Close is not enough

Aaron Steinberg was excited. The great Sol Mankovitch, the leading impresario and record producer, was actually listening to his specially-trained group of singing girls. Aaron was new to this game, but he was sure he had a winner; the kids had a real cute sound.

Sol was impressed but he played it cool. "Yeah, yeah," he said, "Not a bad sound, maybe. But gimme a gimmick. An' the billing? What?"

Aaron's heart leaped. Mankovitch was nibbling. Proudly he came out with his masterpiece. "Aaron's Ball Busting Dreamgirls."

"Stinks!" said Sol. "Come back when you've got a better idea. And get a gimmick!"

Dejectedly Aaron led his team back to his small studio. For weeks he labored to find a gimmic. Then an idea hit him. Back he went to Sol. "Sol," he said excitedly. "I've got it. They're going to perform bare-assed. I'm calling them the Awesome Bare Bottom Cuties."

"Hmm," said Sol. "Getting there. But bare bottoms've bin done," said Sol quickly, for he he'd found another group that had potential, 'The Bare Bottom Boys.' "Gimme something original. And the name still stinks. Too long."

Once again, the dejected Aaron went back to his studio. He tried brainstorming. Nothing. He lost sleep. Bags grew under his eyes. He was at his wit's end.

One night, after having been deeply inside the lead singer, Sherree, he got an idea. Before he'd gone into her he'd spanked her soundly first, just to relieve his troubled mind you understand. After they'd climaxed, she'd lain flat on the bed, as usual, her scarlet bottom uppermost. He'd been softly kissing it. 'Kissing it better' she called this. "Bingo!" he thought. "That's it."

The next morning he called the girls together. "Kids," he said excitedly, "I've got it!"

"I know a discreet doctor," said Bubbles. "He'll fix you up."

"No, no!" he said, irritated. "No, just the gimmick we need. You'll come on bare-assed, as before, but the middle two will bend over, and the two lead girls will whack them with a cane. You can mime to a recording while dancing around in pain."

"Hey!" protested one middle girl. "That's not fair. Sherree's a bitch with the switch."

"Relax," he smiled. "For the encore, you'll have the canes. You can whack Sherree and Bubbles."

With much slick talk from Aaron, and after several rehearsals, they got the routine right.

Excitedly Aaron went to Sol once more, and outlined his proposal. "Original," said Sol. "Possible, yeah. But what'ya gonna call'em?" Aaron played his trump card. "The American Beaten Bottom Ballerinas"

"Stinks!" said Sol. "Too long. Needs crispin'." Desperately Aaron racked his brains. "How's about ABBB?" he said plaintively.

"Nope. Get something ethnically different. Yeah. Swedish maybe."

But Aaron was spent now. He could go on no longer. Reluctantly he quit showbiz, and started a firm of Public Accountants.

Sol's Bare Bottom Boys were a flop. They were upstaged by a highly successful Swedish Group, called ABBA.

Poor Aaron. He never realized how close he got.

This was cute but not one of Valerie's best.  She is writing a lot of stories for the SSC and some are better than others.  I've enjoyed many of her stories but am not sure that quantity makes for the best reading.  Anyway, too bad for this poor promoter who may have missed something big in the world of rock and roll.  PM

This is a funny story. It is a easy read. The author does a good job of describing this character, in all his earnest of trying to become famous. The last lines brought a very funny conclusion to this story.
