The large bed creaked under his weight as he slid beneath the warm
sheets to join her. Sarah was still awake even though it was nearly
midnight. She couldn't sleep. Just knowing that he would be joining
her in the same bed put her nerves on edge.

Earlier in the evening she listened as he puttered around in the
kitchen, the sounds of pots and pans clanging before savory aromas
began to waft in through the doorway. He had entered the room soon
after the noise ceased, found her with her eyes closed, bought her lie.
His large hand felt her forehead once again, searching for signs of a
non-existent fever before gently brushing some errant hairs from her
face. He leaned down over her, his lips leaving a warm kiss on her
cheek before he retreated back to the dining room.

She laid there listening, the smell of meatloaf causing her stomach to
growl and grumble, but she refused to give in to her appetite. She
listened as he cleaned the dishes in the sink before retiring to the
shower to clean himself.

With the lights turned down and the air recirculators running at a
minimum, the rush of running water through the pipes above began to
lull her. She drifted in and out, her mind not quite asleep but trying to
dream anyway. When the water finally shut off she was almost adrift,
but the sound of the shower door closing caused her to jerk free from
dreamland with a start.

Now he was in bed with her, his shower hot skin sliding closer to her
fear chilled body. He moved slowly, trying not to wake her. He
pressed his front to her back, spooning against her, his arm draped
over her chest, hugging her tiny body to him. He might not have
been welcome, but the heat of his body sure was. She found it
soothing, comforting to be in his arms, and yet she couldn't stop her
heart from trying to leap out of her throat. He nuzzled his nose into
her hair, a soft kiss given to the top of her scalp.

"Good night, my angel."

His words were so softly spoken, so gentle. They nearly made her
rethink her earlier fears about the man who had stolen her from her
family, the man who had erased her mind, but then she felt it.

At first the soft tube of flesh merely rested on her thigh, nestled
between the cheeks of her bottom, but then it began to stir. She
could feel his pulse through it; feel as it began to move, twitching into
life. His breath, once steady and even, took on a more rapid pace.
The thick hair covering his chest scrubbed against her smooth back,
adding more heat, more urgency to his needs.

The shaft grew rigid as she laid perfectly still, her heart thumping
madly. His arm tightened around her, his calloused hand pressed
firmly over the slight rise of her breast, rubbing against her eraser
sized nipple. His knees drew up, contouring to match her own bent
legs, causing the head of his thing to run along her slit from back to
front.

She didn't want this to happen, not again, not when she knew who he
was and what he had done to her, but her body began to respond to
the contrary. An echo of Eve, some little part of her, still resided
within her mind, and with her came feelings for the man molesting
her. Her nipples grew stiff under his hand, stiff enough for him to
gently pinch and caress. Her breath soon matched his own rapid
tempo, her hips moving involuntarily, helping his hardness to delve
deeper into the crease of her sex.

"Oh..." she gasped quietly as the tip of his staff grazed over her
button. She became wet, the slippery juices flowing from her,
lubricating the path for him to follow. He refused, denied her body
what it had signaled for him to do. Instead he chose to keep up his
rhythmic humping on the outside of her, sliding, teasing, taunting.

"Please..."

She heard the pleading, the desperation, but could not believe it was
her own voice speaking.

"Please..."

"Not yet little one, not yet."

His answer frustrated her, infuriated her, and drove her to move her
own hips faster, squeeze her thighs tighter. "Pleeeeeeease..."

One of her hands dropped low, grazing the smooth skin of her belly,
lower and lower until she found the heat, the burning need for more.
Quick as a flash his hand left her breast to grasp her delicate wrist in
a vice-like grip.

"No," he growled as he pulled her hand free of her mound and held it
above her head. "Not yet."

"Hymmmm... Please... Please... hymmmm..." she whimpered,
begging for more contact than he was willing to give. He ignored her.

She felt empty, desperate to have something inside of her. It was like
an itch, a horrible itch within her, an itch that needed to be scratched
but she couldn't reach herself. It made her mad, crazy, angry; it
drove her to the brink of tears and the edge of maniacal laughter.
Her mind fought to find purchase, to keep its grip, but with every
pelvic thrust she began to lose that battle. Her teeth ground against
each other, her lips curled into a snarl. A low animal growl boiled up
from some primeval part of her left behind, forgotten by evolution.

His hand left her wrist; blood flowed where once circulation had been
cut off. It burned, it tingled, it felt as if millions of pins were pricking
her fingers, but at least it was something more. His fingers ran down
her arm, over her armpit, along her rib cage, down to her hips. He
found her bottom, squeezed the flesh of it hard. The action pulled her
cheeks apart, exposed her anus to the rasping of his pubic hair as he
ground against her. His shaft now reached its full thickness,
throbbing with need.

