Woman Charged in Hit-and-Run

RALEIGH -- Police have charged a Raleigh woman with a hit-and-run fatality last month, and charged her husband with accessory after the fact.

Officers say Tammie Medlin Dinwiddie, 26, was on her way home from her waitressing job when she hit Kenneth Lee Wales, 41, of Raleigh. He died in the hospital four hours after he was hit. Because the accident occurred after midnight when traffic was slight, Wales may have lain in the street 10 minutes before another driver stopped to help him.

Police said they charged Stephen Paul Dinwiddie, 31, partly because of statements they characterized as misleading.

Earlier on the night of the accident, police had been called to Crowley's in Stonehenge Market Place to handle a disturbance in which Wales was involved. Later, Wales was wandering across Creedmoor Road, and it was there he allegedly was hit by Tammie Dinwiddie as she drove her Jeep Cherokee south on that road.

Wales was a telecommunications engineer for Northern Telecom, married and the father of a daughter.

The Dinwiddies posted bond; she one for $15,000 and he for $5,000.
