Elgin’s Trial
By Mr. J.
Chapter XVIV: A Moment of Clarity
Frank sulks as he sits alone in his cell, nothing but the sound of white noise to accompany him. Thoughts race through his head. He glances through the small glass window at the tiny patch of blue sky, the only clue of a world outside these four walls. He balls his fist, knowing that a hundred souls are walking the streets, enjoying the coming new year while he waits for his arraignment in a cell.
He chaffs at the idea. Yet here he is another nameless face with a number, a cog in the machine to be warehoused and stored until such time as he is needed. He can easily see how one would go crazy under such circumstances. Fortunately, his lawyer posts bail at the end of the week. Not that it makes the loneliness that much more endurable.
That cunt. He should’ve known never to trust her the first day he laid eyes on her. But seeing her in that short skirt and low cut blouse made it difficult to resist—and to think he’d thought of her as something more than just a plaything, an equal. He should’ve wiped the girl’s memories as soon as she let her guard down. But something about her fierce personality and the way her eyes twinkled gave him pause.
Tracy. Just thinking about her name gives him heartburn. There isn’t any other way it can’t be her. It has to be her. He entrusted her with everything. The dossiers, the passwords... Not to mention administrator access to some of the most sensitive corporate information in the world. All the pieces a person would need to put the puzzle together, and wouldn’t you know she did.
Hell, he even fancied setting down and having a life with her. White picket fence, kids, the entire package, and he would’ve walked away if she’d said the word. Maybe he could’ve semi-retired and be a consultant or something. Be an adjunct professor at one of the city’s many business schools. Everything he ever wanted seemed within reach.
There’s no way he could have any of that now. Not when he’s radioactive. The only people who have anything to do with him are the lawyers. Of course they want to. The vultures.
He’ll get his revenge soon enough. Go after her friends and loved ones and eliminate them one by one until there isn’t anything left of them until finally she comes undone in a downward spiral of depression and madness. That’ll teach Tracy not to mess with fire.
Frank cackles madly, imagining the pained look on her face. He can hardly wait.
