Andrew Roller Presents
GIRL PATROL
Chapter Twenty-Three
The house had been beautiful once, but now it was on fire. But it
would take another good hour for the flames to reach the front of it, for it
was a vast mansion. A computer billionaire had lived here until two days
ago. In the parlor, Esmelda sat with her husband Vlad. Across from them,
not quite as calm as the two vampires he was facing, was Alfonse
Giovanni. He wasnt so bad at mesmerism, as it turned out. He had
mesmerized the president of the United States.
Good work, Alfonse, Vlad told the nervous Italian.
Thank you, Alfonse said. He brushed imaginary dust off his silk
suit.
He was an easy target, Esmelda said. She waved her hand
dismissively.
The Christians are rather gullible. Take the mind and you can get it
to believe anything, Vlad agreed. He smiled. Even in vampires.
The whole world knows we exist now, you know, Alfonse said. He
clasped his hands.
Your Masquerade was a joke, Esmelda said. All those centuries
you suffered in silence, when all along the world was yours to take.
Yours!
Now it is yours, madam, Alfonse told the woman.
Yes, Esmelda smiled. Pity the hamburgers have to spread fucking
nuclear radiation all over the place before they die.
We are impervious, madam. It wont affect us, Alfonse assured
Esmelda.
No, but it makes the blood taste rather unpleasant, Esmelda said.
It will wear off in time, Im told, Alfonse said.
Theres no tainted blood in the future, Vlad told his wife. She
glared at him.
Thats five billion years in the future, she snapped at her husband.
I dont want to wait five billion years to drink untainted blood.
We could make quite a profit if we could find an untainted supply,
Alfonse mused. Vlad arched an eyebrow. Esmelda scowled at the mention
of money, but the prospect of drinking tainted blood was already becoming
something of a major annoyance. She didnt like it, and the wraith
vampires were complaining about it. Suddenly, she stood up. The nervous
silk-suited Italian nearly fell out of his chair in terror.
I must have pure blood! Esmelda declared. She turned to her
husband. We can get some from our future.
Or from any time, madam, even the past! Alfonse said, for he knew
everything about the time machine now, Esmelda saw little reason to keep
it a secret now that she owned the world. But it was a fucked-up world.
She had miscalculated. She had thought nuclear war would be helpful, and
indeed she had had nothing to do with it. Nobody had been mesmerized, the
thing had started on its own because the hamburgers were stupid. Now
she was stuck with tainted blood and she was not about to put up with
that.
We cant get into the past! Esmelda roared at Alfonse. My stupid
husband screwed things up and his machine only goes five billion years
forward or back to now. Thats it. Were either here, or there. She
looked at Vlad. And here weve got tainted blood.
Okay, so, fuck it. Well go get some blood from our future, Vlad
told his wife. Its not a problem.
Unless we blow up, Esmelda said. Vlad made a face.
The sun isnt going to blow up while were there, he said.
Its going to blow up pretty damn soon! You said so yourself!
Esmelda cried to him.
Well get the machine. Well get the blood. Well come back, Vlad
told his wife.
Excuse me, madam, but the back wall is burning, Alfonse said,
clasping his hands again and then pointing.
YEEEK! Esmelda cried. She turned and saw that the back of the
parlor had indeed been reached by the flames. They were eating through it,
and now a flame seemed to dart out at her.
Lets go, Vlad said. He rose up, and then the Italian did also.
Together the three fled the house, and as they came down the front steps
Vlad, seeing a wraith in the distance that was sucking blood from a little
girl, called out to it. You! Come here! Vlad said. The wraith turned.
Suddenly he realized there was something strange about the little girl.
Seeing him, she came forward also. As she did she reached up and took one
of the wraiths mist-like hands. Vlad abruptly realized that the girl had
not been victimized by the wraith, she had been kissing him. And the
wraith had been kissing her back. Whats going on here? Vlad asked, as
the two lovers walked up, one human and the other a vampire.
Hi, the little girl said. The wraith nodded to Vlad, then to the girl,
as if introducing her. Esmelda frowned. Wraiths were supposed to kill
humans, not take them as friends. She felt uncomfortable. The wraith
seemed somehow less interested in her, less slavish, as if suddenly
independent-minded. Or too mindful of the girl.
Die, little one, Esmelda was about to say, but suddenly the little
girl smiled at her. To Esmeldas surprise, the little girl had fangs.
Im Jan, the girl told Esmelda.
