I sat on the hot street trying to catch my breath, each inhalation sending
stabbing pain out from my ribs. I tried to stand but a wave of nausea
and dizziness made me sit right back down. I felt like crap, and the little
girl's near constant chatter wasn't helping my throbbing head any.

"When they see what you did to Otho they are gonna be soooo pissed.
How did you do it anyway? I didn't know that he could just melt away
like that. Do you have some powers? How did you learn that kind of
magic? We've been driving for soooo long; I didn't think we'd ever stop.
Where is this place, huh? Do you live here? Looks like a nice place, are
your owners home?" On and on she went, barely stopping to take a
breath.

"Hey, boy, are you listening to me?"

"Please!" I grumbled at her while pressing my palms against my
temples. "My head is killing me. Can you be quiet for a minute?"

She sat herself down in the middle of the street in front of me, drawing
her knees up to her chest and hugging them tight.

"Sorry... I talk a lot when I'm nervous. I've never been without a master
before and I don't know what to do with myself. Hey! Are you all alone
too? Did your master melt away like mine did? Did you kill 'im?"

"Stop!" Her constant stream of questions was making my head swim. I
didn't mean to yell quite so harshly at her, but my stomach was about to
heave for the second time today, and I hate getting sick.

"Sorry..." Her lower lip pouted and began to quiver slightly. "I know I talk
too much, I can't help it." Then the waterworks came. "Otho always told
me to keep my mouth shut, but... but... I don't know... why... I... can't..."
Her shoulders started shaking with sobs. "Otho was right... I'm bad.
No... No wonder... nobody wah... wants me..."

Christ, it was bad enough sitting here feeling like hell because some big
asshole, I guess his name was Otho, just beat the living shit out of me,
but now I had made the little girl I was trying to save cry. Boy, when it
rains it fuckin pours, doesn't it! Seems no matter what I did today it was
going to get all fucked up.

An odd thing happened while I listened to her quiet sobbing. Yeah, like
everything else that had happened so far wasn't odd, but this was
different. This didn't have anything to do with solar flares or psycho
bikers. This was something that was happening inside of me. The
agony I had been feeling, my broken bones and bleeding skin, just didn't
seem as bad. Hearing her cry, the pain and loneliness in her quavering
voice, it... it was breaking my heart.

I forced myself to stand on wobbly legs. The world spun and for a
moment, I thought I was going to collapse onto the blacktop again, but I
stuck it out. The pain was blinding as I made my way to her. It was no
more than six or seven steps, but it felt like I was crossing through hell
itself.

She was curled up in a little ball by the time I reached her, with her head
lowered to her upraised knees. The welts crisscrossing her back were
purple and puffy, the skin broken in some places and healed over with
brown scabs. Bright red blood still trickled out of some of her new
wounds. Scraped knees, banged shins, and even a few grass stains
marred her golden skin. Her sobbing hadn't slowed in the least since
she'd begun, and wet tears dripped on the hot street below with a sizzle.
I've never had to comfort someone before, so I wasn't really sure what to
say.

"Come on... stop crying... I... I didn't mean to yell at you." I knelt next to
her, the surface of the street digging into my knee. "I'm sorry... come
on... stop crying."

She continued sobbing, but she looked up at me, her eyes puffy and red.
"Who's gonna take care of me now?"

"I will." The words were out of my mouth before I even knew that I was
speaking, but the effect they had on her were instantaneous.

"Really?" she smiled through her tears.

"Yes, really. Now, come on, I've got to get you inside before someone
thinks I'm some kind of pervert." I reached out my hand and she took it.
Her hand was so tiny compared to mine, and as I helped her to her feet
she seemed to weigh almost nothing at all.

She was beaming up at me with the happiest face I had ever seen, and
her cheeks went rosy as she squealed, "Really really? You're really
gonna take care of me?"

"Yes, really! Now come on, let's get out of the street and into the
house." I started walking to the door, but she stayed rooted to the same
spot in the middle of the road.

"What's wrong now?" I asked, getting a little annoyed.

"I... I can't." Her head was downcast, hands behind her back as she
dragged her left foot from side to side on the street.

