Ayumi (c) Chapter Ten By Fiction Writer #13 (rom, nosex, paranormal, magic, teen, pt) Somehow the sun didn't feel as hot as we trekked further down the path. There was a lightness to my steps, as if all the weight that I had been carrying was simply left behind with the dead Zyrogoth. No one was chasing us. No one was hunting us. We were free and clear. All that had to be done now was to get to the city, hopefully before the sun sank behind the hills, and find someone who could offer some help. Ayumi trudged along beside me, apparently still hung up on the Wizard who was heading off in the opposite direction. She offered me a slight smile whenever I caught her checking back over her shoulder for any signs of him, but other than that she kept her head down and her legs moving. Her lack of enthusiasm as my traveling companion irked me, but I found ways to keep my mind off my rising anger. Mostly I messed around with the nifty dagger I'd picked up off the ground. I'd never really been into swords or any of the fantasy stuff; that is, until I started listening to Led Zeppelin. You can only listen to so many songs before you start wondering what the hell the lyrics are about, and that led me to JRR Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings. The first book took me forever to read, but thankfully Peter Jackson made things simpler by turning them into movies. Ever since then I've developed this thing for swords, though my Mom won't let me buy any. As I twisted the dagger this way and that, watching as the sunlight danced over its highly polished surface, I imagined that I was a warrior on a quest. I was Strider, the Ranger in the Tolkien stories, the last of his kind, and I was charged with protecting Ayumi on her journey to the stronghold of Highland. This kept me entertained for at least an hour as I practiced my dodging and parrying. Once in a while I even made Ayumi smile, especially when I would dart ahead to decapitate Orcs (tall weeds) who stood in our path. When the fun of the dagger began to fade I started thinking back to Mr. Johnson and how much he'd changed since I'd last seen him. Back when Tommy and I were close, he was a really nice guy, timid almost. I would never have pictured him one day slaying a demon, especially not in cold blood like that. He was never devious, at least not that I knew of, and never aggressive. I can't even remember a time when he raised his voice now that I think of it. To see him stab that demon, and then to laugh about it; well... it was just strange. The world really was turning upside down. "Ouch." I barely heard her over the crunch of the gravel and dirt, but I caught the pained expression that crossed her face. "Something wrong?" "It... it's nothing." She winced, but kept walking. "If it's nothing, then you can just say what it is." She remained silent. "Ayumi?" Still no response; now I was getting annoyed. "Damn it, Ayumi. Just say what's bothering you." "No, I said it's nothing." She rolled her eyes at me. "Drop it." The anger that'd been simmering within me began to boil. I thought I knew what was bothering her, and it really pissed me off. "Jesus Christ, Yumi. That fuckin' Wizard is long gone. He didn't want us to follow him, he told us to keep going this way. If you're so hung up on running off after him, then just fucking go! I don't need this shit." She stopped suddenly, and I had to turn back to face her. Her face was strained and tears threatened to break free from the corners of her eyes. "You, you want me to... to go away?" "No, but apparently I'm not good enough for you. Ever since you saw what that scuzzy Wizard was able to do you haven't been interested in following me anymore." I kicked a large chunk of dried up dirt which exploded in a puff of dust. "I've seen you looking back, hoping he would come to take you away. If that's how you feel, then... then just go. I'm sure he'll do a better job of protecting you than I have." Her eyes bored into me. Tears finally ran out of her eyes and streaked down her dirty cheeks, leaving a trail of clean skin in their wake. Her lips quivered before turning into a snarl. "You're an idiot!" She spat on the ground between my feet. "You don't know anything!" I expected her to turn and head back the way we came, but instead she shoved me out of her way and continued heading toward the city. I watched her walking away, and my anger erupted. No one spits at me and calls me an idiot. "Where the fuck do you think you're going?" She kept walking. "Hey! I asked where the hell you think you're going?" I hurried ahead to catch up. "You called me an idiot but you're the one going in the wrong direction!" "Fuck you," she muttered under her breath. "Fuck me? Fuck me?" I got in front of her and blocked the path. "Fuck you! You drag me into this mess and then treat me like shit? What the hell is going