Elgin’s Trial
By Mr. J.
Chapter XVII: Damage Control
“What are you waiting for?” Tracy honks her horn repeatedly at the silver sedan in front of her. “Move your ass!”
She breathes in deeply. 10...9...8... She imagines herself back home reclining as she reads her novel, nothing but the dulcet tunes of her favorite jazz station to accompany her. What she’d give to be able to lounge around and do nothing all day. No social interaction, no talking to anyone. Just lounging and catching up on academic work.
Alas, she has to go in. The car sputters as she idles in the center lane. Tracy turns the radio up slightly, the accent-less voice of the anchor floating over the airwaves. She fishes out some ibuprofen from her purse and waits out the traffic. What are a few minutes more?
“Workers at one of Boston’s biotech companies got a rude awakening today as...” The anchor is drowned out in mid-sentence by the noise.
Tracy tries to make out the rest, but it is drowned out by the staccato honking of car horns around her. She shrugs and returns her eyes to the road. Worst case scenario she could always look it up when she comes home. Her concerns fade into the background as the traffic lightens up. Anyway, it wouldn’t be the first time that prisoners have escaped out of jail—and she’s sure it won’t be the last.
She switches to a Top 40 section. Tracy glares at the digital clock. If Frank finds out she’s late he’ll... The thought is quickly banished as the phone rings.
“Not now.” She murmurs.
Between her driving, the bubblegum music in her head and the incessant ringing of the phone the stimuli proves to be too much. The call goes to voice mail, but her head is left throbbing from the information overload. Yet she still manages to steer without incident.
She sighs in relief as she spies the Divinex building in the distance. Tracy grips the steering wheel tightly and coasts towards it.
Her eyes are aghast as she pulls up. FBI agents cart off boxes after boxes as employees look on from behind police tape. Tracy closes her eyes and sighs. Of course.
She picks up the phone as it rings.
“I can’t speak right now...”
“It’s Matt. Did you catch the news?”
“What the hell did you do?”
“I showed the flash drive to my editor as soon as I could. We hashed it out, but apparently he thought it was more important to alert the police than go ahead with the story. I’m sorry, Tracy. I really am.”
“Aggh!” Tracy bangs the phone against the dashboard.
Click.
She spies a teary eyed Rose, her hands shaking as she struggles to control herself.
“What’s wrong?” Tracy hugs her.
“I saw them take him away in handcuffs.” Rose sniffs.
“Him, who him?”
“Frank. They served a warrant on him earlier this morning.” Rose is crestfallen. “They’ve already carted off the computers. I’m scared, Tracy! What are we going to do?”
“Don’t be. I’m sure everything will work out.”
“But...but it’s all over the news!”
Tracy eyes the agents. No doubt Frank has already figured out the truth. He’s probably sitting in his cell planning to confront her as soon as he gets out. No way can she stick around anymore, not for long. She has to call Matt, she has to warn him. But what if he refuses to go along?
“Dammit!” Tracy punches herself.
“Don’t do that!”
“It’s okay Rose, it’s just my shoulder.”
“Why’d you do it then?”
“I just remembered I had to call my doctor.” Tracy excuses herself. “You know how it is.”
Beep beep...beep beep...
“What is it now Tracy?” Matt’s voice is edgy.
“Where are you?”
“Um, work?”
“Is there any way you can take the day off or something?”
“What do you think?”
“Don’t get smart with me.” Tracy growls. “I don’t care if you have to fake sick or something. Just do it, okay?”
“Fuck. I’ll see what I can do.”
Tracy waves at Rose as she ventures back towards her, smiling wanly as if to reassure her.
“So what did the doctor say?” Rose’s voice is pensive.
“Just a routine check-up.”
Tracy bites her lip. Her career at Divinex may be over, but without anything to fall back on, Rose—and everyone like her—is pretty much fucked. She never thought about that possibility when she embarked on her mission of revenge, yet as she considers the chaos unfolding around her, the unintended consequences cut to the quick. A guilty feeling washes over her as she glances at Rose.
She thinks back to the manifest she located on the network. The numbers corresponded to the names...but how? There had to be a way Frank and his crew needed to have a way to keep track of the girls’ movements in real time. But how? It’s like they’d have to have a scanner or something...
An idea pops into her brain.
“Rose?”
“Yeah?”
“When you came here, did they make you get a tattoo?”
The intern is dumb stuck.
“What do you mean?” Rose furrows her brow.
“You know, like a marking or something.”
“What are you talking about? I’ve always had one.”
“Just curious.” Tracy shrugs.
If this were a TV show, Tracy would race home or do something dramatic, but this is the real world and all she can do now is wait...
Tracy rubs her eyes as she hauls her groceries towards her flat. After four hours in a freezing parking lot doing little more than standing around and talking, she could use the rest. She rubs her hands thoroughly and curses her luck. It’s not every day that the company you spied on is raided by federal agents.
She jiggles the key for a minute or two, struggling to unlock the creaking old door. Her hands ache. At last the door finally gives way, allowing her to walk inside. She sighs and rests against the wall, catching her breath. Her body feels spent... She feels spent. Like a used condom.
God, I could use a drink... she thinks to herself. So what if she’s jumping the gun on New Year’s a little early? Everybody’s doing it, right? Oh what the hell. Tracy flicks the switch.
She nearly gasps at the sight of 023980/Jill in her loveseat, clearly comfortable in her jeans and sweatshirt.
“Don’t move!” Tracy shouts as she fishes out her phone “I’m calling the police!”
“No!” 023980 screams. “Stop!”
Tracy freezes.
“Why do you want, money, jewelry?”
“No.” 023980 shakes her head violently.
“What then?”
“I need to you to help me unlock some memories. Important ones.”
Tracy takes a breath.
“Oh Christ...”
