Chapter 1Kelly inched along the branch of the old oak tree at the bottom of the garden. It was Saturday morning on one of those perfect lazy blue days that normally make summer so perfect. Regrettably all her school friends had gone away for the holidays, her father was at work and her mother was busy in the kitchen so she was feeling a little bored. Having heard the unaccustomed sound of children's voices over the previous two weeks, she decided to peek over the fence, particularly as she could hear a lot of laughter today.
Years ago her father had built a tree house in the lowest fork of the tree and this had been a convenient platform for her to watch the activities of the cranky old couple who had lived next door. Old Mr. Harston disliked children and had built a six foot high solid wood fence around his property to keep the neighborhood children out. However he had died a few months previously and his handicapped wife had moved away to live with her family, leaving the house empty.
Then she had seen the new family move in two weeks previously. For years Kelly had avoided the neighborhood boys as she regarded them as pests who used to tease her and her friends. Since passing her twelfth birthday she had been finding that these annoying creatures were becoming more interesting. She did not understand why, but the thought of one possibly living next door was intriguing and she decided to find out how many children there were. The tree house was very stable but she was only able to see enough to be tantalizing. Regrettably it was the peak of summer and the dense foliage covering the huge old tree made it very difficult to see through, which left her feeling very frustrated. From what she was able to glimpse through the waving branches, it appeared that a large portable swimming pool had been set up.

A girl and boy appearing to be about her age were playing in the pool, while lying in a deck chair alongside was a tall man whom she took to be their father. Through the gaps in the leaves she watched as he occasionally had to duck to avoid the splashes that were directed his way. This accounted for the hysterical laughter Kelly had heard. As her view was being constantly obscured, she looked around for a better viewpoint, and realized that there was a gap in the leaves near the next branch up. It was quite a bit higher than the tree house but with some difficulty she managed to clamber up to it. Just above the main branch she was standing on, was a lighter one that provided a convenient place to hold onto as she sidled toward the end.
Suddenly there was a loud 'CRACK' and she felt the branch bend slowly beneath her. Frantically she grabbed the nearest thing, which turned out to be a bundle of small twigs and leaves at the end of the branch above. When she realized that her grip was slowly stripping the leaves and she would be unable to hold for more than a few seconds so she yelled, "HELP!"
Hearing the yell, the man looked up, and when he saw what was about to happen, ran up to the fence and standing under her said, "You can let go, I'll catch you."
Kelly was so scared all she could do was hang on as tightly as possible and shake her head. Suddenly the twigs that were supporting her gave way, and with a loud shriek she fell. The man caught her, and after lowering her to the ground, smiled and said, "Hello young lady. We like people to pop in, but doing it like this is a little bit unusual."
Kelly was so embarrassed that she didn't know what to say and just looked down while sort of shuffling her feet. Just then the girl ran up and in one long sentence said, "Are you O/K?... not hurt I hope?... My name is Dana Howard.... I'm 11... this is my dad... his name is Brian Howard... what's your name... how old are you?" and as the boy arrived behind her she added, "and this is my brother Mike."
Finally taking a deep breath, she paused expectantly.
Kelly looked up and found a slim and very pretty blond girl about her own size, and a taller and very nice looking boy whose age she could only guess at.

"Hello. It seems that Kelly was up your tree and a branch broke. Fortunately I was able to catch her so she is quite unhurt."

