The Newt Stories - Author's Notes

I have received emails from readers who have commented on my taking what is perhaps the most frightening Alien in recent memory and turning encounters with it into something erotic. I liken the Aliens to the vampire legend. When stories about vampires first entered popular culture last century, they were dark, evil, mysterious creatures and any encounter with one led to a horrific death. Then, over time, this image softened and now we have vampire movies that are almost soft porn. So - for me at least - Newt's stories are not a stretch given our species' insatiable quest for physical gratification and excitement.

When I started Newt's Tales, it began - as most series do - with one kinky erotic story about sex with one of the most well-known predatory Alien species in popular culture. The first story led to the second and so on. But as time went on and the characters fleshed themselves out, they began to take on a life of their own. I found myself growing quite fond of Newt in particular, despite - or maybe due to - her lack of hygiene, her lust for danger and sexual pain, and her immature mind and advanced sexualization. I also developed a soft spot for the brash and sadistic Glory, knowing her seeming hard exterior hid a heart as big as the world. After I had written Newt's Legacy - Glory and went back the next day to proof it, I found that I had tears in my eyes at its end. I had killed Newt off in Newt's Tale: Alone Again and - like Glory - missed that little girl terribly. For days afterward I was haunted by the image of that little girl laying alone on a filthy industrial floor waiting for an inevitable agonizing death.

Simply put - I needed to rescue her and that was how Newt's Legacy - Leto was born. It doesn't have a lot of the erotic in it, but it was a story I had to write for myself. If its sentimentality bothers you - oh well; win-some-lose-some. If it touches you, then all the better.

Despite the original Alien movies, every dark story about them doesn't have to have a tragic ending.
