Never Any Excuse Chapter 8 (Mg, Mf, fg, ped, cons) by Uncle
Sky (Edited by R Hoisington)

The car was still moving when I jumped out and rushed to the door
of the safe house. I had the Glock in my hand and didn't even
slow down as I crashed though the front door. I was greeted with
a scene that is burned permanently into my memory. It is one I
see over and over in my dreams.

On the floor near the phone was Joanne's body, partially covered
by Cheryl's still form. Next to them and facing away as I entered
was a man holding Ginger by her arm as she tried to get away.
When he heard my entrance the man turned around and I recognized
him at once. It was Assistant Chief Joseph Longacre, the man who
cost me my police career. I had no time to think about that or
anything else. He was holding a revolver and when he saw me he
reacted in an instant.

Longacre shoved Ginger away and fired at me. I didn't feel
anything and thought he missed. I didn't wait to find out. I
emptied the Glock into his worthless body, tearing it to shreds.

When I was out of ammo I dropped the gun and ran to Cheryl. I
pulled her up into my arms and hugged her close. It was obvious
that she was near death. She opened her eyes for a moment and
said something. I leaned close to listen.

"Did we do it, Sam? Did we keep our promise?"

"What promise, love?"

"Our promise to protect her."

It took me a moment to realize what she meant. She was worried
about Ginger. I glanced around and saw Ginger clinging to another
of my people.

"Yes. We kept our promise, sweetheart. She's safe."

She smiled weakly and whispered again.

"Take care of her, Sam. I love you both."

Her eyes closed, and she slipped away.

I am ashamed to say that I gave no further notice to Joanne or
Ginger. My world was wrapped up in the little body I held in my
arms, and it was over. I sat there and sobbed. Then I heard a
voice behind me.

"It's you own fault. If you'd.." SMACK!

It had been Grange, and I had started toward him as soon as he
uttered the first words. I never made it. There was a flash of
sudden movement, and a body came between us. A fist swung out and
connected with Grange's chin. He folded like an old lawn chair
and slipped to the floor. He wasn't out and started to get up.
The body that had done the damage was Beth. She saved me from
breaking my promise. Before he could get up by himself, she had
him in a hammerlock and was walking him out the door. I heard her
screaming at him but paid no attention to what she was saying. I
returned my attention to Cheryl.

The little girl I had saved and loved and who I had tried so hard
to protect was gone, and as much as I hated to admit it Grange
was right. It was my fault. I may as well have pulled the
trigger myself. I had failed at the most important job of my
life. After all she had gone through, Cheryl ended up paying with
her life for my stupidity.

I don't know how long I sat there holding that sweet little
girl's body, but after some time had passed I realized that
someone was trying to get my attention. It was Beth, and she was
trying to pull me up off the floor.

"Come on, Sam. Get up. There's nothing more you can do for her."

"Grange was right, Beth. It is my fault! I should have protected
her."

"Grange is an ass and is rarely right about anything and
certainly not this. You did all you could, Sam. And Cheryl did
all she could, too. Don't take that away from her. She gave her
life for her friend. Ginger has told us what happened. Cheryl was
on the phone with Grace telling her what was happening when
Longacre broke in. He shot Joanne before she could do anything.
Cheryl was trying to get Joanne's gun when he shot her too. She
was a brave little girl, and don't you dare make her sacrifice
any less by taking the blame for something that wasn't you
fault."

I just shook my head. She didn't understand, I thought. But I
didn't say anything. Then she went on.

"Now you need to go to Ginger and help her. She is like you. She
blames herself for all this. She thinks she should have never run
away from those bastards so none of this would have happened. You
need to make her understand, Sam."

"I can't. I just can't."

I looked around a spotted Amber trying to comfort Ginger. I
called her over.

"Take Ginger over to Mother's. See to it that security is doubled
and tell Mother what happened. I can't deal with her right now. I
can't protect anyone, especially little girls."

