Roy Orbison, Singing For The Lonely

He wanted to be kind to her.
That was the story he told himself, when he had doubts.
They were an oddly matched pair, at first. He, a computer geek in his twenties, she, a barmaid in her late thirties, divorced, rather negative in outlook. She was overweight, and out of breath. A chain smoker, and a heavy spirits drinker. Past her best, in many ways.
They'd met when he installed the new system for the bar, one of his freelance projects. Perhaps because they reacted to the same video clips on MTV as it blared above their heads, he'd detected empathy.
He'd come back the next night. And the next.
Finally, he'd invited her to the movies.
Pizza followed.
And, of course, drinks.
It had been her who'd made the first pass.
What could he say but 'yes'?
His expectations were not high, but he enjoyed her company.
And the sex was much better than online chatrooms.
The only problem was her hypo-orgasmic nature. She just didn't come, or it took forever to wind her up to that state.
It had pissed off her husband, hence the short-lived marriage. It was spoiling her life.
That was when he became a man with a mission.
At first, she was incredulous at his proposal. But, she didn't toss him out of her apartment, telling him he was a pervert, a sex maniac. No, she'd grown tearful, and accused herself of being frigid, of not being able to please him.
That wasn't it, he'd insisted. He wanted to help, and he knew how. He'd researched it carefully.
A couple of drinks later, they were in bed. And he outlined his strategy. She blushed, but agreed to cooperate.
Shyness was a problem, so he taught her to enjoy nudity at every possible opportunity. Signed her up for a gym, lectured her on food habits.
And soon, she's slipped off twenty pounds. She was still comfortably built, but she felt better about herself, and maintained her efforts.
Next, he taught her what every girl needs to know: How to masturbate. And better still, how to do it while a lover watches. At first, she needed to be blindfolded to even begin.
But progress was rapid.
She'd call him at work, and come over the phone, rubbing herself, using a dildo, whispering her fantasies.
Putting her fantasies to work was the next phase.
She'd blushed like a young girl, the first time he handcuffed her. But she'd gasped with pleasure at her spanking.
Soon, she was ahead of him.
Coming easily, open to all kinds of sexual games, openly exhibitionistic. Fascinated by bondage, eager to be spanked and whipped.
She didn't smoke; she'd drink a mere couple of glasses of wine. Customers flirted with her constantly. Regulars were amazed as she shed several clothes sizes, learned to do make- up properly, developed good taste in books, movies, and food.
But she remained loyal to her teacher. And after a while, they began to call it love.

This is a challenging tale of a young man with an older woman but its he who teaches her how to enjoy the sensuality of her body. It develops well and the gradual evolution from tension to relaxed sensusl enjoyment is well described. I felt the story had rather too many period marks for my liking (full stops for we Brits!!) and though I realise this is probably the author's device I would have liked the story to flow a little more

Moving portrait of a down on her luck woman meeting someone who gives her the confidence to live her life fully, and do everything she wants to do without the fear of being laughed at. It is a story full of hope and the realization that love does not always need to be the kind the sweeps you off your feet right away.
