Chapter Four
It was hard to look at this new addition to my left hand and not be able
to understand just what Tammy was thinking and why it had brought that
curious look to her face. Of course now it wasn't so curious, as it was
a dead giveaway of a woman's desire to put my own words to the test. I
had clearly stated to her that I would accept a marriage proposal from
her if one was offered, and it was suddenly obvious that Tammy was
neither a traditionalist nor intent on patiently waiting for me to offer
her the same proposal. Time was short, and anything that smacked of
hesitation on my part would surely blow up in my face.
"May I ask you something before I give you my answer?" I said, acutely
aware that any answer I gave was going to have a profound effect on my
life one way or the other.
"What?" she asked almost with great hesitation, the look on her face now
betraying some sense of being somewhat worried.
"Well in addition to wanting to know why you have now successfully
blocked my own plans for asking you to marry me at the right time and
right place in the very near future," I answered, "I'm just a little
more than curious to know exactly why this proposal came almost
immediately after the issue of marriage had come up for the very first
time. You were right when you said earlier that so much has happened in
just the course of one day, and to go from being just another of your
students this morning to having made love to you this evening to now
being proposed to this night has to be the most fascinating day any one
person can experience."
"We're moving too fast then?" she asked, sounding very disappointed.
"That's what you're saying? I'm sorry. I don't even know what came
over me, and knowing now that you were planning on asking me soon anyway
just makes me feel like I've done something stupid."
"Absolutely not," I replied firmly. "There's nothing stupid about what
you just did, and don't even think about it for another second. I
wasn't even suggesting that we had moved too fast, only that things had
gone faster than perhaps anyone else might ever have experienced in
quite a few lifetimes. There's nothing about this day that I would
change, not even your proposal. And regardless of what anyone might
surely say about the two of us appearing to move far too quickly for our
own good, I can assure you that it isn't all that much faster than my
parents moved after having first met. They began living together the
first night they met and were discussing marriage two weeks later. Less
than two months after that they were engaged. The only reason they
didn't elope was because of the many close friends they had that would
have been very hurt had they run off and got married without telling
anyone.
"Honestly, I don't have any friends I would care to keep informed when
it comes to my love life. My relatives all live in other states with
the sole exception being my uncle, and that leaves only him and my
parents as people I would care to have with us when we tie the knot.
But aside from this, I am just a little curious as to why you wanted to
propose so quickly. I'm not asking because I am hesitating or have
doubts about us, and I swear this is true on my life. I'm just
curious."
Already having one hand under mine, Tammy now rested her other on top
and firmly held my hand as I watched her thumb rub back and forth
against the ring. I could feel her love for me as though she was a
working heater in a bitterly cold room. Anyone who might say that love
cannot be real in just one day has never felt such love literally
radiating out from someone and being experienced by someone else in a
tangible way. It would have been impossible to look at this woman and
see such obvious love for me in her eyes without being moved to the
degree that I was at that moment. Who in their right minds could not be
under the loving gaze of such a beautiful, mature woman and not be
deeply touched by how the depth of her love had provoked her into
offering a marriage proposal when the Earth had not even made one
complete turn on its axis since the first date with the woman had taken
place?
It was clear that Tammy didn't know what to say. Despite my
reassurance, she must have still felt somewhat embarrassed at having
done what she did. I needed to take the bull by the horns and make sure
that the night didn't end with her still feeling that way. Being an
author of romantic stories in which my characters did behave in much the
same way as she and I had been behaving all day didn't automatically
mean that I always knew what to do in every situation two real lovers
might find themselves in. The situations I wrote about were purely
fiction, but now that fiction seemed to have become a reality for us,
and the burden of making things turn out the way I wanted was a much
more difficult one to deal with than just putting pen to paper.
"Come and sit with me on the bed," I said softly before slowly leading
her by the hand over to her bed. As soon as we had sat down beside each
other, I continued. "Tammy, my love, please believe me when I say that
you haven't done anything wrong. Everything you've done has been far in
excess of the best story I could have imagined. I'm completely blown
away by all that has happened today, and I have no intention of
disappointing you tonight in anything you have asked of me. Perhaps
it's just the romantic in me that wants to hear with his own ears the
things that were going through your mind when you asked me to marry
you. You've made my heart dance all day with an energy it's never felt
before. Now please. Make it dance again. Reveal your innermost
thoughts to me."
