===================
Nick posted chapter 21 of Summer Camp 3, it is on his website at:
www.nickscipio.com
Aside from Kensas and Japanese swords (very interesting thread started
by tphile and dai, accidentally, thanks) since chapter 20 was posting
most of the discussion at the forum was about Paul's little head, the
coming aftermath and how he would explain the spending of the
emergency money (credit card).
Normally in my thoughts" I do not include SWAGs, but it is rather a
description and commenting on the actual chapter with providing
references to back chapters (if I remember them the moment, since I am
doing this switching between the windows in which I read the chapter
and in which I am writing this -- so this is like 24", only that it
takes me with proofreading about some three hours to do that!).
Though I want to provide you the following statement, as I made it
earlier in the forum: Summer Camp is full of mirrored scenes and
deja-vu situations and so -- until the contrary is proven -- I believe
that Gina hasn't done drugs, even not in SC 3,14, even though there
had been all symptoms. I believe it, because it is _too obvious_.
Maybe I will be proven false very early, we will see.
In the forum had been some messages concerning the emergency money
spending, and now I believe, that Paul is reading the forum ;-):
> I told Mom that Kendall and I had gone out to dinner
> and a late movie. I didn't broach the subject of my
> emergency' spending, though. I wanted to save that
> for when I could talk to her face to face.
This behaviour is different from what we are familiar with Paul -- did
he lie his mother anytime before?
Nevertheless, Paul spent some three months alone" in Knoxville
without greater incidents, but 24 hours w/o Gina _and_ his parents at
home is enough to fuck up more shit, than in the whole sage, through
73 chapters or so, with 1 million+ words. Un-fucking-believable!
- credit card betrayal
- lies
- drug possession (though only indirectly)
- silly spending of money
> My initial anger and frustration over Kendall's cocaine use
> had cooled, but I was still disturbed by it.
Hopefully he will discuss it with Kendall. But I feel here also, that
Paul already begins to tolerate the coke (see my message Details on
SC 3,20 Part II").
> Then I began thinking about why cocaine was wrong.'
> It was illegal, but why? Who said it was wrong? Society?
What about reality'?
> A lot of people would say that nudism was wrong. But
> that didn't make it true.
True, but the comparison stinks.
> An even larger number of people would say that swinging
> was wrong as well. But Susan and my parents had always
> taught me that love and communication were the keys to a
> good relationship, rather than sexual fidelity.
Nick is spinning the bow to the main theme in SC 3 (as I believe) ...
Trust:
> Trust was definitely important, but it was possible to have
> sex with another person without breaking the bond of trust
> in a relationship.
It can be discussed about the lack of trust in the G-P-K relationship
and the reasons, but more interesting is to look some lines back:
> My parents called, concerned that they hadn't been able to
> reach me the night before. They had even called Elizabeth
> Coulter, who had driven to our house, only to find it dark
> and empty.
Isn't here also a lack of trust of Paul's parents in their son? (And
they had a reason for that, though they didn't know).
> Who made the rules about what was right and what was wrong?
Society, politicians, your neighbors, friends, we all as a whole ...
hell that's not the theme here. The theme is, that until now Paul's
world was black and white, but now he isn't so sure anymore (Nick said
some months ago, that Paul begins to learn that there are different
shades of grey and ... white ... powder?)
Will Paul to find out? Will he try it the next time? Or will he just
discuss it with Kendall, they'll get into a fight, or Adam and his
friend Leo will get involved? During chapter 19 and 20 Nick left so
many clues out in the wild, that's really dangerous, injuries are
threathening!
> (...)the line between right' and wrong' had blurred a little.
Only a few lines ... I really like how Nick is using words and I
believe, that he's using special phases intentionally for making the
reader think about. Did he mean that so or not', we readers are
considering. Some of us -- I won't exclude me -- maybe are
interpretating more in his words, than he really said. I must confess,
that I learned from this dialogue. I think more about peoples
statements in R/L and about what they _didn't_ say. OTOH there is the
danger to see more than really is.
Back on the story.
> I had been raised to avoid drugs, and for most of my life, I had.
Uh-huh? How was that meant? Most of my life" as in 18+ years minus
one night? Or, Nick said that a time ago, weren't we told every minute
of Paul's life? (Or am I seeing again white mice?)
> I had avoided the Cocaine Talk (...)
Paul is good in Talks (remember SC2), but in SC3 he is even better in
avoiding them.
> So you snorted coke instead? I mean, I managed to say no.'
> Then I guess you're a better person than me,' she snapped.
> I didn't mean it like that,' I soothed. I'm sorry.'
No good tactics for a serious Talk.
