We can make a sort of combination of the two." I blurted out when it struck me.

"What do you mean?" Barago asked.

"We can make several rafts and tie the ends of them together, then we will tie them across the river and instead of moving one raft back and forth we will be able to walk across the rafts, from one to the other. It will also be easy to take them up during the flood next spring." I said.

We discussed this thoroughly now. They had a hard time seeing what I could imagine but when breakfast was over we went outside to get started. I told them that it would be easy enough to understand once we had a couple of rafts built.

We had plenty of logs already to make frames for the rafts but those that we had brought up were of too large a diameter to use for covering the tops to make the surface to be walked on. After we ate at noon, Barago left with his men to find some smaller trees to use for the walking surface. This would be more difficult since there would be few, if any, deadfalls that would be small enough. Trees for the decking would have to be felled. Of course if we'd had the sawmill going already we would not have the problem since we could easily saw boards to do the trick. We didn't have it though and wouldn't for quite a while.

After lunch, while Barago was leaving for more timber, Raalto and Daaggo got a group started building the main framework for the rafts we would need. I left them at it and returned to my cave and then went into my office. Checking the video I found that Danlo and the others had nearly made it back already and were no more than thirty minutes from camp.

I met them as they arrived and was hit with a surprising question. I didn't really know the answer and said so. I left them to go about their business and went to talk things over with Georgo. Luckily I found him seated at the table drinking coffee and when I sat near him Delia brought me a mug.

"We have a little situation that has developed during the trip and I don't know what to do about it." I said.

"What has happened?" He asked.

"Apparently one of the new men who had promised faithfully that he wanted to come here and that he understood the rules was less than forthcoming."

"Did he slip away?" Georgo asked.

"He tried but he also tried to force his mate to come with him and she didn't want to. He was in the process of beating her into submission when Talvo demonstrated his new proficiency with the spearcaster. What will happen now that a boy, not a man yet, has killed a mated man? Will the woman be Talvo's mate?"

"It has happened before but not in my lifetime that I know of. I do know that it has happened though and that was the way it was handled before. The boy took the woman of the man he killed as his mate. I can understand why there was confusion though. It will all work out and I'm sure that it won't be long before Talvo becomes a man anyway." Georgo said.

"I will do my best to make sure it works out if that is the way it should be but it does remind me of another question that I've had. It almost came up during our last altercation but luckily enough everyone seemed to agree that none of my mates that used their bows during the ambush delivered any killing blows on the mated men. What happens when a man's mate kills a mated man? Who is responsible for the dead man's mate then?"

"That has also happened, in fact it has happened twice that I know of. The dead man's mate joins the woman who killed her mate as another mate for her mate." Georgo told me and I'll swear he was having to bite his tongue to keep from laughing.

I was wondering about his apparent strain at keeping his composure.

"As a matter of fact John, one little detail seems to have slipped your mind in all this excitement." He said, openly grinning now.

"What detail is that Georgo?"

"It is true that none of your mates killed a mated man during the initial ambush but have you forgotten that Ameliea shot one of the men who tried to bully his way past her during the questioning?" He asked.

I was speechless because I had forgotten about it completely. His reminder brought it back at once so I had to ask if the man had been mated.

"In fact he was mated. I'm guessing that Ameliea didn't realize that she had earned you another mate and I know that the dead man's mate doesn't know what is to become of her. I suppose that it might be time for you to make the happy announcement." Georgo said and finally laughed out at me.

"I am terribly embarrassed now Georgo. I have acquired a mate and didn't even have the courtesy to claim her. What must she think of me and what about the others."

"None of them has considered it and I'm sure that most probably don't understand what has happened and what the protocol is. As I said, it does not come up often. In any case a delay of a day or two is not uncommon. I do think that you should speak to her today at least." He said.

"Maybe I should go right now."

"There is no rush. She won't be leaving." Georgo said, still chuckling.

"I can't believe it, I felt so relieved that I hadn't gathered another mate and now I find that I have."

"It's true that you dodged three out of four new mates but I don't think you did yourself any favors. Did you see the other three women that your mates gave you at least a chance at?" He asked me.

"No, I'll confess that I made a special effort to keep from it."

"They were some of the most attractive of the women left in that camp." He told me gleefully.

"Well all is not lost Georgo, they will all be living on our side of the river." I said smiling myself.

"I'm sure that you will also be delighted with the new mate that you did acquire. Even though she is very young, Taaheita is definitely a woman and a very attractive one at that." Georgo couldn't help it, he laughed aloud. I had a chuckle myself.

"By the way, which man did Talvo kill?" He asked.

"I didn't know him but Danlo said it was Jotollo. Did you know him?"