His hand left her bottom, left her completely, and she mourned its
loss, but only for a moment. His hips pulled back further than they
had before. She could feel the head of his thing bump against her
opening, fumbling for a target. She stopped her movements, waited,
waited, waited... waited for him to find home.

"OoohhhhHHHH! OH GAWD!" Her wail filled the room as he drove in
to the hilt. He didn't stop, didn't wait for her to adjust, one moment
she was empty, the next full to bursting.

The shock of him inside of her caused her mind to snap, the
sensations too much for her to process. Her eyes bulged and her jaw
dropped, held open in a silent cry. She should have felt pain, maybe
she was, but it certainly didn't register as such. After a moment
which felt like a lifetime, he began to move, pulling almost all the way
out before slamming back in.

"Omigod omigod omigod omigod!" she chanted with each tortuously
slow out stroke, "Uhng!" with every deep thrust into her core.

He held her tightly; one arm finding its way around her chest from
underneath, the other moving up from her waist to hold her throat just
below her chin. He tilted her head back until she could look past the
top of her head and see his flushed and strained face. Her wild eyes
locked on his own as his shaft pounded into her over and over again.

"I'm going to fill you baby... uhhgn... real soon now... uhhgn..."

"Yesss... Yesss... Oh God! Do it Grampa! Do it! I'm going to... to..."

"Wait... for me... baby... Just a... little... longer..."

"Oooo... Hurry! I... I... I can't stop it!"

"Wait... wait for me... almost... almost..."

His fingers found her lips, pressed into her mouth, and copied the
actions of his cock, muffling her groans. "Mmmmph... Mmmmph...
Mmmmph..."

She sucked on his digits, savored their presence. They filled another
void, plugged another place where an itch had erupted. She only
wished it were another cock, wished he could truly penetrate her from
both ends, wished she could feel him erupt simultaneously in mouth
and cunny.

"Now baby! Cum for me now!"

And she did. His command released the flood gates, her body
spasmed, twitching, thrashing, as pure pleasure washed over her in
waves. She could feel her insides clutching and relaxing, pulling on
his shaft as it plunged into her, milking him for his promise of cum.

Soon his growls topped her own in both volume and intensity. Fire,
he was shooting fire into her body; cleansing jets of molten lava that
burned away her awful itch. The itch now satisfied, she could
concentrate on feeling only pleasure as a second wave of bliss
cascaded over her.

As she came down from her place in heaven, she could taste
something metallic on her tongue, like a copper penny, only fluid. It
took her a moment to realize that his fingers were still hooked into her
mouth, her teeth still biting hard into them. She released her jaw and
let them slip free, just as he slipped from her other lips, both leaving a
slick trail on her skin.

He breathed raggedly into her hair, his voice filled with exhaustion.

"I love you, little one."

"I love you too, Grampa," she whispered into the dark.

In that moment she meant her words, but before sleep could finally
claim her, the chill had returned.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh, my sweet little child... I'm so sorry..."

Sarah awoke to the sounds of her Grampa sobbing, the room still
dark save for the red glow of the digital alarm clock. 3:00 am.

"Please forgive me... I thought you'd be safe... safer without me..."

He still lay in bed with her, still spooned against her back with his arm
around her protectively.

"I never meant for you to live in such misery... for you to hurt so much
inside..."

Sarah rolled over, a task made slightly difficult by the weight of the
arm draped over her.

"I only wanted what was best... for you... for us... for... for the world..."

In the dim light thrown off by the clock she could see his face. He
looked pained as tears streamed out of his closed eyes to soak his
pillow.

'He's dreaming.' Sarah watched as his eyes moved rapidly under
their lids, 'Having a nightmare.'

"I can't bear to lose you... not like this... not when we're so close..."

She thought about waking him, but decided against it. She wanted to
hear what he had to say.

"I know baby... I know... you've done so much... asked for so little in
return... The children are safe... safe as they can be... You've done
the right thing... I know... I know baby... It was hard, but it had to be
done..."

'Who's he talking to?' Sarah wondered.

"You have to go now... but I'll be with you soon..." He smiled in his
sleep. "I'm so proud of you, little one... Daddy loves you, Helen... and
I always will..."

He fell silent for a moment, his smile slowly dissolving back into a
relaxed state.

'Mommy? He's dreaming about Mommy? Why's he dreaming
about...'

"Nooooo!"

His sudden cry startled Sarah, nearly caused her to fall out of the bed
entirely.

"She's gone! She's gone! My Helen is goooonnnnnne..."

