                             AUTHOR'S NOTE

This novel was first published in August, and has remained one of
the most popular and most requested works I have written. From the
vast amount of feedback I have gotten over it, I have been able to make
some revisions and corrections that warranted a repost. This is still
the same story, mind you--what I have changed were a number of factual
and grammatical errors pointed out to me by my readers. In particular,
I want to thank Neverless and Lee Vine for assistance in that regard.

With eight or nine months of hindsight (I wrote the first draft
of OCB in March), I have to say that I am not entirely happy with this
thing. Among other problems, I think it starts too quickly and the
behavior and personality of some of the characters in Part One are
inconsistent with what occurs later. None of this appears to have
dimmed the enthusiasm that has greeted the story, but it bears pointing
out.

If you haven't read this before, a few words of warning. This
novel (and it *is* a novel--it runs to over 98,000 words) should not be
taken too seriously. It is best described as a silly, sappy, high
school soap opera. The protagonist has more good fortune and more wild
experiences in one year than most people have in their entire lives. I
don't just mean the sex, either. Although there is plenty of sex in
this story, there are also long stretches of action where nothing
remotely sexual occurs. This is because the story is supposed to be a
full depiction of the protagonist's life, not simply a catalog of his
sexual behavior. As in the real world, sexual activity has certain
consequences, and that is what I have tried to accurately describe.

The reader will note fairly quickly that this story appears to
fall into one of the worst stereotypes of low-grade erotica: the
football player and the cheerleaders. To this appearance, I freely
confess--but there is a great deal else going on in here.
Nevertheless, should you have a congenital allergy to football, you may
want to skip this, as there is plenty of explicit sports to go with the
explicit sex.

Those of you familiar with Orange County, California, will note
that I have taken certain liberties in my descriptions, particularly
with the locations and athletic programs of area high schools. I did
this solely out of laziness--I wasn't interested in researching the
actual composition of the local high school football conferences.

This work is, in many ways, a satire. The views expressed herein
should not be taken as serious commentary on either the County of
Orange, the Roman Catholic Church, or the United States Marine Corps.
I make one exception to that disclaimer, however. My descriptions of
the Orange County foster care system do not in any way resemble
reality. The actual system is currently in very dire straits, and few,
if any, children who go through it have experiences as easy and
pleasant as the protagonist's. Sexual abuse of foster children is
unfortunately not uncommon, and in real life, the consequences are far
different from what I have described here.

One last note: Please do NOT e-mail me for missing pieces. This
is a very large file and mailing it is a pain. All the pieces of this
story should be available in the ASSM archive, the address for which
can be found in the header above.

                                    XIV.

From then on, things settled into a general routine. Jack went out with
Summer on the weekends, and played the boyfriend at school. Despite his
promise to Becky, he had difficulty thinking about anything else when he
was around Summer. He met her parents, who liked him and were impressed
with his ambition to be a Marine pilot. Billy began dating someone else
(the same girl who had gone to console him after the fight at the party),
and the tension between him and Jack subsided somewhat, although he didn't
think they would ever be friends again. Summer's manipulative side
disappeared after that, and, outwardly at least, she was almost too sweet
and sincere to be for real. He knew better. Her lust for him--nor his for
her--did not ebb, and she had a habit of surprising him and insisting on
encounters in dangerous places. That was what he thought she got out of
their relationship: an opportunity to be the "bad girl" she couldn't be
otherwise. When they were alone, the sweetness vanished, and she turned
into a sharp-tongued slattern. He and Summer gradually became the "cute
couple" of the school. Summer's status alone would have pushed it in that
direction, but his prominence on the football team all but assured it.

Sunday afternoons he met Kisu at the library to study, then went back to
her house to work through her mother's "pillow book." She never seemed
interested in being more than friends, even though their sex became
increasingly bizarre. As he learned more with her, he applied the
techniques with the other girls, to their delight. Mondays became a coveted
spot, with the other three trying to be first in line for what he had
learned that weekend.

Yet despite his passion for Summer, Jack felt the closest to Becky. The two
of them often spent afternoons together in her room or in the loft above
her garage, or studied together at school, and spent more time talking than
fooling around. When they did have sex, it tended to be pretty tame, and of
all the six girls, he felt the least guilty about sleeping with her.

His relationship with Karen was beyond his ability to fathom. They weren't
quite friends, and there were times he bitterly resented her. They fought
often enough that Marcia became concerned about it, asking Karen to be more
"understanding" about Jack's predicament. As Karen had promised, she
essentially stopped wearing underwear, sometimes not even a bra, so often
that Marcia began complaining about Karen not putting all of her dirty
clothes in the hamper. After that, she wadded up clean panties and tossed
them in with the rest of her stuff. Karen knew that her butt was Jack's
weakness, and she contrived to discreetly rub it against him or expose it
to him as often as possible. Without panties, it was easily done. Yet,
notwithstanding the hostility between them, he probably had more sex with
her than any of the others. Sometimes their encounters became so violent
they were like a pair of rabid weasels.

Only occasionally--mainly on Sunday mornings before and during Mass--did
Jack accept the idea that he had sunk into a state of deep denial. He was
committing a serious sin, and the longer it went on, the less he could
rationalize it by believing that God knew what he was doing, no matter what
he told Father Roberts in Confession. God indeed knew what was going on,
and Jack suspected He wasn't too happy about it. Jack wasn't lying in
Confession to protect someone else. He was doing it to save his own butt,
and protect his possible appointment to the Naval Academy.