on in that head of yours, huh? I didn't start this... you did! Now turn your little ass around and go after your Wizard friend. That's what you want to do, isn't it?" "No!" She hauled off and punched me in the stomach before I could block her. "You're an idiot! A stupid, stupid dummy!" Her punch wasn't strong enough to knock the wind out of me, but it was a warning that I should keep my guard up. She'd kicked me in the nuts before, and I wasn't going to let that happen again. "Just admit it, Yumi. You don't want to come with me, you want to go and find that guy." I spoke while dodging a number of wildly thrown punches. "Say it, say that I'm right. Go on... admit it!" "No!" She gave up punching and began to kick. "No... I... won't!" "Why not? It's the truth, isn't it?" One of her kicks landed her ankle right in my hand, and I held on tight as she struggled to pull it free while hopping on one leg. "No! Stop it! Leave me alone!" "I'll leave you alone if you just admit it. There's no sense in lying, just tell me... you wished you had gone off with him and not me. That's why you keep looking back over your shoulder, and that's why you've been giving me the silent treatment, and that's why you were crying!" She growled at me, a feral sound that reminded me of a wild dog that had been cornered. She bared her teeth as she gave up the struggle to regain control of her captured leg. Suddenly her two black wings appeared out of nowhere and swooped down, boxing my ears so hard it set them ringing. I let go of her foot and stumbled on the loose gravel before falling hard on my ass. "You are a stupid boy, Justin! Nothing but a stupid boy!" She stood over me with her wings swept upward and her teeth menacingly displayed. I rubbed my ears but stayed on the ground where I fell. "So you admit it then. You wished it had been him and not me that found you." "NO!" She shook her head and rolled her eyes, her hands on her hips. "I don't!" "Then what? Why are you being such a little bitch?" "I'm not the one being a little bitch, you are." Her wings drooped. "I was looking back because I was worried about the Melchior coming after us, you dummy." "That's bullshit." I pulled myself up off the ground. "You heard Mr. Johnson. They were ordered to call off the hunt." "Oh, yeah? I guess demons are known for doing what they're told, right?" She rolled her eyes again. "Demons do what demons want to do. They don't take orders, 'specially not from a human. They could have waited for Mr. Johnson to leave and then started to come after us again." Alright, she had a point there. Maybe I was a little naive to think that our troubles were over, but there was more going on than just her watching our backs. "Okay, then why were you crying? Huh?" "I was crying 'cos it hurts." "What hurts?" Her wings drooped even further until they touched the ground, "Keeping them hidden." "What, your wings?" She nodded. "Why?" "The Veil, it's... falling apart. It's getting harder and harder to pull it around my wings and my..." Her eyes fell to the ground. "Your wings and your... your what?" She kicked the dirt. "And my... tail." I was a bit stunned. "Your what?" "My tail." "You have a tail?" She let out a long sigh. "Yeah." "Why didn't you tell me?" "I don' know. I didn' know what you would think, so I jus' kept it hidden." "You showed me your wings already, what difference would a tail make?" She gave another deep sigh. "I don't like it very much." "Why?" "It's ugly." I chuckled and offered her a smile. "How could anything about you be ugly? You're beautiful." She tilted her head to the side and let a small smile creep across her lips when I said she was beautiful. I meant what I said, too. She really was beautiful, even though she was so young. In a way, she kind of reminded me of this girl from school, Dianne Cho. She's Asian too, and I'd had a crush on her since we met back in the third grade. She was a new student at the time, and we sat next to each other everyday in class. She was my first crush, and I carried a torch for her up until last year. After my big blowout with Tommy I finally got up the balls to ask her out. She laughed and said she wasn't interested in me, but she was interested in Tommy. Fucking bitch. The worse part wasn't that she didn't like me, nor was it when she laughed in my face for even daring to think that she might, it was later that day... when I found her on her knees sucking Tommy's cock in the men's room at school. She didn't even acknowledge that I was there; she just kept on sucking him as if she was poisoned and Tom's spunk was the antidote. Tom sure noticed me though... fucking prick smiled at me as he grabbed her by the hair and made her gag. I took off after that, his laughter following me down the hall as I made my way for the school's exit. She clung to his side like a well trained dog after that