Without warning, another gunshot broke the silence. It had been going on for the past half an hour, though the volume had varied. Sometimes there was only one or two every couple of minutes, and others it sounded like a warzone.
They sounded close to us, too, but I wasn’t paying them much attention.
On the floor, laying next to me, was half of my riot gear, including my helmet, my chest pads and my shield. As soon as we had stopped I had taken it off, as I couldn't stand it anymore. I felt better without them, though the stench of burnt plastic filled the air remained, making me feel sick.
A few meters away, leaning against an old, rusty machine of some sort, was Sarge. She was wearing all her gear except for her helmet, which she had tied behind her back, along with her shotgun.
She was smoking a cigarette as she looked around the factory, though she wasn't paying me any attention.
Sarge was tall, even taller than me, and with her riot gear she looked big and intimidating. She was also extremely beautiful, though she never wore makeup and she was a dry and humorless person. Her face was in darkness, but I knew she was still angry.
Neither of us had spoken since we arrived, but that was fine by me. I preferred the silence.
Around us the factory stood still. Old and broken machines littered the space, along with a few makeshifts signs and some crude walls.
The factory itself was located right next to a shantytown, one of many in the city, and three days ago a group of people had occupied the factory. They claimed that they needed a place to live, and that if the government didn't help them they would build their houses inside of it.
The government panicked, as the shantytown was already a big problem for the city and they didn't want it to expand.
Then someone had the brilliant idea to send us in. We arrived in force, first to form a circle around the factory and to stop more people to come in, and then to clear the place. It should have been easy, but the people inside it, trapped as they were, had fought back fiercely.
The moment we started advancing they threw rocks, pieces of rusty metal, and anything they could find towards us. They injured a few, but when we didn't stop, someone inside decided to raise try something a little more dangerous.
The first molotov cocktail flew on the night of the second day, as we tried to enter the third and final building in the factory. It landed in the middle of a line and the flames engulfed three officers. As their gear caught fire, they panicked, running away as the flames burned them. Behind them, their teammates ran desperately, trying to put the fire out, but it wasn't easy.
Plastic is hard to put out, and they had nothing but their hands. It took time, which they didn't really have.
By the time it was over, one of them had died and the two others were flown to the hospital in a helicopter. The rest of the us were told to retreat as someone finally realized that pushing again would only escalate thing even further.
Then the next day, early in evening we were sent forward once more, though this time there were two times as many of us than before, and that is when all hell broke loose. After a few hours we managed to enter the factory and everyone ran away in panic. A few more molotov's were thrown, through most fell harmlessly short.
It was almost over, or so we thought, but someone on their side got lucky and managed to throw one right at us.
I barely managed to dodge it, but a second later a big fireball exploded next to me as I fell to the floor. My shield and my left hand caught fire, but someone managed to put it out a few seconds later.
When I managed to calm down I finally saw Green, one of my teammates, laying on the floor as smoke raised from his body. They had managed to out the fire and a pair of medics were already lifting him into a stretcher. His gear had melted away and his skin, what was left of it, was charred and broken.
He had his helmet still on, though. One of the medics told me it was because the melted plastic had fused with his skin, and that they didn’t dare pull it off.
After we managed to regroup, the rest of the line was sent forwards, into the shanty town in search of the culprits though I had no idea how we would find anyone, as the place was deserted after the battle.
Fortunately for me we were ordered to stand guard in one of the smaller buildings, and we had been there for the past half hour.
My arm was a throbbing mass of agony by then, but I didn't dare say anything, especially not to Sarge.
A moment later I heard someone laughing and the sound of footsteps getting closer. I finally looked up as Sarge threw her cigarette onto the dirt covered floor just in time to see them arrive.
Two men appeared from the darkness, dressed in heavy riot gear. They were Wood and Mitchell, who along with Sarge were considered the scariest officers in the force. I never knew why they put me with them that day, but I kept quiet and did what I was told.