He began the application process in September, and everything indicated
that he was on the inside track. He got glowing recommendations from his
teachers, Marine officer friends of his father's, the football coach, and
even from Father Roberts. One Friday afternoon, he got a phone call from an
aide to their Congressman, who asked Jack to come in that Saturday to meet
with the Representative about his appointment. The meeting went about as
well as Jack could have expected. His personal story--wanting to follow in
his deceased father's footsteps to become a Marine officer--was what seemed
to get everyone's attention. His father's former squadron commander in
Norfolk--with whom Jack had been somewhat friendly--gave him probably the
best recommendation of all:

"When Richard O'Leary died, I lost both a close friend and one of the
finest officers I have ever had the privilege of serving with. My one
consolation in grieving for him was the knowledge that his son would one
day take his place as a Marine Corps officer. Jack is one of the finest
young men I have ever known. I can hardly imagine anyone else I would
prefer to have as a junior officer serving in my command."

After that, his appointment looked like a near certainty, though Jack was
feeling more and more as if he didn't deserve it.

With no other outlet, Jack took out his frustrations on the football field.
He quickly became one of the star players, roaming through the backfield
like an angry bear. He scored two more touchdowns before Homecoming, one on
another fumble, the other on an interception return. He led the team in
tackles and was second in the conference. More than once, he sent opposing
players off the field with injuries, getting penalized for it twice. The
coach asked him to tone the energy down a notch, but was clearly pleased.
Going into Homecoming, the team was 7-0 and tied for first place in the
conference. Their offense had occasional trouble getting into the end zone,
but their defense, centered around Jack, was first-rate. Two of their
victories had been shutouts, and the thirteen points they gave up in the
first game were the most they had given up all season. The 'Orange County
Register' even did a short piece on them in the prep section of the sports
page, mentioning Jack several times.

A few days before the game, the coach told Jack he'd gotten a call from one
of the assistant coaches at the Academy, who was sending someone out to
watch Jack play that weekend. Summer and Becky were both thrilled, though
Karen chose to make a snide remark about his football career being her
idea.

That Thursday, he was walking to class when Summer came up behind him,
slipping her arm through his.

"Hi."

"Hi."

"Are you ready for this weekend?"

"The game should be good."

"Not just the game. The dance and everything."

"Don't worry. I have difficulty seeing you not getting elected Homecoming
Queen."

"Well, we'll see. I was thinking more about you. Wouldn't it be so cool if
we both got elected? It's probably you or Billy, and the last thing I want
is to have to dance with him again."

"I'm a long shot. You know that."

"No, really. We've been sort of taking a poll. It's probably fifty-fifty."

Summer and her friends, including the other cheerleaders, had been putting
up posters around campus campaigning for both of them. Jack hadn't asked
for it but wasn't surprised.

"I'm more concerned about the game. You know who's going to be there."

"I know. I know you'll do great and get a big scholarship."

"The Academy doesn't give scholarships. If you get in, it's free. You pay
them back by serving afterward. This could just help my application."

"Oh. Well, I know you'll do great. Look--"

"What?"

"Can you do me a favor? It would mean a lot to me."

"What?"

"Can you stop being so chummy with Becky, at least at school? People are
starting to talk."

He stopped dead and closed his eyes.

"Don't put me in this position. This arrangement was your idea, yours and
the others. Not mine."

"It's just that Cordelia White came up to me this morning and said 'I saw
Jack and Becky Smith walking home together yesterday.' She's convinced
something is up."

"Becky and I have become good friends. If I start blowing her off, she's
going to get very hurt."

"I'm not asking you to blow her off, just act more like you're really my
boyfriend."

He pulled his arm away from her.

"This is not my problem. You two work it out."

He walked away, not looking at her.

He didn't see either of them the rest of the day. He found Becky waiting
for him after football practice, a sour look on her face. She joined him
for the walk home.

"I knew this would happen eventually," she said.

"I'm sorry. I'm not sure what to do."

"You don't have to do anything. This is between me and Summer."

"You guys have to work this out. Forget that I care about you two a lot,
this is the worst possible time for me to have this blow up on us."

"I know. I'd never do anything to hurt you."

She sighed.

"Summer and I used to be better friends. In tenth grade, I slept over at
her house a lot. We still got along great until this started. I thought of
her and Karen as my best friends. And you know, I can't tell whether she's
jealous or just worried about her status as Queen of Sacred Heart. I mean,
it doesn't look too good for her boyfriend to be cheating on her."

She stopped, hanging her head.

"God. You don't know how weird it was to say that. I've been thinking of
you as my boyfriend."

They were several blocks away from the school now, and no one was in sight.
He hugged her.

"I'll do whatever I can. Although I don't know what the hell to do."

She didn't say anything right away. Then she linked her arms around his
waist, returning the hug.

"I love you."

He looked down at her. She had her head on his chest.

"I'm sorry, but I do. I think about you all the time. I write your name in
my notebooks. I've never been able to talk to a guy like I talk to you. If
you ditch me for Summer, I'll just die."

He ran his fingers through her hair.

"I love you, too. I'm not going to ditch you. Summer will just have to deal
with this."

She hugged him harder.

"Thanks."

He took her back to her house and made love to her. She seemed a little
happier afterward. Then he went home.

He found Karen waiting for him upstairs.

"So Summer and Becky are having it out?"

"Summer wants me to stop being friends with Becky. Or something like that.
I'm not sure what it's about, though. Jealousy or just insecurity."

"Don't worry. I'm going to lay down the law with them tonight. They're not
going to fuck this up now. I was talking to Corinne about it. She thinks
they're being so immature."

Karen slipped into his bed that night, as she did most nights. After some
bruising, athletic sex, she told him what she had done.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

"Summer is wigging out over this. It may be because of the Homecoming Queen
thing. Maybe she's worried about losing votes. She's having a fit over the
gossip, not that there's that much. She thinks people care more than they
do."