Both Beth and Amber just looked at me in shock. Amber started to
say something, but I stopped her.

"JUST DO IT! NOW!"

Amber stepped back in what looked like fear. I had never yelled
at her or any of my employees. Her answer should have made me
realize what I'd done."

"Yes, sir!"

Without any further word she turned and walked away. She gathered
Ginger up and they left. Ginger was sobbing deeply and tears were
running down her cheeks, but I didn't care. I turned to look at
Beth. She was just standing there shaking her head in disbelief.

"The case is yours, Beth. I'm done. You have all the evidence and
the girls are all at Mother's. Go get them and take them into
protective custody. I can't protect them any more. It's over. I'm
going home. If you need me, come and get me. Mike or Amber or
Grace should be able to give you anything you need. I just
retired. I'm done."

I didn't even give her time to reply. I just walked out the door.
I had no car, but there were plenty of company cars there with a
lot of my people. I found one and asked him to take me home. He
nodded and led the way to a car. I was home in just ten minutes.

The first thing I needed to do was get out of the blood soaked
clothes. It was only then that I realized that the bastard hadn't
missed me after all. His aim just wasn't as good as mine. He
had hit me in the left shoulder, and now that the shock was
wearing off it was starting to hurt. The bleeding was minor but I
knew it needed attention. There was no way I wanted to go to the
emergency room, so I called Jack.

Jack was there in minutes and had me fixed up in no time. He said
it was just a flesh wound and would heal fine if I followed his
instructions. I promised I would and he left.

I went in and collapsed on Cheryl's bed and wept. After what
seemed like many hours I fell asleep. I didn't rest, though. I
dreamed of that scene. It was the first of many such dreams that
still haunt me.

The next day I was visited by an FBI agent I didn't know. He told
me he was sorry to bother me, but he needed a statement about the
shooting. I let him in and gave him what he needed and he left.
They didn't bother me again for a week. Oh, the phone rang until
I unhooked it. And there was the occasional knock on the door.
But I didn't answer it, and they went away.

For that week I didn't eat much or shower or anything but cry and
sleep and remember. At the end of that week there was a light
knock on the door. I tried to ignore it, but it persisted and
finally I looked out to see who it was. It was Mother. She saw me
at the window and called out to me.

"Open up, Sam. I'm not going away. I'll stand here for as long as
it takes for you to realize I'm not leaving and let me in. Don't
make an old lady stand here all day, Sam. Open the door."

I opened the door and she swept in with the authority of a mother
who knew what needed to be done. She looked around, taking stock
of the situation, and went to work. No lecture or orders. She
just took over. Her first stop was the kitchen. I plopped down in
a chair and let her have her way. A few minutes later she brought
me a cup of coffee. I sipped it as she returned to the kitchen. I
heard her banging around. I guessed she must be doing the dishes.
After a while she came out again. This time she looked me in the
eye with an expression that told me I had better do as I was
told. I was instructed to go take a shower and shave and brush my
teeth. I just sat there. She reached down, grabbed my ear and
dragged me up out of the chair. I was soon headed for my room.

"Okay, Mother. I'll do as I'm told."

She let me go, and I headed in to my room. I undressed and
stepped into the bathroom. After adjusting the shower I stepped
in. Before I could even start washing I was bawling again. It was
there in that shower that Cheryl and I had started our sex life
together. I could almost see her and feel her lips on my limp
dick. After a while I heard Mother's voice outside the bathroom.

"Wash, Sam. Wash."

It jerked me out of my memory, and I did as I was told. After I
washed I shaved and brushed my teeth. I had to admit to myself
that it felt good to be clean again. I even got dressed in some
clean clothes. I had to. Mother had taken my dirty ones away.
When I stepped into the kitchen Mother pointed to a chair, and I
sat down. She served me a hot breakfast of ham and eggs and home
fries, with toast and juice. I didn't even remember that I had
those things in my fridge. Once I started to eat I realized how
hungry I was. Mother refilled my plate three times before I was
full. I sat back as I wiped my mouth, feeling stuffed but better
than I had for some time.

