60 Minutes Interview

I recall a "60 Minutes" episode that the readers might find of interest. It was about '95, the first wave of runaway auto stories. This was an article on the car known in the U.S. as the Audi 5000. They had a high incidence of the throttle sticking open.

Morley or somebody was interviewing an Indian woman. She was dressed in western clothes but retained a refined Indian accent. She was a profesional's wife, well dressed, about 40 with a wide attractive face. It seems her Audi 5000 has accellerated out of control when she shifted into reverse. She have run over a gas station attendant standing behind her car and continued dragging him backwards until she hit the building, killing him.

Old Morely was treating her gently because he was sure it was a tramatic experience, having a gas station attendant die beneath her Audi. But she seemed to be bearing up well. Hell, she was almost cheerful, thrilled at all the attention and being on T.V. She stated with wide sencere eyes that after all it was not her fault, there was nothing she could do about it. Morley: "So then... did the car actually.. drive *over* him....?" "Oh yes! I ran him right over!" she replied excitedly. "He went right underneath my car!" "I ran him completely over!" "In fact, he was still under the car when they came!" Not only was she totally without guilt. She outwardly expressed no regret. Like she driven through your lawn by mistake. She smiled and said thank you as they ended the interview.

I'd always thought those were sexy woman's cars. And they've had a special place since. And I'm a sucker for accents.
