                                                GIRL PATROL

                                              Chapter Sixteen

So you are dead like I am, Vlad said, his eyes brightening with
sudden understanding.
Yes, the finely dressed, silk-suited man answered. His fingers
played on the fabric of Vlads upholstered chair. Vlad sat in a chair next
to his. Esmelda was upstairs. It was up to Vlad to entertain visitors.
You are not a hunter, Vlad said, suddenly producing the plasma
rifle, pulling it up from under a table next to his chair. There was a dark
cloth covering the table. It rippled as he pulled the rifle out from under it.
His guest was just as quick, pulling a pistol from his coat pocket. The
two men nearly punched holes in each other.
Are you? the visitor in the silk suit asked Vlad. The vampires
eyes flared. He tried to use mesmerism on the man. Admittedly he was no
master of mesmerism like his wife, but to his dismay the visitor matched
him, his own eyes growing red. Vlad felt a strange desire to drop the
plasma rifle. He hoped the visitor felt the same way about his pistol.
Their eyes faded almost at the same moment.
We can agree on things without mesmerism, the visitor said.
Yes, Vlad agreed. So this man was a vampire! He claimed to be
from an ancient family of vampires, one that had survived over the
centuries. A real, present day vampire, one of this era! Though,
admittedly, by his own account, his family was down to just himself and
his brother now. Tell me about your brother, Vlad said, when the glow
in his eyes was no more. Quietly he slipped the plasma rifle back under
the table, rippling the black cloth that covered the table again, feeling and
hearing the clunk! of the rifle going back into the open box there. The
visitor, a man who went by the name of Alfonse Giovanni, put away his
pistol.
My brother is in the platinum business, Alfonse said. He lives in
South Africa.
Ah, Vlad said, but the place was unknown to him. What brings you
to Sun City? Vlad asked.
Im in the business of keeping people happy, Alfonse said. This
time Vlads Ah of agreement was more knowing.
I am not unfamiliar with this business, Vlad said.
Then you market drugs as well? Alfonse said.
         Yes, Vlad replied.
Perhaps we could join forces, Alfonse said. Vlad raised an
eyebrow.
Why would I want to do that? Vlad asked. The visitor leaned
forward.
Because you killed my man and took over the business yourself,
the visitor hissed. He pulled out his pistol again, and Vlad was just as
quick with his plasma rifle.
Just then Esmelda appeared, coming downstairs.
And how are you two getting along? she asked, as she came into
the room. She saw the guns. Men, she muttered. Vlads plasma rifle
wavered.
This is Alfonse, Vlad told his wife. The visitors pistol dropped to
his lap. Esmelda, ignoring the gun, walked over to the man and offered him
her pale hand.
Pleased to meet you, Alfonse, she said. She touched his hand and
found it reassuringly cold. He smiled slightly as he found her touch
similarly cold. She was, indeed, dead like he was.
As I am you, madam, Alfonse said with old-world courtesy, and a
French accent.
What brings you to Arizona? The sun is so bright here, Esmelda
said with distaste briefly curling her lips.
Indeed. It is, Alfonse said. Which is why Im wondering why your
husband would kill my man here and take over my territory. Esmelda
smiled. She clasped her hands. An oversight, Im sure.
A profitable oversight, madam, Alfonse said.
Indeed, Esmelda responded. She looked at Vlad. There was a look
of contempt in her eyes, as if to say, Who the fuck are you letting in to
interfere with us now? Vlad shifted uncomfortably.
Its nice to meet one of our own kind, Vlad said to his wife. We
had not met any vampires of this time before.
No we had not, Esmelda answered, and her eyes seemed to say,
And why should we?
I must resolve this issue with you today, Alfonse said to Vlad and
Esmelda. Suddenly the woman turned on their visitor.
It is all very well to meet our ancestors, she snapped. But do not
think for a moment that some half evolved vampire is going to dictate
terms to me.
Oh? Alfonse asked, fingering his pistol.
If you wish to have orders, I will give them to you, Esmelda said.
Alfonse raised his gun. It was matched by Vlad, who brought up his
plasma rifle. Esmeldas eyes glowed and the visitors glowed, but
Esmeldas were clearly more powerful.
You should be destroyed, in my opinion, though it was nice to meet
you, Esmelda said. Alfonses gun shook in his hand. He was clearly trying
to hold onto it but his grip was loosening. The light in his eyes wavered.