"What about Becky?"

"In between crying her eyes out, she threatened to blow this open if we
made her stop hanging out with you. I don't know what the fuck we're
supposed to do. They're being idiots."

He sat up, glaring at her.

"You have to fix this. I cannot have this blow up now."

"You're telling me? What do you think Mom would do? I'd be grounded until I
was thirty, never mind that I'd never get to see you again. I'll figure
something out."

That last remark confused him a little, but too much else was racing around
his brain to allow him to analyze it. She went back to her room a minute
later, and he lay in bed for a long time staring at the ceiling.

For most of Friday, he managed to avoid them. Becky gave him a sad "hi,"
during class, but otherwise stayed away. Summer was nowhere to be seen. He
went to the locker room after school and sat there alone until close to
game time, sitting in a corner with his knees up to his chest.

He had known in the back of his mind that this was going to happen. It
wasn't natural for two girls, let alone six, to be willing to share one guy
they way they had been doing. Never mind what Becky had said about other
polygamous cultures; this wasn't Africa or Arabia. As much as they tried to
be "cool" or "hip" about it, their emotions had caught up with them. Jack
figured he deserved to have it blow up now, right in the middle of his
application process, right before he was about to play football in front of
a scout from the Academy.

He wondered what was going to happen. If the full story came out, he might
well be expelled. This was a Catholic school, and they didn't have to put
up with things that a public school might ignore. At the very least, it
would be a huge scandal. Child Services would most likely remove him from
the Lynch household--there was little doubt in his mind that Marcia would
insist on it--and there was no telling where he would end up then. No one
would believe he had been forced into this. Five angry fathers (Karen being
the only girl without one) would probably be coming after him with
shotguns.

His application to the Academy was history. Clearly, he hadn't demonstrated
the requisite moral fiber for a commission. The scandal probably wouldn't
affect his applications elsewhere, particularly given his performance in
football, but Jack had no interest in going anywhere else but Annapolis.

Yet above even his despair over the Academy, he was torn over what would
happen to the girls. He knew he was in love with both Becky and Summer,
however that was possible, but he stood a good chance of losing both of
them. He could live without Kisu, though he would miss her, and getting
Karen out of his life would be an improvement (wouldn't it?). Corinne and
Michelle were just acquaintances, really. Losing Becky or Summer, let alone
both, would hurt. A lot.

Tonight might well be his last game at Sacred Heart, possibly anywhere. He
figured he might as well give it everything he had.

  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                    XV.

The other players began showing up just before six. Jack rose from his
corner and suited up with them lest he draw attention. The coach led them
out for warm-ups, and he saw the cheerleaders on the sidelines stretching.
Predictably, they looked less than enthusiastic, and Becky and Summer were
obviously avoiding each other. The team went back into the locker room for
the coach's pre-game pep-talk, which Jack had difficulty concentrating on.

Then it was game time. Jack followed the other players out onto the field,
rushing through the big paper banner the spirit squad had made. The
opposing team got the ball first, and Jack went out on the field with the
rest of the defense.

Jack had worked himself up into such a frenzy that he scarcely paid
attention to Randy's play-calling in the defensive huddle. Their opponents
tonight were primarily a passing team, and the coach had warned them to
expect a lot of blitzes. Sure enough, that was the first call.

As soon as the ball was snapped, Jack raced up into the line, crashing
between Randy and one of the opposing guards. He had expected to be
double-teamed--it wasn't uncommon as his reputation preceded him this far
into the season--but he squirted through into the opposing backfield
anyway. The fullback was there to block him, but Jack angrily shoved him
out of the way. Their quarterback saw him coming and broke out of his
passing stance to scramble away. Jack followed, angling himself toward the
sideline to prevent his quarry from getting around the outside. Realizing
he was about to be sacked, the quarterback tried to throw the ball away.

Jack had expected this, and leaped up to block the pass. He got his left
hand on it, and batted it back toward the quarterback. With a look of
horror on his face, the quarterback tried to get the ball back, but his
throw had left him off balance. Jack plucked the ball out of the air and
raced untouched into the end zone thirty yards away.

The rest of the first half went about the same way. Figuring he had nothing
to lose, Jack threw himself into the game. By the end of the second
quarter, he had ten tackles, three sacks, another batted pass, and one
penalty for unnecessary roughness. Sacred Heart was up 21-0, and the other
team hadn't gotten past midfield.

Jack occasionally glanced over at the cheerleaders, seeing that nothing
seemed to have changed. Becky and Summer were continually at opposite ends
of the cheers, and the squad as a whole seemed out of synch. He went into
the locker room for halftime feeling like the sky was about to fall.

The coach had little substantive to tell them.

"They're probably working on ways to stop our blitzing, so we may need to
get a little more creative. Beyond that, keep up the good work."

When the third quarter started, Sacred Heart's offense took the ball and
worked straight up the field, scoring on a one-yard dive by Billy Mason.
Jack was also on the kickoff team, though he hadn't had a tackle yet
tonight. This time, the kick was somewhat short, and when the opposing
player grabbed the ball, Jack got past the blockers and hit him hard from
the side. He slammed his shoulder into the arm the guy was using to hold
the ball, and when Jack hit him, the ball popped loose. Sacred Heart
recovered on the other team's thirty-five yard line, and two minutes later,
they were up 35-0.

After that, the coach began putting in the substitutes, though he kept Jack
in, knowing the Academy scout was in the stands. When the third quarter
ended, Jack checked out the cheerleaders again. To his surprise, he saw
Summer and Becky sitting together on a bench talking. Neither of them
looked particularly happy, but something was clearly up. He wondered if
maybe they were going to work this out after all.