His cries trailed off into deep sobs, sobs filled with so much pain, so
much anger, so much guilt, so much loss, that Sarah found herself
wiping tears from her own eyes. She held him in her arms, held him
tight, whispering soothing words.

"It's okay Grampa. You're just having a bad dream. I'm here, I've got
you."

After a while his sobs transformed into snores, and soon after, Sarah
joined him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The smell of too many unwashed and frightened bodies burned her
nostrils in the cramped cargo area of the ship. She could barely
move because there were so many of them. She sat in her mother's
lap, could feel her still trembling beneath her as the ship rocked to
and fro. Her mother held her in place, her arms wrapped so tightly
around her that it almost hurt.

No one was speaking, most hung their heads in exhaustion, held their
tear streaked and dirty faces in blood spattered hands. Aside from
the rumble of the engines, the only sounds made were of desolate
sobbing and the occasional cry of a baby somewhere too far for her
to see.

Elissia broke the mournful silence, "Mommy?"

Her mother loosened her grip slightly. "Yes baby."

"Why do they hate us so much? Why won't they just leave us
alone?"

She felt her mother's hot tears as they dripped onto her bare
shoulder. "I don't know, baby. I don't know."

The ships sound system crackled to life. "Everyone hang on! We've
hit another blockade!"

At first Elissia was thrilled to hear her father's voice, she hadn't seen
him since they left the colony three days ago, but when the ship really
started to rock and the other children began to cry, all she could think
about was being brave.

'That's what Daddy told me to do. Be brave for Mommy. So that's
what I'll do. I'll be brave. I won't cry.'

A thunderous boom filled the room, triggering screams of terror from
some of the refugees.

'I won't cry. I won't cry. I won't cry.'

More booms, more rocking. The lights flickered wildly on and off.

'I won't cry. I won't cry. I won't...'

KAROOOOMB!

Sparks flew in all directions, smoke filled the air. Red lights flashed
as screams battled for dominance over a blaring alarm.

'I won't cry! I won't cry! I won't cry!'

The ship violently shuddered, sending people falling to the floor,
slamming them into the walls with wet thuds and hard cracks.

'I WON'T CRY! I WON'T CRY!'

KAROOOOMB!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"AAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhh..." Allen sat up in his bed, dripping
with sweat, clutching his sheets, "Jesus fuck!"

He sat there panting, trying to catch his breath as the last few
moments of the dream kept playing and replaying in his head. The
room was still dark; the auto-lights hadn't yet begun to illuminate his
quarters. They were set to begin at 5:45 am, fifteen minutes before
Allen needed to be awake, so it had to be earlier than that. A quick
glance at the clock confirmed his assumption, 4:30 am.

'Well, there's no way in hell I'm getting back to sleep now; Might as
well get an early start.'

His legs felt heavy as he swung them over the edge of the mattress
and he came to his feet.

"Lights on, half illumination," He spoke to no one, but his request was
answered by the computer. Even at fifty percent, the lights still
bothered his eyes.

After an extra long soak in the shower, and the biggest breakfast he
had prepared for himself in years, he felt much better. It was still
early, too early for anyone else in his research team to be around, but
he made his way to the labs anyway.

After spending the previous day tied up with Malcolm, he was sure
that the never ending paper work would be piled high on his desk. To
his utter surprise, the pile left behind from yesterday ended up being
rather light compared to most days. His team had carried on without
him, doing the work they were supposed to do. All of the test animals
were secured in their new homes, the supplies had been unpacked,
logged in, and shelved in the proper places, and even the daily
progress reports were filed correctly.

'Hmmmm. I guess I should put more trust in these guys. I have to
stop thinking like a team member and more like a project head.
Delegate responsibility, give feedback, push when they need to be
pushed, then sit back and wait for results.'

Allen sat back and spun in his chair. "So what should I do while they
do the work?"

As the chair completed its second rotation he put his feet back down
and stood up. "MERI, I haven't tinkered with you in ages."

The MERI device was housed in its own lab attached to the
Neurology department. From the outside it looked like an MRI; a big
imposing box with a tubular opening in its center, through which a
table-like gurney could be slid, positioning the patient's head dead
center within the tube. Like an MRI device, most of the MERI was
constructed out of non-metallic substances due to the powerful
magnets used during scanning, but that's where the similarities
ended.

MRIs are non-invasive scanners, designed to look but not touch. The
MERI, on the other hand, was designed to delve into a persons mind,
translate electrical and biochemical activity into information, and then
reproduce thoughts, dreams, and memories as a viewable format.
Usually that format was high-definition three dimensional
holographics, but in the past it had been video. The process also
worked in reverse, allowing created materials to be implanted into the
subjects mind as if they were their own experiences.