"I had seen him and knew of him. It doesn't surprise me that he was trying to slip away and I wonder how he was able to make it through the questioning without getting killed. I can also tell you that if the spirits don't make room for Talvo and his new mate near Danlo's quarters you will probably have men in there soon trying to dig out some space for him yourself." He said laughing again.

"What do you mean?"

"Wait until you see Geritatea. You will know what I mean then." He said.

I took Georgo's jab to mean that Talvo had gained a good-looking mate for his troubles. I felt Argent giving me a little tingle and after I finished my coffee I went to my office and contacted them.

"Do you need for me to make arrangements for Talvo and his new mate to stay near you." Argent asked me without preamble.

"I can't see a reason not to. See if you can carve out some space for him in the Danlo dormitory please."

"Should we cause another tremble?" He asked.

"I don't think it will be necessary, just do what you need to when the place is empty and I'll go and tell Talvo he is being provided for."

"We will take care of it at once, no one is in their quarters now." Argent said and signed off.

Talvo was helping with the unloading and when I approached him he seemed a little uneasy. I decided not to prolong his discomfiture so I went right to him.

"I've heard that you have joined the mated men now Talvo."

"I'm sorry John but when I saw that he was hitting her I acted without thinking." He told me, clearly nervous.

"You did the right thing Talvo and even though you aren't a man yet I'm sure that you will be soon. You are already doing a man's job and are able to provide for your mate."

"But I don't even know very much about hunting." He said.

"Obviously you know the use of your weapon well enough. I will make sure that you have plenty to eat Talvo, didn't I make that clear when I asked you to work with the horses for me?"

"Yes but I was afraid that it wouldn't include a mate." He said.

"It includes as many mates as you accumulate. You have worked hard to make yourself helpful and I'm proud of you. Every day you take care of your responsibilities as if you were a man and now at night you will have a mate to keep you company and care for you. You will find that it is a very agreeable situation."

"I'm sure that I will but that isn't why I killed him." He told me.

"I know that Talvo but I have to tell you that you have done me a favor. If you hadn't taken care of him for me and he had been able to force his mate to slip away I would probably be leaving on Red now to hunt him down. You know that I don't allow the things he was doing and he was warned before he came here. You have saved me much bother."

"I felt bad about it but I couldn't let that happen to her. I suppose that I need to see her and help her find a place for us to settle." Talvo said.

"Your place should be ready soon Talvo, you will have quarters near Danlo and the others."

"I will?" He asked, perking up considerably.

"Yes, they will be ready soon. Go tell your mate not to unpack her things and then you can help the others. I will come for you when it is time to settle you in your new space."

Talvo left to find his new mate and there was a big smile on his face. I went off and found Danlo then and told him the situation. He seemed to be glad about it and he left to tell Jonoco and Nadlo so I returned to my cave.

Shallea, Shaala and Melieta were there with my mates and I gave them the lowdown. They were excited to have new neighbors and intended to go to their quarters and see about making room. I told them to stay away from them for a while and that I would let them know when they could return. They agreed but I saw that it seemed a little strange to them. Strange or not I knew that it would seem even stranger if they went in and found the walls moving or something such as that.

The travelers had done a good job with the packing and had been able to bring back everything except the huts. Danlo had intended to head back that way tomorrow to disassemble them and bring them back also. I'd told him to forget them. If someone found them and moved in it would be a good thing and if they rotted down that would suit me also. I couldn't think of a thing we could use so many more salvaged huts for.

I called Ameliea to my office and when the door was shut behind her I pulled her to me for a big kiss.

"I see that I didn't have enough mates to suit you so you made sure I would get another one." I told her when we broke the kiss.

"I don't understand." She said, clearly confused.

"Georgo has just told me that the mate of Dondoto, the man you killed as he tried to escape the questioning, should become my mate by custom. It is as if you obtained her as a gift for me and I thank you for that gift."

"I did not even think of that but I can see it is how things should be. I am happy myself now and all the others will be too when they hear it." She said.

"Are you sure?"

"Of course, we have already been lamenting the fact that we didn't even get one new mate to join us from all those that were in the camp. Now you tell me that Taaheita will join us. I know her and though she is a little shy she is very sweet and friendly. She is also very pretty John; you haven't even seen her yet have you?" She asked.

"In fact I haven't."

"You will be happy when you do, wait and see. May I take the others to go and get her now?" Ameliea asked.

"If you like, but there is no real hurry."

"Maybe not, but Taaheita does not know what is to become of her now that she has no mate. Like me she did not realize that she would become your mate. I talked to her and apologized for killing Dondoto, telling her I had no choice. She did not seem to be sad that he was gone but I think she is worried about her future. She will be especially happy to find out that she will become one of your mates." Ameliea told me excitedly.