Between the two they had captured a black girl, though I couldn't see much of her at first. They had cuffed her hands behind her back and after threading one of their batons under her armpits, they were carrying her in the air as her feet dragged behind her.
From time to time I could see her trying to stand up, maybe hoping to take the weight off from her shoulders, but every time she managed to stand they threw her off once more.
It was obvious that they were playing with her.
She was wearing a pair of jeans, canvas shoes, and a dark green tunic that flared around her like a skirt. Her black, curly hair stuck up around her head, and I could see that she had been peppered at some point, as the bright orange stain that it leaves was still visible on her face.
Then they stopped in front of Sarge and then they simply dropped the girl to the floor. Cuffed as she was, she fell heavily onto the floor and with no way to stop herself. I winced as I heard her skull crashing onto the hard concrete floor, but they just laughed at her.
A moment later I heard her moaning in pain as she curled up into a ball, drawing her knees towards her chest.
“Hey Sarge!” Wood said enthusiastically. “Look what we found!”
Next to him, Mitchell smiled as he stretched his back.
Sarge looked at him in silence for a few seconds before she too smiled, though there was no humor in hers. Then she turned around and she looked at me for the first time since we arrived.
“You okay there, rookie?” she asked me.
I looked at her for a few seconds, unable to answer. The pain in my arm had been getting worse and worse for the past half an hour, and by then I was in agony.
My hand and part of my arm were horribly burnt. The skin along my forearm had split along it like a roasted ham and I could hardly move my fingers.
But even then I knew that the worst was yet to come. I had to take care of it soon, or it would surely get infected. I was already trembling just from thinking about it, but I also knew that Sarge wouldn't listen to me.
But despite all of that I nodded slowly before I looked away, towards my gear.
“Yes, Sarge.” I said to her. “Have you heard anything from Green?”
“I don't know much. Last time I saw him they were taking him into the ambulance. He was burned all over, but the doctor said it wasn't so bad…” she said, running her hand through her long blond hair.
“You were lucky, rookie. If you had been a foot closer you would be on your way to the hospital too…” she said a second later, smiling darkly at me.
I nodded slowly, knowing she was right. But despite her words, I didn't feel lucky.
When the bomb hit the ground I had felt the fire exploding around me, the flames licking my gear in search for a place to enter. Just the memory of it made me shudder, and I started sweating heavily.
My shield had caught most of the fuel splatter, sparing everything but my arm, which had started to burn when the shield melted in my hands.
“Please…” the girl said a moment later, her voice broken and full of pain.
It was only then that I realized that she was sobbing quietly. I turned to look at her just as she looked at me.
Her dust covered face was dark as chocolate, and despite the tears and the grime she looked beautiful. She was wearing brackets on her teeth, and when she fell they must have cut her mouth open as her mouth was red with blood.
She looked at each of us for a second before she started whimpering weakly, and her breathing became short and shallow.
“Please… I haven't done anything…” she pleaded once before she fell silent.
Meanwhile, Sarge simply ignored her as she kept looking at me. Then she turned around and she approached the girl.
“Mitchell, where did you find her?” she asked him as she towered above the girl.
“She tried to run from us, Sarge. We saw her walking down the street and when we told her to stop she started running. Very suspicious, don't you think?” he said as he laughed. “She tried to hide under a bush, but we managed to find her. Wood was the one, actually. I just helped carry her.”
“Yeah…” the Sarge said, nodding tiredly. “I bet you were going home after an evening throwing rocks and molotov cocktails at us, ain't that right?”
The girl looked at her in horror as she finally realized what was happening, and her eyes grew wide with panic.
“Nooooo! That’s not true!” she screamed a second later, her voice high and panicky. “I was just going back home, I have no idea what you are talking about! Please, you have to believe me!”
Sarge looked at her for a few seconds before she shook her head, looking somehow disappointed.
