A tale about Nazi concentration camp life. Beware: not for the
faint of heart.
Comments, as always, welcomed.
The Kreutzer Sonata
By JRSterling
(sterling.jason (at) gmail.com)
I start this diary with the hope that I will live to see the time when
I can share it with someone. Today is the first day of the New Year, 1943
and I have been assigned to assist Herr Doctor Franz Kreutzer in a project
here at Auschwitz under the direction of Joseph Mengele, the officer in
charge of our compound. I was a student studying medicine at the university
when I was arrested and charged with sodomy; wound up here wearing a pink
triangle and have only survived because of my education in medical matters
and knowing how to please certain guards when it comes to their sexual
needs.
Herr Kreutzer had been supervising a critical study of how the human
body reacted to being submerged in freezing water so that our Luftwaffe
pilots who were downed in the English Channel could survive long enough for
rescue and be returned to active duty. Many prisoners, mostly captured
Russian soldiers, were used as guinea pigs in this research. They would be
plunged into icy, salted water naked for varying lengths of time and their
vital statistics were recorded to see how long they could survive before
lapsing into a terminal condition from which they could not recover. Those
who survived the plunge were autopsied anyway so that valuable data could be
collected to better prepare our own pilots in the event of a crash at sea.
With the completion of this project, Dr. Mengele wanted to study the
effects of crucifixion on the human body. What this had to do with the war
effort was beyond my comprehension, but another project that required my
services only meant that I would be allowed to live a little longer and
escape the harsh treatment that so many of my fellow prisoners were
suffering daily. At least I had been allowed a food ration that kept me
from looking like the walking skeletons I saw, everyday, around me. I was
one of the fortunate few that had escaped the brutal routine of forced
labor, severe beatings and random acts of sadism practiced by the guards
here. I kept certain jailers satisfied having my mouth and rectum used for
their benefit. In return I was allowed to exist; something that was not
allowed the general population of Auschwitz. Happy New Year!
Since there are no holidays observed in this camp I was busy toiling
at setting up the workshop where the experiments would be conducted. Solid
posts with cross pieces were to be hinged to the floor of the shop and many
holes were drilled into the sides and front of the posts to test various
techniques of attaching the trial subjects to the wooden fixtures. Once
raised with their victims attached, these crosses had a dangling umbilical
cord above each that was used to connect all the bodily monitors they would
wear. Blood pressure, respiration, pulse and temperature were only some of
the many vital signs we were going to monitor while these test subjects were
inhaling their last agonizing breaths. I had been shown an outline of the
proposed test objectives and it was clear that hundreds, if not thousands of
men would be sacrificed during this study to meet all of the goals set forth
by Herr Doctor Mengele. Doctor Kreutzer was busy arranging for the storage
and supply of these many individuals who would wind up hanging by their
wrists so that scientific measurements could be extracted for some future
purpose of aiding the Third Reich in our march to conquer the world. I say
"our", because I am still a loyal supporter of our Fuhrer and his belief
that we are a superior race destined to rule the globe. Heil Hitler!
January 2, 1943: I am ordered to attend a meeting conducted by Dr.
Kruetzer in the workshop where we are assembled to be given instructions as
to how to proceed. Daily a truck with those selected for experimentation
will be backed up to our loading dock. They will already be naked and taken
one at a time to the initial examination station. Here they will be
examined and a file started with all the pertinent information needed. A
number will be branded on their foreheads for easy identification and
tracking both during their ordeal and for latter analysis post mortem. As
long as they file in one at a time, we will only need a maximum of three
armed guards to keep any threat of harm to ourselves at a minimum. Most of
these subjects have already conformed to our discipline routines and know
that to do anything but obey will mean certain death. Not knowing what is
in store for them most will not put up any resistance and will meekly do
what they are told.
Even though I am an inmate here I am allowed to wear a white coat over
my prisoner's uniform. This will help me get more cooperation from these
wretches as I give them the thorough physical that is required. When I tell
them to bend over and grab their ankles for my rectal examination procedure
they do so without question. Checking for abdominal hernias and the
standard, 'turn your head and cough' routine while I am holding their balls
and probing with my fingers almost never is disobeyed. This station is
positioned out of sight and hearing of the main room where the crucifying is
actually going on. We are set up for dealing with ten individuals at a time
and after I process the prisoner I lead him, along with his chart, into the
main room where he is positioned on his back upon the horizontal cross and
is first tied with ropes to the fixture. My job is then to attach all the
bio-medical devices to him and connect the wires to the hanging cord leading
to the recording instruments. Now the Doctor takes over personally and
fastens the subject's wrists to the crosspieces after very carefully feeling
for the right spot to insert the nails. Later, for comparison purposes, the
nails will go through the palms of some subjects to test all the possible
hanging methods.
