Paula had been a substitute teacher at the city's largest high school for many years. With a masters degree in chemistry, a minor in physics, and her college of education requirements completed, she was easily the most capable and well prepared teacher of the sciences and mathematics in the school. The regular, full-time teachers all had their degrees in education with a few preparatory courses in the sciences and math. In addition, Paula had taken more courses in the humanities and social sciences than persons teaching those subject since they too had degrees in education with a bare minimum of courses in the field they were trying to teach. Finally, as the school grew, Paula found herself teaching nearly full time as someone was usually sick or otherwise out-of-pocket. However, in spite of her qualifications, excellent record, and ever-expanding workload, Paula was still "part-time" with lower pay and no tenure. Having exhausted her remedies using the usual procedures, she had resigned herself to the situation in spite of its basic lack of fairness. When a new, young, and handsome principal took over at the high school, Gordon suggested that she try again. When Paula pointed out that she had already tried all available appeals without success, Gordon smiled and said, "You haven't tried every thing. Think about it... how does a beautiful woman usually get what she wants from a man?" Within two weeks, Paula found herself with tenure and a higher salary than any of the other teachers in the school. But at that point, complications arose.