“Did you find anything on her?” she asked Mitchell a moment later.
He nodded before giving her a cell phone, through the screen was broken and it was obvious that it didn't work anymore.
“We also found these, laying on the street when we were dragging her ass back here.” he said as he dropped a small backpack to the floor. “I am pretty sure its hers.”
The backpack was made out of black fabric, and it looked cheaply made. As it fell I heard glass tinkling on the inside. After nodding grimly, Sarge opened it up and she pulled out a green glass bottle. It was full of some dark liquid, and on the top there was a rag, stuffed deep into the neck.
“That is not mine… please… you have to believe me…” the girl pleaded a second later as she looked at the molotov in Sarge’s hands.
“Shut up...” was Sarge’s only answer as she rose from the floor.
Before I could realize what she was doing, she turned around and she kicked the girl in the stomach. Sarge was big, and even without her gear, she must have weighed at least 100 pounds more than the girl.
Almost in slow motion, I saw her small body raising into the air, almost a foot high, as it folded around Sarge’s foot. She seemed to hover in the air for a moment, before she fell once more, and then the girl gasped in agony.
“Ohhhhh, brutal...” I heard Wood saying as he laughed out loud.
Then Sarge turned around and she looked at me. I don't know if she saw it on my face, but I was just about to say something to her, but under her gaze I felt silent. A moment later she raised her eyebrows, daring me silently to say anything, but I didn't.
Hanging my head in shame, I looked away a moment later.
“Did you two report her in over the radio?” Sarge asked them a moment later, once more ignoring me.
“No, Sarge. You know I hate paperwork.” Mitchell said, shaking his head. “Besides, what is the point. We take her in and some lawyer will have her out in a few hours.”
“Yeah, that is true…” she said a second later.
Then she threw the molotov at Mitchell, who caught it easily with one hand. A moment later he took it towards his face and I heard him sniffing the contents. With a smile, he passed it towards Wood, who did the same before he placed it on the floor.
Meanwhile, Sarge had kneeled next to the girl, who was still trying to catch her breath as she sobbed pathetically.
Looking once more at me, she grabbed the girl’s hair, lifting her head from the floor as she winced from the new source of pain.
“I am pretty sure I saw you an hour ago, throwing rock at us.” Sarge told the girl as she held her head in the air.
Despite the pain, the girl was trying to get up, hoping to escape the pain, but with her hands cuffed behind her back it wasn't easy, and Sarge wasn’t helping either.
Whenever the girl managed to get one leg under her, Sarge would pull it away.
“Please… you are hurting me…” the girl moaned a moment later, her voice barely a whisper. “I was at a friend's house, I swear… I have no idea what you are talking about… please… I swear…”
“Stop lying.” Sarge said a moment later, her face suddenly filling with anger.
Then she twisted the girl’s head to one side, toward Mitchell and Wood, who were laughing softly.
“You two saw here in the front, didn’t you?” she asked them.
It was Wood who answered her. For just a moment his face turned serious and they looked at the girl before nodding eagerly.
“Yes, Sarge, it was her alright. You know that I never forget a face.” he said as the girls face filled with renewed panic.
“Noooo… please, you have to believe me!” she pleaded desperately. “It wasn't me! Please!”
Ignoring the girl’s pleas, Sarge twisted her head around once more, showing her to me.
“What about you, rookie. You were right in front of her. Surely you remember her, don't you?” she asked me, her voice low and cold.
Unable to answer I shook my head. I hadn't seen who had thrown it, but I never saw a girl in the front. There had been men, some old, some younger, some white though most had been black. But there was no way it had been her.
“Come on rookie, think again, you were there.” she said to me, her voice even colder than before.
Unable to meet her gaze any longer I looked away as I licked my lips nervously.
“I am sorry Sarge… I couldn't see well with all the people around…” I said, trying not to stammer. “I just saw the bottle flying towards me and I jumped out of the way…”
This time Sarge kept silent as I felt my face burning in shame. Behind her I could see Wood and Mitchell, their faces filled with anger.