day, she and all the other girls in her little clique. Tommy had been dating Debbie Ferguson at the time, one of the other girls in that clique, but she didn't seem to mind sharing him with her friends. "You think I'm... beautiful?" Ayumi asked timidly. I smiled and nodded. "Really?" "Yes, really." She blushed a bit and shyly averted her eyes from my stare. "Can I see it?" "What?" she asked coyly. "Your tail." "Okay, if you really wanna see it." "I do. And... can I see how it happens?" "How what happens?" "How it appears, you know, when you stop using the Veil?" She grinned as she spun around so that I was presented with a magnificent view of her bare bottom, hidden only by the thin strip of leather firmly wedged between her two soft cheeks. This also gave me my first clear view of her wings and how they were attached just below her shoulder blades. It was kind of odd, the way they seemed to just be there, like they weren't really a part of her but something added on later. "Okay." She looked over her shoulder to watch my reaction. "Are you ready?" "M-hmm." I fixed my attention to her rear and waited, I didn't have to wait very long. One second there was nothing there out of the ordinary, the next I was staring at a long, thin black tail protruding from where her tail bone should have ended. It was slipped through one of the rings that held her outfit together, where the waist band and the thong connected. Her tail dipped down over her bum and was almost a foot in length. At its base it was as thick as I imagined her spine was, but it tapered down to nearly a pencil's width at the end. That's where it flared back out into what I can only describe as tiny spade shape. "So?" "So what?" I wasn't really answering, it just popped out automatically. "You don't like it, do you?" "What?" My eyes swept upwards to meet hers as my mind finally accepted what it had just seen. "No... I mean, yes. I like it! It's... its cool." "You're just saying that to make me feel better." She spun around, hiding her tail behind herself. "You hate it. That's okay, I hate it too." "I don't hate your tail. I like it, I really do. It's cute!" "You don't hafta lie." She smirked and turned so I could see her in profile, her tail swaying gently from side to side. "It's ugly. I hate it." "I don't hate it. I was just... I was... Well..." "What?" "I was expecting something... more." "What, more tail?" "No, no... the Veil thing; One second there was nothing, the next it was there." "Yeah, so?" "So... I don't know. I was... I guess I was expecting something more magical than that, you know? Sparkles or a puff of smoke, or a shimmering light." "Sparkles?" Ayumi covered her mouth to try and hide her giggles. "Don't laugh at me." I chuckled myself. "How does it work?" "How does what work... my tail?" She giggled even more as she made her tail swish back and forth. "No, not your tail; the Veil. Where does all this stuff go when you don't use it?" "Nowhere." "Well, it has to go somewhere." "Nope, it's always there, you just can't see it when it's behind the Veil." "Well, if it's always been there, why haven't I felt it before?" "Because the Veil is very good at hiding things, that's why. At least it was." Ayumi looked up at the hazy blue sky. "It's getting thinner, I can feel it. It's ripping apart." "Does it hurt a lot?" She shook her head. "It stings a bit, sometimes it burns, but the real problem is when I take it off and try to put it back on. That's when it hurts the mostest." "Well, why don't you take it off, at least until we get to the city. Then you can put it back on." She scrunched up her face. "What if we get there... an' I can't?" "Well..." I scratched my head while trying to come up with a solution. "I got it!" "What?" "Can you fold your wings down any smaller?" "Yeah, sure." Her wings folded in on themselves just like a bat's wings until they matched the contour of her back. In this position they barely reached past the top of her rear end, nor did they extend beyond her shoulders. "Perfect." I smiled at her as she shot me a confused look. Before she could ask what my plan was I pulled my T-shirt up over my head and tossed it to her. "Try this on." She caught the balled up shirt and held it as far away from her body as she could. "Euwww. It's all sweaty." "Just try it on. We'll take it off and let it dry out before we get to the city if it works." She made a sour face as she delicately peeled the soaked fabric apart and reluctantly pulled it over her head. "Yuck, yuck, yuck." Her arms slipped through the sleeves and my shirt fell around her body, covering her down to her thighs. "Euww, this is soooo gross!" She stuck her tongue out and shook her hands in the air, "Blech!" "Spin around, let me make sure it covers everything." Her displeasure bordered on comical as she slowly tip toed around in a circle trying desperately