Still concerned, Jack's intensity did not ebb. With the second- string
players in, their opponents finally showed some signs of life. They put
together their first sustained drive of the night, but it ended on Sacred
Heart's thirty-yard line after Jack sacked their quarterback on two
successive plays. They missed the ensuing field goal, and the game ended a
few minutes later with the score still 35-0.

Sacred Heart's players and students swarmed onto the field to celebrate.
Jack tried to work his way to the sidelines to see what Summer and Becky
were up to, but the coach intercepted him. With him was a tall, fit guy in
his thirties with a close crew cut.

"Jack, this is Stan Marshall. He's the scout from the Naval Academy."

All thoughts of the girls flew out of his head. Jack shook the man's hand.

"Nice to meet you, sir."

"That was quite a game you had tonight, Jack."

"Thank you, sir."

"From what I've been hearing, you're in good shape with the application
process. We're really looking forward to having you try out for the team. I
think I can tell Coach Weatherbie to put in a good word for you."

Jack swelled with emotion. Maybe this might actually work.

"Thank you, sir. I want to make the Academy like nothing you can imagine."

He laughed.

"Oh, I can imagine it, Jack. I was in your shoes a few years back."

"Are you an officer, sir?"

"I was. Annapolis '85. I played middle and outside linebacker just like
you. After I graduated I was on the Vinson, then the Roosevelt. When I got
out, I came back to the Academy to coach. I hear you're looking to go into
the Corps, though."

"Yes, sir. My father was a Marine pilot."

"So I heard."

He spent about fifteen minutes chitchatting with Jack before letting him go
and wishing him luck. Jack looked around for Summer and Becky, but they had
disappeared along with the rest of the cheerleaders.

He returned the locker room wondering what to do. The dance was the next
night, and he was supposed to take Summer. Now, he wasn't sure what was
going on.

When he got dressed, he found Karen waiting for him outside the locker
room. She was leaning against the opposite wall, arms crossed and head
down. She looked up at him but didn't raise her head.

"What happened?"

"I don't know. Summer and Becky were talking toward the end of the game,
but I'm not sure this is over. Neither of them would talk to me. Summer
just said, 'We're working on it.'"

"Damn it. What about tomorrow night?"

"You got me. Why don't you call them?"

"I don't want to get into the middle of this."

"Well, duh, you are in the middle of this."

"I mean I don't want them to make me choose. That won't solve anything."

"God. They're being such selfish bitches. I can't believe this."

They drove home in Marcia's car. Uncharacteristically after a big game,
Karen went to bed with Kelly and didn't come looking for any attention
after the lights were out.

The next morning, Marcia came out to him while he was working in the yard.

"You and Summer are having some problems?"

"Sort of." He wondered how much he could tell her. He need to vent about
this somehow.

"Anything you want to talk about? Maybe I can help."

He sighed.

"I've gotten to be good friends with Becky. I'm not sure Summer likes it."

"You think she's jealous?"

"People are gossiping about it."

"People are always going to gossip. You can't let that keep you from doing
what's right. Only people with small minds and limited morals gossip."

"Okay."

"And you have to assure Summer that you care about her and that she doesn't
have anything to worry about. She shouldn't get jealous of Becky if you
don't let her get insecure."

"I know."

"Jealousy is a sign of insecurity. That's what you have to address yourself
to. Girls her age tend to be pretty insecure, especially about dating. At
seventeen, you're close to being an adult, and that can be scary. You're
dealing with a lot of feelings you're not familiar with, and that you maybe
have trouble controlling. Do you care about Summer?"

"I love her."

She smiled.

"That's a big word. Are you sure? I still remember what it was like at your
age."

"I do."

"Then you should tell her that. If she believes you, she shouldn't get
upset about your friendship with Becky."

"Okay."

"Here. Give me a hug."

He did.

"I'm so happy about how things are turning out for you, Jack. You deserve
the best. Now go call Summer and straighten this out so you have a date for
the dance."

He couldn't work up the guts to call her until after lunch. When he did,
she wasn't there.

"I'm sorry, Jack," her mother said. "She's out getting her hair done. I'll
have her call you when she gets home."

"Thank you, ma'am."

Jack hung up the phone and thought. If she was getting her hair done, she
was clearly planning on going to the dance. That didn't tell him anything
about what was happening with Becky, though.

He thought about calling Becky, but wondered if it was appropriate. He had
only met her parents a couple of times. He ruminated about it for ten
minutes before making the call.

A woman answered. It sounded like Becky's mother.

"Hello?"

"Um, hi, is Becky there?"

"No, I'm sorry, she's not. Can I take a message?"

"Can you tell her that Jack called?"

"All right."

"Thank you."

He sat around the rest of the afternoon, but the phone never rang. Karen
began getting ready around six. The original plan was for Jack to walk over
to Summer's, pick her up, then drive back and get Karen. Now he wasn't sure
what was going on.

The phone rang at six-fifteen, but Karen got it before he did. About ten
minutes later, she yelled out to him.

"Jack! It's Summer."

"It is?"

He stuck his head into her room. She was grinning, holding the phone to her
chest.

"Yes. Get it downstairs."

He went down and picked up the receiver.

"Hello."

"Hi. Are you ready?"

"I don't know. You tell me."

"Just come and get me. I have a surprise for you."

"What?"

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you."

"What about this thing with Becky?"

"Don't worry about it. Just come and get me. You'll see."

"No. What the hell is going on?"

"Sheesh. Just relax. I'll explain when you get here."

He fumed for a moment.