Swallowing nervously, I looked at the girl’s face once more. She was looking at me as if I was her last hope, but I too was terrified of them.
“I guess… maybe… I guess it could have been her, Sarge…” I said weakly as I felt a shiver running down my spine.
Then the girl started crying as she started trembling even harder than before.
“Did you see her?” Sarge asked me once more, lifting the girls head a little higher.
Closing my hands into tight fists I finally looked away, unable to look at the girl any longer. I was tired and in pain. I just wanted everything to be over, to go home so that I could finally sleep.
In my tortured mind I thought that they would simply take her in to the station, maybe beat her up a little on the way there. Surely even they wouldn't be so stupid as to do anything to serious, I thought. But even as I did I started to doubt.
But despite those doubts I nodded weakly, feeling my heart freezing inside of me.
“Nooo… no… nooooo, please!” the girl started moaning, her voice filled with panic. “Please, you have to believe me… oh, god… please… you have to…”
A moment later Sarge grunted in satisfaction, releasing the girl once more before she got up.
“I will be right back, I need to make a call.” she said. “Wait here, and don’t touch her. Especially you, Wood!”
Then she turned around and she walked out of the building, closing the door behind her. The girl, now laying back on the floor, sobbed quietly as I watched her.
The moment Sarge was gone, Wood looked at me, smirking as I cowered under his gaze. He knew I wouldn't say anything, and neither would Mitchell, so he moved closer to the girl as I took a step back.
“Ohhhh, man, all this running around makes me want to take a leak.” he said as he stopped in front of the girl.
After looking at me once more, he turned his attention to the girl. She had managed to roll over until she was facing up. Her eyes found Wood and she started whimpering in fear as he grinned at her.
Then he pulled his pants open and he took his cock out.
“What…” the girl said before she was interrupted.
Wood had aimed his cock at her chest and a second later he started peeing. Urine splattered onto her face and into her open mouth, making her cough as she recoiled in disgust.
A moment later she tried to get away from him, but he stepped on her stomach, pinning her against the ground as he moved his aim towards her face.
“Nooooooo!” she managed to scream before Wood stared filling her mouth with his urine.
“Ohhh, yeah… that's much better!” he said, ignoring the girls cries as he drenched her face and her hair with piss.
Unable to escape, the girl closed her mouth and her eyes and she stood frozen in place as he used her as a toilet.
It seemed to last forever, but soon he finished, and after shaking the last drops from his cock, he turned around, looking at me as he pulled his pants closed.
Unable to hold his gaze, I looked away as he laughed softly.
“She said I couldn't touch her, she didn't say anything about taking a leak on her face, did she?” he asked me as he turned around, leaving the girl alone.
Behind him the girl had rolled over once more as she coughed weakly. She was still crying, and drenched in urine she looked even more pathetic than before. I was filled with guilt as I realized that is was my fault.
If only I had told Sarge the truth, she would have been free. Maybe it wasn't too late, I thought for a moment as I heard Sarge returning.
But one look at her face was enough to silence me once more.
Sarge walked angrily towards us, stopping in front of the girl who looked at her in fear. She didn't mention the fact that the girl was dripping wet in piss, and besides one quick look at her, she ignored her completely.
“Green is dead.” she said a second later as she looked around the factory.
“What?” I managed to ask as I felt a knot forming inside of me.
“He died on the way to the hospital. Never made it… apparently it was much worst that what they thought.” she said, sounding sympathetic, if only for a moment. “I am sorry…”
“Motherfuckers…” I heard Mitchell say as he spat towards the girl, who started whimpering in fear.
Wood, standing next to him, simply stared at the girl, his face crossed by a nasty smirk.
I started trembling once more, and as I closed my eyes I saw the bottle flying towards me one more. It could have been me, I thought. If I hadn't seen it coming, if I had moved just a little slower, it would have hit me on the face and I would be dead.