On our first day of testing we had to install a mouth ball-gag on all
of our victims during the initial nailing procedures to cut down on the
noise of the screams coming from these people. It was disturbing to the
prisoners waiting in line for processing. But to not interfere with results
of all the tests, the gag was removed after the subject was upright and the
sounds turned to low moans and quiet pleadings for relief. I mentally named
the sounds of suffering around me as the Kreutzer Sonata as a jocular
reference to a work by Beethoven. Forgive my morbid sense of humor. It is
my only way to relieve the stress and guilt of doing what I have to do to
stay alive.
I noticed that Herr Franz seemed to enjoy this part of his work the
most, judging by the bulge in his tight fitting SS uniform pants that I
could occasionally see when his white coat was off to the side. I could
only fantasize about what went on in the bedroom of Frau Kreutzer's home
when the good Doctor arrived back after a hard day at the office. I had
only to look forward to servicing both Hans and Fritz who were generally the
guards on duty when my most pressing duties were completed. These two young
men only wanted quick relief for their urges and I became very familiar with
uncircumcised, proud, Aryan penises that needed my attention whenever they
called. It became a boring routine for me but these two thugs had life or
death control over me and I was not about to do anything that could
jeopardize my existence. These two also had no alternative but to be as
cruel as they could be to the prisoners, per camp directives, or to be sent
to the Russian front and almost certain death, or worse.
After we had filled all ten crosses and started collecting data on
their fate while hanging in various positions did I have time to reflect on
the sight of ten, naked souls going through unspeakable agony. The room was
filled with sounds that I thought could only come from Hell itself. The
sounds were not very loud owing to the fact that it was a struggle just to
stay breathing. When you are fighting to stay alive, under these
circumstances, one can't expend valuable energy shouting. I knew German,
French and English but as I was walking among these crosses many different
languages were pleading with me in incomprehensive words to end their
misery. But it was their duty to last as long as possible so that we could
collect as much information as we needed for the testing to mean anything.
Dr. Kreutzer had left for the day and I was to see to it that all the
measuring instruments were working and to take hourly notes on each man's
condition and status. Some of these men had been given little crotch pegs
to help in holding them up so that quick respiratory failure would not end
their life so soon. I understand that the correct term for this aide is a
sedile. I guess that the Greeks and Romans had a word for everything.
About six in the evening the first of our subjects expired and I had
him returned to a horizontal position so that it could be removed from the
fixture. The bodies, as they accumulated, would be autopsied by Dr.
Kreutzer the next day after he had reattached more bodies to the empty
crosses. That first night we lost four more people and I was ready to
examine five more replacements the next morning as the learned Doctor
arrived from home. What with my regular duties, servicing Hans and Fritz
and collecting data, I was destined to get very little sleep. I used a cot
in the examining station for some needed rest at night, but the sounds of
the main room were hard to ignore for the first week or so, until I got used
to it. At least I didn't have to do the clean up work that some of the
other inmates were assigned to do. All sorts of bodily excretions were
constantly soiling the floor around each cross. That kept two prisoners
busy almost all of the time. What bothered me most was that after the
victims were autopsied and stacked for removal in the 'meat wagons' to be
taken to the crematory the next morning a few of the prisoners removed some
of the internal organs for consumption back at their barracks that night.
Liver and spleen seemed to be the favorite objects along with brains,
testicles and kidneys. Very little muscle tissue wound up in the barracks
stew pots, probably because few of our subjects had much meat on them before
crucifixion. Hunger drives men to many extremes.
Every age, race, color and sex imaginable were sent to our
experimental facility. I remember a five-year-old male child that the
mother refused to turn back when it was her turn to board the truck arrived
at my station. I asked Dr. Kreutzer what to do with him and he responded
that it would be interesting to see how long the child would survive on the
cross. "Process him with the rest of these scum," was his answer. The good
Doctor made sure that the child was in full view of its mother, already
upright on her cross, when the kid was nailed in place. Mercifully the
child didn't last long in its agony; the young limbs were not strong enough
to support the body weight and it expired after only about one hour in
place. I noticed that the next morning when they were loading the 'meat
wagon' the small body had totally disappeared. With my own brand of
"gallows humor" all I could think about was the punch line to an old joke
that ended, "Dig deep in the pot, puppy on bottom."
