Andrew Roller Presents
GIRL PATROL
Chapter Twenty-Seven
It was a gulch, but Becky had found a four-leaf clover on the rim of
it and so now she and Kim were down in the ravine, looking for more. The
crag fell into shadow as the sun neared the horizon. Down amidst the
gathering gloom, Becky suddenly saw something just beyond a rock.
Cuddles! Becky cried. She rushed forward toward the bear. Kim,
hearing her voice, came running after. Becky was about to throw her arms
about the beloved stuffed toy when suddenly two other hands, smaller
even than hers, yanked it up from the ground. And there, standing next to a
big old tree that had died some years earlier, was a little girl! Becky
stopped dead in her tracks. She stared at the child. She looked about
five-years-old. Kim, who was still running through the dense brush that
grew amidst the clover, came slamming into Beckys back. Both girls
toppled over. When they had managed to stand up the girl was still there.
Hi! Kim offered. She was about to raise her hand in greeting when
another voice, less generous, snapped,
Gimmie my bear! The five-year-old hugged the bear closer.
Its not a bear. Its beaver, the five-year-old said. At least to
me.
Its a bear! Becky insisted. She advanced on the smaller girl. Her
hands balled into fists. She looked about to try snatching the bear from
the girl but Kim put a restraining hand on her shoulder. The five-year-old,
despite finding herself outnumbered by two to one, and by bigger girls at
that, stuck out her tongue. Beckys face turned red. She lunged at the girl.
But the little one was quick; she dodged out of the way.
Gimmie! Becky insisted. Kim caught up to her friend and put both
hands on her shoulders this time. She was still astonished that they had
found someone. Best not to pick a fight right away.
Are you a vampire? Kim asked. It was the only danger she could
foresee in the little girl, who definitely wasnt a werewolf. Unless, of
course, you wanted the bear in her hands.
No, the girl said. Kim let out a sigh of relief. She was about to
say pleased to meet you when Becky wriggled free of her grasp and made
another grab at the bear. The girl was quick, but Becky was learning her
moves. Kim arrived just in time, and pulled Becky back before she knocked
the smaller girl to the ground.
I found it! the five-year-old said, clutching the stuffed animal.
Well I lost it! Becky cried. She wriggled in Kims grasp, but the
older girl had a better grip on her now. Though it wouldnt last, if Becky
were determined.
Becky, please! Kim pleaded. We just met her.
She can go away now, Becky said. The five-year-old took this as a
suggestion and was just starting to turn, and looked likely to be set on
running, when Becky snapped, But leave the bear!
I said, its not a bear! Its a beaver! the five-year-old said.
Its a bear, stupid! Becky replied.
My names not stupid. Its chloe! the five-year-old said.
Thats a start, Kim said, still holding on to Becky, a hopeful note
in her voice. Im Kim, and this girl is Becky. It looks like youve got a
bear just like hers! Kim smiled. The five-year-old looked down at her
possession.
Its a beaver, she said. And its mine.
NO IT ISNT! Becky cried.
Girls! Girls! Kim said. Were never going to get anywhere like
this, and we wont find any four-leaf clovers either. Look, its getting
dark. We should go find Brian, in case theres vampires out. This set the
five-year-olds mind to whatever it had been on before the girls had
arrived, which might have been supper, for she said, noticing the
diminishing light,
I have to go home now. She rubbed her nose. Becky, seeing that at
least one of the five-year-olds hands had left the precious bear to attend
to her nose, asked,
Can we go with you?
Kay, the girl answered, the enmity between them buried as
quickly as it had begun. They turned and began walking. The little one led
the way, the two older girls following. They came to a dirt path and the
little girl led them up it. About halfway up Kim told Becky to stop and she
whispered in her ear. The five-year-old, not wanting to feel left out,
asked,
Whatre you two whispering about?
Nothing, Kim said. I was just reminding her to be good. Becky
frowned. In fact, Kim had told her, Dont mention about our costumes.
She might want one. Which, of course, would prove to be a zero-sum
proposition, since the only costumes the girls had were the ones they
were wearing. So the girls did not try to float out of the ravine, but
instead followed little Chloe, as if they were as unable to fly as they
suspected she was.
Once out of the ravine, the girls were again surrounded by forest.
But soon the trees thinned and, just as darkness was falling, they found
themselves in a village.
Wow! Do your mom and dad live here? Kim asked. Chloe nodded.
Still hugging the bear, she led them in among the houses. They were alone
as they passed between the ramshackle huts. They could hear others but
they were inside, or out by the river.
This is my house! Chloe said. She opened a door. The girls
followed her in.
Lord almighty! was heard a moment later, as a woman came out of
a side room. Seeing the two girls with Chloe, she darted for her daughter.
She yanked her up into her arms. Chloe let out a howl, dropping the bear.
Becky leapt forward and grabbed it.
NO! Chloe cried. Her mother grabbed a decidedly less gentle item,
from off a peg where it hung on the wall. It was a wooden stake.
Get out of here, by the Lord Cheese Christ! Chloes mother shouted.
Kim put up her hands as Becky clutched her beloved bear, both of them
looking utterly frightened. Chloe began to cry.
My beaver! she wailed.
Dont stab us, please! Kim had the presence of mind to say. The
woman, startled that the two little girls were still standing in her house,
jabbed her stick at them, but seemed afraid to get close enough to plunge
it into their chests.
Cheese Christ! Cheese Christ! she called out again. Kim looked at
Becky, her hands still in the air as Becky still held tight to her bear.
I think shes trying to say Jesus Christ, Kim finally said to her
friend. The woman lowered her stick. She looked at the girls. Chloes
crying ebbed. She looked woefully at the bear in Beckys arms.
You are very powerful, the woman said. She edged closer. The
girls, seeing that she still had the stake in her hand, stepped back toward
her front door. Suddenly a man came through it. The two little girls
whirled about. They were surrounded on all sides.