Unable to control myself, I started hyperventilating as everything around me started to spin. Suddenly I felt sick and feverish. I needed fresh air, and the stench of burnt plastic that covered me only made things worse.
No one was paying me any attention though, and to one side I heard Sarge saying something.
When I looked toward her, she was picking up the backpack from the floor as Wood and Michel picked up the girl.
I suddenly filled with new fear, as the girl started screaming, pleading at them to stop, though it made no difference.
Without another word, they took the girl towards the other side of the factory, following Sarge as she looked around.
Mitchell, his face twisted in disgust at having to pick up the girl after Wood had peed on her, said something to him while Wood nodded, though I couldn't hear what he said.
Not wanting to be left behind, I managed to straighten up and I followed them along. Then I saw Sarge stopping before she grabbed a chain that was hanging from the ceiling.
High above her there was a chain hoist. It looked old and covered in rust, but after giving it a try it appeared to work and she nodded in satisfaction. The two men dropped the girl on the ground, and then Sarge passed the end of the chain under her arms and around her chest before she tied the end.
“I am tired of this. Of you fuckers throwing rock and molotov's at us, of not knowing when I am going to light up like a fucking barbecue…” she said as she stood next to the whimpering girl.
She was looking at Sarge from the floor, cowering in fear as she tried to get away from her.
“The problem… I think, is that we have to play by the fucking rules all the time, and you don’t.” she said as Wood nodded behind her. “I think I am tired of following the rules.”
She stopped for a moment, and after taking a deep breath she looked at me for a second.
“I think it's time we let them know, don't you think?” she asked us, though I was too scared to respond.
Without warning she started pulling her up as the girl screamed in agony, as all her weight suddenly rested on her shoulder.
“Aaaaarghhhhh! Please… Nooooo! It hurts….” she pleaded weakly as her feet left the floor.
Now hanging in the air, she started spinning slowly, making me feel dizzy again.
“Please… I am scared… just let me go, I won’t… I won’t say anything… I swear… pleaaaaseee...” she pleaded weakly as she cried.
But Sarge simply ignored her as she locked the chain hoist.
The girl, desperate to escape from the pain, stretched her feet towards the ground, but it out of her reach.
Then Sarge approached her once more, stopping just in front of her before her hand shot towards the girl’s neck, lifting her even higher into the air.
The girl panicked once more, her eyes growing wide as Sarge squeezed her neck tightly. Desperate to breath, I saw her opening her mouth as she managed one short and pitiful breath.
“You said you didn’t call her in, did you?” Sarge asked Wood as he looked with a bemused look in his face.
“No, Sarge, we didn't.” Wood said, smiling as he watched the girl struggling. “I just fucking hate paperwork.”
“Wait till you make Sergeant, then talk to me about paperwork, Wood.” Sarge said to him with a dry smile on her face.
A moment later she released the girl, who immediately started coughing as she tried to catch her breath.
“Can you imagine what it must be to burn alive? To feel you flesh cooking as the flames engulf your body?” she asked the girl, who gasped in shock.
Her face froze instantly, not knowing what to say as she looked into Sarge’s green eyes. A moment later she weakly shook her head as she trembled under her gaze.
“I didn’t…” she managed to say before Sarge turned around, leaving her alone.
Then Wood took Sarge’s place and he moved in front of her. He smiled coldly and then without a word he started ripping her clothes off. First her tunic and then the sleeveless white shirt she was wearing under it. Then he opened up her pants and he pulled them off violently, dragging her shoes along with them.
The girl started screaming for help, but I knew we were alone. I started to panic too, not knowing what they were planning but fearing the worst. I had hear rumors about Wood, and for a moment I thought he was going to rape her in front of me.
After throwing her clothes away, he grabbed her bra with one big hand and he pulled from it until the fabric ripped, leaving a red mark along her back and her chest.