> Paul, you don't know what it's like,' she said. It made me feel
> so alive. I could do anything. I could ask you to do what I wanted,
> instead of being embarrassed. You don't know what it's like to be
> me sometimes. Everybody expects me to be the good girl, to get
> good grades, to speak properly, to look nice, to go to church.
> _Aaaah!_ I'm going crazy inside!'
A very interesting paragraph -- Kendall don't want to be _his little
girl anymore_. Remember, how Kendall told, long ago, about the book
Fear of Flying"? Isn't it so, that Gina and Paul during their visit
to Ibiza did, what Kendall ever wanted to do?
> Kendall would never have sex. She'd never do drugs. She's so
> pure and good.' I hate it, I tell you. I'm not like that. I'm not some
> straight-laced prude.' (...)
> Everyone has all these expectations for me, but what about _me?_
> What about my expectations? Can't I go out and have fun every
> once in a while without someone thinking I'm a slut, or a drug
> addict, or or worse?!"
Kendall's statement me heavily reminded to the scene in ... SC 1, 19:
> And all the older guys, the dads, they just stare at me when they
> think I'm not looking. And nobody talks to me, nobody asks me to
> go hiking, nobody does anything with me," she said morosely. (...)
> I just look older, and I hate it. And I hate this place. And I'm so
> tired of being lonely. I thought you'd be different, (...) I'm so tired
> of being treated like the enemy, or like I don't exist," (...)
It's not the same, but similar -- deja vu's and mirrors! (And in case
one can't follow my thoughts here, I will come back to this,
certainly.
But let us have another look on Kendalls last statement before going
further:
> Can't I go out and have fun every once in a while without
> someone thinking I'm a slut, or a drug addict, or or worse?!
First: Who is _one_?
Second: Every once in a while?
Third: Worse?
> I've used it twice, Paul. _Twice.:"
That question is answered. She used it twice. Once with Paul and
Felicia and once with Big Mistake Guy.
> But that was a big, _big_ mistake.
Kendall is mysterious.
> I knew you wouldn't take advantage of the situation."
Did I ever mention deja vu and mirroring?
> He took advantage of you," Wren said.
> He did not," Christy shot back.
That was in SC 3,15 and in a totally different context (Though wasn't
it the chapter after the so-believed drug use of Gina?) To much
mirrors here, and since breaking one means 7 years of pity, let's go
on...
> What _happened_ with you and Big Mistake Guy?"
We really want to know, thanks Paul!
> I don't want to talk about it," she half-whispered.
Oh! Anybody remembering Nicks comment some months ago, as one forum
member asked, when he will tell about this. All of us believed, Nick's
answer will be SSC#1, but he answered SSC#2. According to the
unwritten agreeance in the forum the difference is, that aswers to
questions with SSC#1 can be expected when reading until the end of
SC4, but answers to SSC#2 we rather don't expect never.
Who said, that woman mean yes if they say no and vice versa? Rapists?
Well, Kendall tells...
> His name was Wes," she said softly, so softly that I almost
> missed it.
Wesley Snipes? Wesley Clark? Where did they study? ;-) .... Now it are
almost three years of time I am reading Summer Camp and _still_ Nick
is surprising me with words I never heard before (what isn't so hard,
since as me regular readers know, English is not my native language)
... this chapters new word is enmity'
Kendall is telling like a waterfall, and now we know why she was so
concerned about Paul trying to pledge the Grreks and why she is so
afraid of Gina being a slut member ... oops ... why Gina joined
Hayley's sorority.
> By then," she continued, I knew Gina was coming to UT, and
> I was angry. You were supposed to come to UT by yourself,
> and we could be boyfriend-girlfriend just the two of us.
That was discussed in the forum. Seems, that Kendall also is a forum
member. Miz Pattay? Hell, who am I -- T.J.?
> (...) I was just angry and frustrated and and I wanted
> to _scream_."
The passage in the chapter is a bit longer, because Kendall tells
about Hayley-slut and Wes (I have no attribute yet!), but in general,
this two short statements are enough for explaining Kendall's
behaviour to Gina through the whole SC 3 -- and here the question
comes in my mind, what _Gina knows_ about the Big Mistake Guy
Incident? What is Gina's truth?
> I hadn't realized that the events surrounding Big Mistake Guy
> _also_ had to do with Gina's decision to attend UT.
Maybe Paul is reading the forum messages, but between all the posts
about Kansas, beer and Europeans Who Don't Get It he missed some
important SWAGs. ;-) Let us hope, he didn't read about the Japanese
swords, otherwise Wes et. al. will share the fate of Anna Boleyn...
Folks, I have to speed up, my thoughts on the chapters are longer than
the chapter (not counting words, but lines...)
> _Gina hasn't fucked everything that moved, I thought crossly.
True. Only Tomás, Heather, Scott, Leah, ..., Regan, her strap-on and
what-so-ever.