Tammy finally seemed to look more sure of herself as she smiled. "I'm
not even sure where to begin," she said. "You have to understand that
none of this would have ever happened had you not been such an amazing
writer or every bit as charming, romantic, and magical as the characters
you created. You may not really understand this, but one day it will
become all too painfully obvious that we women seem to start out our
lives full of hope that one day our Prince Charming will ride into our
lives and hold our hands as we walk with him into the sunset in a
happily ever after ending. But as the years go by, so many of those
same women find themselves alone, or struggling to mend a broken heart,
or having settled for far less than what they had wanted in their youth,
or worse, having to endure a daily life of abuse from the man they may
have once thought was their Prince Charming.
"I had reached a point not so long ago where I had accepted the idea
that the kind of man we all seemed to want could only be found in the
pages of a book. In real life, such men were absent, and the only real
men out there were those who talked a good game until they got what they
wanted from a woman, or who couldn't get past their macho personalities
if they took a four-year course on romance and passed a written test
harder than a state Bar exam. Men seemed to live, breathe, and eat sex,
and what most men don't seem to understand is that women love sex too,
especially if it's great sex. But sex with a woman is supposed to be a
two-way street. We love romance and passion, something that men seem to
know nothing about. We could be nameless and the most boring people on
the planet, but so long as we immediately get down on our knees and suck
their dicks, men are perfectly fine with this.
"And so I guess I joined the ranks of those who have just given up and
given men what they wanted in the hopes that one day a certain man might
come along who did understand us and would reveal himself to be my
Prince Charming once I had slept with him. But it never worked. Soon
the excuses would start. He was too busy to see me. He was not sure if
this was what he wanted. And sometimes there were no excuses at all.
They just wouldn't talk to me again. This was the state of my life when
I first began reading the chapters of your story, and so I hope you can
understand the effect they had on me. I sincerely doubt that I would
have reacted as I did had you been a female instead. But knowing that a
very handsome and attractive young man was writing what I was reading,
it just made me eventually start thinking that if I knew you were
anything like the people you were writing about, what would my life be
like if I didn't at least take the chance to find out? And if you were
that rare and much sought after man, how would I have reacted? Your
being one of my students and so young were obstacles, but I had noticed
the way you were looking at me and probably thinking you were getting
away with it without being noticed. And that began to work on my
resistance to the idea of taking a risk on you.
"At the time the thought that your being so much younger than me hadn't
really been much of an issue. Maybe I'm different, but I didn't feel as
though that really mattered as much as seeing my heart's deepest desire
become a reality. And besides, my sister had told me several times that
there was nothing quite like having a younger, handsome man gaze into
her eyes and profess his undying love for her, knowing quite well that
he had chosen her in her advanced age over girls that she felt were more
desirable than she was. I'm sure that must have affected my thinking
somewhat.
"So anyway, there I was with you in the bathroom after having
experienced the most beautiful and mind blowing day any woman could
imagine. Just think. How many women in my situation might have decided
not to take the risk and would never have known what they had missed out
on? Well, that doesn't really matter much. You may not be able to
understand what has been going in and out of my mind at various times
today, and I'm not referring to the emotions I know we've both been
feeling. I'm talking about the outright fear that you might either be
just a dream I'm having, or that tomorrow you'll wake up and decide that
I'm all wrong for you."
"Wait," I interrupted. "You asked me to marry you because you're
afraid?"
Tammy drew her lower lip into her mouth and looked down at my chest.
Then she nodded before looking up at me as though she expected to be
criticized for having asked me out of fear.
I smiled tenderly at her as a prelude to what I knew I needed to say to
calm her fears. "Tammy," I said as I placed my hand on her face and
began slowly moving it away from her nose towards her ear. "I don't
know what you expected my response to be, but I assure you that I'm
deeply touched by the thought that you love me this much to propose
marriage so suddenly and so soon for fear that one woman's fantasy
romance might disappear once the Sun rises. It makes my heart feel so
wonderful because, although you may not have realized it, you're not the
only one who has had this same fear. Why else would I have considered
asking you to marry me at some point over the next few weeks? I don't
think I have to explain. Your fears have been my fears, and if I had
had a ring on me, perhaps I would have acted as you did just now.
