Short stories! Is it possible for me to write anything less than 40 pages?

Certainly that's a challenge I face as a writer. Okay, here are a set of short pieces. They share some common themes. The emphasis is on short -- so don't think character development, think character introduction and exposure. Probably a common response is going to be that they each represent the start of something longer -- yeah, I like sagas, digging in and exploring. But the idea here is short things. So if you get to the “end” of one and think to yourself, “Well, that was an interesting start...” that's about right.

Another aspect is to take the starting few pages of things (some of them a few years old) and take them to this short story point and punt them out. Will any of them sprout into longer things? That's not the idea! That's the problem! So many things I do want to turn into sagas, and I don't have the time!

I am accepting suggestions for titles on these -- got any?

And occasionally I'll promote a story out of here and on to its own -- Challenge is the first.

Oh, please do not write me to let me know that a part is missing! The numbers in the sequence have no significance whatsoever, and unless links in them show otherwise, the pieces have no interconnection or continuity. There is no “sequence” other than the order I finish them. That's life.