"Do you mean this is resolved?"

"You'll see. Just have some patience, God. I'll see you at seven, okay?"

He growled. Clearly he had no choice here.

"Okay."

He got cleaned up and dressed. Karen stayed in her room, avoiding him.

"Is everything okay?" Marcia asked.

"I'm not sure. But I'm going to get her anyway."

"Okay. Remember what I said."

He walked over to Summer's house, wondering what the hell was going on.
When he rang the bell, her father answered and let him in.

"It will be just a moment, Jack. Come on in."

Jack stood uncomfortably in the foyer, but her father motioned for him to
sit down in the living room.

"I hear you had quite a night last night."

"Yes, sir."

"Summer told me there was a scout from the Academy there. That's quite
impressive."

"Yes, sir. I talked to him after the game."

"So things are looking good for your appointment?"

"I think so, sir."

"Great. Summer has been making noises about going to school back there
herself, if you didn't know that."

"Yes, sir, I did."

"I'm not so wild about having her so far away, but I guess you have to
learn to let go."

Jack nodded, not sure what to say. Then Summer appeared on the stairway.

The theme for the dance was Island Night, and Summer was wearing a bikini
top and a long floral print dress. Her hair was up behind her head, but
fell down in a cascade of curls. An orchid was behind one ear. He swallowed
awkwardly. She was gorgeous.

Summer's mother was coming down behind her. Jack stood up and went to meet
her.

"Hi."

Summer leaned in to kiss him on the cheek, taking his arm.

"Hi."

"You don't need a jacket, honey?" her mother asked.

"I'll be fine, Mom."

"All right, have fun, kids. Back by one, remember."

"Yes, Mom."

Summer led him out of the house to her car. He stopped, pulling his arm
away from her.

"Okay. What is going on?"

She sighed.

"Get in and I'll tell you. Everything is fine."

He looked at the ground a moment and then got into the car. She turned
around in her seat, leaning back against the door.

"We're not going to get Karen. We're going to get Becky."

He stared at her.

"We are?"

"Yes. We had a long talk last night and realized we were being stupid.
We've been best friends for too long to let this thing with you get in the
way of it. You're taking both of us to the dance, and if Cordelia White and
her bitchy friends don't like it, they can go fuck themselves."

He sat back in his seat, exhaling. She took his hand, rubbing it.

"So everything is okay and no one is getting in trouble."

He looked over at her, feeling his throat thickening.

"I love you."

She gasped, swallowing hard. She squeezed his hand tightly.

"I love you, too."

She bit her lip, then leaned forward, hugging him.

"But I also love Becky," he said.

"I know. So do I. It's okay. Everything is just wonderful."

She pulled back, kissing him repeatedly. Then she withdrew, wiping her
eyes.

"Oh, God, I'm going to ruin my makeup."

She laughed.

"What about Karen?"

"She's taking your mom's car. It's fine. She knows."

She took his hand again, holding it tightly. He pulled out of the driveway
and headed over to Becky's.

Summer sniffed.

"That's the first time anyone has ever said that to me. Other than my
folks, I mean."

"I meant it."

She squeezed his hand again.

"I know."

She wiped at her eyes again, and pulled down the mirror on the sunshade.
She laughed softly.

"You're making me cry. I'm going to have to fix myself when we get there."

"Sorry."

They pulled up at Becky's a minute or two later. Her mother answered the
door.

"Hi, Summer. You must be Jack. Was that you on the phone this afternoon?"

"Yes, ma'am."

Becky emerged from the living room. She was dressed similarly to Summer,
although her top and dress were patterned differently. Her hair was styled
the same, though the flower behind her ear was some kind of lily. Becky's
mother gave her a peck on the cheek as she left.

"Bye, Mom."

"Bye, honey, have fun."

Becky climbed in the back seat, leaning forward between them.

"Sorry about all this," she said. "Summer and I worked it out, as I guess
she told you."

Jack took a deep breath.

"Look. I love you both, for different reasons and in different ways,
because you're different people. You aren't going to have the same kind of
relationship with me."

"I know," Summer said.

"It's okay," Becky said, "we talked about all that."

"Yesterday, when I thought I was losing you, that hurt more than the
prospect of losing the Academy. I can't have you two doing this to me if
we're going to stay together."

Summer reached over, putting her fingers on his mouth.

"Shh. Relax. We figured out a way to make this work. What I'm going to tell
everyone is that I trust you, I trust Becky, you're both my friends and I
don't care what you do together. The story is that we decided to take Becky
to the dance to thumb our noses at everyone who's been gossiping, to show
them we don't care what they think. That I don't care if you're close
friends with another girl."

"It's the sort of thing people would expect from Summer. You know, doing
the sweet thing instead of getting all bitchy."

"They just don't know me very well. But my mom was so impressed with my
'maturity' about it that she hardly knew what to say."

Jack took Summer's hand, then Becky's.

"Okay. Let's go."

  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                    XVI.

The three of them raised some eyebrows when they walked into the gym, but
the whispering and pointing were over sooner than he expected. They voted
for King and Queen of Homecoming at a table by the entrance. Jack felt a
little guilty voting for himself, so he voted for Summer and Billy. He had
no doubt who the girls voted for.

Jack danced with both of them for a while, then went to hang out with the
football team for a bit. He got some ribbing from the other players, but
professed innocence, giving them Summer's proposed explanations.

Randy pulled him aside a few minutes later.

"You having any better luck than Billy?"

"If I were, I wouldn't go telling you."

Randy laughed.

"Oh, man, come on."

Jack just shook his head, and Randy laughed again.