You are expert in mesmerism, I see, he managed to get out, the
words tangling in his throat as if he were being choked as he tried to
speak them. Which he wasnt. Rather, it was his mind that was being
strangled, his willpower, Esmelda invading his brain and taking control of
it. Suddenly Alfonse lifted a hand and managed to tear his eyes away from
Esmeldas. As if shielding his eyes from the sun, he looked down and away
from her, shutting his eyes for good measure in the process. His gripped
his gun more firmly, but could no longer see where to aim it. Esmelda
prudently moved to the mans left. It would be a shame to put a hole in her
pretty black dress.
Yes, I am expert in mesmerism, Esmelda snapped. Look at me, you
dolt!
That would be imprudent, Alfonse said, the confidence once again
in his voice, but a trembling too, for he could feel Esmeldas eyes burning
into him and trying to grab hold of his will again. It was like being face to
face with Medusa, except he would not be turned to stone, only robbed of
himself.
You will do as I say, Esmelda told him.
Indeed, if I look at you, Alfonse agreed.
No! You will do as I say in any event, for I am Esmelda, Queen of the
vampires! the woman told him.
I have not heard of you before, Alfonse protested in a quivering
voice.
Thats because Im from five billion years in the future, Esmelda
said.
Then you are not born yet, Alfonse said, still hoping, through
words if not with his trembling gun, to make the woman go away.
How I got here is no concern of yours, Esmelda said. But if you
own a drug business I want it.
You have at least a quarter of it already! Alfonse cried.
The Queen of Darkness City will have all of it! Esmelda said,
growing red in her pale face now, to match her glowing eyes.
In the perpetually dark apartment, with the black curtains to block
out the light of day, with the flickering fire in the fireplace throwing a
gloomy half-light into the room, Alfonses gun slowly dropped to his lap.
HIs hand went with it, and his white fingers trembled as he held it against
his groin. He dared not look at the woman, but her very presence made him
know, now, that he was no match for her. Never mind that there was a
strange-looking multi-barreled rifle trained on him, in her husbands
hands. He was outmatched by these two unusual corpses. He couldnt
think of a way to talk himself out of the mess hed gotten into and if he
wasnt careful, he could find himself staked to the floor.
A- Alright, Alfonse said. Ill do ask you ask. Just dont make me
look at you. Esmelda looked at her husband.
A fine compliment for a lady, she said. The glow in her eyes
subsided. You may look at me now, she told Alfonse after a moment.
Look at me! she yelled, when he did not respond.
Yes, madam? Alfonse asked carefully. He lowered his hand. He
opened his eyes. He lifted his pistol a little and then, carefully, he stowed
it in his jacket. He turned his head and, fearfully, he allowed himself to
meet the face of Esmelda. The eyes. They were beautiful eyes. Dark, like
twin pools of night. They were not glowing now though, and he relaxed a
little. If he had been able to breathe he would have given a sigh of relief.
But he was dead, as his two hosts were. At least you are not hunters,
Alfonse said, offering a weak smile.
Nor you, Esmelda said. She sat down in an empty chair across
from the two men, on the other side of a low coffee table. We have two
humans upstairs, Esmelda said. They are young. Their blood is sweet.
Would you like some?
P- Perhaps later, Alfonse said, feeling quite exhausted now. This
was the closet call hed had with death, real death, since hed met a
hunter in Russia.
It will restore you. Clear your mind, Esmelda smiled.
If its not tainted, Alfonse said.
Oh? Esmelda asked. She seemed not to understand, genuinely, and
in a show of friendship he said,
It is not uncommon to offer a victim to someone that has tainted
blood. Its a way of controlling the mind. Vlad looked at his wife.
Lost knowledge, he said. Esmelda nodded.
We do not know of such things five billion years in the future,
Esmelda said. Perhaps you can teach me the technique.
It would be my pleasure, Alfonse said. A wraith vampire drifted
into the room, as if on the wind, but the air was perfectly still in the
house. Alfonse started. Whats that? he cried. Esmelda did not have to
turn.
Its a vampire, like ourselves. But a race that is perhaps closer to
death than we are, Esmelda said. Wraith vampires are easier to kill
than we are. Plasma rifles can kill them, unlike us, including yourself I
assume.
I do not like to discuss how I can be killed, Alfonse said.
We are immortal, of course, Esmelda told the man.
Really? Alfonse asked. His eyes widened. Vlad shifted slightly in
his chair.
Yes, Esmelda assured the visitor. The wraith vampire withdrew,
passing out again from the room.
It is an odd creature, Alfonse said, watching the wraith over
Esmeldas shoulder.
But useful, Esmelda assured the man.