Instead, I figured that without a ring, I might as well start planning
on the right place and time to pop the question. But believe me.
There's nothing that this particular man appreciates more than a woman
who isn't afraid to buck tradition and take the lead. My father once
told me that all men love the game of pursuing a woman, but all men hate
being pursued by a woman. That may be true of many or even most men.
It was never true with me."
"I know," she replied. "The woman always seemed to pursue your male
characters in your stories."
"Oh well, that's not because I enjoyed being pursued," I said with a
chuckle. "That's because I don't know how to write about the male
pursuing the female. I've watched enough romance movies to know that
pursuing a woman can be quite difficult, and I didn't want to be
unrealistic by writing how a man easily wins a woman's heart without her
having offered at least some resistance. If I had approached you first,
would you have been so easy to win?"
"That's a good question," she replied. "I don't know. I guess it's
possible that I might have been too nervous to let you right in. But I
don't want to think about that. What I do want is to tell you that your
fears about me waking up tomorrow and deciding that this wasn't right
for me are just so completely wrong. Any woman who would give you up
deserves to be alone and miserable for the rest of her life. Let's put
it this way. A woman has a choice between a handsome man with all the
intelligence and romantic skills of Mike Tyson and a man just like you.
Could you even begin to imagine that she'd wake up in the morning and
decide she'd rather have Mike over you?"
"No," I replied with a brief laugh. "But I am far younger than you, and
you did say to me earlier that our age difference was giving you lots of
things to worry about."
"Yes, I know," she said. "And I haven't stopped worrying. And maybe
that's also part of the reason I wanted to hurry up and get married. I
feel so guilty for acting so selfishly, but I couldn't help thinking
that it's a lot harder to end a marriage than it is to just break it off
with your girlfriend."
Hearing her refer to herself as my girlfriend had such a wonderful
effect on me. It's not every day that a late-thirties bombshell refers
to herself as the girlfriend of a young man who desperately loved her.
"Well that's all I can think to say," she said. "What are your
thoughts?"
"What I think is that I haven't been able to make love to your ass yet,"
I replied with a wide smile, "and until I do, I will not tell you what
my answer to your proposal is."
"That's not fair!" she said with an obviously feigned look of shock. "I
wouldn't insist on sucking your dick before telling you my answer."
"Yeah well I don't consider myself or any part of my body to be even a
tenth as beautiful as you are. So your ass, and then my answer. And we
do it in the shower."
Tammy continued to flash her false look of shock at me for a moment.
"Okay," she said. "You can take your time and enjoy yourself down there
as much as you'd like because I think I already know what your answer
will be."
I just smiled but said nothing as we walked back into the bathroom and
realized that the water had been running for some time. Thankfully it
was still hot and enabled us to enjoy about ten minutes in the shower
before it had begun to start cooling off. I took full advantage of the
opportunity and used my lips and tongue to shower her behind with as
much attention as I could show it in the time I had. Tammy allowed me
to move her body in whichever way my hands directed her from the
pressure I placed on her legs, but she remained quiet as I enjoyed
myself. There was nothing at all unpleasant about the experience, and I
had hoped that she wasn't too uncomfortable with the things I was doing
to her backside.
Once the water had started running cold, we turned it off and remained
standing in the tub just to kiss and enjoy the moment for a few
minutes. I remember being somewhat surprised at her French kissing me
so vigorously after what I had just been doing, but such were the kinky
things that Tammy seemed to have a penchant for. It would provoke no
complaints from me.
Seeing her as she was after having allowed the water to run over her
body and through her hair was a new and delightful snack for my eyes to
feast on. Her brown hair now seemed much darker as it lay slick and
straight back from her head to her shoulders. The drops of water on her
face and stomach glistened in the bright lights burning over the vanity
nearby. Looking at her in this way revealed her to be every bit as
beautiful as she was when her skin was dry and her hair full of twisting
curls below the ears.
"I know I promised you an answer," I said, "but I don't want it to be
here. I know a place about twenty minutes away, and I can't think of a
more beautiful place to take a more beautiful woman in light of what
needs to be said tonight. Will you go there with me?"
"I would go anywhere with you, my love," she replied.
