"I'll have you whipped," he had said. He didn't mean it, but that wasn't important. He used to discipline her personally: spankings with the hairbrush, or lashings with the belt. Now, she would never again hear his belt hiss through its loops as she flinched, nose riveted to the corner.

Very moving, but puzzling. WHY will she «never again hear his belt
hiss through its loops....»? Has he ceased to love her? found someone else? He still at least speaks of discipline to her, so he hasn't simply left a relationship. What is going on here? A mini-saga must outline its story, can't possibly show it in full detail; but please give us some further hint about how and why their separation is taking place.

The story confused me a bit. Couldn't get a handle on the relationship. It did leave me with a sense of melancholy but only because of the last sentence. Why is she in this position? Why won't he have her whipped? Why did he stop? A lot of questions asked but not answered. Yet, I enjoyed the saga.

This took me a couple of readings to understand that she is essentially missing him. And for whatever reason, he will no longer be disciplining her. But this raises tons of questions. Why is he gone? Or is he still there and someone else her disciplinarian? I do not find it to be a complete story as it does not leave me with an understanding of what is going on. This is more like an opening paragraph to a longer story.