"I can tell something's up, man. Summer didn't fall for Billy the way she
has for you. She tended to treat him like shit sometimes, leading him
around like a dog on a leash, you know? He was completely whipped. That's
why he went nuts when you took her away from him. But she lets you bring
Becky Smith to the Homecoming Dance and laughs about it."

"I told you what that was about."

"Yeah, maybe she told you that, but maybe something else is up, you know?"

"What do you mean?"

Randy pulled him further over to the gym wall, lowering his voice.

"Some people are starting to say that Corinne Harris and Michelle Swanson
have got something going. Like they might be dykes. They're always hanging
out with each other, and they never go out on dates with guys. They even
came together tonight."

"So? They're good friends, that doesn't mean they're lesbians. And what
does that have to do with Summer?"

"They're all on the cheerleading squad, right? Maybe Summer knows something
she's not telling you. Who knows, maybe the whole squad is getting it on."

Jack forced a laugh, hoping Randy couldn't tell.

"Get your mind out of the gutter."

Randy laughed.

"No harm in fantasizing, my man. Wouldn't you like to be the meat in a
Becky Smith-Summer Carlson sandwich?"

"Jesus."

Randy laughed, thumping him on the back, and Jack went back over to Summer
and Becky, who were yakking with a bunch of their friends.

"What were you whispering about with Randy?" Becky asked.

"I'll tell you later."

She poked him in the stomach.

"Tell me now."

"Randy was just being perverted. I'll tell you later."

"Something about me and Summer?"

"Sort of, but not all of it."

"God. He's such a loser."

About half an hour later, the president of their class, Rachel Callahan,
got up on the stage and interrupted the music. She took the microphone from
the DJ and walked up to the front.

"Okay, everybody, it's time to announce the King and Queen of Homecoming."

The crowd murmured and cheered, moving up toward the stage. Summer took his
arm, squeezing it tightly. Down at his side, out of sight of anyone else,
he felt Becky's hand slipping into his. He gave it a gentle squeeze.

Rachel took an envelope from one of the other members of the Homecoming
Committee, who had come up on the stage with her.

"Okay, the King and Queen of Homecoming are . . ."

She opened the envelope and smiled.

"Big surprise--Summer Carlson and Jack O'Leary."

Summer squealed so loudly that Jack's ears hurt, and she jumped up against
him, hugging him tightly. She let him go a few seconds later, and hugged
Becky. Then Becky hugged him, and Summer hugged a few other people. Summer
took his hand and led him up to the stage. Rachel put tacky plastic crowns
on their heads, and applauded along with most--though not all--of the other
guests. Jack did notice, with some surprise, that Billy was applauding
along with the rest of the team.

Summer took the microphone.

"Um, thank you so much. This means a lot to me. I know that sounds stupid,
but oh well."

Everyone laughed.

"And, um, I'm really happy you picked Jack, because I don't want to have to
dance with anyone else."

A lot of the girls in the class went, "awww," after which most of the guys
laughed. She handed the microphone to Jack, who was more embarrassed than
he wanted to admit.

"Um, what she said." More laughter. "Thanks."

Summer led him back down to the gym floor, where they danced slowly
together in the spotlight. He saw Becky watching them and winked at her.
She smiled and waved. He knew then that he truly did love both of them.

The dance ended at eleven, and they spent another half-hour working their
way out to the parking lot, talking with the other students and saying good
night.

"So what was it Randy was telling you?" Becky asked once they were back in
the car.

"He said people are starting to gossip about Corinne and Michelle. That
they might be lesbians. Then he said, 'who knows, maybe the whole squad is
getting it on.'"

"Shit," Summer said.

"Yeah."

"I don't think we should panic," Becky said. "I mean, who would believe
that? Even if it is true."

"We have to tell Corinne and Michelle," Summer said.

"I'm betting they know already," Jack said.

"Probably," Becky said. "And I'm betting they don't care."

"No, but the school will. How do you think Father Roberts will react to
that?"

"He doesn't like gossip. In the past, when things like this have happened,
he's tended to get on the P.A. and lecture us about not spreading nasty
rumors. He gives us the parable about not seeing the beam in our eyes while
we pick out the mote in our brother's eye. Or however it goes."

"I'm going to call Corinne anyway," Summer said. "Just to be sure we're all
on the same level."

Randy and Joe Dickson had snuck around back behind the school to work on a
six-pack of Bud Lite.

"What do you think about this thing with Corinne and Michelle?" Randy
asked.

"Goddamned waste of a good pair of tits."

"Two pairs."

"Michelle hasn't got shit."

"You think they're really getting it on?"

"I don't wanna think about it, man, but I think so."

"Seriously?"

"Yeah. Since Billy mentioned it to me on Wednesday, I've been watching
them, at the game last night and tonight at the dance. Far too much
whispering and touching going on. They're either really good friends, or
they're snarfing on each other's snatches."

Randy laughed, amazed.

"Oh, man. How can we find out for sure? This is too cool."

"I don't know. We could follow them some time. Spy on them."

"We'd be in the shit if we got caught. Big time."

"Yeah. I'll think of something."

Randy finished his beer, belched, then smashed it flat on the concrete.

"What did you think of fucking O'Leary tonight? Summer must not be enough
for him."

Joe scoffed.

"You're high. There's no way he's doing anything with either of them."

"No?"

"No. You should hear him in Religion. You'd think he was going to seminary
instead of Annapolis. I bet the whole reason Summer's so into him is
because he doesn't care about her wanting to stay a virgin. He probably
likes it. I bet they don't do a thing besides kiss until their wedding
night."

"Yeah, you're probably right. Nice picture, though, Summer and Becky at the
same time."

"Yeah. Not that it'll ever happen."