"Howard, Brian Howard. Perhaps I should introduce myself and these two more formally, but since it appears that we are to be neighbors, perhaps it may be easier if we went back to the house and I will make us some coffee."
Kelly's mother replied, "That is very nice of you, but I will have to return home first as I rushed out without locking the house. I'll be back in a few minutes."
Brian said, "Okay, when you get back just come around the back and walk in. The door will be open."
Dana turned to Kelly and said, "Come on Kelly, let's beat them," then grabbed Kelly's hand so she had no option but to run with the exuberant girl. When they reached the kitchen, Dana turned on the coffee maker and said, "Grab a chair while I change out of these wet undies."
By the time Brian and Mike walked in, she had returned to the kitchen dressed in shorts and blouse to find Brian was busy putting out cups and saucers for them and glasses for the children, when there was a knock on the back door.
He called, "Come in, we're all in the kitchen," and as Kelly's mother walked in he continued, "Grab a seat while I change out of these wet clothes."
A few minutes later the four of them were settled with a large pot of steaming fragrant coffee for the adults and 3 glasses of orange for the children.
Brian started, "Perhaps I should start first. As I said, my name is Brian Howard and this imp with the bedraggled hair is my daughter Dana who is 11," then as she protested, Brian grinned then added, "OK, almost 12," then tousling the boy's hair he said, "and this is my son Mike who is 14."
The look on Mike's face at this indignity caused some giggling from the girls as Brian continued, "Perhaps it may be easier if I told you now rather than leave you wondering. My former wife and I separated about 2 years ago, and we were trying to stay friends for the sake of the children, but regrettably she met a new man. I'm sure that there was something between them before she left us, but after a while her new partner started causing some very major problems. The kids and I had a family discussion and although it was sad, we decided that the only option was for me to transfer to another branch of my company and put some distance between us."
Then he continued, "Now Kelly, perhaps you would like to introduce your mother."
Kelly looked at her mother, and then at Dana's father, then back to her mother again and with a huge grin she stood, curtsied and very formally said, "Mr. Howard, Dana and Mike, may I introduce my mother, Karen Edmonds. My father is Paul Edmonds but he's at work today."
Brian laughed, "Well done Kelly, very nicely put."
For the next 40 minutes, they chatted about their respective families while the 3 children listened with interest. Finally Karen said, "Much as I would like to stay, I should really get back and prepare lunch for Paul. Come on Kelly, you had better come too."
Dana exclaimed, "Can Kelly please stay and come swimming with us Mrs. Edmonds?" Kelly stood and looked back and forth hopefully between her mother and Dana, and finally her mother said to Brian, "Well, as long as it is no problem for you."
"None as far as I am concerned Karen. Dana and Mike haven't had many close friends for the last year and as they don't know anybody here, it will be a good chance for them to meet people and perhaps make new friends."
"O/K, Kelly come back with me and get your swimsuit. You can stay until 1:00 when lunch will be ready for your father."
Kelly whooped gleefully and ran down the drive with her grinning mother in tow and a few minutes was back, dressed in a two piece swimsuit. For the next hour the three children had a marvelous time, swimming, ducking each other and making the most of the warm summer day.
Finally at about 12:45 Kelly said, "I'm sorry but I have to leave for lunch."
Dana asked, "Can you come back afterward?"
"I don't think so. We are going to my Aunt's this afternoon and we have church tomorrow so I think it will be Monday before I'm free."
Dana looked quite downcast but said, "Bye Kelly. Come back as soon."
Chapter 2For Kelly the weekend seemed to pass very slowly. There was something about the irrepressible Dana that really attracted her, and Mike seemed to be a really nice boy and more than once she had studied him when he was unaware that she was watching.
Monday morning she had finished her chores by 10:00. Grabbing her swimming togs and towel she walked next door and as she turned the corner at the rear of the big house she saw Dana already in the pool. As soon as she appeared Dana yelled, "You can use my bedroom to change. Just go through the Kitchen and it's the second door on the left."
Mike was in the kitchen and greeted her as she walked in and as she replied, she mentioned that his father was at work and wouldn't be home until late.
This set the pattern for the next few days. Each day after she had finished her chores, she would return to Dana's house and spend all day there. Some days she had lunch with her new friends while on the other days her mother would invite all three to her house. Kelly could not remember when she had such a fun week. Thursday came and late that afternoon they were relaxing in the pool before she went home for dinner. When they pulled the case out and opened it, they found it contained several items of expensive looking sheer black underwear and a rather attractive makeup case. Dana decided it must have been her mother's and had possibly been left behind when she moved out.

"You did really, but it was not your fault. It was just my beliefs, and I really feel that I want to explain them. My parents are Christians and have always told me that to have sex before marriage is a sin and I was never to touch myself 'down there'. The rest of the morning was as much fun as ever and things were just as if nothing had happened. Kelly enjoyed herself immensely and invited Dana and Mike back home for lunch. She helped her mother prepare the meal and after the dishes were done they excused themselves and returned to sit by the pool.
After about an hour, Mike said, "I'm going to the Mall. You two guys be okay here?"
