MEN NO LONGER NEEDED?

Women may no longer need men to get pregnant as sperm has been created from stem cells.

Researchers at Newcastle University used stem cells, capable of being grown into any cell type, harvested from mice embryos.

They developed the cells into sperm and used it to fertilise an egg and then implanted it into a mouse.

Seven mice were born, and six lived through into adulthood reports The Sun.

However, all the mice had health problems - including walking difficulties and being over or underweight.

Experts at Sheffield University had already showed stem cells could develop into sperm and eggs but it is the first time the technique has been used for the birth of a live animal.

Now that has been achieved by a team lead by Professor Karim Nayernia.

He said: "Eventually we could grow sperm in the lab and transplant them back into the patient."

Scientists praised the Newcastle team, but they warned more studies were needed before the technique could be used safely to help patients.
