Irina

Starship <starship_64@yahoo.com>
Irina's father was drinking brandy in the front room of their little cottage outside Novgorod when she came in. She took a deep breath and reached back, half unconsciously, to rub her bottom, which was still very sore, even though the whipping had been hours before. It took all her courage to walk over and stand in front of him. "Papa, we must talk," she said quietly.
Aleksandr Tarshinov put down his glass. "Is this more about your lieutenant?" he asked. "You've only got yourself to blame for this afternoon, you know. I warned you that I'd take a strap to you if you didn't stay..."
"Papa, Fernando is leaving," she said quickly. "His brother was killed. They're sending him home so his family won't have to risk losing two sons."
Her father stopped. "So that's settled then," he said. "When?"
"Less than a week." She swallowed hard. "I'm going back with him."
He blinked. "Have you gone mad child? You're only sixteen years old!"
"I love him Papa. And he loves me. And besides..." she looked down at the floor and let her voice taper off.
"Besides?" her father prompted.
Irina took a deep breath, blinking back the tears that were beginning to sting the corners of her eyes. "I am carrying his child," she whispered.
Her father quickly got to his feet. "Are you certain?"
"Yes." Irina nodded, not daring to look up at him. "I'm so sorry Papa."
"Irina, he is the enemy!"
"The Spanish aren't like the Germans," she protested. "They've only come here to fight Stalin."
"And yet they wear German uniforms," her father replied. "Child, if the communists find out..."
"The communists can't hurt me or our child if I am in Spain."
"I see." Her father sighed. "So your mind is made up," he said quietly.
"It's the only way." Irina rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. "But I thought you deserved to hear it from me face to face." She took another deep breath. "Even if it means another whipping."
"It is a tempting thought," her father admitted. "But I think I'll just recommend that Fernando whip you instead." He paused. "Will he do the right thing?"
She nodded. "His army chaplain will marry us before we leave, provided that we have your permission."
"Ah," he said, shaking his head and smiling. "The real reason you couldn't just sneak away."
"Papa!" Irina said, slapping him lightly on the chest.
"Ah, my little Irina," he said. "I shall indeed have to recommend that Fernando take a strap to you, and often."
"You're not angry?" she asked him.
"No." He shook his head. "Just saddened. I am losing my little girl. But I understand; you must do what is best for my grandchild, no matter how much I don't like it."
She leaned up and kissed his cheek. "I love you Papa."
"I love you too daughter," he said quietly. "I love you too."
The End
Historical Note: The "Blue Division" was a unit of Spanish soldiers, under General Augustin Grandes, which fought alongside the Germans against the Soviet Union. Because Spain was nominally a neutral country, the troops wore German uniforms. However, they had not been indoctrinated with Hitler's fanatical racism, and did not commit the sorts of atrocities common in German occupied areas. Several of the soldiers did, in fact, manage to smuggle Russian girls back to Spain with them.

A true story of Love, told very well. A rare treat during this contest, A story written for the reader's enjoyment instead of arousal. My highest regards (tami)
*Best story using the theme secondary

A perfect little miniature moment in a big story, where fates conspire, and life changes. Characters are sketched very effectively and efficiently, and the context is drawn clearly, but without overshadowing the little details that make the story real.

This is a truly delightful tale which would belong in the 'romance' category if we had one this year. Brave Irina finds that disciplinarian daddy has a soft and understanding side after all. Taught me some history too. Very nice.

Starship stays within the theme he chose this year, telling us this historical tale, one of love that springs somewhere, where one hardly expect it to appear, one of a girl brave enough to make a conscious choice, and of a father who loves his daughter enough to respect her choice no matter what. Spanking isn't a plot-building device, and it's good to see that there is enough of plot for the spanko readers not to miss spanking very much.