  ------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                   XVII.

"So what do you guys want to do?" Becky asked.

"It's too soon to go home," Summer said. "I don't have to be back until
one."

"We could go back to my house and hang out in the garage."

The attic of the Smith garage had been converted to a loft, which Becky's
brothers had used as a game room before going off to college. Jack and
Becky had sat up there talking, and occasionally doing other things, more
than once.

"That's cool," Summer said. "Let's do that."

"What about your folks?" Jack asked.

"My mom never waits up for me," Becky said. "They won't notice unless we
make noise."

Becky's house was dark when they pulled up. Jack parked on the street and
they walked quietly up to the garage. Becky opened the door to the loft and
led them upstairs. Old furniture and junk filled the room. A threadbare
sofa sat along one wall, and a foosball game sat in the middle.

Becky and Summer flopped onto the sofa, and Jack sat in a chair opposite
them.

"So do you think our idea worked?" Becky asked.

"I think so," Jack said. "Some of the guys on the team teased me about it,
but I don't think anyone really thought anything was going on. Between my
reputation and Summer's, I think we're safe now."

Becky grinned.

"Randy was teasing you about it, wasn't he? That was what you didn't want
to tell me."

"Yeah."

"What did he say?"

Jack looked away in embarrassment.

"He, um, he said, 'wouldn't you like to be the meat in a Becky Smith-Summer
Carlson sandwich?'"

Both of them shrieked in laughter, but then Becky slapped her hand over her
mouth and tried to cover Summer's.

"Shh! My parents will hear!"

The two girls stifled giggles for at least a minute before settling down.

"So, um, would you?" Becky asked, and they erupted in giggles again.

He fought a grin.

"I thought I already had."

"Well . . . you haven't exactly had that kind of sandwich, although you've
certainly been to the deli more than once."

More giggles.

Summer smiled at him, and he saw a familiar glint growing in her eyes.

"I bet you'd like that. I bet you set this whole thing up between Becky and
me so you could. You made us both fall in love with you so we'd do whatever
you want."

She reached out and began playing with Becky's hair. Becky glanced at her,
smiling, and put her hand on Summer's thigh, stroking her.

"Which we would," Becky said. "Anything at all."

"Anything."

Jack was growing light-headed watching them. This wasn't like the slumber
party orgies, where he'd had to share them with the other girls, where he
had to perform for a giggling audience. Tonight he had two girls he loved,
who loved him, and who wanted to make love to him and each other. How could
this possibly be wrong?

"I think he wants to watch," Summer said, leaning toward Becky.

"Do you, Jack? Do you want to watch me and Summer?"

He swallowed, breathing raggedly, but didn't answer. Becky grinned, and
turned to Summer, who had continued to play with Becky's hair. They leaned
together, kissing, and Becky twisted around to slide her hand behind
Summer's back. The other hand came up to cup Summer's breast. Summer held
Becky's hand close, and kissed her more deeply.

He could see Summer's nipples growing erect as Becky tweaked them through
the fabric of her bikini top. Summer's hand slid down to Becky's thigh,
then up the slit in her skirt. The skirt was little more than a wrap, and
Summer pulled out the waist, revealing a bikini bottom that matched Becky's
top. She stroked Becky gently between the legs once, then moved up to
fondle Becky's breasts.

Becky pulled off Summer's skirt, and soon they were both down to their
bikinis. With her free hand, Becky untied Summer's top. It fell into
Summer's lap, and Becky resumed fondling Summer's breasts. Summer did the
same to Becky, and in a moment, both girls were topless.

Nearly naked, the two girls looked more alike than Jack had realized.
Summer was taller than Becky, but they had the same type of build and
similar hair color. When Becky slid to the floor in front of Summer to
suckle her breasts, it looked like Summer had a twin making love to her.

"Why don't you come sit over here," she said.

He got up and sat beside her on the couch. She leaned back against him, and
he watched Becky caressing and suckling Summer's breasts. Summer's nipples
were damp and erect now, swollen dark red. Summer held Jack with one hand
and Becky's head with the other. Becky moved back and forth over Summer,
holding her breasts in her hands as she flicked her tongue over one nipple,
then the other, like a bee sipping nectar from a flower. Summer lay still,
breathing heavily.

Becky began to kiss her way down Summer's stomach, and Summer lifted
herself up to let Becky slide off her bikini bottoms. Then she lay all the
way back onto Jack's lap, sideways on the couch now, pulling his hand up to
her breasts. Becky leaned forward and began kissing and licking Summer's
blonde sex. Summer wrapped her right leg around Becky, resting it on her
back.

Jack played with Summer's breasts as Becky opened Summer up to her lingual
caresses. Summer kept one hand on Becky's head while the other dug into
Jack's shoulder. She kept her eyes closed, occasionally whimpering and
twitching.

In a few minutes, her breath began coming in long gasps, and Jack could
feel her stomach twitching. Becky was still licking busily away, and now
worked her middle finger in and out of Summer. Then Summer's hand clawed at
Jack, she let out a single squeak, and convulsed into orgasm. Becky
finished her off and then climbed up onto the couch with them. The two
girls kissed and grinned at Jack.

"Did you like that?" Becky asked.

"Yeah."

"My turn," Summer said.

Still lying on Jack's lap, Summer pulled Becky up further to suckle her
breasts. Jack was free to caress Becky's back and buttocks, and
occasionally feel between her legs, where her bikini bottoms were already
quite damp. Summer sucked hard on Becky's nipples, bringing them to the
perky state of erection that never failed to turn Jack on. With his other
hand, he reached under Becky to caress the breast Summer wasn't servicing.
He thought he could sit there feeling the perfection of her breasts
forever.

