ACT IV: Sisters Helping Sisters
Peta grunts as she lurches forward, knees bent as her chin meets her stomach and back again. The blare of music through her iPod dock drowns out the insecure thoughts in the back of her mind. Though they are there, circling around and around in her head like sharks until they sink their teeth in and pull her wavering confidence down with her.
“One, two, three...” Julia counts the reps for her. “Four, five, six...”
Julia grasps her sister’s feet, acting as support as she puts Peta through her paces. It wasn’t Peta’s idea to get in shape initially. The prom would take place in a matter of weeks, and Mamá was particularly insistent on her going. She needed to turn that belly fat into muscle if she was ever going to snag a date. Not that she particularly cared either way.
But Mamá could be stubborn that way. And once she makes up her mind...watch out!
Besides, there was another reason for Peta to get fit. Ever since her initial encounter with Audrey, those luscious lips and chestnut curls remained burned in her mind. The very thought of the two being near each other made her lightheaded. She yearned to be near Audrey more often, to feel that endorphin-fused rush, and it seemed her wish was about to come true. She only learned of the gig at Beautiful Creatures last night when she and Audrey spoke on the phone.
Of course Peta said yes. It was only a part-time job filing documents, yet it felt like Paradise. But if Peta is going to be taken seriously by Audrey let alone the clients, the nerdy teen image is going to have to go, and burning that belly fat goes a long way towards doing that.
Julia watches as her sister’s boyish chest heaves and falls. They might have had their issues in the past, but damn it if Peta isn’t going to walk on that dance floor and suck the air out of the room.
“How many more of these crunches do I have to take?”
“As many as you can stand,” Julia holds firm.
“My stomach hurts,” Peta whines.
“It’s called feeling the burn,” Her sister shoots back. “Get used to it.”
“Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen...” Julia resumes her counting. “Eighteen, nineteen, twenty.”
Peta exhales as her hands fall to her sides.
“This feels like torture,”
“Serves you right for playing video games all day,” Julia taunts her. “It’s a wonder you can move around at all.”
“They’re not video games, they’re visual novels,” Peta shoots back. “Besides, I have a long ways to go before I get that chunky.”
Julia rolls her eyes at the thought.
Peta glances at the ceiling.
“I can’t do this,” She glances at her sister.
“Are you throwing in the towel already?”
“Who are we kidding? Besides, you’ve always been the prettier one.”
The comment wounds Julia.
“Is that how you really feel?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Peta shoots back. “Ever since I can remember you’ve always had someone draped on your arm. I’m lucky if I can get a boy to look at me.”
“Things are different now. This is your chance to prove to the world that you’re worth the attention...”
“I’m not sure I want to go. It doesn’t feel right, like I’m betraying myself somehow.”
“Don’t be so dramatic.”
Peta takes a deep breath.
“I have a confession to make.”
Julia waits with baited breath as her sister stares through the window of their duplex. A jogger sprints along the sidewalk, the spring wind rustling in her hair. If only Peta could enjoy that kind of freedom. But looks are deceiving...
“I am not interested in boys. Not anymore,” Peta shakes her head. “Ever since I met Audrey...”
Julia doesn’t have to be reminded. The changes have been noticeable ever since Peta’s visit to the dentist in mid-March. The hairstyles, the clothing, and even the tone of her voice are different now. Julia knew for sure the transformation was real when she stepped into her sister’s room, only to discover the posters of Justin Bieber replaced with those of Demi Lovato.
It was only a matter of time before Peta traveled along the same path as her sister. That the object of Peta’s obsession is Beautiful Creatures’ resident receptionist is all the more shocking.
“I guess this means you won’t be going to the prom this year,”
“Mom’s going to be crushed,” Peta casts her eyes downward. “What should I tell her?”
“The truth,” Her sister shoots back. “It’s not going to be easy, but better for her to get it from you than one of her. You know what I mean?”
“I guess you’re right,” Peta sighs. “But Mom’s going to freak when she finds out.”
The girls share a laugh at the thought.
“There’s something I need to tell you as well,” Julia confesses. “You know that roommate I’ve been telling you about, the blonde one?”
“mmm-mmm.”
“She and I are...we’re not on good terms anymore. We’ve never known each other that well really, but ever since our...confrontation we’ve been absolutely frigid.”
“What happened? Did you have a fight or something?”
“I can’t say for sure when it started, but one day we just got into an argument and I...I got physical with her. I’m talking welts and bruises. We haven’t seen much of each other since, obviously. But I’d love to see her one more time, just so I could apologize.”
“And you consider this person a friend?”
“Not a friend exactly, but life’s too short to leave things on a sour note.”
Peta bites her lip as she’s lost in thought.
“Why don’t you write her a letter, tell her how you feel.”
“I don’t know about that,” Julia hesitates in mid-speech. “She’ll probably think it’s just a ploy to get her to speak to me again.”
“Do something nice for her anyway. The worst thing she can do is say no.”
Julia’s eyes wander as she glances at her sibling. In the space of a few months her sister has gone from being a geeky ugly duckling to one of the prettiest girls in high school—not as pretty as Julia was at her age, but good enough. Big-nosed, with a face framed by large black glasses, Peta is the kind of person who could easily get lost in the crowd.
But what she lacks in looks, she makes up for with a brain sexier than Hell—which Julia had to admit was pretty hot.
She’d even make a play for her, if circumstances were different. But there was still that pesky matter of incest. Even so, she couldn’t avoid the allure of temptation, pulling her ever so closely towards the line.
“You’re a fucking genius, you know that?” Julia purrs. “I wish I had half the brains you do.”