"Why not? My house is right there." I pointed at the still wide-open
doorway less than twenty steps away.

Her right hand moved back into view. She was holding the end of the
leash that was still connected to the black collar around her neck, the
long heavy chain dragging on the ground by her feet. I blinked a few
times because I didn't remember seeing it when I helped her to stand up,
but I but I must have missed it.

"Just take it off," I told her.

"I... I can't." She kept her eyes on the street below.

"Well, let me see if I can get it off for you," I grumbled while hobbling
back to her.

She kept her head bowed as I moved behind her to inspect the collar. It
was at that moment that I realized that this was the first time I had ever
been so close to a nude girl. I hadn't even seen my older sister naked
before, even though I had tried a few times in the past. The only
experiences that I've had sexually all involved porn and my own hand.
I've never even been out on a date before, and now I was standing
behind a completely naked, real girl. If I hadn't been in so much pain or
the situation not as fucked up as it was, I would have been sporting one
of the biggest hardons of my life.

'No. No. No,' I chastised myself, 'she's just a little girl... and she's hurt...
don't even think that way.'

I shook my head to clear away those thoughts before brushing her silky
hair out of the way to expose the back of the collar. My nostrils were
assailed by the sweet aroma of honey-suckle, my favorite scent in the
whole world. The heavy scent of those tiny flowers, with their drops of
sweet nectar inside, had my head spinning with old memories.

When I was younger and my family still actually did things together, we
would go out on family picnics in the park. We'd stay there all day,
barbecuing and playing tag and other games. As the sunset we would
sit in the grass to watch as the stars began to appear, and my father
would point out the different constellations, navigating us through the
night sky. My sister and I, laughing and running, would try to catch fire-
flies as they blinked like the stars above, but floating low enough for us
to hold within our grasp. We were happy then. We were a family, and
through it all... the sweet fragrance of honey-suckle filled the air.

Every time I smell those flowers I'm transported back to those times.
Back before my older sister was too cool to talk to me, back before my
mother would pick fights with my father because her life wasn't what she
had hoped it would be, and back before my father got lost in his work,
leaving us to navigate the constellations all alone.

It took me a moment to realize that I wasn't actually smelling flowers, but
the light perfume wafting off of the tiny girl in front of me. The scent
made me feel a little giddy. I found myself fixated by her bare neck. I
traced a delicate line with my finger up from her bare shoulder, over the
black collar, up to a spot just behind her tiny ear. She shivered slightly
as I did so, goose flesh rising at my touch. Her skin was so soft and
smooth, I found myself wanting to kiss it for some reason, but then I
remembered that she was just a little girl and that I was acting like a
pervert. So I shook away my impure thoughts and returned to my task.

I looked for some way to open the collar, but there were no buckles,
snaps or any other ways to unlock it. Not even the chain offered an
option to remove it.

"How did he get this on you?" I asked while spinning the black collar
around her throat looking for a seam or anything that might reveal an
answer to its operation.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"Otho... how did he get this on you?"

"Oh! No, he didn't put it on me."

"Then who did?"

"I don't know, I've always had it on."

"Was it always this tight?" I asked while trying unsuccessfully to slip a
finger between the leather and her skin.

"Yep."

"Doesn't it choke you? I mean, if it's always been tight, wouldn't it choke
you as you grew up?"

"No. It kinda just stays the right size, I guess."

I was confused but determined now to get this thing off.

"Let me try to cut it off, I have some scissors inside the house."

"That won't work," she mumbled.

"Why not?"

"Lotsa people tried to cut it off before; it won't come off that way."

"Okay, so what do we do, huh? I can't leave you sitting in the middle of
the street, and you won't move with this thing on you?"

"Here!" She spun around to face me again, her hair whirling. "Take this
and then I can go with you!"

She was smiling again as she held out the end of the leash to me.

"Whoah!" I backed a step away from her with my hands up. "I'm not
going to drag you around with that thing!"

"But... but... you said you would take care of me!" Her lips were
trembling again; tears couldn't be too far behind.

"I know I said that I would take care of you, and I will." I tried to sound
comforting, but the idea of leading a little girl around on a leash really
freaked me out for some reason. "But it wouldn't be right for me to... to
treat you like a dog or something."

