I know I've been carrying on a bit long lately so here's a brief story.

1. Every year we have a company picnic at our office and last year we rented a park area that hadn't been used for a while. I had gotten there pretty early, and the only other person there was a middle-aged woman name Claire. She was one of these people that fancies herself a wealthy society woman, above commonplace activities and people. She always treated me like I was her errand boy. As usual she was way overdressed, complete with long flowery dress and beige pumps. I knew the pumps well because I'd stared at them on numerous occassions. Their coloring was impeccable as was their overall shape. She only bought fine Italian shoes I think. Well, she was standing in the gazebo where all the picnic tables were, walking around in the early morning air staring up at the rafters. "What's up," I asked her. She looked at me and said, "There are spiders all over up there," and she pointed them out. Sure enough, fat brown spiders had gathered up near the gazebo lights, lazy from a night long feast on mosquitos, I figured. "I already stepped on a bunch," she said, "but I can't reach those." My heart flipflopped and my mouth grew dry. "You stepped on some?" I asked. "Oh yes," she said, even pointing the toe of her pump at a brown puddle on the wooden deck. "One's right there." Not to pass up this opportunity, I said, "Do you want me to get them down for you?" "Well, I sure don't want them crawling in my hair all day," she sad, shivering a little. So I found a stick nearby and standing on one of the picnic tables, I poked one of the spiders until it fell. Dropping softly to the floor, it started running on impact, but Claire was faster She reached out her shoe and crunched it, almost daintily, pushing it quickly to the floor and then standing back, looking for the next one. So I knocked another one down, and as it took off running she slamed her foot on it again. But when she pulled her foot away it was gone. "Did I miss it?" she asked, even as she turnedher foot over. "Oh, no, here it is, on my shoe." I looked quickly, and easily saw the gooey pile squashed on her sole. And I noted that her sole was smooth brown, obviously having just come from the shoe repairman. And this went on for awhile. She must have stepped on six or seven spiders, each offering an echoing crunch in the small gazebo. Another car pulled in so we didn't get to crush them all, but the best part was, just as we were finishing up, I asked her if I could wipe her show with a paper towel. So she offered me her leg, and with me crouched on one knee, her heel practically in my groin, I wiped the remains of fat spiders from the sole of that beige pump.