The girl screamed in pain as her body swung under the chains, and a moment later he did the same with her panties, leaving her completely naked.
“Ohhhh, man… look at her!” he said laughing.
As the girl sobbed hysterically, he grabbed one of her feet, pulling her leg up as he ducked under it.
“Shit, take a look at this, Mitch. Her cunt looks just like a piece of roast beef. All brown and crispy on the outside, pink and juicy on the inside!”
Before I could even say anything I saw him running his hand along her pussy before he pushed a couple of fingers inside of her.
Unable to escape, the girl grunted in pain as he stretched her pussy, thought a moment later he released her.
“Ohhh, you are one kinky girl. You are all wet!” he said.
Still laughing, he licked his fingers as he moaned in fake pleasure. The girl looked away, obviously humiliated by his abuse, thought she kept quiet, too scared to say anything.
Unable to take my eyes away from the scene, I watched in horror as her body erupted in goose bumps and her nipples became hard. Her breast were small, as were her hips, and now that she was naked I realized something that I hadn't before.
“She is just a child…” I whispered, though no one was paying me any attention.
She couldn't have been more than 13 or 14 years old, if not less.
“Please… just let me go…” she managed to say once more as I watched, but she sounded defeated.
“Sarge, can you give me a few minutes to play with her?” Wood asked as if he was talking about a toy.
And in my mind there was no doubt about what games he wanted to play. I shuddered as I imagined him raping her in front of me while Mitchell and Sarge held her.
But a moment later Sarge shook her head, though she was smiling at him.
“Ohhh well, if you say so.” Wood said as he grabbed one of the girl’s small breasts.
Without warning he pinched her nipple and then he started pulling from it, stretching her breast as he pulled her body forward.
A dry gurgle of pain escaped the girls throat as she clenched her jaws close. She tried desperately to endure the pain, but it soon proved to be too much and she started screaming in agony as Wood smiled.
While Wood played with the girl, Sarge returned to the backpack. Her movements were slow and deliberate as she picked up a bottle, and after pulling of the rag she walked towards Wood.
She gave him the bottle and then she took a step back, watching me.
“Do you want a drink?” Wood asked the girl as he offered her the bottle.
Too terrified to even speak, she moved her head away from him as he moved the bottle from side to side, splashing a few drops of fuel around.
“Well, if you are sure…” he said before he capped the bottle with his thumb.
After looking at Sarge for a second, he shook the bottle until the fuel started to foam at the top and then he started shaking the bottle towards her.
The fuel inside shot out towards the girl, landing on her belly and her hips. The girl recoiled from it as if it were acid, even more terrified from before, but she had no way to escape.
Oblivious to her screams , Wood kept spraying her with the fuel until the liquid was dripping down her legs and onto the floor below, forming a small puddle.
“Nooooo! Please! What are you doing!” she said, her voice shrill and full of panic. “Help!” Please! Somebody help me!”
But there was no one listening to her. I watched in silence, my body frozen in place as Wood emptied the bottle on her before he threw it away. I heard the glass exploding behind me, but I was hardly paying attention to it.
Mad with terror, the girl trembled under the chain, the metallic rattle filling the air around us.
“What's the matter, is it cold?” Wood asked her sarcastically before he took a step back.
“Noooo! You are crazy… please… I don't.. I don't wanna…” the girl started saying as she hung her head down.
Looking into my eyes, Sarge moved toward the girl one more, stopping a few feet away from her as I watched silently.
“Please… I don’t wanna… I will do… anything you want… please… I don’t wanna...” the girl started repeating, over and over as her mind broke down.
But Sarge wasn't paying her any attention. Her eyes were locked onto mine, and this time I didn't dare look away.
Without taking her eyes from mine, Sarge pulled a cigarette from one of her pockets and with practiced ease she lit it using a cheap plastic lighter. After taking a long drag, she started smiling, though there was no humor in it.