That would explain the recent upsurge in deaths, then? Alfonse
asked.
Yes, Esmelda said. We must feed, of course, and the wraiths
also.
It is causing a stir, Alfonse said. Its how I found you. He
paused. How many of there are you here in Sun City?
More every day, Esmelda said. We are coming from the future.
Vlad leaned forward, his rifle put away now, taking a suddenly increased
interest in the conversation.
I have a machine, Vlad began.
Quiet! Esmelda snapped. Alfonse raised an eyebrow.
A machine? he asked, too sharp to fail to see the couples sudden
disagreement. Esmelda turned again to the visitor. She saw that he was
leaning forward, full of curiosity. She relented.
Its a time machine, Esmelda said. Its bringing vampires from
the future.
Wraith vampires at the moment but perhaps ones like ourselves as
well, Vlad said.
The wraiths are easier to control, Esmelda said. God forbid we
should start bringing in the rot from Darkness City, but I suppose well
have to.
         Your subjects, dear, Vlad said.
A time machine! Alfonse said, his eyes brightening with
understanding.
         Yes, Vlad said.
So you see, causing a stir, as you put it, is the least of our
concern, Esmelda told Alfonse. Were taking over this light-ridden
place.
         Good God! Alfonse cried.
You can help us, Vlad offered.
Help you? Alfonse said. Youre already breaching the
Masquerade!
Whats that? Vlad asked. Esmelda frowned.
Old knowledge, Esmelda snapped. She turned to her husband. Its
a theory that vampires must be submissive.
Hidden, Alfonse corrected. Seen but unseen. We must not disturb
the humans world. At least not in ways that they notice. Sucking the
blood out of a dozen teens and leaving fang marks in their necks, for
instance.
Sorry about that. The wraiths cannot conceal bite wounds as we
do, Vlad said. Theyre rather messier eaters.
I didnt conceal my own fang marks! Esmelda roared. Her eyes
began to glow again and she had to exert an effort to control it. Instead,
as Alfonse trembled before her, she roared, We have come to conquer this
fucking place! We care nothing for your humans!
But madam! Alfonse began. Esmelda rose.
This world is finished! Esmelda said. She pointed at Alfonse and
he drew back in his chair. He wanted to reach again for his gun but he
saw, with the woman standing over him now, that it would have been quite
useless. I am going to be the queen of this place.
We dont have queens here in America, or in France either. We have
presidents, Alfonse tried explaining.
Queen! Esmelda insisted. Queen of earth. And I am not going to
hide behind some foolish Masquerade, pretending to be a human. I am going
to conquer, in the name of Darkness. And I am going to rule! she said,
balling her finger which was pointing at Alfonse into a fist. Suddenly she
was not addressing the man any more, but the ceiling of the apartment.
Rule! she shouted. All the world will be mine and it will kneel to me,
just as it kneels to me in the future, except I want the whole thing now.
My sister is dead, she said, turning her glare on Alfonse again, her eyes
reddening now, and he unable to even think of going for his gun. There is
nothing to stop me now, she said. You. You will go out. Find the
hunters. Track them down. Lure them to you. Take the wraiths with you
if you need them, more are arriving every day. You will do my bidding and
you will not complain. Take what money you need, we are getting plenty
of it. Buy and bribe and do what you need to in the human world. That is
your domain. I leave it to you. I have no time to sport with these humans.
I am not lowering myself to the level of food.
Yes. Yes madam, Alfonse said. Then, recovering a little of
himself, he asked, Will there be a profit in it for me, madam?
Profit? Esmelda roared. It is a new world now. A world of
darkness in which I am ruler. I command you to go forth and take control,
in my name. Kill the hunters, or bring them to me alive that I may
question them. She turned, slightly, addressing the wall of her
apartment now. Start with the churches, she said. They must be
closed, and their priests brought under my control or killed. Favor places
of sin and get them to stay open longer, that the people may debauch
themselves with reverie and not know what is happening around them.
Liquor, drugs, these are our tools. I want the food sloshed and drunk, I
want them incoherent.
Y- Yes, madam. It is a very fine plan, Alfonse offered, awed now
by the power of the womans presence.
Do it! Esmelda said, turning on him again. Report back to me in
one week on your progress. Unleash the wraiths! she cried. Two wraiths
appeared in the doorway to her apartment. She addressed them. Stop
sleeping there in the next room. Vlad has given you his drug to protect you
from the daylight. Go forth! Feed and wreak havoc! Do not fear the
humans. They cannot hurt you, she assured them. We will take earth
today. We will wait no longer!