But Becky had other ideas. She tried to climb up on Summer's face, but it
would have been too awkward.

"Let's do it this way," Summer said.

Summer slid off the couch and removed Becky's bikini bottoms from behind.
She positioned Becky in Jack's lap, then reversed herself, and sat down on
the floor, leaning her head back between Jack's knees and under Becky. Then
Becky lowered herself down onto Summer's tongue.

Jack was free to kiss and caress Becky as Summer licked up at her. He
played with her breasts as she sucked on his tongue, biting him lightly.
But soon she became too aroused, and laid her head on Jack's shoulder.
Summer ran her hands up Becky's thighs to caress her buttocks. With Summer
licking eagerly at her, and Jack fondling her breasts, it wasn't long
before Becky was in the throes of orgasm. She held Jack tightly, moaning
into his ear. When it was over, Summer got back onto the couch, and he held
them for a few minutes.

Summer was nibbling on his ear, and her hand slid into his lap to feel his
erection.

"I bet I know what you want now."

"Me, too," Becky said. She squirmed around until she was sucking on his
other ear lobe.

He ran his hands down both their backs, feeling their firm butts, then
reversed his hand to feel up between their legs. Both of them were so wet
that he could slip a finger into them very easily.

"Mmm," Summer said. "Take your pick. We can take turns."

"Both."

Becky giggled.

"Both? At once? That might be hard. I don't think you're that big."

"Get up."

They got off him, and he stood up. He started undressing, and they assisted
him, stripping him in a few seconds. Both of them reached out to stroke his
cock, and Becky dropped to her knees to take him into her mouth. Summer
kneeled down beside her and they alternated sucking on him for a minute or
two. Then he pulled them up.

"Summer, sit on the couch and spread your legs. Becky, kneel over her like
you were doing to me."

Summer smiled and sat down.

"On the edge, slide down."

"Okay. I think I know what you have in mind."

She slid down further and opened herself. Becky kneeled over her, and
Summer pulled her down until she was sitting right on Summer's sex.

"Like that. Press yourself down against her."

The two girls worked themselves down until they could rub their sexes
together.

"Like that?" Becky asked.

"Yes."

Jack kneeled in front of them between Summer's legs. He positioned himself
and thrust between them. Both women moaned and squeezed him tighter. They
were wet enough to lubricate him, and he was now thrusting between both
their labia, stroking both clits with his cock. The sensation was similar
to being inside them, but somewhat rougher and bonier.

He looked over Becky's shoulder and saw that the two girls were deep in a
kiss. Becky was supporting herself against the back of the couch, and
Summer was once again fondling Becky's breasts.

On one thrust, he misaligned himself and slipped into Becky by mistake. He
started to withdraw, but they stopped him.

"That's enough dry-humping," Summer said. "Just do us now."

The two girls continued rubbing themselves against each other while Jack
thrust at Becky from behind. Becky began to moan, thrusting back at him.
She leaned forward onto Summer, and Summer pulled Jack up to kiss him. He
felt Summer's hand slipping between them to fondle Becky and feel Jack
sliding in and out of her.

"I can feel you," she moaned at him. "I can feel you fucking her. I want to
feel you coming in her."

Jack thrust faster, thumping against Becky's plump little butt. When he
felt her shudder and squeeze him as her orgasm finally took her, he
released the brakes and let himself go. A moment later, he squirted off
inside her. Summer's hand was hard against the base of his cock, feeling
his spasms as the sperm flowed out of him.

Slowly they relaxed, and Jack slid to the floor. Becky slid with him, and
they leaned against Summer, catching their breath.

A minute or two later, Becky twisted around in his grasp.

"Sit up on the couch. Let me get you back up for her."

Jack sat up on the couch, and Becky leaned forward to take his deflating
cock in her mouth. Summer leaned over and took a few sucks herself.

"Mmm," she said. "I can taste her all over you."

He kissed and fondled Summer as Becky worked on him. In a few minutes, she
had produced another erection. Summer swung herself around and sat down on
it, swallowing him up. Becky climbed up next to them to watch.

Summer rode him slowly, trying to squeeze herself as Kisu did. They had
been trading ideas with her since she and Jack had begun working through
the pillow book. Summer was a long way from having Kisu's muscular control,
but it still felt very nice.

He fondled Summer's breasts as she rose up and down, rubbing herself
against him. He slid down to give her a better angle, and she was soon
groaning and biting at his neck as she thrust at him. He felt Becky's hand
settle onto his balls, feeling where they were joined. Summer began
thrashing in climax, clawing at his shoulders. She came once, twice, then
three times before collapsing against him in exhaustion.

Becky leaned in to kiss them.

"You didn't come?" she asked Jack.

"You can have him again," Summer said.

Becky grinned.

"Okay."

Summer rolled off Jack, and Becky lay back on her end of the couch. Jack
climbed on to her and thrust in. Summer slid off the couch on to the floor
to give them more room. She kneeled against the couch and watched.

Jack was getting close now, and Becky just held him tightly, wrapping
herself around him the way she knew he liked. He thrust all the way in and
out, wanting to bring her off with him. When she began to whine and squeeze
him, he could tell she was nearly there. Summer leaned close, nibbling on
Jack's ear and whispering obscenities to him. Just as he and Becky
approached release, he felt Summer's hand again sliding between his legs to
feel him ejaculating. He groaned, pushed as far into Becky as he could get,
and let loose. Becky whimpered, biting at his shoulder and shaking under
him.

"That feels so neat," Summer said. "It's like I get to share it."

In a while they rose, cleaned themselves up, and dressed. They led Becky to
her front door and kissed her good night.