Allen had found the MERI as an abandoned project, left over from the
sixties. The original designers had gotten it to work, but not very well. It
was Allen who dusted the old equipment off, read and re-read all of
the research, and then discovered and corrected the mistakes. This
was his baby, his pride and joy. That's why, when he entered his
clearance code and entered the MERI lab to find his machine already
powered up and being fed a new program, he was pissed.

"Who the fuck? What the hell?" he sputtered and fumed as he sat
behind the operator's console. "God damned idiots! Who left this
running? I'm gonna fucking kill..."

He fell silent as his eyes scanned the computer screen and found his
own name next to the "currently logged in" display. A quick review of
the data being processed into MERI transferable files almost made
his heart stop.

"Fifty terabytes? My God, if someone actually put that in their head
they'd be fried beyond... UHGN!"

Sharp pain stung the side of his neck, accompanied by a hiss. He
knew instantly by the sound that someone had just injected him with
something. His muscles went weak, his eyes blurred, and then he fell
to the floor. By the time he hit the ground he was out cold.

"I'm sorry Dr. Reed." Dr. Paul brought his form back into the visible
spectrum, stepped out from behind the Veil. "I need to borrow your
machine."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oh, damn it! Eve, wake up, the alarm didn't go off," Malcolm
grumbled as he rolled off the opposite side of the bed. "Come on, up,
up, up! We're late!"

Sarah pulled a pillow over her head to block out the now blazing
lights. "But I'm not feeling good. Can't I just stay home today?"

"Not a chance, little one." Mal stumbled as he tried to pull his pants
on too fast. "You have your lessons today and I have to get down to
Dr. Carson's labs to see his latest results. I'm supposed to be
there..." he glanced at the clock, "Eight? I needed to be there thirty
minutes ago! Out of bed sleepy head. Let's get a move on."

Sarah groaned but obeyed, though at a snail's pace. She winced as
she moved her legs, her privates still sore from her time with Grampa
last night.

"Do I hafta?"

"Yes! Now come on, you have until I'm finished checking my
messages. I'm sure Dr. Carson's become quite irate with me already,
he set this meeting up over a month ago." Mal buttoned up his shirt
and left the room for his office. Once behind his desk he pulled his
black socks up and slid his feet into leather shoes. He took a deep
breath before logging into the computer system to check his mail.

'Nothing? Not one single message? Not even the morning briefs?'

He checked the calendar to confirm that today was in fact the correct
day.

'Friday, August seventeenth. No mistake. What's going on here?'

His fingers began to race over the keyboard, searching for some
answers.

ACCESS DENIED

"What?" He tried again but received the same results.

ACCESS DENIED

"Shit." He stood up and began to pace back and forth, his mind racing
and his heart thumping. "Shit, shit, shit. Think, Malcolm, think. If
they're coming, what will be their next move?"

His thoughts were interrupted by a pounding on the office door.

'Oh fuck. Not yet, we're not ready yet.' Mal ran back into his living
quarters. "Eve! Get to your room, NOW!"

She shuffled out of his room, scratching her scalp through a tangled
mess of blond bed-head. "What did I do?"

"Nothing, just, don't argue. Get in, and, and then wait for me, okay?"

"Why are you yelling?"

"Just do as I ask. Get in, close the door and don't let anyone in
except for me."

"Kay." Another round of pounding stopped her in her tracks but a
glare from Malcolm got her moving again.

When her door closed Mal returned to his office and the loud
banging. This time it was accompanied by a voice.

"Dr. Whelan? I need to speak to you urgently."

Mal moved to the door but didn't unlock it. "What's going on?"

The voice sounded relieved. "Thank God, I thought I was too late.
Sir, Mr. Reynolds gave explicit orders that in the event of a possible
change of leadership, I am to escort you and your granddaughter
safely out of the building."

Mal still didn't trust the man outside. "Did he tell you anything else?"

"Yes Sir. He said to say that everything happens for a reason."

Mal nearly collapsed with relief, Jon had pulled through yet again.
"Hold on, I'm opening the door."

After typing in the lock-out code the door slid open and the security
guard rushed inside. He was nervous, his face blanched white and
dripping with sweat.

"Sir, there isn't much time. They already have control of the Sec-
Com Station, which means they know that I'm here. We have to get
moving."

Mal closed the door behind the man before rushing to the door
leading into his home. "Eve! It's safe, come out!"

Her door opened immediately and she eyed the security guard warily.
"What's going on?"