"Please," she begged me, "I can't go with you if you don't."

God, what have I gotten myself into now? I had to do something. I
couldn't leave her out here naked and baking in the hot sun all alone
while I tried to get a hold of the police. I just had to rationalize the
situation. All I had to do was get her into the house, once she was
inside I could let go of her leash. That wouldn't be too bad, now, would
it?

"Okay, okay, don't start crying again. Just give me your leash so we can
go inside."

"You promise to take care of me?" she asked while wiping away the
tears that had started to form in the corners of her eyes.

"Yeah, I promise. Now, give me your leash so that we can get moving."
I stuck out my hand and waited for her to offer the leather handle to me
again.

"Goodie!" she giggled as she dropped the handle in my open palm.

Have you ever experienced one of those moments that just seem to
hang on forever? I swear, time nearly stopped as the leash fell from her
hand into mine. A million little details flooded my senses in the fraction
of a second it took for the leather strap to land. The smell of fresh cut
lawns, the buzz of insects drying their wings of morning dew, the whistle
of steam coming from the busted radiator of the van, the glints of
sunlight blinking off of the chrome surface of the chain... all of it,
everything that was happening at that very moment, came through in
crystal clear detail.

The instant the leather handle made contact with the skin of my hand,
my life changed forever. I could actually feel it happen. One second I
was Justin Taylor, just another thirteen year old pissed off at the world
and everyone in it. The next... Well... I'm not quite sure, but I did feel
better.

My broken body healed, I no longer felt any pain. My headache
evaporated away, and for the first time in a long while I... I think I felt
happy. More than happy. I felt so good that I didn't have anything to
compare it to, but I imagine it was what it feels like to win the lottery or a
game show or like getting that one special present on Christmas that
you thought your parents had forgotten.

I barely had a chance to comprehend what was happening when, with
no warning, she jumped into my arms. Her arms wrapped around my
neck as her legs did the same around my waist. Her naked body
pressed hard against mine as she embraced me. Instinctively my own
arms went around her, one behind her back, the other holding her tiny
bottom. I stumbled backwards from the sudden weight in my arms as
her head nuzzled against the side of my head. She was whispering into
my ear, though I'm not sure if she was really talking to me.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you," over and over
again like a chant, she whispered, her breath like a feather on my ear
lobe.

I just stood there, stunned, as she clung to me. Once again I found
myself in a situation for which I had no experience to draw upon. All I
knew was that I was now standing in my front yard with a naked ten year
old girl hugging me. My right hand held a leash attached to her neck,
my left hand was holding her by her bare ass. If anyone saw me I'd
have to answer a shitload of questions that I didn't have any answers for.
I started to panic. 'What would my parents have to say about all of this?'

So, with my heart pounding in my chest, my face burning with
embarrassment, and my arms full of a nude child, I beat a clumsy path
to my front door, slamming it shut the moment I was inside.

Now, why hadn't I thought of carrying her earlier? We would have been
inside a hell of a lot sooner, and I wouldn't have wasted all that time
playing around with her collar. Sometimes I really think I am an idiot.

"Okay, you can get down now, we're inside," I said with my back pressed
against the front door. I felt hot, sweaty and sticky after being outside,
and the girl clinging to me wasn't helping.

She locked her hands behind my neck and leaned back so that she
could look into my face. Her big brown eyes were sparkling almost as
brightly as her smile.

"Do I hafta?"

I had to smile back; she did look cute as she batted her eye lashes at
me.

"Yeah, you have to."

"Why?"

"Because I need to try the phone again."

"Why?"

"Because I have to call the police," I started walking to the living room
while she still clung to me.

"Why?"

"Because Otho did a lot of bad things and I have to tell them."

"What will they do then?"

I got to the couch and sat down hard. She let out a little squeal and
giggle as we both bounced a few times on the new cushions.

"Well?" she asked, still sitting in my lap.

"Well what?"

"What will these poleeze do when you tell them?" She said the word
police like she had never heard of them before.

"Well, they'll come here and ask us lots of questions about what
happened, then they'll ask you who your parents are and..."

