For a time, Edith enjoys a much more pleasurable lifestyle. Unfortunately, she fails to realize how easy it is to spend money when one uses a plastic card for payment rather than cash. As her credit card debt mounts, she struggles to curtail her spending and works longer hours in an attempt to retire her debt. At this point, her "friend" Julia persuades her to go to the track. Mesmerized by the thrill of gambling, Edith's credit card is very quickly at its credit limit. With the credit card company demanding payment, she seems to have no way out. That is, until the President of the her husband's bank offers her a job. But with a $20,000 debt at 14% to 20% interest, even this new job is not enough. At the end of her rope, Edith realizes that "there's a great deal of money in a bank". At this point, the bottomless pit opens.