not to let the shirt touch her any more than it needed to. It would work. Unless someone became too curious about the lumps on her back, she wouldn't draw too much attention. It was going to be dark soon anyway, and since my shirt was black, I doubted that anyone would notice. The shirt was also a much more respectable piece of attire for an eight year old than what she was wearing. The last thing we needed was to draw any unwanted attention. "Okay, you can take it off." "Euwww... yucky, yucky, yucky, pittooeee, bleh..." Slowly she lifted my shirt up and off, then held it in the air at arms length. "Gross, now I smell like a sweaty boy!" "Oh, get over it," I laughed as I retrieved the shirt. "It'll dry. The good news is that it'll work if the Veil doesn't." "Well, I sure hope I won't need it." She waved a hand in front of her nose. "I'm stinky enough now." "I don't stink that bad, do I?" She made a deadly serious face and nodded. A little offended, I took a whiff of my shirt and winced as the odor brought tears to my eyes. "Christ!" I coughed and chuckled. "You're right, I smell horrible." I slung the odorous rock shirt over my shoulder and started up the path again, Ayumi keeping her distance and playfully waving her hand in front of her nose every time I got a little too close. The tall weeds I had taken so much pleasure in dispatching with the dagger started to grow more and more frequently as we continued on. The service road remained clear, but the space between the towers and the forest side soon filled with head high tall grass, severely limiting our view. At one point, Ayumi skipped on ahead then bent over to inspect a particularly vivid blue flower. I watched, amused, as her tail swung this way and that, and then curled up as she inhaled the flower's scent. "So, why don't you like your tail?" She shrugged as she plucked the tiny flower. "It doesn't listen." "What do you mean?" She placed the flower behind her ear. "It just does what it wants to do." "You can't control it?" "If I think about it I can." To demonstrate she made it curl up into a spiral then slowly released it so it hung straight as an arrow. "But most times it does its own thing. It can be 'barrassing." "Seems pretty cool to me. Not as cool as having wings, but still neat." She smiled and rejoined me, this time staying by my side, without the hand gestures and nose pinching. "So, is that everything?" "Whatya mean?" "Well, is this all of you?" I nudged her with my elbow. "No more surprise body parts? An extra eye? Eleventh toe?" "No, no more." She giggled and nudged me back. "How about your powers? I know you can heal, use the Veil, and read minds..." "I can't really read minds," she cut me off, "Only when the other person is feeling strong feelings. Then I can see and hear stuff." "Right. So... you're like an empath." "What's an m-path?" "It's someone who can sense emotions in another person. Tell how they're feeling and stuff." My knowledge of empaths was strictly based on what I'd seen on Star Trek reruns, so I have to admit I pulled this definition out of my ass. She didn't know that of course, so no harm no foul. I was wrong about her anyway. "Well... I can do that, but it's more than that. I see pictures in my head, pictures of things that happened to that person, and I can feel the stuff they felt during those pictures. I can use that stuff to change how people feel." "Honeysuckle." She giggled and looked at me funny. "What?" "Honeysuckle. That's what I smelled when we first met. You did that, didn't you?" "Yep." She looked at me with big, brown puppy eyes. "Don't be mad." "I'm not mad," I assured her with a smile. "Just don't try and pull that crap on me again, okay?" "Okey-dokey." The weeds and tall grass had grown so high it actually offered some much appreciated shade from the blazing sun. I'd only had my shirt off for a few minutes, but already I could feel it burning my shoulders. "So, any other powers?" "Uhhh... I don't know if it's a power, but I can see very good in the dark." "I think that counts." "I smell good, too!" I grinned as I made a big show of sniffing the air around her. "Not really." She playfully punched me in the stomach. "That's not what I meant, and I stink 'cos of your smelly shirt!" "I know, I was just kidding." I ruffled her hair. "Anything else?" "Umm..." She bit her lower lip while thinking. "OH! I almost forgot!" "Forgot what?" "Well, Otho ordered me not to do it back when he was my Master, an' I haven't in so long that I forgot!" "What?" She jumped in front of me and stopped me from moving any closer. "Watch this!" She held up her hands so I could see her finger nails and curled her lips so I could see her teeth. Her brow furrowed as her nails slowly extended, looking more like claws, and her canine teeth grew to be more animal like. "Well?" She lisped as she spoke while trying