"Thank you, Mother. That was delicious, and I needed it badly."

She came over and pulled my head against her big breasts in a
comforting hug as if she were my mother and I had been hurt. She
just held me for a bit, and I cried again. She stepped back and
sat down at the table.

"That's enough for now, Sam. You've had time to grieve and you
will have more later. But right now you have responsibilities
that need your attention."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, for one thing you have a business to take care of. If you
really meant it when you said you were retired, then you need to
make it legal so the business can run without you. You have a lot
of loyal employees that depend on you. You owe it to them to see
that things are taken care of."

She paused to let me think about that. Of course she was right.
Isn't Mother always right? Then she took a deep breath and
continued.

"You also need to make arrangements for both Cheryl and Joanne.
Neither of them had anyone to do it. The Coroner's Office has
held off as long as they can. You need to make some decisions, as
hard as that may be."

I nodded.

"Next, since you are working for me on this case, you need to get
the files cleaned up and closed and a final report written for
the record. That is what I'm paying you for."

She smiled as she said that, and I had to smile a little myself.

"And last but not least, you have a responsibility to Ginger. She
is devastated and blames herself for all that has happened. She
is convinced it is all her fault. Nothing any of us can say to
her will change her mind. She is in worse shape than you were.
She won't eat or clean up. She doesn't sleep much, and when she
does she ends up with nightmares and wakes up screaming. I've
tried and Doctor Jack has tried, but nobody can get through to
her. She says you hate her and that's why you sent her away. I
know you're too nice a man to do that to a helpless little girl.
You need to go to her and make her understand it's not her
fault."

I just sat there and thought about what Mother had said. As usual
she was right. But could I do what needed to be done?

"As far as the business goes, I'm not sure I can do it any more.
But you're right about the others involved. I'll go in and talk
to Mike and Grace and set things up so they can run it or what
ever they think is best. I have enough money, so I won't take any
from the business for the time being."

Mother didn't say anything, but I could see she approved.

"I should have made arrangements much sooner but I'll get on that
today. I didn't know about Joanne. I'll check with Amber about
what is best. She knew Joanne, and I'm sure she can guide me.
I'll do the right thing for her. She was a special lady, and we
owe her a lot."

"And, yes, I'll get with Amber about the case too. I'll see to it
that you get the final report as soon as possible. If I'd known
what a slave driver you are, I'd never have taken you as a
client."

Seeing my humor showing through for the first time in a while
made Mother smile and nod her head.

"But I don't know what to do about Ginger. I'll do what I can.
I'll go see her and have a talk with her. I made a promise to
Cheryl the first day we met Ginger that I'd take care of her.
I'll find a way to keep that promise if I can."

Mother seemed satisfied with her work and got up to leave.

"I'm glad you see what needs to be done, Sam. I knew you'd take
action, and I trust you to what's right. Now I have a house full
of girls to take care of, so I'm leaving."

"Do you still have Mary and the others staying with you?"

"Yes. I do for now. You'll hear the details later but the case is
closed as far as they are concerned, and the FBI and U.S.
Attorney think it's safe. I've been granted temporary custody
until the County can figure out what is best for them."

"You are probably what's best for them, Mother. I know you'll
take good care of them."

"Thank you, Sam. Good bye for now. And remember, Sam, she loved
you and would expect you to do the right thing. Don't let her
down."

And with that she swept out the same way she came in. This time
as a Mother who had set things right.

I had to make some calls before I went out. The first was to
Beth. I used her work number and was transferred around until
someone finally told me she didn't work there and they had no
forwarding information. I flashed back on that night. She must
have lost her job just like I had for hitting a superior. I felt
bad about that. I dialed her private number. She answered on the
first ring.

"It's about time you called, Sam."