"I don't have any parents," she cut me off.

"Everyone has parents."

"I don't." She released my neck and scooted back a little on my thighs.

"Who took care of you before Otho?"

"Other people."

"But not your parents?"

"Nope. I don't have any." She didn't sound sad or upset about this at all,
in fact, she just kept right on smiling.

"Well I have parents, and I know that if I were missing, they would want
the person who found me to call the police and let them know. Are you
sure you don't have any parents?"

"No parents."

"Any family?"

"Nope."

"Anyone that used to take care of you, nice people, not like Otho?"

She thought for a moment, her head cocked to the side like an animal
listening for danger. "Nope... all of them were like Otho. All of them 'cept
for you."

She leaned in real close and gave me a peck on the cheek. I blushed
and started to feel uncomfortable again.

"Umm... ah... You need to get off of me so... so I can try the phone," I
stammered.

"To call those poleeze people?"

"Yeah."

"Who are they? Are they your masters? Cause Otho was my master
and I always had to answer his questions and..."

"No," this time I cut her off, "they aren't my masters. I don't have any
masters."

"Then who takes care of you?"

"My parents take care of me."

"Oh... then who are the poleeze?"

I was amazed; she really didn't know who the police were. Where the
hell did that Otho dude keep her? In a cave?

I tried to explain. "Well... uh... the police are a group of people who
protect us from bad people."

"Are they warriors?"

"No... Well... not really. They do carry guns and shoot at bad guys, but
they don't fight battles or anything like that. Well, except for the gangs,
or the mob, but they don't fight in wars. Well, there is the war on drugs,
but that isn't a real war, well, not like Iraq." I was rambling and I knew it,
but she listened intently to every dumb word that came out of my mouth.
"Mostly they give tickets to people who drive to fast, and catch people
who steal stuff.

"Wow! They sound neat! What do they look like? Are they big and
powerful? Do they use magic?"

"No... They don't use magic, they are just... you know... regular people."

"So, how do you know if someone is a poleeze and not just another
person?"

"Well, they wear blue uniforms and drive police cars... Oh, and they have
badges that say they are police officers."

Her face suddenly went white and her eyes got real big. "Not the red
lights!"

"Yeah, they have red lights that flash on their cars, why?"

She started shaking, her lip trembling as she spoke.

"Don't call them... not the red lights. They're bad. They'll take me away
and I don't wanna go away. Please don't call them! Oh, please, oh,
please, oh, please don't let them take me away!" she begged as fresh
tears came to her eyes.

"The police are good, not bad. They'll help us."

"No! No! No! I won't go! They're bad! They hurt people like me!" She
jumped off my lap and ran behind my dad's Laz-E-Boy recliner to hide.

"They're not going to hurt you!" I got up and slowly moved to the chair
she was crouched behind. "The police are the good guys."

"Not all of them... some are like Otho... they're mean... they'll hurt me...
and you."

"Who told you that?" I crouched down next to the trembling girl. "Did
Otho tell you that the police were bad?"

"No. He didn't hafta. The red lights are the ones who gave me to Otho.
They're mean; please don't call them... please."

"Okay, okay. I won't call them." I reached out my hand to her, but she
just eyed me warily.

"You promise not to," she asked.

"I promise, now come out from there." She smiled and took my extended
hand. Once she was on her feet I walked her back to the couch. She
was still a little shook up.

"I still have to try the phone, though, I have to try and call my parents."
She nodded her head and sat on the couch.

"But no poleeze, right?" she asked.

"No police."

"Goodie. You're a nice boy. I'm glad you're my new master."

"Your what?" I pulled my hand free of hers.

"My new master!" she beamed at me.

"Don't call me that!" I could feel my face burning red.

"Why not?"

"Because... I don't like it, okay?" I've never felt so uncomfortable in my
life; it was almost as bad as when my mom caught me whacking off.

"Okay... then what should I call you, boy?"

"Justin."

"What's a Justin?" she asked while cocking her head to the side.

"It's my name." Suddenly I realized that I didn't know her name. "What's
your name?"

She smiled brightly up at me.

"Ayumi."