We spent about fifteen minutes getting dressed and making ourselves
smell nice. Having brought no cologne with me, I settled for some of
her Love Spell lotion from Victoria's Secret. It had such a
spellbinding aroma to it, and regardless of whether or not it was
designed for a woman, I became immediately addicted to its scent and
practically bathed my body in it.
Tammy let me smell several different bottles of her perfume before I
chose Be Delicious, which she then sprayed into her hair as well as on
her neck and blouse. She was dressed differently now, wearing a long
black shirt that stretched down to her knees and black Denim shorts that
were several sizes too big for her and which were held to her tightly by
a black belt. I felt somewhat self-conscious by having to wear the same
red Polo shirt and blue jeans.
"Why do you always wear clothes that are bigger than your size?" I
asked.
"Habit, I think," she replied. "I've done that since I was little. I
just feel more comfortable when my clothes aren't hugging my skin."
"Oh okay," I replied. "By the way. You smell so beautiful, my
princess."
Tammy smiled. "Thank you, my love," she replied. "And you, wearing my
lotion like you are, have cast a spell on me, a spell I couldn't
possibly resist."
"Let me guess," I said. "Is it a, uh, love spell?"
Tammy laughed. "Why yes it is," she said. "However did you guess?"
"Just lucky I suppose. Are you ready?"
"Who's driving?"
"Allow me."
The place where we were going was a small town divided in half by a
river, with nearly equal halves situated on either side. The town was
called Chestertown, and a boat dock on either side came equipped with
varying numbers of metal benches in which one could sit down and enjoy
the beauty of the lights of the stores and homes on the other side of
the river while the current would make the sides of the boats docked in
front of you gently rub up against the wooden frame of the dock.
Overhead was the Chestertown bridge that was held very high from the
ground by the columns of stone in the river supporting it. On a quiet
night such as this, one could always hear, in addition to the boats
rubbing up against the dock, the cars and trucks moving along on the
bridge as well as the very light sound of classical music being played
on the external speakers of the restaurant which would sit directly
behind the bench we chose to sit on. The setting was perfect.
I had just been about to answer Tammy's proposal when the speakers
behind us began to play Tchaikovsky's familiar Sleeping Beauty waltz. I
wasn't a huge fan of classical music, but I did know some of the more
romantic pieces, and this had been one of them. I stood up and held out
my hand to Tammy. "Would you give me the pleasure of this dance?" I
asked.
Tammy couldn't contain her smile as she took my hand and rose to her
feet. There on the dock we danced as we might have to any slow love
song while out of the corner of my eye I could see many of the diners
next to the windows of the restaurant looking out at us. It made no
difference to me, other than to raise some faint curiosity about just
how romantic a couple we might have seemed to them.
"I never expected this," Tammy said. "Dancing outside by ourselves on a
boat dock in front of a restaurant filled with people staring at us?
It's quite possibly the most romantic thing that's ever happened to me."
I couldn't resist kissing her at that point, and the thought of being
watched didn't phase me in the least as our mouths made love to each
other in the light cast on us by the restaurant and one outdoor lamp
near us on the boat side of the dock. We had stopped moving by this
point and let our tongues do their own dancing, unseen but not unfelt.
Soon the temptation became excruciating, and I realized that I would
always regret it if I didn't act on what my mind and heart were both
telling me to do.
"Have you ever been guilty of trespassing?" I asked, unable to keep my
smile from possibly giving away my intentions.
"Trespassing?" Tammy asked. Appearing confused, she looked over at the
restaurant on one side of us and then over to the boat on the opposite
side. Then she looked at me with a look of shock that was less than
complete only because of the barely discernable smile that was fighting
to gain notice. "You're not talking about getting on someone's boat,
are you?"
"That's exactly what I'm talking about," I replied. "Come on. The
owners are probably not anywhere near here, and the people in the
restaurant will think we're the owners."
"What if one or more of them happen to know the owners?"
I thought about this for a moment and then looked further down the dock
to an even larger boat that was outside the view of anyone in the
restaurant. "Okay, but I have another idea," I said as I led her down
the dock to the boat I'd seen. "Now here we have a much bigger boat
which cannot be viewed from the restaurant and is bathed in the darkness
of the night, which means we will not be seen. Now tell me you're not
at least a little interested."
Tammy looked at the boat and then at me before looking back at the
boat. "God, I hope we don't get caught," she said in an obvious signal
that she was game.