"Yeah. I'm sorry about that, but I just couldn't talk about it. I
tried at your office, but they said you didn't work there. I take
it you got Sam'd."

"I didn't give Grange the chance. I submitted my resignation
along with my report the next day."

"Can we meet some place and talk? I need a rundown on what has
happened since that night."

"Sure. How about your office?"

"Good. I'm about to head there any way. I should be there in less
than an hour. I have a lot to do, so come in any time."

"Okay. See you later."

I hung up and headed to the office. When I got there I went right
to my own office and didn't say anything to anyone. I didn't
realize until later that nobody said anything to me, either.
Normally there would have been greetings from various people I
passed. I sat down at my desk and was surprised to see it was
clear. I had expected a lot of reports and paper work, but there
was none. I picked up the phone and dialed Grace's number. Her
secretary answered, and I asked if she was in. I was told she
was, and I asked she be informed I was on the way and would like
to speak with her.

Next I called Mike and asked him to meet me in Grace's office. He
agreed, and I hung up. I went to meet with them. It was a short
meeting. I explained that I needed some time off and didn't know
when or if I would be back. I asked them to continue running
things and to take over my P.I. side of the operation
temporarily. I suggested they get the company attorney to draw up
any papers that were needed to give them authority. They promised
to do that right away and let me know if I needed to sign
something.

Having that out of the way I headed to Amber's office. This was
going to be harder, but I needed to be briefed on what our people
had done on the case and where it stood. Amber smiled when I went
into her office, but it was a small, reserved smile.

"Hi, Sam. What do you need?"

"I need a lot of things, Amber. But I think only time will give
them to me. Right now I need a briefing on the case. But first I
need to ask you for a favor."

"Sure, Sam. Anything I can do, I will."

"This is outside you normal duties. It's a personal favor for me
and you can refuse if you don't want to do it. Agreed?"

"Okay. No problem."

"I understand you knew Joanne pretty well."

A cloud seemed to pass over her face as she answered.

"Yes. We were good friends. I miss her."

"Well, I was wondering if you would make the arrangements for her
funeral. I understand she had no family, and I want her to have
the best. I know you'll do it right. All expenses are to be
covered by the company. Will you take care of it?"

"I'd be proud to. Thank you for asking me."

"Good. Make sure everyone here knows when and where the funeral
will be and that they will be on a paid day off to attend if they
can be spared."

"Fine. I'm sure there will be a lot who will want to go. She was
well liked."

"Since you are going to be doing that, I wonder if you'd also
handle the same thing for Cheryl. She had no family, either. I
want the very best, and all expenses are to be charged to my
personal account. If you agree to handle it I think you should
get together with Grace. They spent a lot of time talking, and
I'm sure she'll have some ideas about what is the right thing to
do."

"I'd be glad to handle that for you, Sam. I'll get with Grace
right away. When we have the plans made I'll get with you so you
can have final say. But there is one thing, Sam."

"Oh? What's that?"

"She did have a family. Right here in this building. We are all
her family and have been since the first day she came in. We all
just adopted her as one of us and loved her very much. We all
miss her a lot."

"Thanks. I'm sure she knew that. She loved coming down here to
spend time and say hello to everyone. Now, let's get to the
briefing."

"Okay. First the details of the attack. It seems that Longacre
used his skills to find and disable our outside guards. They were
knocked out with a heavy object but are not seriously injured. I
guess he figured if they didn't see him he didn't need to kill
them. Once he had taken them out he started to scout around the
house. When the guards didn't answer a check in call, we called
into the house. That's when we told you there was something going
on there.

"Joanne was trying to watch all the possible entries and put
Cheryl on the phone to keep in touch with the office. Longacre
broke in, and in spite of her training Joanne was no match for
his experience. He got off the first shot, and she went down.
Cheryl screamed that Joanne was shot as she reached for Joanne's
gun. We heard her over the phone even though she had dropped it.
We heard the next shot right after her scream. It was about a
minute later that you rushed in and shot him.