to keep her teeth on display, "Neat, huh?" "Yikes!" I involuntarily took a step back. "That's scary!" "I know!" She smiled as her teeth and nails retracted to a more normal length. "Otho was scared of 'em too. That's why he ordered me not to do it anymore." "Should I be worried?" She giggled, "No, silly. I wouldn't ever do anything to hurt you." "Well, it's good to know that you can do that, and I won't order you not to, like Otho did." She grinned. "Just... don't do that unless you really need to, okay? It would really freak most people out." "Okey-dokey." She spun on her heels and started skipping down the path with me trailing slightly behind. "Is that everything?" "Yep!" "You sure?" "Uh-huh!" "Really, really sure?" "Abso-tutely!" She stopped suddenly and pointed toward a dense patch of tall grass. "What's that?" I quickened my steps until I caught up, but I couldn't see what she was pointing at. "What's what?" "Over there. That shiny thing." I bent down to her level, and sure enough, something metallic could be seen a few yards away through the thick grass. "I don't know." I took her hand. "Let's check it out." We continued slowly down the road which started a gentle curve away to the right, taking us away from the towers, until we emerged into a wide area where the grass had been flattened. We found ourselves staring at the backs of several parked cars. They were all parked side by side and facing away from us. Some looked like they were brand new, all shined and polished, while the others looked more like the kinds of cars you'd find parked out in front of my high school. The really strange thing was that they were all empty, as if they'd just been abandoned here. As we squeezed between the parked cars a sudden wave of vertigo made my stomach do a back flip. "Whoah!" I gripped Ayumi's hand tighter. "Look at that!" The service road abruptly curved away to our right, heading through a path cut into the woods. Directly in front of us, a few feet in front of all the cars, the way was blocked by a rusty guardrail. The rail was dotted with highly reflective warning signs, all showing the same pictograph image of a triangular arrow pointing in the same direction the road now took. Two feet past the guardrail the ground vanished, dropping away at a steep angle, way too steep to climb down. We timidly took a few steps closer, half expecting the dirt under our feet to crumble away, but it held. We should have known better. After all, the parked cars weren't enough to send the hillside sliding, so it was doubtful that our combined weight would. Ayumi led me closer and closer to the guardrail. "It's... it's... wow." The sky opened widely before us. It's an odd feeling when you can't see the horizon. With every inch closer to the rail, I became more and more convinced that beyond the edge the world was gone, nothing to see except more sky. Thankfully this was not the case. "Look at that! You can see the whole city from here!" Far below, and still quite a distance away, the city of Highland spread out before us. From our vantage point it appeared that we were looking down on the skyscrapers, but I knew this was just an illusion. The tallest buildings were erected much taller than any of the surrounding hills. We could see just about everything, though. The East and West bridges which crossed the Chinikoc and Tarrow Rivers, the large white dome of the Highland Music and Arts Center (better known as the Dome), where I'd watched more than my fair share of rock concerts, the ADS Sports Complex (where Tommy dragged me to a bunch of baseball games when we were growing up), the tall black obelisk shaped ADS World Headquarters, the tan facade of the highly adorned Emory Hughes building, and even the airport (though you really had to squint to see it). Ayumi tugged on my hand. "Why are all these cars here?" "This must be Pussy Point." She giggled, "Pussy Point?" "Yeah. Uh, sorry," I chuckled. "That's what all the guys call it, but around girls they call it Heavenly Heights." "Why?" "Well, this is where they take girls to... well, you know." "What? What do they do?" I could feel myself blushing, but I wasn't sure why. "They have sex here, in the parked cars." "Why do the boys call it a different name?" "If they called it Pussy Point in front of girls they'd never agree to drive up here." "That's silly." Ayumi put her free hand on the guardrail and peered over the edge. "Don'cha think the girls would still know that that's what happens here, even if the name is different?" "Yeah, I guess so." Truth is, it never really dawned on me that the girls who came up here would know exactly what they were in for. Up until now, I just assumed they wouldn't want to be groped in the dark in a parked car, but I guess that was a dumb thing to think, because if it were true, there wouldn't be any cars parked