> But I held my tongue.
Little head in control. Paul is eager to hear the whole story. (As do
we.)
> But it got worse," she said, sniffing miserably.
So it is proved, that sniffing miserably isn't a result of coke --
from SC 3,8:
> Gina looked like hell. Her eyes were red, she snuffled miserably.
Can we assume now, that the night after the Sex Shop Visit Gina
didn't use coke, as Kendall didn't use coke before riding in the jeep
to Chattanooga? Is this a deja-vu situation or a mirrored scene?
> (...)I trusted her [Hayley-slut], Paul," she raged.
Leading-motive number back in action.
> She told all the other people at the party, too," Kendall continued.
So also Gina probably knows. Or, Gina doesn't know and ... what will
happen on her ski-trip to Vermont? Something will happen again?
> You probably think I'm a slut. (...)"
Huh? Kendall isn't Hayley... I hope Paul knows that.
> No, I don't think you're a slut," I said
Yes, he knows, but as in Dallas -- Friday 10 CT (or was it nine ET ;-)
<g> ), the anchor for some new complications has been set (when life
did get such complicated?"):
> My anger had cooled, but I wouldn't soon forget what Hayley
> and the Greeks had done.
What Paul will do? (IIRC chapter 23 only will bring us back to UT, so
maybe end of May will bring the answer!)
> When I pictured Hayley in my mind, I practically snarled.
> _I want her _dead,_ I thought viciously._
Adam and Paul, Bronson and a cop seeing red or what's the US title of
the movie series, coming up? No, guys, it is a coming-to-age-story,
not The Godfather and Paul isn't Charles Bronson, Joe-Whatshisname's
razor is applying.
> [T]hough, cocaine was the least of my worries (...)
Did anybody expect this statement, before the chapter was posted? Or
even after the first few paragraphs? Did even anyone expect the BMG
story? (i.e. BMG = Big Mistake Guy)
> I, on the other hand, felt like murdering Hayley Devlin. And if I ever
> got my hands on Wes whatever his last name was, Kendall wouldn't
> tell me I'd kill him too.
Hayley-slut is named Hayley Devil ... see SC 3,14:
> A bunch of the guys started chanting Hayley Devil" (her nickname
> it was a play on her last name).
Nick ... nickname, TERB, evil ... devil ... play .... who's playing
with us? (Sidenote: Are there any bets out in the wild on Wes' name?
Suggestions to me franzkafka79@hotmail.com )
> But sex wasn't supposed to be about humiliation.
There are enough out in ASSM as writers or readers (and certainly in
R/L) believing in exactly that, it is again this black and white
thing... wasn't The Room and Bernie Kestrel and the photos Susan
burned already an early clue on that?)
Somehow, I didn't realise it first, but Kendall got home to
Chattanooga and Paul returned back home, without Adam having a
discussion with him, Paul's parents already returned from NYC. Moment,
a line back...
> Hayley was guilty of using oxygen that a human being
> could've used instead.
What does that mean? (U know, Europeans....) (Sidenote: I really Don't
Get It, really please tell me!)
(2nd sidenote: Maybe I Got It: Hayley-slut has no right to breath
oxygen ...)
For shortening it: Paul will not kill Wes, and also Adam won't ...
though he has a gun (my opinion).
> I'm sorry, Mom, (...) I really don't wanna talk about it."
> She nodded and then quietly left me to my dark thoughts.
Do You think, Paul, you're off the hook. If your mom gets the invoice
of the CC, she will remember your statement:
> And nothing happened Friday night."
The next sub chapter went by and there I remarked one interesting
line:
> (...) Big Mistake Guy (I refused to call him Wes, even in my head).
Did anaybody come the thouht, that Kendall lied concerning BMG
identity, fearing that Paul could over-react? Is Wes in reality Rod?
> who'd been at that party (Rod?)
* * *
Here is time for a short break. What did the readers expect? Paul
teaching Kendall about morality and honesty? There might be some of
these, e.g. the guy who started the Disappointed" discussion. Most of
the readers have their favourite SC girl, and mine is Wren (who will
marry Trip), but I also hope that Kendall isn't Aunt D (so her phone
number maybe could be offered at www.ebay.com ?) (Sidenote to ....:
now you're surprised -- it's not Gina as you supposed!)
* * *
Paul is returning to Felicia, appearently for buying a gift to
Gina.(Sidentoe: Is Gina still with Paul I read a recent message at the
forum -- Answer: Is Paul still with Gina?)
> _Why had I come to _this_ store to buy lingerie,_ I
> wondered. I knew why, but I guess I didn't want to
> admit it.
Little head thinking.
> But a growing part of me below the belt, of course wanted
> to accept.
Treacherous organ.
