mattresses that would be flown in from Germany.  By midday things were
starting to take shape, our compliment of trucks and equipment had been
arriving all morning and our men were already hard at work.
   The old buildings were being renovated, generators installed, fences
repaired and new ones erected.
   At 2.00pm thirty-five men were asked to volunteer to capture the village
below before word leaked out of the German presence.  It was approximately
15 kilometres away
   Two armoured half trucks with heavy machine guns, a truck for the troops
and one for any captives set off, the men were in great spirits.  No
resistance was expected and by skirting the main roads all exits were
covered.  The advance guard drove boldly into the main cobble stoned
square.
   With a loud hailer Heinz called in Russian for the inhabitants to come
out and surrender.  "Don't be afraid we are looking for soldiers and
saboteurs.  Workers and peasants will not be harmed." There were a few
spasmodic shots from some deluded patriots.  Their fire was savagely
answered and they were quickly eliminated.  Soon reality told the villages
that resistance was useless and slowly they began to emerge from their
ramshackle houses and assemble in the square, some holding strips of white
cloth to indicate their surrender.  Immediately some of the captive men
were put to work clearing a section of the square of snow.
   As soon there was a suitable area clear Obergruppenführer Dr Karl Lutze.
ordered a table and chair to be put at one end and the area to be cordoned
off with ten Waffen SS armed with machine pistols.  Two more soldiers stood
to attention as bodyguards while, the rest begin a search of the houses.
   The depleted population that had gathered in the square numbered
probably no more than one hundred.  It was divided it into three groups,
Aryan females, males, others.  The males, numbering about 30 were either
children or old men, they were marched away into one of the vacant houses.
At a glance a couple may have been of some use as labourers, the rest old
men and young boys would have to be executed.  A Half dozen or so women
were discovered hiding in the houses and were dragged screaming by their
hair into the square.  All were lined up for inspection and paraded past me
for selection.  Two women had young children and some were not much more
then children themselves.
   Male children were taken away from their mothers, they were of no value
to us or the Third Reich.  Female children were kept with their mothers as

tried to be fair and realistic, He walked slowly up and down the row of

departed, approximately fifteen minutes later machinegun fire was heard,
those men and boys considered dangerous or of no value were eliminated.

and used to amuse the troops.
   It was unfortunate but this was a war of survival, to the victor would
go the spoils, the slaves and the women.
   Finally the transport arrived back to the relative safety of what was
still our rudimentary base camp.  It would be eventually know as
"Fruchtbarer Boden." The men on duty there were relieved and sent into the