here, ever. "So, how many girls have you brought here?" "Me? None." "Why not?" "Well, because I don't have a car, that's why." "But if you did you would, right?" "Yeah, I guess so." Ayumi pulled herself away from the precipice to look up at me. "Would you take me here?" "What do you mean? We're already here." "I mean... if you had a car, an' all this hadn't happened... would you have tried to get me to come here?" "Well I..." She had me cornered and blushing again. "I... um... I... maybe, if you wanted to." "I would." She grinned and returned her gaze to the view of the city. "I would, even if you called it Pussy Point in front of me." She had me feeling nervous and uncomfortable. I needed to change the subject. "We should, um... we should check these cars to see if any of 'em have stuff we could use." "Okey-dokie." She spun away from the guardrail and released my hand before skipping off towards the nearest vehicle. "What are we lookin' for?" "Um, anything that might help." I joined her beside a blue Impala and peered inside. "Something to drink, or food, maybe even a cell phone. Who knows, it might work." Finding nothing of interest in the Impala, we split up and started checking the other cars. Some of them had their windows down, which made the searching easier, but most were empty, except for the ones with garbage and schoolbooks littered around the backseats. A few cars had handwritten notes placed behind the windshields, all of which said basically the same thing: Not abandoned, please don't tow. The others had rags or shreds of white cloth tied around the car's antenna, or sticking from the tops of their rolled up windows, also signifying that these were not simply left here to rust away, but that their owners would be returning to retrieve them. "These must have been left here since Friday night, when all this mess began." I actually found one with a set of keys still in the ignition and crawled in through the open rear window to try it out. The air inside was stifling hot, the seats nearly welding to my bare skin whenever I brushed an arm against the vinyl. The key turned, but the engine didn't make a sound. It was dead, they all were dead. There were fifteen different cars parked up here, all different makes, models, old and new, and not one of them worked. Once again it got me wondering about the Midnight Riders' bikes, and the cop car, and that weird black car that Mr. Johnson was driving. How could all of those be working fine, but all of these be dead? HONK! The loud noise scared the shit out of me and I looked around wildly for Ayumi. I found her sitting in the driver's seat of a red convertible, her head barely able to peer over the dashboard. She was smiling to herself as her hands turned the wheel this way and that, pretending to drive. She slammed her palm against the horn. HONK! HONK! "Outta my way, jerk off!" she yelled at the invisible traffic. Driving around with Otho must have been a real educational experience. "Cut me off will ya? I'll fuckin' tear your balls off an' feed 'em to ya!" A panic filled me as I watched her right hand dip down to her side and jerk the parking break. For a moment nothing happened and she just went on merrily playing, but then the car started to roll. "Oh, Jesus!" I tried the door of the car I was in, but it wouldn't open. I had to climb back out the way I'd come in, over the seats and back out the rear window. I wormed my way out and fell to the dusty ground with a thud. I could hear the tires of her car crunching the dirt as it continued to roll. I was on my feet in a heartbeat and took off running, hoping beyond hope that I would be able to stop the car before it rolled down the hillside. "Aieee!" Her squeal filled me with horror as I made it around to the guardrail, prepared to throw myself in front of her car if meant saving her life. I needn't have worried... the car was rolling in the opposite direction. It rolled twenty feet backwards and into the high grass where it stopped. Ayumi looked scared, but when the car came to a halt she broke out into nervous giggles. She saw the look on my face and leaned out the window. "That was fun!" I shook my head and breathlessly trudged over to where she was stuck. "You nearly scared the shit out of me." "Can I do that again?" "No fuckin' way," I laughed, but then an idea popped into my head. I looked over to where the service road veered off and continued through the woods, downhill. "Hmm... that just might work." "What?" Ayumi began to climb out of the open window, but I held a hand up to stop her. "You want to go for a little drive?" She looked confused. "But they don't work." "They will where we're heading." I moved around behind the convertible. "Can you steer while I push?" She smiled, "Yep!" "Just be ready to move over once we get moving, I'm going to be the one doing the driving." She pouted.