"Trouble, Eve, trouble. This is a friend of your Uncle Jon. He's going
to help us." Mal pulled her close and then asked the guard, "What
now?"

"We have to get to the elevators at the end of this hallway. Jon set
up a back-door program to cancel out the security lock-downs." The
man opened the door just wide enough for himself and peeked out in
either direction. "He gave me the password..."

His body gave a slight jerk as his sentence abruptly ended. For a
moment he stood there, frozen in place, before tumbling to the
ground in a heap.

"Oh God, no!" Mal pushed Eve back into their quarters, but not before
she saw the reason why the man had fallen. Nearly half of his face
was missing, burned away by a blast of plasma. What had been
contained by skin and skull was now exposed in gruesome detail.

"AIIIIIIIIIEEEEE!"

Her high pitched scream rang out before Mal could cover her mouth
with his hand. His first thought was to pull the man's body into his
office to clear the doors but there was no time, "Back inside, quick!"

Once back in the living room, he closed the doors to his office and
locked them.

"Computer!" he called while rushing into the kitchen. "Run program
'Hadrian's Wall'."

At his command the computer system severed itself from the main
server and began to run independently. It took control of all the
home's environmental systems and activated a series of firewalls and
anti-intrusion software to protect itself. The air ducts sealed with a
clang, blocking any airborne attacks. No one would be getting inside
anytime soon, at least not without a hell of a lot of cutting.

Eve stood in place shaking, the horror of what she had just witnessed
too much to deal with. Her eyes followed the wild antics of her
Grampa as he returned from the kitchen, a sharpened chef's knife in
his left hand. To her disbelief she watched as he grabbed the blade
with his right hand and pulled, slicing his palm wide open.

"Grampa, no! What are you doing?"

"Not now Eve." He sucked in air through clenched teeth as the blade
finished its work. He stepped to the closed doors, the only way into
or out of their quarters, and slapped his open wound against them,
spattering blood in all directions. He pulled his dripping hand away
from the white doors leaving a vermilion hand print behind in stark
contrast.

"Shinquala neestrium."

A violet flash, as if someone had just snapped a Polaroid, blinded
Sarah as she stared at the bloody door. Lines of crimson spread out
in all directions from the hand. Swirling, curving, beautiful calligraphy
appeared within a spider's web of intricate designs.

"Good." Malcolm tore a sleeve from his shirt and wrapped it around
his hand, stemming the flow of blood. "I was afraid the lines were too
old, but it looks like the spell is going to hold."

"What is it?" Sarah found her voice, though quavering and quiet.

"A spell to keep them out a little while longer, I hope. If they try to
bypass the locks or cut their way in, that spell will keep the doors
closed, unless they use a counter spell, but I doubt they will."

Sarah ran to her Grampa, leapt into his arms and held on tight.
"What's going on?"

"They're coming, little one."

"Who? Who's coming?"

"Bad men. They want to take you away, but I'm not going to let that
happen."

"Why?" she sobbed, "Why me?"

Mal kissed her head and hugged her close. "They want you because
you are special, because one day you will save us all.

"I don't want to be special; I just want to go home."

"I know baby, I know. I thought I could protect you here, keep you
safe from them, keep you hidden until you were ready. Now it looks
like I was wrong. I'm sorry, Sarah."

At first his using her real name went right over her head, but then it hit
her like a ton of bricks. "You, you know?"

"Yes little one."

"But... how?"

"I knew you were up to something these last few days, but I didn't
know what exactly. I had a feeling you were somehow different
yesterday when Allen and I came back here to talk, but I wasn't
positive until last night, when we... when we made love."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

"What could I have said? I took you away from everything that you
knew and loved. I wiped away all traces of who you were. I made
you do things that normal eleven year olds don't do. I just assumed
that you hated me, and you would have had good reason to do so."

Sarah gripped him tighter. He was right. Well, almost. She had
hated him, hated him more than she had hated anyone before, but
things were different now. Eve hadn't been eradicated, she'd been
integrated. She was a part of Sarah, and that part still loved her
Grampa, despite the things he'd done. The Sarah part of her had
softened as well. Listening to him as his heart broke while sleeping,
his pleas for forgiveness, and his pitiful moans full of deep pain, all
had turned her in some way. Now, as he held her trembling body in
his arms, she felt safe. He really was trying to protect her as Dr. Paul
had tried to explain. He wasn't her enemy, the people outside the
door were.

"Grampa, I don't ha..."

KREEEENNNNNNGGGGGGG!!!!!

The scream of metal and the smell of acrid smoke filled the room.
Already, several areas of the door glowed orange as the men on the
other side used plasma cutters to make a new way in. They were
coming, and nothing was going to stop them.