She was waiting for me, giving me a chance to say something. Maybe if I had, I could have stopped her, but I was too terrified of her. After a full minute, I finally manage to look away, my face burning in humiliation.
Sarge looked satisfied for a moment, but then her face became dark before she turned around.
Even while she hung from the chain, her feet a full feet in the air, Sarge towered over the girl. She looked at her for a while and then without saying a word, she looked at Wood first and then at Mitchell. Both nodded as I watched in horror.
I was frozen in place, unable to stop what I knew was going to happen.
Finally Sarge nodded to herself, and after taking another drag from the cigarette she picked it from her mouth and she threw it at the girl’s hips.
The moment the tip touched her, I heard a loud whoomp that shook my insides, and she was engulfed in flames. The fire burned furiously, covering her whole body all the way from her feet to her breasts in a split second, leaving only her head free.
The girl looked around for a moment, her eyes unfocused, as if she still hadn't realized what was happening, but it only lasted an instant before she started screaming in agony.
Sarge herself had to take a step back as the heat became too much, and I saw her covering her face with one hand as she looked towards the fire.
“Fuck! What the hell do they put on those things!” I heard Mitchell saying over the girl’s screams.
As the fire grew even hotter, the girl started shaking, trying desperately to escape the chains, but they held firmly.
And from a few yards away, I watched her burn, just as Green had.
Her screams of agony were horrible, and I felt my body growing hot as I watched the flames. My arm started throbbing once more, and I remembered that moment when I too had been burning.
“Smells just like a barbecue!” Wood screamed to one side, laughing as he watched. “Fuck yeah!”
The fire was slowly climbing her body, but it was too slow and I knew it. It would take minutes for it to kill her, and meanwhile she would suffer horribly.
I could see her black skin burning away before it cracked open like a roasted piece of meat. Trembling uncontrollably, I swallowed nervously as my stomach twisted in repulsion.
I wanted it to be over, once and for all. There was no saving her, not now. It was too late, and by then death would have been a mercy. But only then I understood why Wood had sprayed her only on her stomach or below.
It would have been over too quickly if the flames had covered her head. This way she would last for much longer.
Her screams got even louder as her body shuddered in agony, and then her panic filled eyes found mine. She looked at me desperately praying for mercy, but I couldn’t hold her gaze any longer and I finally closed my eyes.
Then, just as I started retching, I heard a loud shot and her screams stopped in an instant. I opened my eyes just as he body jerked one final time and then she stopped moving.
The place felt silent except for the crackling of the fire as her body kept burning away, though she now hung listlessly form the chain.
“What the fuck did you do that for?” Mitchell asked as he looked at me, his eyes full of anger.
It was only then that I managed to look down at my hand.
I was gripping my pistol so hard that my fingers had turned white and I could hear the resin frame cracking under the strain.
A small wisp of smoke escaped the barrel just as I releases the pistol, and I saw it fall to the floor with a loud crack. It had been me. I had killed her, even though I hadn't realized what I was doing.
As I started sobbing I saw Sarge looking at me with open disgust, but she didn't say anything.
It was Wood, standing next to Mitchell, who I feared most. He was smiling coldly, his eyes locked into mine. For a brief moment I wanted to shoot him too. I told myself that I could grab my gun and kill him before he realized it. Sarge too, if I was fast enough, but instead I looked away as I trembled under his gaze.
“Mitchell, Wood, grab your gear and let's get the fuck out of here.” Sarge said a moment later, unclipping her helmet from her back.
With practiced ease, she slipped it on, lowering her face shield as she walked away. The two men followed her a moment later, giving me one last glance before leaving me alone with her.
The flames were just starting to die down by then, but the sight of her charred body was too much for me.
I collapsed to the floor, clutching my burned arm as I watched her until the fire died away and everything became silent once more.
“What have I done…” I wailed miserably as I started crying.
