                                        Andrew Roller Presents

                                                GIRL PATROL

                                              Chapter Eleven

Missy was wondering if Donald was ever going to kiss her when the
couple strolled up. They looked odd; they were dressed in eighteenth-
century wear. Donald, who had his arm around Missy, exhaled a pot-laden
breath and said,
God, you look great! And indeed, Missy thought, the guy was
fantastic, with glorious eyes that seemed to glow at her. And the woman
was breathtaking. Missy felt a touch of envy, knowing Donald must be
undressing her with his eyes. Then suddenly Missy felt the woman
undressing her with red eyes and the girl felt a bashful willingness, a
delight even.
Thank you. Compliments are always welcome, the female said.
You want to join us? Donald asked the elegant couple. The man
nodded, the woman holding his hand nodded too. They walked into the
circle of friends, five teenagers in all, and sat down among them. Taking
a walk? Donald asked the pair.
Yes, Vlad said. The woman seemed about to speak but Vlad looked
at her, smiled broadly, and she said nothing.
Were from the future, Vlad said. For a moment nobody said
anything, the fire crackling, and then a boy named Jaglee, which was
actually his nickname, said,
         Cool, man.
Want a hit? Donald said. He extended his joint toward Esmelda.
The woman waved it away.
         No thank you, Esmelda said.
Were actually rather thirsty, Vlad said. Donald and Missy looked
at Jaglee. Everyone did, in fact, and the boy, after hesitating a moment,
made to hand a half empty bottle of Smirnoff vodka to Esmelda.
         Not for that, Esmelda chuckled.
Its all weve got, Jaglee said.
         Actually it isnt, Vlad grinned.
Were going to drink your blood, Esmelda said. Her eyes remained
quite but Vlads glowed brighter. The group of teens shifted nervously but
there was something in the elegant mans gaze that kept them from
standing up or thinking of running away.
Why would you do a thing like that? Missy asked, feeling
surprisingly calm despite the womans odd statement.
It isnt important, Vlad said. Would you expect to explain to a
burger why youre going to eat it?
         No, Missy said.
Burgers cant talk, Jaglee said. He was still holding the bottle out
toward Esmelda. He had forgotten to withdraw his arm. Esmelda looked at
the young mans arm. It was muscular. He was the best looking of the
bunch and she thought she might like to have him. As a playmate. Vlad
was thinking the same thing about Missy. Wouldnt it be nice to have a
little human slave girl to do his bidding?
Youre right. Burgers cant talk, Vlad said to Jaglee. He grinned at
Esmelda. This ones bright.
         Yes, Esmelda said.
How did you get here? Donald asked. He had dropped his joint and
it was threatening to ignite the dry grass at his feet.
We walked, Vlad said. Esmelda laughed.
No, silly. He means how did we get here from the future.
Oh. By a time machine. Unfortunately I brought it in a little high
and it dropped to the ground and crashed. But its rebuilt now, Vlad said.
In fact its being used to commute.
         Commute? Donald asked.
Yes. Some of our friends came back through time. Then they went
forward again, then back again. Theyre testing the machine. Apparently
it still has some problems. It can travel forward five billion years, and
back again. But the other settings are inoperable.
I didnt know that, Esmelda said to Vlad.
Yeah, Vlad nodded. I dont think it would work at all except the
homing device must be feeding into the settings and jarring them into
working.
This is all too complicated, man, Jaglee said.
A burger wouldnt understand, Vlad replied.
So you do have a homing device on the machine, Esmelda said.
Whos it homing in on, me or you?
Well, I sprinkled some of my blood on it and then some of yours,
Vlad said. So hopefully its homing in on me, and probably you as well.
I dont want that fucking box landing on top of me, Esmelda said.
Its not a box, Vlad said. And its programmed to land near the
person, not on top of them.
I told you I dont like the idea of a homing device, Esmelda said.
If a hunter were ever to get that machine, it would deliver him right to
our doorstep. Vlad, who was still holding Esmeldas hand, squeezed it
reassuringly.
Dont worry. No hunter is going to get hold of my machine, Vlad
said.
No, only the fucking landlord, Esmelda said. She pulled her hand
free of Vlads.
That was an accident, Vlad said. Esmelda rose suddenly, her face
angry.
Thats why I dont want a homing device in the fucking thing!
Esmelda said.
Oh shit! Vampires! Donald said suddenly. The joint at his feet had
lit the grass. It was beginning to burn, lighting his foot. Missy screamed.
Vlad and Esmeldas eyes turned on the teens and they suddenly found
themselves flailing, like caught pigeons in a net, still aware that
vampires were in their presence but unable to flee. And then the shadows
moved in. There must have been at least twenty of them, and although
they seemed to be just shadows made by the trees standing around them
suddenly it was obvious that they werent, especially when the beesting
fangs sank into the teenagers necks.
Dinner time, Esmelda said to Vlad.
Yes, Vlad said. He watched as the wraith vampires drank the
teens blood. In the past or, rather, in the future, fire had always been a
useful tool for humans to protect themselves with. It wasnt the most
pleasant of things for a flesh and blood vampire to be around, and wraith
vampires could be kept at bay all night by it. But Vlads drug must be
having an effect on these vampires, Vlad realized, as he watched them
feast. Learning to live in the daylight, what reason did they have anymore
to fear fire? Sure, it could still kill them, as it could kill any vampire.
But kept at a safe distance, as the sun itself was, it was simply a source
of illumination, nothing more!
Save some for us, Esmelda called out to the vampires.
Whether or not they get my machine fixed theyll be able to use it
to flee the future, Vlad said.
Yes. We will reshape this world in our own image, Esmelda said.
Here in Sun City we will create a world of death.
