Chapter Two
We stood on a bluff overlooking a sea. Long, slow waves came
rolling in from the horizon to crash against obstinate black rocks.
Cumulous clouds floated placidly overhead. But I could see the anvil of a
thundercloud in the distance, out where the sea touched the sky.
Look! A black sand beach! I said to Katie.
Lets go swimming. My feet hurt from walking, Katie said.
Okay, I agreed. Good thing we brought our bikinis.
Yes. I think of everything, Katie told me. Want some of my
Doritos?
No, I said. Id eaten mine earlier, when wed stopped to pick
berries, on the edge of the forest. Wed had a picnic. Wed drunk some of
our sodas, and pissed out lemon-smelling pee in the bushes. We started
down a trail leading from the forest to the beach below.
When we finally arrived at the bottom, the cliffs of the shore rising
above us, we found a great surprise.
This isnt black sand, Katie said, bending down. Its black
licorice sand!
Wow, I said.
Best tasting sand Ive ever tasted! Katie informed me, putting a
handful of it in her mouth.
Yeah, it is good, I said. I picked up some and put it in my mouth
and chewed it. Black licorice, I said. I stopped chewing. Katie! I
warned. Remember what Boswell said. We should beware of licorice.
Especially if its black. Remember Licorice Lad?
Oh, yeah, Katie admitted. She dropped the rest of her handful.
Too bad. At least we can go swimming, though. Huh?
Okay, I said, dropping my grocery sack full of Lunchables and sodas
and fruit juice, and all the other things wed managed to bring, from
Bicycle playing cards to the Virginia Slims cigarette Katie had stolen
from her mom. Put your things here, next to mine, I told Katie. We can
watch our stuff from the water.
I dont think anyones around to steal it, Katie said, scanning the
cliffs above.
I know, I said. We havent met anyone, except that friendly bear.
I suppose we can just go ahead and change, huh?
I guess so, Katie said. She unzipped her jeans. Or we could swim
nude.
No, I said. Lets not. We should at least wear our bikinis. You
never know. Somebody could come by.
Okay, Katie said. She stripped out of her t-shirt and pants. I did
likewise. We tied each other into our bikinis. Her into her new pink
bikini, me into the red one shed loaned me.
See? It fits you, Katie said.
Yeah, I said. I tugged the rear of my red panties out of my ass. It
fit me, more or less. If I didnt mind having my ass cheeks hanging out.
And if I didnt mind a bra that let the undersides of my tits hang free. But
I didnt want to offend Katie, by suggesting I had bigger boobs than she
did. So I said nothing, simply pulling on the parts of the swimsuit, hoping
it didnt get wedged too far up in my ass or let my tits bounce out.
Lets go! Katie said. She grabbed my hand.
Alright. Ill race you! I said.
No. Lets go into the water together, Katie said. Im a little
scared of it. Weve never swam here before.
Oh, alright, I said. Come on, it looks fresh and cool.
We skipped down the beach. I felt happy. We touched our toes to the
water and found it as inviting as wed hoped. We waded in to our knees.
Then we went deeper still, up to my hips, and Katies navel.
Lets dive into the next wave, I told Katie.
Okay, she said, a little lacking in self-confidence.
Come on, theres nothing to be afraid of. The waters cool, and that
storm on the horizon is still far away.
I hope it doesnt rain. I dont want to get my hair wet, Katie said.
Come on! I said. I splashed her. She shrieked. When the next wave
came, I dove into it.
We played in the water. I practised diving like a dolphin, into each
wave as it came along. Katie went wading, and collected a handful of
shells among licorice rocks along the shore. She brought me the shells and
showed me her favorite ones, holding them high so the waves wouldnt
catch them.
Katie, I said, looking up in the sky, to check where the storm was,
that lay gathering out on the horizon. Katie, whats that black cloud,
hovering in over the cliffs?
Katie looked up. I dunno, she said.
The cloud grew larger and seemed to descend.
Duck down in the water, I said to her.
Why? Katie asked.
Im not sure. Just duck down, I said.
What about my sea shells? Katie asked.
Hold on to them tight, and duck, I said. I pushed on her shoulder.
Hard. I clapped my hand over her mouth so she couldnt scream as I pushed
her down. I felt her shells escape from her fingers as I plunged her down
in the sea.
The cloud dropped fast. It glinted gold in the setting sun.
Why did you? Katie, whose mouth was under the waters surface,
and mostly covered by my hand, asked.
Bats! I said to her. She gazed upward. Her eyes followed mine.
Yeeeck! Katie screamed, but it ended in a blubber, fortunately,
thanks to my hand and the water.
The bats came swirling and fluttering down to the beach. They
landed amidst our gear. They seemed to fight over it. And then, one by
one, they began to rise.
Our stuff! I gasped.
My toys! Katie managed to say, her mouth underwater.
We watched in horror as the golden, butterscotch bats flew high,
gripping our things in their claws. They flew higher and higher, until they
disappered into the clouds.
Slowly I rose from the water.
Katie, weve got to get out of here, I whispered. We could be in
Licorice Loch.
Yeah, Katie said. She nearly jumped in my arms. Im scaired!
she cried.
Hurry. Lets head for the beach, I told her.
We made it safely out of the water.
What will we do? All our Lunchables and everything is gone! Katie
said. We gazed at the spot where our things had been.
Well, I hope you like eating candy, I told her.
Not as much as I used to, Katie said.
Its still warm, I told her. I gazed at the horizon. But the sun is
setting. Remember what the bear said. The bats come out at night. Lets
run back up the path to the top of the cliff. We can hide in the forest until
morning. We can eat berries from the bushes if we get hungry. Come on! I
told her. I grabbed Katies hand. Together we ran as fast as we could back
up the path wed followed to the beach. I felt miserable. Our swim had
cost us our clothes. We had nothing left but our bikinis, now.
Its a good thing we didnt go skinny dipping! Katie puffed, running
beside me.
I know! Licorice Lad would really want to get his hands on us then!
I said.
