"Greenseleves" by Thomas M. Carvett (incest) 10, 10, 10
"Greenseleves" by Thomas M. Carvett (ck29@anon.nymserver.com). The narrator's father, an immigrant to America from Indonesia, died when she was young. In the months that followed his death, she could not remember a single act of his love towards her. She did not shed a single tear at his funeral. All she could remember was how he allowed her just six hours every week to enjoy herself when she was still a child; the rest of the time she was to study and work. And to serve as his sexual surrogate for his wife, who had died several years previously. The story's brief focus is on the impact of that incestuous relationship on the rest of the child's life. The title comes from the name of the first song her father used to play for her, even before she was born, in the hope that she would some day become a great pianist. Ironically, the words of this famous song were directly descriptive of her eventual relationship with her father.