"By all means go and tell her then, bring her back with you; perhaps I should interview her in my office." I said grinning wolfishly.

"You should interview all of us in your office, often, but I think that you should welcome Taaheita to the family tonight so that we can all help." Ameliea said sincerely.

"You are right but go and tell her what you have discovered so that she will worry no longer and be sure to tell her that she doesn't have to become one of my mates if she doesn't want to."

"I will tell her but there is no use in it, she will be delighted to know she will become one of your mates." Ameliea told me as she left.

Her last comment had me wondering a little. Did all the women really think that much of me? I had never been such a much with the ladies on earth but I could see that as far as this time and place went I was rich and famous. That couldn't be all bad could it? I guess my experience with it proved that it couldn't. Hell I had a young mob of mates and they all told me it would be fine and dandy if I fucked every woman I saw. "I can vouch for you on that score John. If a man cares no more for his mate than to beat her he doesn't deserve to have a mate." Georgo joined in.

"He doesn't deserve to have breath in my way of thinking. It is hard enough to keep from getting injured anyway and any injury can bring death. We need both men and women in this camp but I will admit freely that I like women best and I intend to have plenty of them around me. They won't be getting all bruised up by the men either. If a man feels like he needs to best something he can get out and best some game or some of the predators. Hunting cave lions will be no more dangerous than beating women in my camp."

Danlo walked into the cave then and caught me with a handful of Daria's sweet ass. He came to us and didn't mention a word about it but began asking about Talvo at once.

"Has Talvo found room for he and his mate near us?" Danlo asked as Daria went back toward the coffee pot.

"Not yet but he will have no trouble soon. There will be a space for him later."

"That will be good. I saw his mother now and she is so proud of him that she is about to burst. She is giving you all the credit too, saying that without your guidance Talvo would probably be dead now like the ones that were trying to lead him astray." Danlo said.

"I only made him see the error of his behavior, Talvo has worked hard with no further troublemaking and I think that you are due more than a little of the credit yourself."

"I have done nothing for Talvo, he has been helping me." Danlo said.

"You show him what to do and tell him when he needs to do it. Do not slight yourself Danlo, you are becoming a good leader and I'm sure that John is proud of you also." Georgo told him.

"I am proud of Danlo. He is more of a man than any of the former leaders of the camp we just absorbed and when I see Talieia, Talvo's mother, I am going to tell her of the good job Danlo is doing and what a fine example he is for Talvo."

Danlo was speechless but I could tell he was delighted with the praise. I also knew that when I told Talieia what I thought, her mate would be getting a very sound sleep some night soon and that she would be showing Danlo how much she appreciated his guidance for her son. I nearly laughed at the thought.

My mates came back into the cave just then with Taaheita in tow. She was the cutest little thing. She must have been very near Maia's age and was barely five feet tall. Taaheita was dumbfounded by the kitchen and couldn't stop looking from one new thing to the next. I could see that she was actually getting distressed about not understanding a single thing that was happening. I knew one thing that she could learn quickly and to rescue her I spoke up.

"Will someone take pity on me and teach Taaheita how to pour a cup of coffee and bring it to me?"

"It is our bed. Everyone on this side of the canyon has a bed to sleep in. Lie down on it, I'm sure you will like it." Talvo said.

I left them to explore their new quarters and I returned to the table. My coffee was still warm so I continued sipping it. Georgo was back with me shortly and showing off her new skill, Taaheita brought him a mug of coffee. I asked her for a refill and she fetched that also.

"Did I tell you of the new inhabitants of Caato's old camp Georgo?"

"No. Has another group taken over there?" He asked.

"Yes. As nearly as I can tell it is four or five men and twelve to fourteen women. The men all seem to have only one mate and the rest of the women are unmated. There were no boys at all."

"A group like that will probably have a hard time this winter, especially since they have obviously just moved their camp." He said.

"What do you think about visiting them? You could see if they would like to join us here."

"I think that it is the perfect thing to do. I don't see how they can make it through the winter without going hungry and there is no need for them to suffer. Do you think I could leave tomorrow?" He asked.

"I don't see why not."

"If they are agreeable I will come back at once and we can use the wagons to bring them and their things here." He said.

"You do not even have to come back. If they agree just open the doors on your wagon box as a signal for me and I will send Danlo and Talvo with the two wagons. Using your buckboard also, there will be plenty of room to bring them all and all their things. You will probably all be able to return early the next day."

"That is what I will do then, in fact I think I will try to leave just after sunrise in the morning." He said.

Nothing would suit me better. If things went right I might be able to slip into his bed with his mates before they even woke.
