This is not quite the usual sort of story that I write being that it is romantic but remember that the Coyote is a trickster. It set on the last day of summer (school starts the next day)and sometime in the future. Since almost all the story is one character speaking, I have not used quotes marks on each paragraph as that would be distracting.
First Meeting
By

"How did you and Grandpa Blue meet Grandpa Green?" asked the boy as they tucked him in.
It was the first day of the fifth grade when we met. We both had the same name, same birthday, uniform and even our ID numbers were the same except for some alpha prefixes. By midday we were glaring at each other and arguing who should go first. We even matched physically so when we stood face to face our noses touched and I stared into his blue eyes while he stared back into my green ones.
It was just a matter of time before something happened. Lining up after lunch for the umpteen time that day we got physical like 10 year olds are wont do. We did not slug each other; it was more like pushing but it was enough for Ms. Oldhag to pounce on us.
"I've had enough of this boys." She grabbed us and snapped punishment tags on our wrists. "Get your sorry bottoms down to the punishment room -- immediately. If you take more than seven minutes you'll get extra." she ordered keying the controller. Then she pushed us out the door.
"Where is the punishment room?" we asked each other. Suddenly, we had a common goal. The door was locked behind us. The hall was empty. "The office will know." we agreed. And we started running to the stairs at the far end of the hall and downstairs.
It took us three minutes and then the clerk made us wait before answering us. It was in the basement on the other side of the building. We took off like banshees and were soon there. After a bit of shoving he got his tag in the slot first.
The punishment machine screen responded immediately. It didn't have any problem distinguishing us. He got 20 plus an extra 2 for being first. I got 20 plus an extra 2 for being late. We challenged each other with smiles as we stripped down.
He got into the machine first and the clamps locked him into position. The punishment arm came out and applied the 22 strokes. He yelled and had a tear soaked face when he got released. Then he had the joy of watching me get it exactly the same way.
"He yelled and cried just like I did." interjected Granddad Blue.
After inspecting our hot red butts we dressed and washed up. We decided to tell the other boys how macho we were and hadn't cried or yelled. In order to protect our secret we had to stay together; to become friends. Eventually we married and adopted your dad and aunt.
So grandson, that is how your granddads met and we have been together every since. You're the first one we told the whole story. Now go to sleep, grandson. Tomorrow is a very important day -- your first in fifth grade and our fiftieth anniversary.
They bumped noses as they looked loving into each other eyes again.

This story had a nice nostalgic, almost comforting feel, although not really my cup of tea. I can appreciate the shared experiences of old friends, and I liked the style of writting. An interesting read.

How touching and sweet! In this futuristic society, boys will be boys and still get into trouble on their first day of school. Childhood sweethearts experiencing their punishment together set the stage for a blossoming friendship. This was a charming tale of remembrance which touched upon my heart.

Cute story, and I liked the twisty ending. Nice use of language and it's very descriptive in a succinct way. Thanks for sending this along.

Definitely different. The idea of two boys being so similar that they become rivals, only to become friends to hide their reactions to being spanked is interesting.
I was puzzled by the time setting of this one, though. All the feel said future but with spanking being so severely outlawed in schools I didn't see how that could be. Still, perhaps a machine, and privacy, make the difference.