April 20, 1943: It is our leaders 54th birthday and I finally have
some time to relax from my duties because, except for the guards everyone
has a day off to celebrate the event. There are only about four men who
survived during the night on their crosses and they are quiet and accepting
their fate as best as their agony will allow. As is my duty, I offer water
to those still alive so that they will last as long as possible. Even
though most of them know it is only prolonging their suffering they all
accept the water to quench the thirst caused by the slow, painful death. I
have been doing this research so long now that I am inured to the sights and
sounds of this hellhole. As I record my hourly notes on their condition I
am alone with them and stop before a beautiful, young male Serb that I
processed yesterday. His physique was so extraordinary that I presumed he
had not been in the camp long. There was still meat on his bones and a fire
in his eyes that meant he had not been broken yet by this place. I stood
before him and grasped his genitals and he looked down at me with defiance
on his face despite the hours of hanging there. He spoke broken German to
me and said, in effect, to go fuck myself. I fondled his sack and teased
his cock and before long he sprouted a boner that any man would be proud
of. Despite his situation and his pain he allowed me to bring him to the
edge of orgasm. Each time he was near exploding I stopped and dug my
fingernails into his glans to prevent any eruption. Time and time again I
brought him to the brink and each time spoiled his long awaited orgasm. I
wish I had a Serbian dictionary handy to find out what all the invective was
about. Soon he was crying in despair at the inability to have one last
release as a living male human being. His defiance suddenly turned to a
sorrowful pleading for one last act of mercy by me and to allow him to
climax. In very slow German I told him that if he were to honor our
leader's birthday, wholeheartedly, I would relent. He started quietly
singing the German national anthem as I stroked his 'schwanz' back to
hardness and then when he was about ready to shoot I engulfed his member
with my mouth and took him as far down my throat as it would go. He erupted
numerous times as I held him buried deep within me and he ended his few
seconds of pleasure by saying "Heil Hitler." What a birthday party!
June 15, 1943: I think I found out why we were studying the art of
crucifixion. I say art instead of science; art is a skill acquired by
experience, science is merely systematized knowledge of a subject. Hitler
was planning to have all the Russian leaders disposed of in this most
painful and humiliating manner after Stalin was defeated. It now looks like
we are not going to have the chance to carry out this dream. Word from the
eastern front is not too good. Our leader wanted to have the methods
perfected well enough to be carried out during his triumphal entry into
Moscow.
All the data is not fully analyzed yet but we have had several strong
individuals who lasted over thirty-six hours in constant agony. Providing a
short, sharp sedile for the test subjects between his or her legs not only
added discomfort to the experience but also prolonged the death by an
average of twenty-four hours. The learned Doctor also found that as long as
the subjects were fully hydrated blocking the urethra to prevent urinary
discharge added to the pain and discomfort of the individuals without early
death by uremic poisoning. Also nailing the feet so that there was at
least four inches of room for the legs to flex allowing the sufferer to lift
upwards prevented early respiratory failure. Most of the hundreds of
autopsies showed the cause of death to be asphyxiation. Second in order of
cause was cardiac arrest. We learned that the simple injection of several
drugs before or soon after crucifixion prevented most of the cardiac
failures.
Even though word was sent down from Dr. Mengele's office that our
project was to be ended soon Herr Kreutzer wanted to continue until our
experimentation until assigned another task. The trucks continued to bring
us fresh prisoners. The routine we had established for methodical record
keeping no longer applied; there was no need to keep track of each victim
and no need to acquire vital biological data anymore. The Doctor now had
liberty to try a wide range of pain giving methods. Along with hanging them
upside down by their feet to breaking their legs with a steel bar after they
had survived at least one day and see how long they lasted not being able to
push themselves up to get an occasional breath of air. The variations he
thought of seemed endless. I think he was getting bored with the
traditional forms of crucifixion and wanted to be stimulated by new ways of
causing the most painful deaths possible. Making the deaths last for days
was no longer interesting to him. We now had a situation where the recently
fastened prisoners were subject to other forms of torture while they hung on
the crosses. Castration and other forms of genital mutilation were now on
the agenda. Even some of the women who were sent us were not immune from
this torment. While they hung the Doctor practiced many different forms of
clitorectomy on them. Cutting, burning and crushing the clitoris along with
the inner labia were some of his favorite pastimes. When a sedile was used
he made sure to wrap barbed wire around it to see if that prevented the
prisoners from trying to rest their muscles that had gone into spasm and
were crying out for relief.
August 23, 1943: My two guardian angles, Hans and Fritz were
transferred to the eastern front and I now have nobody to protect me and
give me extra rations of food. No medical work that I am qualified for is
available. I have been assigned to the morgue near the gas chambers and
must toil sixteen hours a day removing gold fillings and hair from the
corpses before they are sent to the crematory. They stack up faster than we
can process them. I am always hungry now and even when I get to go back to
the barracks for rest the capos running our hut demand that I service them
and their special friends because I wear the pink emblem of shame. I don't
think I can continue this diary anymore. At least I have been of some
service to medical knowledge by my participation in the last project of Dr.
Kreutzer. Heil Hitler!