She massages her sister’s ankle, cautiously at first, sizing up her sister’s reaction. The movement blossoms into a stroking of thighs, a gentle caress to put her sister at ease. Julia’s fiery eyes burn with desire as she gazes at her sister, clearly aghast.
“Wh-what are you doing?”
“I am different too you know,” Julia leans over her sister. “Guess that makes the two of us. But at least we have each other.”
“What does that have to do with anything—MMPF!”
Peta’s eyes widen at the revelation. She barely has time to process it as her sister pulls her into a kiss. Peta is beside herself as their lips meet. Yet soon enough she is returning the favor. To her surprise, she feels comfortable in her sister’s embrace. Though she can’t figure out why.
Their nipples harden as their bodies press against each other. It all seems too much too fast, but Peta isn’t sure she wants to push her sister away.
“Are we really doing this?” She asks.
“Oh yes,” Julia nibbles her ear.
Kisses rain on Peta’s neck as her sister works her way downward. A nibble here, a nibble there, traveling along the contours of the teen’s body. Her stomach flutters as her sister laps her belly button, eliciting an impromptu giggle.
Julia’s lips come to rest near Peta’s crotch, eyes begging to be let in.
A door slam brings the session to a halt.
“Hijas!” Their mother’s lilting voice carries throughout the house. “I’m home!”
“Thanks for the advice,” Julia rolls off her sister. “Call me if you need anything, ok?”
Peta doesn’t respond.
Her legs feel heavy as Dina slowly climbs the steps to her dorm, forcing herself to place one foot ahead of the other. Her backpack shifts as it presses against her back, the accumulation of textbooks and notes making themselves felt. She lets out an exhausted sigh.
She grips her key as her room is in sight, gripping the strap of her knapsack with her free hand. With any luck she can work in a shower and a nap before dinner before she faces another gauntlet of papers and studying.
A creaking sound echoes throughout the hall as the door gives way, yielding an unlikely surprise. Dina stares at the bulging manila envelope, lying prominently for her to discover. Someone wanted her to see this, and she has a good idea who.
She glances at the flowing cursive script, the D and I’s floating across the front end of the envelope. The penmenship leaves no doubt as to its author. Which doesn’t make the strawberry blonde feel any less uneasy.
Julia was definitely here.
Dina’s mind whirls as she wonders about the author’s intent. Was this some kind a message, a taunt? Some kind of sick joke?
She hefts the envelope. A lone tape recorder peeks out, a glint of black shimmering in the light. Dina glances at the note stuck to its side.
“Play me,” It reads.
Dina hesitates. What if the memories of that encounter come flowing back towards her? She isn’t sure if she could bear the bandage being peeled off again.
She reluctantly presses play, closing the door gently behind her.
“Dear Dina,” Julia’s voice drifts out of the speaker. “If you’re listening to this, you’re probably wondering why I’m here right now. It’s kind of a long story, but you’re probably too angry to care anyway. This isn’t an apology, nor is it an excuse for my behavior. I’m not expecting you to forgive me, but before you throw this tape away you need to hear me out. What I’m about to say isn’t going to make sense at first, but bear with me...”
“About a month or so ago I developed a pain in my upper jaw... It wasn’t anything serious at first, but the aching got so bad I couldn’t eat or drink anything. As it turned out, the culprit was an impacted wisdom tooth. I figured an infection would set in if I didn’t do anything, so I did made some calls looking for a dentist who would do a quick operation on the cheap.”
“After some research, I settled on...I settled on this clinic on the other side of town. I’d never heard of it before in my life, but the online reviews were mostly positive, and from what I could tell the staff seemed nice and capable. My car was broken down which meant my sister had to take me. She was completely against the idea, but after some prodding she finally went along. The procedure was a success, but afterwards I started noticing some changes in my body.”
A guttural groan escape’s Julia’s throat. She coughs as she struggles to resume speaking. She stumbles on her words, trying desperately to string them along. A sentence hangs in mid-space as Julia flails around in search of the right words
“Anyway,” She continues, “When I woke up the next morning my hearing and sight were out of this world. I had this boundless energy, like I could go on all night. My skin glowed. It was like I was a superhero or something. That’s when I started to feel things—experience things—that I never knew I desired...”
“I was just in the midst of discovering those feelings when I—” Julia moans. “When I hurt you... I didn’t mean to, of course but I...I mean, it wasn’t intentional. You know what I’m trying to say, damn it! If only you knew what it felt like...”
A sound like heavy breathing reverberates through the speaker. The noise is long, deep and sexual, as interminable as it is uncomfortable. Dina blanches in disgust.
She doesn’t even want to imagine what is going on at that particular moment. Yet a part of her is strangely fascinated by the ordeal. Her thumb hovers over the stop button, yet she can’t bring herself to push it.
A tingle shoots up her spine. It radiates from her legs to her head, a tickling sensation covering her entire body. The feeling is especially acute in her loins, quivering as they are with lust.
Was the unthinkable happening?
Dina shakes her head. It couldn’t be, and yet the feelings she’s having are undeniable. She pushes the thought away—as difficult as it is to do so.
A feral cry erupts as Julia orgasms. The sound echoes through the room, causing Dina to blush with self-consciousness. Her heart races as she brings the tape to a halt.
The entire floor must’ve heard it. They probably think she’s a slut anyway. No way is she ever going to live this down.
Her hand brushes against something as she pushes the recorder into the envelope. The cardstock couldn’t be more than. Dina lifts it out,
She glances in shock at the business card, a single red rose snaking along the top.
“Beautiful Creatures, Inc.” It reads. “Roxanne Hart, D.D.S.”
“What a small world,” She mutters as she places it on the nightstand.