"There really isn't much else to tell you from our side. Your
last order was to turn it all over to the FBI, so we did. We shut
down our operation and gave everything to them. We wrote up our
reports, and after Mike reviewed them we gave copies to the FBI.
They came here and held interviews with everyone who had anything
to do with the case, and that was it. They let the girls stay
with Mother and put their own men on security there. Jennie
stayed for a couple of days to help out, but then she had to stop
since we had no authority. We were notified that none of our
people were in any trouble, but that you would be served as per
your agreement with the U.S. Attorney."

"Okay. I'd like to review the case from start to finish. Would
you set up the tapes and files so I can do it in one shot?"

"Sure thing. I'll set it up in one of our small rooms so you can
be alone and take your time."

"Thank you, Amber. You have been a great help and I appreciate
the extra you are taking on for me. You can reach me here at the
office for a while or at my private cell number if you need
anything."

"Will do, Sam."

I went back to my office to wait for Beth. I figured she would
have to fill me in on what was going on with the case since we
dropped it. But then I wondered if she knew. She had said she
left the FBI the next day. I was lost in thought when I heard a
voice at the door. I looked up to see Beth standing there.

"Come in and sit down. Can you fill me in on what happened after
I left?"

For the next hour Beth went over the case. It seems that the FBI
decided they couldn't wait now that one of the perp's had made
such a mess. Whitehead had sworn out warrants on all the names in
that little book George had, and within hours they were all under
arrest for multiple Federal and Stae felonies. Within days after
being faced with the evidence all parties confessed. Beth had
already left her job, but her friends had kept her advised. She
said that there was information that some lower level police had
been involved but had not known the full extent of the operation.
She suggested I talk to Wilson if I wanted to know more on that
angle. I agreed. I should have thought about him sooner. Finally
she just sat back and stared at me without saying anything more.

"As I said on the phone, Beth. I'm really sorry about you losing
your job. I know that was important to you. What are you going to
do now?"

"No big deal, Sam. I was tired of taking Grange's crap any way. I
found a new job right away and I like it better. I work for a
nice guy at good pay and no politics. And I do the same kind of
work."

"That's great. Give me your number so I can call you if I need to
or if I just want to talk."

She smiled and said, "476".

"476 what's the rest?"

"That's all. Just 476. It's my extension number."

"Oh. Okay what's the main number?"

"You really are slow sometimes, Sam. Pick up your phone and dial
476."

I stared at her and did as she said, still not tumbling to what
was going on. The phone rang and her voice mail answered. "Hi.
This is Beth Cantrell. I'm out of the office right now, but if
you leave a message after the tone, I'll get back to you ASAP. If
that's you Sam, just hang up and tell me what you want."

She was sitting there laughing. I finally caught on. How dumb can
you get. It was an extension number here at my company. She
worked for me. Or at least she thought she did.

"After what happened I called Mike to tell him I was no longer on
the case and how to get hold of me if they needed anything. He
offered me a job, and I took it. I'll be in charge of field ops
once I get set up."

We talked for a while, and then I left. I needed to get out of
there and headed home. I stopped on the way when I remembered
Wilson. I asked him about his side of the case, and he filled me
in. Internal affairs had seven vice cops under investigation and
suspected there were more. He was acting as liaison between the
PD, the FBI, and my office. Once the case broke the PD had
started their own investigation of other operations involving
those who were part of this case. It looked like they would all
do hard time. All except George, that is. It seems he made a deal
to testify against all the others in return for a lighter prison
term. But he would be a registered sex offender when he got out
and would be on probation for a long time. That is, if he
survived his short time in prison. Inmates were well known for
not liking child molesters.

I thanked Wilson for his help and went home. I knew there was one
more thing I needed to do, but I put it off until after I got
some more rest and had dinner. Then I called Mother and asked if
it was okay to come over. She said it was about time, and so I
made the trip I dreaded most.

I went to see Ginger.

The end of chapter 8.
