Andrew Roller Presents
GIRL PATROL
Chapter Nineteen
It looked like spring break gone wild. People were everywhere. The
streets were impassable, cars stopped or overturned and burning. Shots
were ringing out, but they werent stopping the looting. Amidst this
carnage appeared two figures. Unlike the other people who could be seen,
they didnt run or show any sign of fear. The man stepped calmly over a
toppled rubbish bin, his wife skirted a corpse and smiled.
Wonderful evening, isnt it? Vlad said to his wife.
Yes, Esmelda answered. We should have no problem feeding
tonight. Suddenly a man appeared out of the darkness. He looked
desperate, yet frightened at the same time. He was dressed in a shabby
coat and he pointed a gun at Vlad.
Gimmie everything you got! the man said. Vlad raised an eyebrow.
Esmelda kept walking, barely noticing the man or his gun. The man, seeing
his prey moving past him, had to run to catch up to them. Hey! he cried
to Vlad. He trained his gun on Esmelda. Gimmie everything or she gets
it! Vlad was quick to respond. But the man with the gun was quicker.
Altering his aim slightly, he fired. Vlads arms were above the man and
about to enclose him when the bullet from the mans gun hit Vlad right in
the chest. Vlad teetered backwards. He looked stunned for a moment, then
he regained his balance. He lunged at the man. Before the man could get
off another round, his neck had two fangs in it. Vlad drained the mans
blood as he screamed in terror. Esmelda stopped and turned toward the
scene. Smiling with amusement at the mans screams, she watched her
husband consume his life essence. The inflowing blood began a healing
process; Vlad was feeling much better a minute later when he had finished
with the man.
A drained corpse, the man fell to the ground. His gun went clattering
along the rubbish-strewn sidewalk. Vlad wiped blood from his mouth with
the back of his hand. He smacked his lips. He looked at his wife, then
down at his chest. The hole in his flesh was closing rapidly. In a few
hours, he would be good as new, with perhaps only a light scar there to
indicate hed received a mortal wound. Or, perhaps, there would be no scar
at all. Being dead was a great way to stay out of the hospital. But the
suit was another matter. Vlad shook his head at the hole in the fabric. He
would need a new one; he wasnt going to wear a suit that had been
patched.
Pity about the suit, Esmelda said, reading her husbands thoughts.
The nearest tailor I trust is five billion years in the future, Vlad
said. Esmelda nodded.
Youll have to settle for off the rack wear, she said.
Damn, Vlad swore. Nice meal, though, he said. He turned and
briefly looked at the corpse. Then he and his wife walked on, and as they
did the lights suddenly went out. Looks like the hamburgers
have lost their electrical power, Esmelda said.
Pity. The darkness can be so terrifying, Vlad smiled to his wife.