> I was shopping for groceries when I was hungry (...).
I. e., Paul was shopping for lingry, when he was horny like ... I
before Nick posted this chapter tonight, and _I had plans_!
> I lumped Gina's gifts in with Kendall's, since I didn't want
> Felicia asking questions about my complex relationship.
And I just recognised the guy who's responsible for getting life so
comlicated.
> If she knew I already had two girlfriends, she might not
> understand my reluctance for a _third._)
I hate to repeat it, but J'ai déjŕ vu ça" (I hope Yahell doesn't
fuck this up!) --
> Even though you already have two girlfriends, you're still
> looking for someone else." [Susan, in SC 3,7]
> Unfortunately, a new girl was the _last_ thing I needed in my
> life. I had two girlfriends already. [SC 3,12 -- before modell session]
I here do not mention the discussions Paul is having with Trip on his
two girlfriends, but somehow I got the impressions, that Trip got
excited with the thought joining Paul's lifestyle from chapter to
chapter...
* * *
I am doing this for more than three hours now, going back and fore,
and the result is, that -- stilll before the middle of the chapter --
Paul is visiting another sexshop. If Nick said in his announcement of
the chapter some hours ago, that chapter 21 is a fast one, he was in
error or he lied. And so is coming the first time ever I am reading
SC, that I interrupot the lecture, at 1:10 AM in the morning, at the
half of the lecture. Nick, the first half of the chapter was the best
of the whole series.
* * *
After my recreational break (sleeping and some R/L activities) I went
back to my computer to continue. I picked up when Paul and Felicia
were Aon their way to the airport-sexshop.
> Trust me."
Paul is thinking whith his little head, so he trusts.
> Treacherous organ.
As the chapter 20 was oversexed, this chapter had little sex, until
now. It seems to change. Paul buys a dildo for -- Gina. Kendall does
not need one, he assumes. He already forgot what she said about
Kendall and sex?
We learn more about Felicia, she isn't much faithful -- it is the
first person acting like that in SC (Gina and Paul might have other
sexpartners, but they know more or less about it, except for the
newest developments):
> I had this boyfriend on the side, about a year ago,"
Felicia's boyfriend and she don't correspondent to each other a lot,
it seems to me...
> (...) I've tried to get Naldo to try some of it the tamer stuff
> but he's too traditional. Straight fucking and the occasional
> blowjob, that's all he likes. He won't even go down on me. I
> guess that's why I like it when he brings another girl. He's like
> every guy on the planet, it seems, so he likes watching girl-girl
> action."
Felicia acts like an ideal sex-partner to Paul.
Paul then tell us, that he got himself back under control, so he is
reluctant to Felicia's teasing.
> Having sex with Felicia by myself wouldn't simply bend the
> rules, it would break them.
Will he resist?
> Come in my mouth," she said. I swallow."
> Who was I to refuse?
No, he won't. (as I won't, being 18 years of age...)
> At that point, it was simply a matter of degrees: a blowjob versus
> a blowjob and more. How _much_ more was largely irrelevant.
According to an impeached POTUS that isn't irrelevant. Nevertheless,
Paul and Felicia are fucking and she constates:
> Cause you fuck like a god."
Paul calls his mother, and again he lies.
> I fibbed and told my mom that I'd met a friend from high school
> and gone to dinner with him."
His mother says him:
> Wake me up when you get home, though. You know I can't sleep
> til I know you're home safe."
Deja-vu, elsewhere in SC 1 and 2, several times I guess.
> When Felicia emerged from the bathroom, she looked excited.
As did Gina, in SC 3,14.
> I didn't need Kendall's insight or experience to realize that she'd
> probably snorted some coke. When she sniffed a couple of times and
> pinched her nostrils, I was sure.
Is this another clue about Gina and snoring, or, Nick again is
mindfucking his readers?
Felicia wants to see Paul again, but Paul is reluctant.
> Maybe some other time," I suggested.
> Maybe some other time."
Will he have another Talk with Gina and Kendall, similar to the
confessions about Amy? Is Felicia kind of mirrored Amy? (I already see
come back the fears on pregnancy'!)
Wow! For me, I just read what maybe is the best chapter in the whole
series, but surely in SC 3. So much things happened, we know the truth
(one of them?) about BMG incident, we saw Paul losing some of his
ideals, his image of being _responsible' got some darker shades. Nick
put several clues and hooks in this chapter. Will we able to
understand them now? So much details reappeared, though in another
constellation. Felicia had a relationship with a couple into BDSM. We
suspect, that also Susan knows somewhat about that lifestyle. We know
about The Room. What does that mean? -- I expect numberous discussions
in the forum and wild SWAGs.
> (...) my thoughts were chaotic (...).
As are mine.