Fortunately for us, the door to the interior of the boat was nothing
more than a frame that offered no protection for whatever was inside had
we been thieves intent on stealing something.
Once inside, I immediately noticed the lack of a bed and found that one
of the two couches would have to suffice if we were going to do this.
Of course it would suffice! I wasn't crazy enough to throw away this
opportunity to create a memory to look back on with satisfaction because
of a couch! It did prove to be uncomfortable for me to make love to her
on it, but I made do. Our shirts remained on as I thrust myself inside
her again and again while she kept one hand over her mouth to prevent
her wild moans from reaching the ears of anyone who might not enjoy
hearing them. Certainly neither of us wanted to hear another little
child ask his mother if we were having sex. Nevertheless, the
experience was still quite intense. I broke out quickly in a drenching
sweat as I worked her vagina until my erection exploded and sent more of
my emission inside her. Suddenly I was aware that she had mentioned
before her difficulty in being brought to orgasm this way. Without
thinking, I moved my mouth down between her legs and attempted to avoid
the taste of my own sperm as I savaged her clit until she also erupted
in orgasm. Thankfully, I had accomplished this without having come into
contact with the ejaculate that must have been coming out of her by that
point.
"Tell me now that you think we shouldn't have done this," I said as I
laid back on top of her.
"You'll never hear that from me," she replied.
"Well then, I can't think of a better time or place to tell you, my most
beautiful and amazing angel, that I would indeed be honored and
delighted to accept your proposal of marriage and become your husband at
any time that you desire me to so become. In other words, my answer is
yes."
Tammy threw her arms around me and kissed me with such excitement that I
felt at peace with both having agreed to marry her and the way in which
I had done so. There could not ever be any love as strong or more right
than ours was, and no objection that I knew would soon be forthcoming
from my parents or anyone else would make the slightest difference to
me, and I was sure the same was true for her as well. This was our
story playing out in our lives, even if the unseen hand of some
all-powerful god was amusing himself by writing our story in one of
Heaven's books. The thought was itself amusing. An author writing a
love story about an author who was writing a love story about someone
else.
"I love you so much," Tammy said. "Do you want to have a long
engagement or a short one?"
"The truth?" I asked.
"Yes."
"Short. Very short. Tomorrow if possible."
"Really? You mean it? You want to get married right away?"
"As quickly as possible. I won't be truly happy until you are my wife."
"Oh Steven!" she yelled before suddenly slapping her hand back across
her mouth.
"I don't think anyone heard you," I said with a chuckle.
"Oh I'm so happy, my darling. You don't know how happy you've made me.
This really has been the most wonderful day of my life. I'm convinced
more now than ever that you really are one of your characters that's
come to life. And you couldn't convince me otherwise because you don't
know that we're not living the lives written for us in someone else's
story."
I was immediately taken by the coincidence at having thought almost the
same thing just a few moments earlier. And I began to wonder just how
possible it might be that all of life wasn't just someone else's story.
Tammy and I got dressed and headed back to her place. The night was no
longer young, and fatigue had begun to set in for both of us. We talked
on the way about the waiting period we would have to endure, but it
would be just one day. To get to where we needed to be in our lives
together, she decided that it was necessary to take the next two days
off from work, and I would likewise skip school so that we could apply
for the marriage license and break the news to whomever we decided to
tell, as well as prepare for the big moment that would come on our
second day out of school. I found myself hoping that, despite what
would be their inevitable lecture about moving too fast and probably a
warning that I was making a serious mistake, my parents would accept the
decision I had made and attend the ceremony. Time, of course, would
tell.
Once we had gotten back to her place, Tammy escorted me into her bedroom
and laid down beside me on the bed. Heaven, I had thought to myself,
could not have been any better imagined than what I was experiencing
right then at that moment. For one young man like myself to have gone
through all the things I had in just one day was simply unbelievable to
me then, but then again so were the September 11 terrorist attacks that
would later claim the lives of both my parents while they were enjoying
breakfast in the Windows On The World restaurant, located on the top
floors of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Yes, so much could
happen in just one day that now as I look back, I know that what
happened to us may have been unusual, but it really wasn't as surprising
as I had thought. As we fell asleep in each other's arms, I knew that
the following day would be both a happy one as well as a stressful one.
And facing my parents would be the most stressful part of all.
